Does it bug anyone else that the "wi" in "wifi" is short for (I think) for "wire_less_"? Because, I mean, it's also the first two letters in 'wire', obviously...

It was a term made up for marketing mostly on the basis that it was pronouncable.

I never liked wifi, but it's the marketing term they came up with.

It doesn't bug me at all. It stands for "wireless fidelity" but I didn't know it was a marketing thing.
