Welcome Baby Ryan!!! My baby Ryan (17 years!) and I are honored to welcome another superstar to our planet! Love, hugs, and lots of kisses to Baby Ryan, Mommy Maryam, Dad Robert and big brothers Milan & Patrick and of course Grandma!!! My guess on Ryan's arrival (predication) was only 23 hours off. I thought he would arrive on Friday, Sept. 18th at 11:45 pm. Love to all, Kelly & Ryan Kim

Congratulations! Welcome to the world, Ryan. :-)

Congratulations Robert and Maryam! And welcome Ryan. If I was having a baby today, I'd begin a blog for him/her straight away as an online diary they could look back on when grown up.

It's hard to believe it's been more than three years since we introduced Google Calendar to the world. (It's true, I just checked my calendar.) In that time we've received countless ideas and suggestions, including many from my fellow Googlers, and trying to decide which of those to build can be is difficult. We try to balance usefulness and impact, but often that's not enough. A feature may be useful to only a small handful of people, but to those folks it might be incredibly important. This is especially the case with some of our enterprise customers who are looking for ways to extend Calendar in highly specialized ways that would apply only to their employees. We've been looking for a way to release early features to users in a quick and experimental fashion, but in a way that would let developers and customers outside of Google extend Calendar too. We've seen how successful Gmail Labs has been and decided Calendar deserved Labs too. When you sign in to Calendar today, you'll see a...

it's not desktop tool for me. It is webtool called diigo. It's integrated with browser both for taking notes on a web page(annotation) and retrieve them as bookmarks. Yes evernote has a nice OCR technology.

Evernote - use it every day. Notebooks need to have sections or chapters, and the Mac version needs to add audio recording, but otherwise it's great.

best notetaking for me is my moleskine for on hand, and jott when behind the wheel.

Notepad++ largely, but increasingly using Google Notebook.

Evernote. mostly use it to keep track of real estate listings. (used to use OneNote--haven't opened it in months!)

Jott for voice notes, Evernote for pictures and text but iPhone produces very blurry and unusable business cards with Evernote so far, needs a focus-adjuster app to be effective.

Google Notebook. Trying to find practical uses of Evernote. It still doesn't seem to have a collaborating notebooks feature.

evernote all the way. rich internet app with clients for most major PC and mobile platforms, and sync to cloud is quick and reliable. text deco of images is a nice bonus. they do need to spend some time observing the list features of OneNote and the search search ux of Spotlight - even the best apps can always improve.

Right now it's Gmail and IMAP but I am playing with Evernote. I do have concerns though about trusting my info with your cloud. You're doing all the right things. It's just that you're new and I need to get to know you. I trust Gmail.

A group of San Francisco first-graders took an unusual field trip to City Hall on Friday to toss rose petals on their just-married lesbian teacher - putting the public school children at the center of a fierce election battle over the fate of same-sex marriage. I'm guessing you missed the part about this being a charter school?
- Alex Scoble
The only thing that's wrong is that this is newsworthy. I am happy to see that the young generations are not nearly as homophobic (or racist for that matter) as the old ones. Gives me hope for the future.
- Bora Zivkovic
If this had been a public school teacher, then I could see where the furor would be justified , but this was a charter school.
- Alex Scoble
Seems very cute to me. and didn't make any news-blogs or otherwise really- in SF as far as I can see.

Alex it is true... I did not give the type of school any consideration... now that I have considered that.... it is still wrong. the type of school doesn't change the fact that these are kids. leave them alone with this crap. This is not the type of things kids should learn. a class going to any marriage is inappropriate... in my opinion the whole make out thing with public displays of...

