"Plastic takes thousands of years to decompose — but 16-year-old science fair contestant Daniel Burd made it happen in just three months. The Waterloo, Ontario high school junior figured that something must make plastic degrade, even if it does take millennia, and that something was probably bacteria. The Record reports that Burd mixed landfill dirt with yeast and tap water, then added ground plastic and let it stew. The plastic indeed decomposed more quickly than it would in nature; after experimenting with different temperatures and configurations, Burd isolated the microbial munchers. One came from the bacterial genus Pseudomonas, and the other from the genus Sphingomonas. Burd says this should be easy on an industrial scale: all that’s needed is a fermenter, a growth medium and plastic, and the bacteria themselves provide most of the energy by producing heat as they eat. The only waste is water and a bit of carbon dioxide."

It doesn't say what the process actually produces. They mention the feed material (plastic) and the waste material (water, CO2), but not the real products. I assumed it produced globs of carbon. Am I wrong?

Has nobody considered this for an artificial ecosystem? Compost your scraps for fertile soil, and compost your bags for the CO2 for the plants growing in it. Sure you'll need an airlock on your greenhouse (and an oxy mask whenever you enter it) but you'll have the best damned tomatoes on your street.

Since it said that the waste products were CO2 and water, I assumed there were also non-waste products. The good thing about landfills is that they can later be mined for all the great things that were too cheap to recycle.

Yeah, I think landfills have an unjustly bad reputation. When properly managed, they are a great way to deal with garbage that our technology can't yet efficiently recycle. (we're saving for the future!)

The two biggest problems with landfill are the leachate seeping into groundwater (or contaminating local soil) and methane (a greenhouse gas). Even if you can mitigate those problems, they're difficult to eliminate entirely, making the land almost useless once it's full.

It's not just landfills, though. Take the large floating trash gyre of the Pacific, and its effects in the ecosystem. So the tiny little plastic balls in water are fake food, and animals eat them, and then die in various ways, lowering populations and making species even more fragile. Well that was a bit dumb. The thing about social media is it's just so much a part of our lives. We are encouraged to pour our views and feelings into it but we have to remember who is going to be reading it. TweetDeck for the iPhone is NOT the best tweeting application. It uses up too much API, although I would still have it on my iPhone just to look at every now and then. Twitterrific is definitely the 5-star app ever since it realized its 2.0 version. TweetDeck is only a 3.5 to 4 star app in my mind.

I just think it's a stretch to label protests about taxes as primarily racist. I think that the racism card should be played when it applies and not as something to simply dismiss anyone who is critical. Thomas, while I can't speak to your experience, I will say that this is a huge part of the problem when it comes to serious discussions about racism: which is, Recognizing it. To those who have never been on the "receiving end" of racist or prejudiced overtones, it is harder to spot when prejudice has occurred. A lot of people who haven't experienced it directly are skeptical about how prominent it really is, because "out of sight, out of mind" is very applicable to them.

I actually discovered I felt the same thing earlier today. I twittered my own thoughts on these protests. There was no reasonable logic behing them. Obama has lowered taxes for a large number of the people that came out to protest. I do believe most of those protesting have no idea why they were really there. They are there subconsciously because they lost the election and hate having a black president.

syfy.com states the new naming "creates an ownable and extendable brand for the future." This actually makes sense. 'Sci fi' is too too generic a term to receive trademark protections as they venture in to new areas, so they had to come up with something unique. I don't like what they ended up with, but I understand why (and how, since at least this change is only a visual change. The linguistic name stays the same.)

Robert: I tell you the iPhone can be a life saver. My wife & I were taking our nephew apple picking & on the car ride over he started crying so I took out my iPhone and pulled up a Curious George cartoon (his favorite) & he fell in love. When the clip ended he cried 'oh no!' So I pulled up another & again mesmerized. Perhaps not the best parenting, but hey we aren't parents yet & don't know the tricks of the trade. Plus it put him in a good mood for the rest of the trip :-)
