I was thinking the same thing. Count how many times you said "Cool" Robert ;)
- Andru Edwards
This acquisition is most likely going to suck for users, but congrats to the FF team. Once Google announced Wave, selling to Facebook was probably the only remaining exit strategy worth the money.
- Chip Ramsey
I don't know if i'm excited by the possiblities of this move, or frightened by what this could mean.
- John Czwartacki
I hope they don't spoil it for us. I just want to keep coming to Friendfeed.com
- Mark
If they had no plans of shutting down FriendFeed and rolling features into Facebook they would have said so right away to avoid speculation and to reassure FF users. I am trying not to be suspicious, but I am.
- Inside Alaska
Andru: it was about 100 degrees outside where I was doing the interview. I was trying to think cool and keep my cool. Heheh.
- Robert Scoble
Maybe now we'll be able to integrate Facebook feed with FF & twitter
- Justin Long
Faceborg...Googlebook...time to move back to StumbleUpon? Guess we should have seen this coming when FriendFeed got integrated into FeedBurner.
- Gail Gardner
This interview is pretty funny... the person interviewing sounds like he just wants to ask questions for the sake of asking questions...;-) ... thanks for the insightful interview but..
- Sherif Mansour
In the interview, it was said that FriendFeed was not in immediate danger and could have continued for a number of years on their own. I'm not quite sure if that is true, because FriendFeed didn't develop their own business model.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
About integrating the social graphs, my social networks on FF and FB had different purposes. I don't have any friends on FB whom I haven't personally met, whereas I subscribe to some people I don't know on FF just because their feeds are interesting. On a related note, the FB graph is undirected and the FF graph is directed.

"tremendous opportunity" is so vague. Opportunity for who? What opportunity exactly? Or is it just the opportunity to allow the friendfeed employees who weren't already rich to get rich?
- Laura Norvig
Laura: it's every engineer's dream to change the world of 300 million people instead of a few hundred thousand people. That's why this is a tremendous opportunity.
- Robert Scoble
Sigh. I guess. It's just very hard to think of Facebook as a life-changing venue.
- Laura Norvig
Robert: Thanks for this - some information at last!
- Jim Connolly
I left Twitter for Jaiku. Then Jaiku left me for Google. I moved in with Pownce but it died. I went back to Twitter, but flirted with Plurk, Identica, and Rejaw, and even tried doing it myself with Laconica but it was Twitter I really loved. Twitter finally broke my heart so I left it for Friendfeed. Now Friendfeed is leaving me for Facebook. No...
It reads better than Soap - my roadmap is very similar but I'll forgive FF and live happily ever after with it (for the time being, anyway)

You're the best Leo. Canadians are the funniest people.
- Dan Lessard
I'm betting they'll slowly digest it into the Facebook news feed. They claim that Friendfeed is staying put for now, but that won't last.
- Ken Bauer
And we keep following Leo all over the place!
- Robert Scoble
When will we all get in a long term relationship and stop getting our hearts broken?
- Nate Pilling
so what is more important, the medium or the people, hope that FF will let us export our content, and our social netork :) (in my wild dreams)
- abdellah
Need ice cream? I'm new to FF, and kind of sad I didn't jump on the proverbial wagon sooner!
- Elizabeth K. Barone
Feels to me like maybe it's time to go back to building a distributed network, rather than hopping from service to service.
- Ken Sheppardson
But where to next? That's the question. Wave sounds great, but the implementation will be a PAIN. So where? Oh LeoMoses...where is our path in the desert?
- ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift
Sounds like a hurtin' country song in the making.
- Bill Rodman
Well you can't say that what is happening in the 'social sphere' is boring by any means!
- Matt Cassem
I think Leo's audience is more likely to click "Like" or "comment" than Scoble's is. When Leo and Rob are both posting on FF, Leo gets more likes and comments
- Mark
Didn't you leave a post earlier saying how funny it was that people complain anytime there's a change (referring to the FF buyout)? This sounds like a complaint to me.
- Fleagle
Not complaining - just thinking about the future. I think a little Friendfeed DNA will vastly improve Facebook. And I think Facebook is already the big winner with the general populace. I also think we geeks need a corner somewhere else to hang out in.
- Leo Laporte
And I have no plans to leave Friendfeed. Yet.
- Leo Laporte
I feel more of a personal connection with the FriendFeed team than I have with other services I've left, and that will be a big part of why I will stay as long as possible.
- Louis Gray
The only way to have control is to use your own URL