@another noah, kids can't go to marriages? what about ring bearers and flower girls?
- anna sauce
not as a class. if you are going to give one on one explanations... it is different. these people are using children as pawns
- Noah David Simon
I didn't get the sense that the parents of the kids did this to push an agenda. The thing that is missed here is that (if I'm reading the article right) this was a bunch of parents and kids showing their appreciation of their teacher on their wedding day. Again, not a thing that would be allowed for a public school teacher (for liability reasons they have to be professionally detached from their kids), but I think it's kind of cool. Oh and considering that this happened in San Francisco? Completely not news
- Alex Scoble
Weddings and funerals are part of life. Why shield the kids from it? Why such an unease with the facts of life like birth, love, sex and death? Is it about denying we are animals and have bodies? How Puritan!
- Bora Zivkovic
Bora... do you have a kid? there are many things that take more effort then just throwing them into the game. some day they will have sex... yes? does that mean you watch porn with ur kids?
- Noah David Simon
I have two kids and I am raising them to deal with the world as it is, not a sterilized, unrealistic fairy-tale version of the world. They are teens now, and emotionally healthy, intellectually curious, and they are critical readers of the media.
- Bora Zivkovic
@Bora you should write a book on parenting, I'd read it!
- anna sauce
Only people squeamish about their own sexuality equate a wedding with sex - dirty minds? Wedding is a celebration of love. Kids understand love. Only old pervs are reminded of sex when they attend a wedding.
- Bora Zivkovic
and Bora there is a huge difference between you teaching sex and a person with 20 or 30 kids teaching it. sex should be taught one on one. not in public. sex education is a cruel joke on kids. @Bora well I guess Obama is ur man... he loves teaching sex ed to five year olds. these kids are going 2b more messed up then Generation X
- Noah David Simon
But they're not teaching sex by bringing them to a wedding... it's not like the women had sex during the ceremony.
- heather ♥s fauns on mars.
Only a perverse mind would equate a wedding with sex education. And yes, Obama is my man because that bill you are referring to is a bill that would protect small kids from sexual perverts, from people who are so sick and depraved they see sex in everything, even in the most beautiful events in a person's life.
- Bora Zivkovic
public displays of affection... the kids will emulate it. there is little explaination for these kids. look at the faces... they don't know what to make of it when they aren't being trained
- Noah David Simon
Just to be clear on two things: (1) a charter school is a public school; it just has a charter that relaxes certain educational requirements. (2) from the article: "As is the case with all field trips, parents had to give their permission and could choose to opt out of the trip. Two families did. Those children spent the duration of the 90-minute field trip back at school with another first-grade class, the interim director said."
- Mistletoe Glen
I guarantee Noah that no one is teaching sex education to 6 year olds.
- Alex Scoble
Again, equating this with sex education is completely bogus.
- Alex Scoble
Maybe Noah's imagination was going wild- if they kiss, what else happens... orgy ensues. Sorry I'm getting silly. Except for a school's questionable "school activities" - going to a gay or straight wedding seems a stretch for me as a 'teachable moment in civil rights." But hey- charter schools are like that.
- anna sauce
Humans are beautiful. Human bodies are beautiful. Sex is beautiful. Love is beautiful. Marriage is beautiful. Weddings are beautiful. Being a living, breathing, thinking, mortal animal is beautiful. Why deprive the kids from beauty? Everything at the correct time - weddings are fine at any age, sex later as they get more mature and presented as beautiful, not sinful.
- Bora Zivkovic
And he also missed the part where the students were waiting outside of City Hall, so they wouldn't have seen the newlyweds kiss anyhow...at least not as part of the ceremony.
- Alex Scoble
The first thing a newborn experiences is Mom's kiss. How is a kiss something to hide from kids?
- Bora Zivkovic
Alex... we don't know where the kids are standing. no imagination... just the video facts. don't want my kid there. don't want my kid in that school where the kids are talking about it http://digg.com/politic... I DRAW THE LINE... the fact that 2 children opted out also tells you something
- Noah David Simon
And even if the kids are talking about it, unless they already HAVE had some sort of talking-to about sex, their minds just aren't going to go there. I have a sister in *third* grade who wouldn't equate "marriage" with "oh my god, SEX!"
- heather ♥s fauns on mars.
Parents were able to opt out, as the article reads. A parent came up with the idea. None of the children were forced. The idea that gay marriage, and gay couples as something "we don't want our kids to learn" is completely homophobic. I mean I don't get a choice about my kids being taught that marriage between a man and a woman is "normal". If I'm not careful, they'll get exposed to heterosexuality. I don't know what I'd do if my son decides to start experimenting with girls!!
- B. Hatin
It's sad that you draw the line there. It stunts your kids emotional development. I hope they recover later with a help of peers and other responsible adults who are not squeamish about naturalness of human life.
- Bora Zivkovic
My "liking" of this applies to the article, not the attached pro-Prop8 rhetoric. Teaching children that people who love each other enough to commit for life is a reality is NEVER a bad thing. As Bora said, love is never a bad thing.
- Dana Franks
from twhirl
We do KNOW where the kids are standing since it says so in the article. And if you had your kid in this teacher's class (I can just imagine the consternation this would cause you) you could have opted out from them attending.
- Alex Scoble
so parents of children opted out... this makes your point moot. obviously there was contention in a "CHARTER SCHOOL" ... http://digg.com/politic... I DRAW THE LINE

