"People seriously need some perspective on this. Aletoledo is exactly correct. State regulations require insurance providers to have a certain amount of cash on hand for every dollar they offer as part of a policy. This money cannot be spent on anything other than paying out policies (it varies state to state but it hovers around $0.75 per dollar). This is why people should have been nervous about John McCain, because his former CFO lobbied (successfully) that CDS (though insurance like in every way) were not insurance and thus not subject to regulations."

"We did something like this at my high school (The Athenian). Only the requirement was higher (I think 200 hours to graduate). They worked it into the curriculum, and I have to say, it was a good idea (I remember doing trail maintenance on Alcatraz, it was fun, I got to spend the night camped out on the island). The Athenian is a private school, so our efforts weren't the result of a "paying back" initiative, but it gave all of us a deeper sense of being responsible citizens. I think some of you are getting hung up on the notion of being told what to do, and forgetting that in this case, it's a good idea. Not only could it produce a great deal of good but it's directed at a motivated, energetic and (until they gradate), already managed population of citizens. If Obama had said he wanted everyone with a part-time job to pick up trash, I might suggest that he would have a management issue on his hands (I say "might", because I rather like the guy and his policies, so who knows), but here..."

"Thanks for the tip, I just got the song on iTunes. So with the Regina Spektor song they used to hype the zune initially that makes iTunes 2-Zune 0 for me. Thanks Microsoft for introducing me to new music."

"I'm glad that they have this on line, but I think they missed a real opportunity to explain the kinds of social tricks that make phishing really effective. In the Capital One page they suggest that you can tell that something is up when the theme doesn't match the rest of the site, but what should really be jumping out is how the page asks for every piece of information to verify an account. If the page really originated from the bank they should only ask for some subset of your entire profile to validate. Some amount of information that could not be combined with public information to make a purchase. I don't think many people would be capable of noticing theme differences (and that is something the Phisher could easily fix) and as for grammatical errors, most people don't read most of whats on a page, and reading 30 emails a day will eventually desensitize most people from even catching typos. I recall hearing once that Kevin Mitnick gained the most access from just sounding smart..."