Don't worry Leo, its not you, its them...
- Steven McGurn
I agree with Jonathan Hardesty "It's like the internet version of Days of Our Lives" - And sites keep getting killed off only to come back to life a month later!
- Amy Flynn
very true, however on the other hand, we are getting closer to that one service which everyone will be on... and I dont think twitter is going to be that one
- Bryce Campbell
Facebook buying FriendFeed is like having to MOVE just when you got your house all dressed up and made into a comfy HOME! I don't feel like doing it again!
- Arleen Boyd
Now that Facebook and Friendfeed have married, I'm waiting for Twitfacefeedplebospacening.
- Anthony Marco
Leo, u by your self made two companies (services) out of 3 famous and made Google interested enough to buy 2 of them (Jaiku & FF). Google also tried to flirt with Twitter as well. So which one u choose now? Cause we will follow u :P
- Sam Ehsan
Sounds like some of my past love affairs. Of course, I'm married now. That, um, was prior.
- Paul Chaney

Speaking of Days Of Our Lives: Didn't that show jump the shark when the serial killer was unmasked as Marlena (a character I used to have a mad crush on, and who's now mostly a professional victim)? Then all the "killed" characters came back to life, since they were only what I call "soap opera dead"...
- Dennis Jernberg
And if everyone follows you, then your all having affairs all over the place! LOL
- Technogran
I think it's back to the TWiT Army!

It's not like we have proposed Healthcare reform, or anything really important, going on in the U.S.A.
- Steve de Mena
I know exactly how you feel. What's a person to do? I am mad at Twitter for suspending some of my accounts. First, the accounts kept causing the password to reset, then they were suspended, all around the time of the DOS attacks. All I ever used Twitter for was to advertise my businesses, and for fun. Now I don't know where to go.

Gotta find one who is a lady in public and a whore in the bedroom. One who looks like a woman, but thinks like a man. One who tells you you're the only person in their world and worships the ground you walk on. One who's from Venus but want's to live on Mars. One who you know will always be there even when the chips are down. One who looks like a movie star, but doesn't bust the credit...

I think a lot of people LOVE to think negatively and don't want to think positively. They think FB is BAD and will ruin FF, but I think if they do it well, FB won't be the bad guy. I think most people who are irked about this are irked because they think the FFers "sold out" to the "man".
- Mol, FF Music Lover
@Mollyanna - I disagree. I am irked because the future of FF is completely uncertain. It's more likely that FB will let FF flounder and close it down than it is that FB will invest time and resources in maintaining and enhancing FF. FB has other interests and is splitting up the FF dev team. That does not bode well for FF. I don't begrudge the FF devs for taking the money. I would be...

Having a messaging API is not going to make that happen. They first need to have a mail system that works outside of FB! ;)
- travispuk
The sad thing is that they really don't. I know a lot of people who don't even bother emailing anymore. They just use the kludgy FBmail. If you could message non FB members you'd have the Social butterflies and the tech neophytes right away. Remember, these are the path of least resistance people who use IE because it's the default, and are probably using Bing right now and wondering if its true that if you type "Google" into Google that you'll break the internet.
- Ken Bauer
Interesting. Hire Paul and the FriendFeed team, and launch an upgrade to their messaging service. I will suggest now that by the time Wave becomes available to the public, Facebook will have public messaging services to compete with Gmail and Wave.

I think there might be a terminology problem here. Are they smart foods (modern/novel materials/foods)or super foods? According to the British Nutrition Foundation smart foods are classified as: * modified starch (eg instant dessert mix that uses cold milk) * genetically modified foods * anti-oxidants * modified enzymes, e.g. chymosin * probiotic yoghurts/drinks * meat analogues, eg...

- Mahdi Ebrahimi
Sorry, I should have been a touch mor specific. By stupid food I was more referring to over-processed, ingredient-laden, prepared or instant food. But organic is also overrated. Just because a food claims to be organically grown that doesn't make it better. At least here in the states there are many loopholes to the organic labeling laws....