you assume form doesn't follow function. you would fail any design school. there is discrepancy in good patterns, but in general cultural norms develop out of need. you might not want to believe it because of denial... but marriage is a functional element of society. Obama doesn't support GAY MARRIAGE! http://digg.com/politic... I DRAW THE LINE
- Noah David Simon
I find on long threads it is good to repeat the main point, with each comment. it draws the line http://digg.com/politic... and I will not draw a line on how many times I repeat that. It is a device that politicians use very effectively. that way when you get a sample of the main point. since 'yall ain't commenting anymore... guess the line was drawn
- Noah David Simon
Oh, I see, the Rove style of politics: a lie repeated enough times becomes the truth. If you read the linked post, it is not about design - it is about organic evolution of the society, including its institutions, including marriage, to fit the people's need. Design imposed by a 'designer' is always flawed. Design that evolves to fit a need usually is much more optimal. If you are an engineer - FAIL:
- Bora Zivkovic
http://scienceblogs.com/clock... "The conservative architect believed that there is no design without a Designer and that his years in design school make him the perfect person to CONTROL how the other people will utilize the park. He plays God. He scorns the proles. The liberal architect is wiser: she understands that the wisdom of the community is greater than anything she may have learned in school."
- Bora Zivkovic
@Bora ++ I think that it's a homophobic thing Another Noah is saying, that witnessing two women kiss is "sex education." It's an expression of feeling. And hooters != marriage. You keep conflating pornography and exploitation of women in businesses with commitment ceremonies and rituals of our society, like funerals. That, to me, is more disturbing than your fears of seeing homosexuals express their feelings.
- anna sauce
Anna I don't want children experiencing sexuality at a young age. Hetero or Homo. I don't want it. gay marriage evolves into nothing but a win for a Conservative. Bora, It is not engineering, it is masturbation when there is no effect but one's loss of DNA to the next generation or at best a weak link to succession. this isn't rhetoric... this is the reality of our society. whenever GAY MARRIAGE is brought up a Conservative wins the election. so maybe it is good design after all. natural selection
- Noah David Simon
...but I don't celebrate weakness of others. I don't encourage it. I like pornography, but I don't celebrate it as a productive element of my life. it is means to survival. certainly homosexuality is part of life. it is part of the pattern... it isn't the winning solution. it is part of our culture. it is the pattern... but it is not where we should encourage our goals. marriage is in fact a goal. it is an initiation of the cycle of life
- Noah David Simon
Why are homophobes so obsessed with sex and also think there is something wrong with sex? Sex is natural, and beautiful and a part of life. I hope Another NOAH gets to experience it that way at some point in the future - trust me, it is really good!
- Bora Zivkovic
nothing wrong with gay sex Bora... you said that. not me. it doesn't hurt me unless I am not monogamous and then I might be concerned with how easily illness spreads through anal sex. but it is not something that I would pass a law against because the responsibility is partly on me for having multiple sex partners
- Noah David Simon
What? I said what? Of course there is nothing wrong with gay sex. Or gay marriage. Or kids attending a wedding. It is you who has problems with all of that, seeing sex everywhere and seeing sex as something dirty and to be ashamed of.
- Bora Zivkovic
This discussion is devolving because for some reason sex got conflated with the ceremonial kiss at weddings. Can we all agree on how this discussion has derailed?
- anna sauce
you assumed I'm homophobic. that isn't true. I ask GAYs to respect difference. In the same way you expect me to respect your difference. taking away the protections our society has for people who get each other pregnant is not respect
- Noah David Simon
for you that kiss has no meaning. you don't deserve to be married if you think a kiss is marriage
- Noah David Simon
Homophobia is the ONLY reason for being against gay marriage. Prove me wrong. Yes, AnotherNOAH has derailed this thread from the very beginning, by the way he started it in the first place.
- Bora Zivkovic
Why should gays respect outdated societal norms that make them pariahs and people who try to enforce those norms? The onus is on the straights to respect gays, not the other way round.
- Bora Zivkovic
That kiss has a lot of meaning. Except that this meaning is not sexual, but you are incapable of seeing it as you see sex everywhere and feel heebie-jeebies when you think about it.
- Bora Zivkovic
obviously if you don't care about the needs of kids then I can't convince you of anything
- Noah David Simon
This is like debating a Creationist! Or a Republican. Can't nail them in one place to stay on one topic for a second. You talk about A, they ask "how about B" - a game a whack-a-mole. They win arguments by attrition, not reason, facts or logic.
- Bora Zivkovic
I assure you that I'm not a Creationist. I'm arguing using your semiotics. you are just so brain washed by your own rhetoric that you are in shock that it has no logic
- Noah David Simon
The needs of kids are to be raised in the world as it is, appreciating life and naturalness of it, warts and all, beauty and all. Needs of kids are not met if they are shielded or lied to or indoctrinated into bigotry. Lying to kids is bad for parents as well - when the Real World hits them on the head, kids come back and ask you "why did you lie to me?"
- Bora Zivkovic
even your language is coded from San Francisco. EXAMPLE: two definitions of attrition (1) sorrow for one's sins that arises from a motive other than that of the love of God (2) the act of weakening or exhausting by constant harassment, abuse, or attack ...you assume it is definition two, but in fact it is your code that is holding you back from seeing the truth. children need to see the truth... sure. but that truth has limitations. your coded language assumes pure transparency. you are hypocrites
- Noah David Simon
Oh, just a reminder that projection is a known psychological problem of conservatives. If you listen carefully, whatever they impugn on people they dislike, it is exactly the trait they do not like in themselves.
- Bora Zivkovic
What God? My kids have never been lied about its (or Santa Clause's) existence, thus they can grow up to be emotionally healthy. Your language was coded by James Dobson, apparently. Thus, definition (1) does not exist, only (2) does.
- Bora Zivkovic
personal attacks when the paradox is exposed... Tu Queque...
- Noah David Simon
Christianits have the inability to distinguish between person and idea. Love the sinner, hate the sin? Attack on the idea is not a personal attack unless you are so identifying with the idea that your own personhood is hidden even from yourself.
- Bora Zivkovic
Bora... I am neither a Christian or Cartesian. projection indeed. your label of conservative is only as good as it's relativity. my world was NYC and LA. conservative would be socialism. btw Marx believed in gender
- Noah David Simon
Now you're incoherent. There is no paradox and the only paradox you exposed is your stopping at the Piegatian stage of emotional development somewhere at the age of 7 or so, before being capable of distinguishing one's person from one's belonging to a bigger group - initially the family, later the religion, ideology, party, sports team or nation. Thus, criticism of the group's ideas are perceived as personal attacks.
- Bora Zivkovic
And, due to projection, attacks on others are done in the form of attacks on groups, with a silly notion that the other will be offended. How could I possibly be offended by your gibbersih about Marx or socialism or NYC and LA? Those were intended to make me defensive, but they only make me laugh. In order to make me huffy, you need to find something factually true about myself that I personally do not like about myself and pounce on that. Otherwise, attacks on groups you think I belong to have no power
- Bora Zivkovic
my dog got attacked. had to leave the argument to skunk bath. but stinking is not just a canine quality: it reeks around here of paradox. you speak projection when you call basic Marxist knowledge gibberish. you've been drinking the KOOLAID for so long that you don't even know the artificial flavor of it. I'm not attacking behavior... I'm defending lives. you have a right to do whatever you want, but when you effect others with tax dollars, they have a right to ask for different categorization.
- Noah David Simon
now address my points and stop the nonsense of names. it just discredits you with an impartial observer. the reason you attack me by labeling me a Christian Conservative is that you think you understand where I am coming from. you obviously don't. Christians for sure have studied these issues more then any other cannon, so their knowledge in sexuality is to be seriously respected. the...
- Noah David Simon
the only thing you know is that I oppose gay marriage. this could be for myriad of reasons. it is you who are projecting. because I never gave any moral reasons against this besides the survival of the species. the details of this are pointless to go into. children are important. their natural environment is essential.
- Noah David Simon
There is no other reason to oppose gay marriage but homophobic bigotry. And, Christian knowledge is not something to be respected - on any topic whatsoever. If it is possible to get something wrong, Christians get it wrong. Two millennia of idiocy collected a lot of crap which they are incapable of ridding themselves of. And, of all the topics in the world, they got sexuality the worst - they are the most sexually hung-up and perverse group in history (and various other religions as well).
- Bora Zivkovic
Finally, as you use typical rhetoric of the Right (particularly Christian right) and the typical illogical debating practices of the Right, I think I successfully placed you in the Right. If you don't like it, leave it.
- Bora Zivkovic
freedom only comes with restraint. you are so full of labels... it is obvious you can't hold back anything. Life did not create any social contracts, People in life do to protect themselves from destruction. you are so willing to kill the label of gay and straight that you have objectified everything else. this is not skin color this is behavior we are talking about. I'm not condemning...

