After being away from news all day, I really don't want to deal with reading everyone's last philosophical rant on Chrome. I'm using it, it's fine, whatever.
Heh you forget I only once in a while look at the 'friends' tab. So this is quiet time. :P
- Eric Rice
I am more interested in your presentation. :) How are you loving LA? I was just there last nite!
- Daynah
Well you just missed the Chrome hooplah and got here JUST in time for the RNC talks. Joy!
- Mona Nomura
@daynah i always love LA, heh. We have a diverse panel on Thurs, I think I might be the gaming/social media angle... the removal of devices entirely and just the real life existence within data.. that's kinda hot.
- Eric Rice
heh talk about getting gitty over the latest shiny, the name is fucking chrome!
- sean percival
bling bling I got some chrome for your bling; you put the chrome in your bling, and then you bling bling bling. Diggitiy.
- Pete D
Dude - why weren't you at PAX?!?! (Or were you?)
- TDavid
Tdavid: never heard of it before gnomedex
- Eric Rice
I'd say being an advisor has its privileges, but this bib arrived even before our kids. Sarah can't wait to get her hands on an RSS feed reader and start sharing stuff. She just needs to get her own dang laptop.
- Louis Gray
It cracks me up cuz it looks exactly like a cheesy commercial you see on TV. I hope those guys aren't spending anymore to make those commercials than I just did..LOL.
- Rahsheen the Dream
Oh come on, you *know* they are! (spending more on advertising)
- Nicholas Kreidberg
That was better acted, written, and produced than any of the cheesy local commercials in these parts ;)
- Michael W. May
Thanks, guys. Really appreciate it :) @Nicholas you are probably right on that. People are stupid sometimes.
- Rahsheen the Dream
That could totally pass for a commercial. You're always cracking me up on here, Rahsheen. This is the first time I saw you on video. You should make some money off of that talent (if you're not already).
- Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
Well, this one is obviously for a sponsored post, but if anybody knows a way I can make more than $20 for doing a quick vid....I'm all ears :)
- Rahsheen the Dream
Bro.. What the FReaking hell are you doing !?? this is just awsome ! -- you got it man..just get so more sponsors !! shoot me your coords
- Peter Dawson
all i noticed is that your right arm is stronger than your left.
- Jeremiah Owyang
I can't stop laughing. What is this for?
- Justin Korn
LOL! Thanks for pointing out my bodybuilding flaws, Jeremiah. I would switch to dumbells, but I need heavier ones.
- Rahsheen the Dream
i want my settlement now,ow ow,www-oopps wrong commercial-thnx for the laugh
- Arne-Per
Although my tweet was silly, I got between 5 and 10 e-mails telling me it was down. I've never made a lot of noise about FriendFeed having 100% uptime, as others have. I expect some sites will have momentary outages, and today's wasn't the first time FriendFeed has done it. Luckily, it all happened when we were asleep. Carry on. :-)
- Louis Gray
Agreed... to be expected once in awhile... hopefully not often is all we can ask. Although my life just carries on when Twitter or FF are down. "Carry on"
- Adrian Nadeau
Thanks for fixing it anyway, @Louis_Gray
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
Uptime has not been a big thing with me either. Look at Twitter. Continued growth and the return of the big users despite its repeated outages.
- Hutch Carpenter
I happened to wake up in the middle of the night and notice it. If nothing else, it raised the question "what should one do when FriendFeed is down?" Ironically, I found myself on Twitter. There is a place that reproduces status information from various Web 2.0 services; unfortunately, it's a FriendFeed room and therefore wasn't available. :)
- Ontario Emperor
That's funny -- I didn't get any calls or emails, though I did get about 100 sms alerts from our monitoring system, which were eventually annoying enough to wake up April, who then woke me up (who then called Sanjeev...).
- Paul Buchheit
Paul: Does that mean we can email you next time and you'd wake up from that? :) we were just twittering the outage. it was well bizarro.
- Marcel Weiß
Thanks for doing the work! There is nobody else we would trust as much. We are just eager for the info because we are behind on our schedule. URthe best!
- Arne-Per
"I LOVE the huge FriendFeed in the middle of Louis'. I also noticed his name is bigger than my husband's, although I assume that's because I also contribute regularly to the LouisGrayFacts room and that would factor in somewhat, wouldn't it?"
- Cyndy
hope so for you. It was fun to see the graphic representation.