I read a study recently, (can't remember the citation now) that revealed that eating 1 cup of blueberries a day improves balance and proprioception, due to the particular blend of antioxidants in them and the way they interact with each other. Whereas regularly eating onions (for example), that also contain many antioxidants, improves memory. Random bit of interesting (to me anyway) trivia :)

"There are increasingly sexy reasons to choose an Android phone over an iPhone but until now the iPhone 3GS has had the edge when it comes to fast and easy video recording, editing and uploading. Qik has changed that today with the launch of a new version of their video streaming app for Android."

I already have Qik on my jailbroken 3G S so I really don't have that much envy here

I love qik. It is just hamstrung by the lousy video on the G1. I can't wait to try the editing features.

I still love Apple, they think of everything. I was runing with my new iphone strapped to my arm and I noticed I could use the Voice Control using the earphones - they have a built in microphone for this very reason. Love it.

Things like this are the reason why when my contract with AT&T is up. I'm going to Sprint or T-mobile and getting an Android device.

Agreed phpBB is getting stale but face it forums are web 1.0. The crazy thing is they work!! Anything that updates the web 1.0 forum is great in my book.

They are stale but they still have their place, I think... esp. for long term moderated conversations??
- Justin Long
My big complaint is form conversations are siloed. The revamping of the forum since their inception is happening slooooowly. Why?
- cheapsuits
Thanks for the tip. I have to check out this forum. I will suggest this to a client that is interested to start to participate in social media activities and an online conversation with their customers, business partners and others. But first we have to go through Forrester's "Social Technographics Profile" of their customers as described in the Groundswell book.

Facebook is throwing weird errors right now... I don't even use it, but I'm having tons o' trouble.

I was waiting on someone on friend feed to confirm that twitter is down....any idea how long its been down and if there has been any official word from twitter about the reason?

I think this is bigger than Twitter and FB... I think it's some interweb routes or something. Why do most women insist on doing the cheerleader pose for group photos? Are they TRYING to show cleavage? If that's the reason, then I'm cool with it.
- Brad Williamson
I think I'd take exception to "most women." I'd bet the majority of photos - by far - are not in this pose. The ones that are just get more attention. [A funny corollary to Jeneane's statement might be: we show our cleavage because that's where your brains are. I don't seriously think that, but it would be funny.]

Prett much any time any of my macs have KP'd it's been either hardware connected to it or hardware internally not sitting or connecting right
- Robert DeBord
from iPhone
Both of those things are laptops and both are PCs. The large heatsink/heat generator on the right that is running OS X and is called a MacBook by the company that designed it (they didn't build it) and sold it is the one that crashed.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
If you have an Old Macbook that is bound to happen at least 4-8 times.

Kernel panics are usually hardware related. 90% of the time I've found its something plugged into it.
- Adam Turetzky
+1 Adam (for kernel panics mostly being hardware related)
- Paul Stamatiou
Well, if it were due to an "attached" product, I have the headphones, power, and a USB cable that is connected to nothing. The last time, I likely had power and maybe a USB cable to iPhone. So no big gotchas. :)

When kernel panics start on the Mac, I learned to suspect bad hardware. RAM, hard disk, etc.

Usually either bad ram or a loose connection on the motherboard. Keep track of not only what software you were using on the computer, but also whether it was on your lap, desktop, etc. Sometimes you can induce it by flexing the frame, but don't try that too aggressively.

I would say "no extra charge" for the one that's crashing, but...

It's odd for ANY machine nowadays to crash out of the blue with nothing connected to it unless there's a hardware problem with the machine itself. That's worrisome indeed. Does OS X have error codes/performance reports like Windows does? On Vista, for example, you can use the Reliability and Performance Monitor to track down the source of system hiccups ...
- LANjackal
It's obvious what happened here - you let your pc get too close and spread some of its nasty pc germs to your Mac.
- Phil Maxwell
I had SynServ run a muck on me this past week chewing up 90% CPU and almost all ram making the mac un usable... Dunno the cause. Just deletered the lib/dir and let it recreate itself. Not too long ago u had to replace the hdd an not the SuperDrive is on the fritz. So yes, I'd say it indeed does happen.