OK Noah, you are against gay marriage as it doesn't produce kids. Did you know 5,000 children are being raised by gay parents, so by making it illegal you are putting kids in the foster system? Also- gay relationships have historical underpinnings, since Plato people have been having "Non-productive" relationships because they want to. Have you ever felt something with no productive, or practical feeling (like a gameboy or wii...) emotions aren't run on reason.

This is using the kids for political agenda. The wedding was done in a city hall not a church. The kids could have came to a wedding party if the teacher cared about the kids. To use children to further the political stance is paramount to Hamas hiding behind children while attacking Israel with Qassam rockets!

Since USA is socialist now, according to conservative talk radio, I'm wondering when we'll get a good transit system like all other socialist countries in Europe? Not to mention health care for everyone?
good transit system.. still waiting for ours in quasi-socialist britain! It's quite sad, most forms of modern transit originated/pioneered in Britain yet we have the worst in the developed world :(
- alphaxion
Japan has the best in the world from what I've seen.. Only system I've ever seen that apologises heavily for even a minutes delay! Tho, always remember that the Japanese system is a private company, not state run!
- alphaxion
What countries in Europe would be on this list of "all other socialist countries"?
- Brian Sullivan
alphaxion: I guarantee you that Britain's is worse than USAs.
- Robert Scoble
Guess the lack of a good transit system and universal health care proves that the USA is not socialist ... yet.
- Rene Wirtz
@Scobleizer Thanks to a socialist government once upon a time in Saskatchewan, Canada has a health-care system today.
- Jaffer
@robert I know Britains is worse than the USA.. expensive and piss poor. We created the railway system, yet we've fucked it up through a constant swapping of private, state, private, state then private once again. Along with the total lack of investment that goes with it while state and the money grubbing greed of private use. It's obscene, £70 to £120 just to travel from Leeds to London. Disgusting!
- alphaxion
"old socialist countries", i'm not so sure or very old!!! I can take the example of France !! we are not socialists since more of 10 years !
- Alice Cordonnier
They just did a study of extending DC's metro system down into Fredericksburg which is 50miles south of it. While it came out to be several billion dollars, the idea of it was cool to see just because it had been considered. Would be wonderful but will never happen.
- Dean Clark
Mass transit here is pretty bad, 75' to the bus and when I get downtown I have to walk a whole block. And I only have 4 times to choose from.
- Clarence Westberg
@alphaxion: You are correct, the privatization made British Railways from one of the best to one of the worst. Strange thing is, even after seeing things go downhill in the UK, the Dutch government decided to semi-privatize its railways, making it a lot worse. Luckily, Holland is a small country so effects are going to be minimal.
- Rene Wirtz
Isn't "according to conservative talk radio" fairly unreliable? :)
- Louis Gray
@Brian: from the top of my head: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Greece. And now of course, the former Eastern Bloc countries, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia.