- Arne-Per
I subscribe to interesting people, who post/comment w/ something interesting, but I have seen a lot of people subscribe to me randomly. which makes me believe I'm on some list someplace
- clarke thomas
Good point Mr Scoble..thanks for your support.
- Scot Duke
I subscribe to interesting people who share interesting content and comments.
- David Finch
clarke: you'll get random subscribers because of friend-of-a-friend. Scot, just having some fun. Some people here do subscribe to tons just to listen in, I'm sure there are even a few who want to spam. But I don't worry about who is following me. I can't control that. I can only control who I follow.
- Robert Scoble
I'm there with the Scobe...subscribing/following/friending the interesting really increases the utility of these tools.
- Justin Whitaker
How can you say that someone subscribes to another with no interest in communicating with them? Sometimes I subscribe to someone because I found them interesting, or they liked something I had to say
- Les Zaldor
I can't even control who I follow. We are, at heart, Borg.
- XDpaul
It is also about learning (as well as taking part) - for this aspect you cannot subscribe to too many people (information overload) but you can learn a lot quickly if you subscribe to the right people.
- Riaz Kanani
/agree with @XDpaul. I had no choice.
- Carolyn Chan
Maybe we also need a three-tier ranking for FF subscriptions
- Anna Star
Seconding (or is it thirding) the friend-of-a-friend notion. Also, maybe a little of the Borg thing, too. Not that that's a bad thing. I don't think FriendFeed is really about communicating with any one person in particular; I see it rather as an exercise in creating an ever-expanding cloud of connected information.
- Derrick Burns
Probably because they follow too many people to be able to interact with all the folks they follow in any way. Unless their fulltime job is reading FF like Scoble's is
- Daniel Spisak
from twhirl
Every click of the 'Follow' button adds another node to the system. Just as we have hypertext--text documents deeply interlinked across a wide network of computers, we now have (at least the beginnings of) hyperthought: ideas mutually interlinked and cross-referenced across a mesh of social contacts.
- Derrick Burns
People get hung up trying to put services into boxes. But you can't squash FriendFeed into any one box. Is it a social network service? Yes, for some. Is it a place to discuss things? Yep, for some. Can it be a great information/learning source for someone who has no desire at all to participate? Yes. And it can be and is everything in-between. Why isn't it OK for people to use the service how *they* want to, instead of how you think they should?
- Robert Seidman
I have no idea who you are, but since I follow someone who follows you i get to read everything you post. how do turn this off? I odn't want to see friends of friends, i just want to read what my friends are syaing
- Jonathan Jesse
*sigh* @ scot - no need to comment though since robert seidman already left the perfect comment :)
- mike "glemak" dunn
To learn things I wouldn't know from people I already talk to.
- Steven Perez
Ditto Scoble. I follow people who I think I can learn from or find interesting ... and we're ALL always learning ... especially in this dynamic place (the Internet).
- Charlie Anzman
not always an issue about interest just about time in the day to comment
- Arne-Per
Outstanding stuff here..I like Mr Seidman's point as well as all of he others. Live and learn and ask a lot of questions along the way is my motto..thanks all.
- Scot Duke
Subscribing to people who bring interesting content means more ways to discuss what's going on out there. I especially appreciate people who bring in conversation starters to the feed. We all remember more about what we teach and conversation has always been one of the best ways to get a point across.
- Derick Valadao
FF told me to: everyone I've subscribed to was a FF suggestion when I signed up so I thought I'd start there and see how it goes. Some suggestions were good, others were not. Wish FF had the option of matching ppl by interest ala checklist or tags: makes it easier to find new people rather than following the same old same old.
- FFing Enigma
Thanks for having some great guest bloggers. This was a perfect post for a meeting we are having on Monday especially the Apprenticeship idea!
- Arne-Per
Mark, Hutch, Rob, Jesse, Cyndy and Colin have done a great job with their guest blog posts. I'm posting too, so this isn't some kind of "vacation" or "help the new daddy out" deal. I just think these are some great writers who could use a little boost in exposure, with whom I share a lot of similarities. Win Win!
- Louis Gray
Mark did such a great job on this post. It's really refreshing to read blog posts about the reasons why introducing new audiences is important. Sometimes it feels like early adopters want to keep sites like FriendFeed from garnering any mainstream attention.
