This acquisition is most likely going to suck for users, but congrats to the FF team. Once Google announced Wave, selling to Facebook was probably the only remaining exit strategy worth the money.

In the interview, it was said that FriendFeed was not in immediate danger and could have continued for a number of years on their own. I'm not quite sure if that is true, because FriendFeed didn't develop their own business model.

About integrating the social graphs, my social networks on FF and FB had different purposes. I don't have any friends on FB whom I haven't personally met, whereas I subscribe to some people I don't know on FF just because their feeds are interesting. On a related note, the FB graph is undirected and the FF graph is directed.

I know exactly how you feel. What's a person to do? I am mad at Twitter for suspending some of my accounts. First, the accounts kept causing the password to reset, then they were suspended, all around the time of the DOS attacks. All I ever used Twitter for was to advertise my businesses, and for fun. I think a lot of people LOVE to think negatively and don't want to think positively. They think FB is BAD and will ruin FF, but I think if they do it well, FB won't be the bad guy. I think most people who are irked about this are irked because they think the FFers "sold out" to the "man".

Having a messaging API is not going to make that happen. They first need to have a mail system that works outside of FB! ;)

The sad thing is that they really don't. I know a lot of people who don't even bother emailing anymore. They just use the kludgy FBmail. If you could message non FB members you'd have the Social butterflies and the tech neophytes right away. Remember, these are the path of least resistance people who use IE because it's the default, and are probably using Bing right now and wondering if its true that if you type "Google" into Google that you'll break the internet.

Sorry, I should have been a touch mor specific. By stupid food I was more referring to over-processed, ingredient-laden, prepared or instant food. But organic is also overrated. I read a study recently, (can't remember the citation now) that revealed that eating 1 cup of blueberries a day improves balance and proprioception, due to the particular blend of antioxidants in them and the way they interact with each other. Whereas regularly eating onions (for example), that also contain many antioxidants, improves memory. Random bit of interesting (to me anyway) trivia :)

Both of those things are laptops and both are PCs. The large heatsink/heat generator on the right that is running OS X and is called a MacBook by the company that designed it (they didn't build it) and sold it is the one that crashed.

Well, if it were due to an "attached" product, I have the headphones, power, and a USB cable that is connected to nothing. The last time, I likely had power and maybe a USB cable to iPhone. So no big gotchas. :)

When kernel panics start on the Mac, I learned to suspect bad hardware. RAM, hard disk, etc.

Usually either bad ram or a loose connection on the motherboard. Keep track of not only what software you were using on the computer, but also whether it was on your lap, desktop, etc. Sometimes you can induce it by flexing the frame, but don't try that too aggressively.

It's odd for ANY machine nowadays to crash out of the blue with nothing connected to it unless there's a hardware problem with the machine itself. That's worrisome indeed. Does OS X have error codes/performance reports like Windows does? On Vista, for example, you can use the Reliability and Performance Monitor to track down the source of system hiccups ...

I had SynServ run a muck on me this past week chewing up 90% CPU and almost all ram making the mac un usable... Dunno the cause. Just deletered the lib/dir and let it recreate itself. Not too long ago u had to replace the hdd an not the SuperDrive is on the fritz. So yes, I'd say it indeed does happen.

As Alex so eloquently pointed out, cheap commodity hardware is just cheap commodity hardware. OS X is nice compared to Windows IMO. Linux is awesome, and I love to compile my own goodies (then I know it's done right) But they all will crash. I'm off to install windows and gentoo on my mac. And OS X on my toshiba :) Now which one will crash?

only hardware failures i've had since 1992 have been cooling fans (3) and hard drives (5). haven't had an OS crash since 1999 (sheer luck). i must be doing something right, like rolling my own machines and knowing a bit about what i'm doing. keeping dust and heat build-up down also helps.

Ask a teenager and they'd likely say they're both worthless and are for old folks. It's all relative and dependant on who your target audience is. I find RSS subscribers to be of greater value, but there is value in the real-time echo chamber of Twitter. The value with Twitter lies in the ability to reach broader audience numbers faster and pull them in as RSS subscribers.

Interesting article. I think it is a different animal. RSS is passive, Twitter is an active process of conversation. I guess the same has been said earlier in this stream conversation. For me personally, more business has been done in the interaction on Twitter. I also have discovered more new things on Ttwitter than any other way.

The question should be about value. What have you given to your readers via RSS/Twitter? You build your communities/followers/friends through giving information/knowledge that they find useful. Twitter is about sharing, not selling. Build trust first. Engage. Both RSS/Twitter work in tandem.

I just declared bankruptcy on my google reader and dumped 1000+ unread feeds, that said, I still think RSS is a very powerful way of connecting with your readers. Twitter is important, but more flighty because it is so temporal in nature. Whereas a feed sits in your reader until you are ready to look at it.