There's enough dumbing down of America without repeating the stuipid socialist accusations.

Phoenix just opened up a light rail system and ridership is 30% higher than they predicted.
- Francine Hardaway

Rene -- all those countries are socialist in your mind? What countries in Europe or elsewhere would be classed as non-socialist?
- Brian Sullivan
@Brian: not only in my mind, though, these countries are all based in socialist principles, even though some countries don't have a socialist government per se anymore. Countries that are not socialist are: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Romania, Turkey and Bulgaria.
- Rene Wirtz
Francine: light rail in Seattle has been a compleate boondoggle. It's not about predicted ridership, it needs to be about how many are served for how much per person.
- Christian Burns
I would love to have a decent light rail system here. Our only option to get anywhere is to drive. We live in a gorgeous patch of farmland, and the traffic is starting to smog everything up.
- Karoli
The lack of good rail system of any kind in the US is a travesty. I've never understood why that was the case. One would think you could be proud of a good rail system. It has nothing to do with being socialist of otherwise. Every time I go to Boston (to pick a US city), I enjoy hopping onto a train and just getting to places
- Deepak Singh
regardless of the underlying intentions (socialism, liberalism, etc.) hasn't the time for universal healthcare and mainstream mass transportation finally come. I mean dammit people, stop the excuses and get some work done. What we need is the ability as a populous to prevent our government officials from getting paid if they fail to do their jobs...sessions over, and there are still bills on the table; sorry but I guess you don't get paid.
- Bob Blunk
Christian: Over what period of time do you amortize the cost? A light rail system is a long, long term investment. Taking into account projected growth in the area alongside the longevity of the system, I'd imagine it's quite the bargain.
- Karoli
Robert: I am starting to agree. We have a broken system that relies on insurance tied to employers. That must change.
- Christian Burns
I think the biggest problem in the US is the sheer size of cities. New York and Chicago are the first and only ones to have adopted a subway system early enough on to actually offer viable public transport. In a city like Atlanta, there's 2 subway/lightrail lines, and there's over 5mio people and there's a lot of commuting.
- Rene Wirtz
Karoli: I live in rural area, transit just doesn't fit into our lives. Central planning to fix a decentralized problem.
- Christian Burns
Rene, American cities aren't really that large, and definitely carry small populations. Tokyo does just fine with a wonderful rail system. The challenge is that to add transit now would take a lot of effort to fit into existing infrastructure, but IMO it has to be done
- Deepak Singh
Loving trains in Japan and loved the trains when I lived in Portland. I would kill for high-speed between Los Angeles and San Francisco, so let's hope it comes soon. Decent but long article with some good points about US and high-speed trains here: http://is.gd/mrYY
- Ken Brady
@Deepak: I disagree that American cities are not that large; traveling from one end of Atlanta Metro to the other is almost a 2 hour drive. There are countries in Europe where a 2 hour drive means crossing borders into another country. I do agree that a mass transit system must be added to a lot of cities. And now is the time. But, I do know that there is going to be a lot of...
- Rene Wirtz
Rene -- do you have some sort cite that backs your assertion about which countries in Europe are socialist/non socialist (or based on socialist principles -- whatever that means). What about Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Russia?
- Brian Sullivan
actually, the malaise in the british rail system dates to when the state took over them during the 40's. A lot of stations and routes were loss making but paid for by the more profitable. When the government took control they began a systematic shutdown and withdrawl of funding from the system until its eventual re-privatisation. The only problem is that the system is in such bad need of funds that private companies now running it don't want to invest and are simply milking it for all the money they can get
- alphaxion
I'm holding out for those awesome European family friendly parks and museums
- Erin @queenofspain
I'm just pissed I have to listen to this brainless sheep-driven socialism drivel for the next eight years. Baaahhh. Baaahhh.
- AJ Kohn
@alphaxion: So, at least the government kept whatever lines were more or less profitable up and running, doing maintenance and planning. After privatization, the maintenance and planning part got dropped, since it is by far the most expensive, without having a clear ROI. Private companies are always gonna be looking at the bottom line and with a vast operation like a country-wide infrastructure to maintain it's not gonna look good.
- Rene Wirtz
Rene -- I don't see any mention of most the countries in your list in that article. Is that the best information you have?
- Brian Sullivan
Operating a profitable mass transit system within the US is difficult because of your wildly variable population density. Improving your archaic zoning system would be a good first step.
- Steven Cains
Um..how come there's no mention of Amtrak? The challenge isn't just getting govt. to set up a mass transit system but also getting folks to use it. There's a lot of competition from alternative forms of transportation like planes and automobiles. Let's not forget that every time the gas prices go down, public interest in using public transportation goes down as well.
- MiaD
@Brian: I'm sure I can find all of them, but I'm too tired and lazy to google at the moment. You can believe me or not, either way, the US is not even near to what they think is socialism.
- Rene Wirtz
Child care for new moms. Doctors who pay house calls. Three months vacations. Sign me up.