- Jennifer Van Grove
Did I ever mention how much I like @jbruin? :)
- Mark Dykeman
Mark, in the end I'm not sure if getting everyone on the Internet will be as difficult as getting everyone to read blogs (text messaging is definitely a form of social media, so you exclude a ton of people when you exclude that audience). The problem is not everyone is hungry for info. we all have at least 5 friends who'd rather call us up and ask us a question than just look it up on Google. Teaching people to want to learn on their own is sometimes a very difficult challenge and will play a big role here
- Robert Seidman
@Robert, motivations for using social media (or basic Internet functionality) would make excellent material for yet another post. But I think you are correct in that some people would find social media too much of a bother. But I'm willing to bet there's still a significant population that's "on the bubble", as one of my former bosses used to say, and they might not need a whole lot of encouragement or education to dive in.
- Mark Dykeman
I commented on Louis's blog. Summary - bloggers should engage, even with short little comments. Not everything needs to be a long comment.
- Hutch Carpenter
Mark, I'm with your old boss. Overcoming inertia usually is a very expensive proposition though.
- Robert Seidman
I like the idea of the "social media apprentice. "You are beginning to learn the ways of the blogosphere young padawan".
- Damien Franco
some good ideas here about looking outward and being supportive to others. Similar to some of the premises we had in helping encourage the corporate blog council
- Richard Binhammer
Excellent post Mark, lots of really great ideas.
- John Duff
With all these guest posts I was thinking back to an article Louis wrote a couple weeks back on the importance of blog linking (http://www.louisgray.com/live...). Out of curiosity, everyone who has been writing guest posts, have you seen significant increases in your own blogs traffic since writing a post for louisgray.com?
- John Duff
I shall refrain from answering. ;) Actually, Louis, do I even have blogs linked in my ID?
- Cyndy
Cyndy does not have a blog linked on her ID, but does for email and Twitter. If she has a "Cyndy blog", I'd link, but she's always been a gun for hire.
- Louis Gray
Cherish your twins when they are this small, as they will be quite large before you know it. My little Owen is 7 months old, starting to crawl and his two bottom teeth are like razor blades. We had a picture similar to the gift bags, but with a stocking because he was born christmas eve.
- Kyle A Koch
Good luck! Hope your voicemail hasn't blown up during your leave.
- Phil Glockner
Have every confidence that you will be just fine! it is def an adjustment but just remember not to sweat the small stuff...
- Marco(aureliusmaximus)
Oh wow, good luck to mommy! You'll be fine -- it's TOUGH but totally worth it.
- Kate
4 weeks of vacation doting on your kids, whatz the prob? JUST KIDDING-you'll do great!
- Arne-Per
Regarding VMs, there were only 37. 14 were from the same dude. Still not buying.
- Louis Gray
All the best to you and yours! I have faith that you will not "burn-out" but keep the flame bright! Those pictures you shared the other night are priceless!
- michael sean wright
Good luck, Louis! I was (still am) amazed at my friends' capacity to function under serious sleep deprivation. Also amazed at how quickly these early days go by. Enjoy!
- Ayşe E.
Good luck, Louis. I was unsuccessful at going back to work after my maternity leave, which is why I changed careers! And best of luck to K as well. You can have her call me anytime if she just wants an ear, too. :)
- Cyndy
Ah - now I get it. This is why I couldn't figure out where you worked - you weren't working! (well, for an employer, that is) Be sure to post some time about how you're managing work, twins, and FriendFeed - I'd love to hear your perspective. (I should do the same, although 4 kids later I'm still trying to figure it out, and now I'm on my own, even scarier!)
- Jesse Stay
How did your first day go Louis? How the heck are you going to do FT work and dual daddy role?!
- Susan Beebe
@Susan, I think I'm just going to try and sleep less. First day was pretty easy. Scheduling catch-up meetings, prioritizing work with the agency... e-mail maintenance. And the kids are sleeping now, so they don't care. Maybe tonight, when they want to be awake and I don't, it will be a different issue.
- Louis Gray
You got 4 weeks? Wow... I took 1 and it was a real drag... I think if we have another, I will follow-suit
- Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
from twhirl
There was no hard and fast rule. My boss said, two weeks with one kid, four with two. Why not?
- Louis Gray
I'm still on paternity leave from my baby in March ;-)
- Jesse Stay
from twhirl
I took one week, walked out the door on the following Monday to go to work, got to the car...and we had an earthquake. I ran back to the house, and my wife was in the front doorway, holding the baby.

