"I have been using Ubuntu since 7.04 but I never had any issue with wireless or bluetooth. It recognises it better than Windows. But as always, hardware compatibility may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some hardware are still supporting Windows only. So I will say it is not Ubuntu's issue not recognises WiFi rather a hardware issue. Check out Karmic, it is really awesome. As you said Windows 7 has real competition going forward.