We're building light rail in the Dallas area. The problem is getting to the rail stations and finding a place to park. They closed the route that went right past our house - on a main road! The parking lot is clogged with cars from cities to the north that don't pay transit taxes. We can't use our own trains!
- Julie Barrett
from twhirl
Do socialist countries also get high-speed rail? The US could really use a good high-speed rail network.
- KyleHase
from twhirl
we have been trying to get light rail in Kansas City forever.
- Rodney Taylor
that's just it tho, "British Rail" as it was when it was nationalised barely put any money into the system at all and only grudgingly did any maintentance. No upgrades were made, no investment in new rolling stock. It was a total shambles. Stations fell into disrepair and entire routes were left to rot or were ripped up.

chris - way to avoid any position at all. +1 for a completely empty statement. You implied that a 0% cap gains rate created a China that is a net creditor nation. Or would you like to tap dance out of that position ad well?
- Brian Roy
Hey, you decided to go ad hominem... I just pointed out the error I your thinking... Not sure I was in attack mode. Care to answer the question? Is China being a creditior nation a direct result of a 0% cap gains rate?

Hong Kong's transit system is something too! :D
- Michael Forian
I'm from Europe and now am living in NYC. I find that NYC public transit (subways, buses, taxis) is actually fairly decent by my European standards. Sure, it's sometimes dirty and crowded, but it gets you to places and runs with good frequency. If you live in the city close to the transit, you don't need to have a car at all.
- Jaanus Kase
Ha ha.. wonderful perspective - even the Democrats are so far right of centre in European terms to be ever be called Socialists.
- Ian D. Nock
@Ian: *highfive* I keep saying that, too, but no-one believes me! A lot of Americans equate the Democratic Party with socialism, while I was taught in school that in the US you can choose between right and extreme right.
- Rene Wirtz
Believe me, Robert, you don't want these. I'm from Hungary and I know what I'm talking about. Social healthcare sucks... Even if you live a totally healthy life, you pay the same insurance as those who smoke and drink all day long. (And get the same service)
- Berci Mesko, MD
people who have not experienced socialized services do not get it. They Idealize them!
- Leonard Boord
@Berci Mesko and those who drive and those who eat too much or badly, exercise too little, have sport injuries, unprotected sex, have dangerous and stressful jobs etc if we start thinking in those terms not many people would be entitled to healthcare at all. Personally I prefer not to judge and have universal healthcare combined with decent education and prevention plans
- M F
I am from the government I am here to cure you....
- Leonard Boord
Just a question: Is it really true that the current system in the US means that people who take care of themselves and use little healthcare don't subsidize those who are less healthy? Given the high costs of basic insurance I find that almost impossible to believe but it would be interesting to know some facts especially when these 'socialized' vs 'whatever we call it' comparisons are being made.
- Robin Barooah
@Robin: as far as I know everyone has Medicare tax withheld form their paycheck even if they are not insured throug Medicare. (I may be wrong though.)
- Rene Wirtz
@M F: I understand, but having universal healthcare means you get an average service no matter how hard you work in life. Nurses, doctors have an incredibly low income compared to those working in the US. The whole system is far overloaded and nobody has time for you. I know there are serious problems in the US healthcare system as well, but I don't think you really want socialized medicine. Though, you should give it a try yourself. :)
- Berci Mesko, MD
From what I have experienced (I grew up in the UK, and now live in the US) neither 'ideological extreme' is particularly great. There are some aspects of healthcare that make it difficult to run from a purely capitalistic perspective - i.e. accidents happen to even the most careful people, demand can potentially be infinite, etc, and at the point of use there is no market and consumers are vulnerable...
- Robin Barooah
...and there are aspects that make it difficult to run from a purely 'socialized' perspective - i.e. a lowest common denominator service may limit quality of life unfairly, those who take care of themselves end up responsible for those who don't, demand is potentially infinite, metrics are hard and medical decisions become politicized etc.
- Robin Barooah
To me this means that our tools are too blunt to solve the problem as one thing. Either we need more sophisticated tools (which I don't see), or the complex problem needs to be broken down into simpler ones that we can solve with out blunt tools (which I think is eminently possible). I believe that Obama is sophisticated enough to recognize this. Whether or not he can implement it given the vested interests he has to work with is the real test.
- Robin Barooah
In the 19th century, the US built an incredible rail system that tied the nation together, all with private money. The entrepreneurs are now called "Robber Barons". It's little wonder that private enterprises doesn't want to step up again.
- Robert Hafer
@Berci Mesko I live in Britain, I'm familiar with a national health service free to the point of service, with all its faults.Having said that I don't want to put my health and trust in the hands of a company that thinks about its profit first, I don't want them to do unnecessary procedures when I have plenty of money (as has had happened in some private clinics in Europe) and deny me care when I need it the most. And I don't want anyone else to be in that position.
- M F
what is interesting -- how many people have opinions on socialism/socialists, while context they mention reveals they have either little or no clue about true socialism and how those historical examples of *socialism* were far from schoolbook definitions... and then-love-now-hate from ex-little-cousins in Central Europe looks like they hasn't learned lessons of history, rather go the opposite way (hint - negation is not productive and helps only in very short term).
- A.T.
@M-F and Berci: some countries in Western Europe have adopted a two tiered system: 1) base care, including prevention, pharmaceuticals and dental, for everyone (everyone pays for it, everyone can benefit from it) and 2) for an extra premium you can add more specialized items to the base insurance, like private hospital rooms or extended dental plan or prolonged manual therapy. This way, everyone has the same base insurance coverage and for those who can afford it, they can get a better or broader coverage.
- Rene Wirtz
@alphaxion Europe is a lot more compact than the US. so don't hold your breath about getting a transit system for everyone. Health care is so expensive because of insurance. Our economic system is a house of cards - one that is on the verge of tumbling down. More government is never a solution; it always adds to the problems. Real solution is growing food & shopping locally, supporting communities, decentralizing. That is in OUR best interest but not the best interests of the global economy's plutocracy.
- Internet Strategist
Transit is partially affected by population density, exclusive of politics. The western U.S. differs greatly from Europe, though I will grant that European nations discourage auto use more, thus incentivizing mass transit.