I had this happen when I jammed my headphone plug into the express card slot. Oops. Must have shorted something out.
- Rick Cogley
Are you sure you weren't licking the other end of the USB cable that was attached to "nothing"?
- George S.
As Alex so eloquently pointed out, cheap commodity hardware is just cheap commodity hardware. OS X is nice compared to Windows IMO. Linux is awesome, and I love to compile my own goodies (then I know it's done right) But they all will crash. I'm off to install windows and gentoo on my mac. And OS X on my toshiba :) Now which one will crash?
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
only hardware failures i've had since 1992 have been cooling fans (3) and hard drives (5). haven't had an OS crash since 1999 (sheer luck). i must be doing something right, like rolling my own machines and knowing a bit about what i'm doing. keeping dust and heat build-up down also helps.
- Joe Silence
Soon subscribing and following won't matter. Publishing good stuff that people "like" will matter most with the only little advantage in having a lot of subscribers or followers will be that your good content might reach more people faster.
- Charbax
“Under a direct comparison, I would say that RSS subscribers are worth more than Twitter followers,” says Daniel Scocco
- kang
how does growth in google reader users compare to growth in twitter/facebook users?
- Brian Hendrickson
gotta agree. RSS. Twitter is great as cloudthink, but not the best for organizing things. At least not for those with lives that don't involve looking at it all day long :)
- Jorge Chapa
Ask a teenager and they'd likely say they're both worthless and are for old folks. It's all relative and dependant on who your target audience is. I find RSS subscribers to be of greater value, but there is value in the real-time echo chamber of Twitter. The value with Twitter lies in the ability to reach broader audience numbers faster and pull them in as RSS subscribers.
- Jim Goldstein
Twitter is two-way and thus allows built-in communication/feedback. RSS is one-way and does not. I'd have to go with Twitter on this one.
- Jeff Harbert
Dave Winer is gonna come in here and smack you for comparing Twitter to RSS
- @baratunde
Interesting article. I think it is a different animal. RSS is passive, Twitter is an active process of conversation. I guess the same has been said earlier in this stream conversation. For me personally, more business has been done in the interaction on Twitter. I also have discovered more new things on Ttwitter than any other way.
- Eran Even-Kesef
part of the "value" is how much you know about your new audience member. a new follower on Twitter/Facebook/Friendfeed (if it's not a spammer) includes useful/interesting info about who just joined your network
- Brian Hendrickson
Both, mostly, the information in a tweet are very interesting but the author would never write a blog post about such a short tought...
- Antonio Correnti
RSS is like a DVR -- you can save everythign to read later. Twitter is real-time, so most people followers will miss your Tweets anyway. It's all about the spiral of silence.
- Steve Lynch
from twhirl
All about the likes... especially when you consider Facebook and Google's future impact on our notions of "following" or "subscribing."
- Sam Harrelson
Like the others... it's RSS. Too much gets lost in the stream of twitter. Even if you don't have a massive network. RSS feeds are there waiting for me. And I only subscribe to the stuff I really care about.
- adam christensen
The question should be about value. What have you given to your readers via RSS/Twitter? You build your communities/followers/friends through giving information/knowledge that they find useful. Twitter is about sharing, not selling. Build trust first. Engage. Both RSS/Twitter work in tandem.
- iconic88
Both have a lot of value and the best/most interesting bloggers know how to leverage both medium. Fred Wilson is a perfect example of twitter, blogging and discuss/comments working in concert to create a very active community.
- Edwin Khodabakchian
Jim: im a teenager (im 17) - i dont think their worthless. i would have to say twitter - why? if you where to stop posting to your blog today, nothing would be sent to your subscribers... right?
- Chris Clayton
I just declared bankruptcy on my google reader and dumped 1000+ unread feeds, that said, I still think RSS is a very powerful way of connecting with your readers. Twitter is important, but more flighty because it is so temporal in nature. Whereas a feed sits in your reader until you are ready to look at it.
- Peggy Dolane
Who cares? As long as the people are active, comment, join the conversation and come back - that what matters. The source matters for statistics. P.S. Came here from a twitter RT :)
- Sasha Kovaliov
My blog readers pay more than mere followers or even socnet friends.
- Bernie Goldbach
And I thought I heard somewhere RSS was slowly fading away...Or maybe it's time for it to evolve? I would also vote for RSS.
- Zack Brandit
I've always viewed RSS subscribers as being worth about 10x a Twitter follower. FriendFeed is up in the air because I think the number of people with accounts >>> the people who actively use it.