Some images on FriendFeed aren't loading because Amazon S3 is down. Also, the bookmarklet and mail2ff are unable to share images for the same reason. Hopefully it will be back soon.
What made me notice was when I commented on this and it stayed in the same spot in my feed instead of popping to the top: http://friendfeed.com/e... ETA: for instance, this: http://friendfeed.com/e... (posted long before my comment and no comments or likes) still is above several active conversation threads
- Shannon Jiménez
Shannon, entries eventually stop bubbling so that they don't stay at the top of the page forever.
- Paul Buchheit
I thought that was only true with likes, not comments? The item was relatively "old" but the conversation was active today.
- Shannon Jiménez
Does this also explain the weird pagination I've been getting lately? I'll have 15 entries on Page 1, then only 8 on Page 2, 1 on Page 3... it's not always reproducible but it's happened to me atleast once a day.
- Jennie Lin
“Wordpress.com on Amazon S3 problems : 'Amazon's S3 Service is down which is causing some image serving problems on WordPress.com' (site)”
- Jeroen De Miranda
is that why twitter pics are no shows on my stream?
- Arne-Per
just read your post - I couldn't comment on a new friend I added - thanks for the heads up! :)
- The Pageman
I have the same problem in Twitter as well
- CARisME
Agree with Gabe. It's what happens when the cheapest solution is chosen.
- Anthony Citrano
I love it when people say "don't rely on the cloud" it always makes me wonder what they think is a better alternative than a large number of geographically distributed datacenters looked after by a company with the track record and finances of Amazon.
- Adewale Oshineye
Adewale: it depends on what kind of business you're running. For businesses where an actual transaction is involved (FriendFeed is not that business currently) what is a better alternative than a large number of geographically distributed datacenters is a large number of geographically distributed data centers from multiple providers.
- Robert Seidman
Adewale there are MUCH better alternatives, such as real CDNs; even better, distribute your load across a couple of CDNs. People are choosing S3 at the moment because it's cheap, not because it's the best solution for reliable global content delivery.
- Anthony Citrano
I have bad news for you: CDNs fail too. Everything fails. It's just that if you're in a business where failure will cost you serious money then you can spend the money to acquire massive amounts of redundancy (in hardware, network routes, power supplliers, etc). Unfortunately a company like FF would go bust trying to get that kind of redundancy when they'll only need it a few times a year.
- Adewale Oshineye
I am aware that CDNs fail too - I have a client in that business. Do some research and compare S3 with the top few CDNs - several media and analyst firms have done some unbiased testing - and you'll see why it's often worthwhile to spend a little extra. And you don't have to actually build global redundancy - you can rent it. And finally: none of the top CDNs have failed the way S3 has over the past 12 months.
- Anthony Citrano
per Werner Vogels "“S3 EU is green again " - so we s/be seeing normalcy being return to the web. :)-
- Peter Dawson
I think Adewale's point is that FriendFeed and its ilk can totally eat this failure. I mean, if Twitter can survive with all its self-inflicted failure, a few hours a quarter without images won't do FriendFeed in. Building something complicated based on CDNs and stuff is just more trouble than it's worth. Sure, if you *really* care about reliability you'll go to a much greater extent to identify and remove SPOFs, but that doesn't really have much to do with "in house" vs "hosted" app infrastructure.
- ⓞnor
mark not sure if the US is up. as per last brief "3:23 PM PDT EU service has been fully restored. We have been working on the US in parallel but restoration will take longer due to fleet size."
- Peter Dawson
Wow, hats off the guy who designed the awesome rendering engine ..... oh yeah ..and to the guy who drew the cars as well :)
- Sachendra
Good looking renders, But I never understand making CG look so real it looks like a photograph, what's the point of CG unless it CAN'T done with photography
- Dave@yummyporky
Dave, because these can eventually be interactive worlds!
- Jeremiah Owyang
How do I know that there fake? The interwebs is full of real stuff, isn't it? (very cool pics though)
- phil baumann
site has exceeded bandwidth-must have been good!
- Arne-Per
I knew this girl who was trying to build a realistic looking whale in CG, so realistic that it doesn't even show any emotion or personality. I still don't see the point of that even today as someone a working creative type. there's really no point of doing that in CG. Same to me with these cars.
- Dave@yummyporky
Also that's why Sherk and Nemo are successful and Final Fantasy - the spirits within and Beowolf are considered flops
- Dave@yummyporky