I should clarify that I was talking about intercity travel, not intracity travel (though the same issues apply to southern California - who's gonna build a rail line connecting Ontario to Orange County?).

The only time I have ever in real-life witnessed (and participated in) one of those movie-scene-sudden-synchronized-dance moments was when this song came on at a gay nighclub I was at...literally everyone on the dance floor did the routine from the video. I wish I had footage. It felt AWESOME. :D

As I speed through through Big Love on DVD, I have to admit really liking it; far more than I would've expected, but I'm curious as to what real life LDS/Mormons think of the show. Thoughts?
They do, Sparky. I got into some heated discussions around election time re: Mormons and their participation/contributions to Yes on 8 being passed in California.
- Derrick
How quaint - their silly underwear had me convinced they must be a bare step above the Amish.
- Sparky
Bump, since I'm curious what Mormons think and one hasn't responded yet.
- Rochelle
Me too, Rochelle. What I like about the show is that how these little sects of old-school fundamentalists are struggling with and against the current modern Mormon. I wonder how much is Hollywood spin, and how much is based on researched fact or actual cases.
- Derrick
Struggling against modern mormon? I think they are struggling against modern period.
- Sparky
Derrick, I'm only about a week away from starting to watch Big Love! :D
- Rochelle
It's good, Rochelle. I should be done before Monday (got to watch all those college football bowl games don't cha know). Then, I can watch the new season, yay! I just wished someone would've, y'know, contributed to this thread. :(
- Derrick
Me too. I know there are Mormons on FF, but I'm not going to call them out if they're not comfortable (or interested in) sharing their opinions. Oh well!
- Rochelle
I love that show; the salt lake city newspaper tracks local reaction to it, and it seems really on. There is a real interesting multimedia piece about a family just like Bill's in that there are three wives
- RAPatton
If you search through old FF links I posted serveral things including the multimedia piece last spring.

Lots of people love to make fun of Mormons and I totally don't get the religion at all, but I think the lifestyle they live is just dandy and I've never known a Mormon that I didn't like or wouldn't trust my kid with.
- Chrimmus Tad
Tad, I hear you. I went to school with a bunch of Mormons and they never gave this old black queer any flack. I'd love to talk religion out with them, because I'm curious, but I don't mean any disrespect. Like I said, I find the show fascinating, and what to know what their take would be on it.
- Derrick
I love this show. It's one of my favorites on TV and I can't wait for the new season to start!
- cecily
I love Big Love. :) I just finished re-watching last season so I'd be ready for the premiere.
- Alix Whitmire
Perhaps it's appropriate to note that when the whole polygamy affair was happening in Texas in 2008, a couple of the Mormons on FriendFeed took great pains to note that the FLDS (who believes in polygamy) is in no way connected to the LDS (who renounced polygamy over 100 years ago).
- Ontario Emperor
I'm not Mormon, but as Ontario said, I've spent a lot of time studying Mormonism and its offshoots. My understanding is that there are actually a lot of Mormons and even some polygamous households who watch the show regularly. For one thing, the writers skip most of the religion behind the Principle and focus on the culture, so neither side feels attacked. And it shows something unknown by most- most polygamous households are "independent Mormons" and live in the Salt Lake City area in relative peace.
- Dana Franks
I do wish they'd go to more trouble to explain what's different about the Mormon wedding ceremony (yes, even the mainstream one) and what makes them believe they are doing God's will by building as big of a family as possible so they can be bound to each other through eternity. Their beliefs on heaven are very different than Protestants and Catholics.
- Dana Franks
As a Mormon, I can tell you that I don't believe in having as big a family as possible nor do most of the Mormon's I know. I'm sure there are some out there. But for every religion you can find some that take things differently. And our beliefs on heaven aren't very different. I'm not sure why you are saying that.

Like I have been telling my co-workers. The change that is sweeping the nation has nothing to do with Obama. He is only the figure head. And he represents the change in psyche and ideology of America.
- Bob Blunk
The key point is not about the specific technology (the Blackberry) but about the way he communicates with all these people that keep him informed--some of whom would be outside the White House, even outside the government altogether.
- Tommy Williams
probably time to update that...seems draconian
- Adam Singer
@Daniel I imagine it's because all his email correspondence can enter the public domain. So it's not the Blackberry that's the issue here, but the use of email overall. At least that's how I read it.
- Steve Rubel
@Daniel Boyd - you mean the current Whitehouse runs on Exchange.
- Kevin Gamble
The issue is about having to archive every email under the Presidential Records Act more than the security.
- ursi
Thank you ursi for being the sole voice of reason and sanity in this thread.
- Admiral Anika
There is no issue with a BlackBerry and archiving email under the PRA as a BB is merely an "extension" of Outlook in that the handheld merely reads email within Exchange. I think, as the article somewhat mentioned but failed to go too in-depth about, is like what Steve just mentioned: the potential security issue surrounding POTUS sending email. However, this should be relatively easy to solve using the right mix of PKI and other industry standard information security mechanisms. Govt adoption is the Q.
- Scott Jarkoff
If a President says or writes something that is recordable - and technology is irrelevant, it could be a magnetophone and 8-track - it can be subpoenad by Congress. The article explores the tensions between the need for a President to have confidentiality about important matter of the state, and the need to open up new mode of communication fit for the 21st century mindset of the facebook generation.
- Bora Zivkovic
so now that Obama is disabled from email, shouldn't the snarky left humiliate him like they did McCain? (being that McCain is disabled from using a computer for all time)
- Noah David Simon
@bora - facebook generation isn't this generation at all. it's about the internet. facebook here today gone tomorrow - the internet platform as the amazing invention IT is stays.
- Patricia
Bora++ This is the same reason Bush gave up his personal email back in 2000, and why, to many historians regret, the Presidents have stopped keeping personal diaries. The threat of subpoena is so powerful (and Congress so enjoys leaking information) that it's just not practical to keep those records (I once thought of creating an online diary system in Bermuda or something so VIPs could keep diaries outside of legal claims, but never got around to it).
- Andrew Leyden
"facebook generation" has nothing to do with the actual Facebook site, or with a particular age - it is a shorthand term for a mindset of openness in communication.
- Bora Zivkovic
What is new is that Obama is the first President with that mindset, as opposed to a bubble-boy, smoke-filled back-rooms, secretive types that the previous 43 Presidents were. The laws, customs and trappings of his new job are going to be conflicting with his modern instincts towards openness.
- Bora Zivkovic
@bora, telecom industry exec here. that's like saying america is about the pie when it's really about the country ;)
- Patricia
It's a shame his "modern instincts towards openness" only flow one direction: out to his followers, in a very tightly scripted manner. Any questions or inquiries flowing in will be ignored.
- ComicList
@Charles - Well we've seen what happens when he takes an unscripted question from an actual citizen.
- Brian Newman
@Charles - why do you think that? From what I could see during the campaign, he listens and responds. He will not always respond the way we like, but he is the President, not us, so he needs to make the tough decisions not the armchair presidents. But he listens, it's not one-way at all.
- Bora Zivkovic
@Bora, during this campaign, and past campaigns, when he faces questions he doesn't like, such as the ones about his past and his experiences, he either answers vaguely or untruthfully, or shuts down the questioner. He also has simply eliminated the competition in campaigns. He clearly understands and uses social networking, but not to interact honestly, only to influence and expand his support.
- ComicList
Just another pitfall of being in the limelight, and another reason I shall continue to not want to be president.
- BCK
@Charles - I will now, just like everyone on the planet, choose to either answer your question vaguely or untruthfully, or shut down the questioner. And I am not even running for office. Which one do you prefer? ;-)

I'm so proud that people found a guy who can use email if he is allowed for president. I wanted more then that. I wanted a guy who could lead... and so far he isn't leading... he is wading in all these issues going around. I'm all for the wise say less theory... but there is a fiscal crises and stupid people are still high on the idea of email. he isn't president yet,,, but give us a sign Obama. if you give us leadership now then the market stabilizes because fiscal people are terrified of this dude.

- Bora Zivkovic

Bill Clinton rarely talked about Al Queda. Is this a prediction of the secrecy we should expect from Obama? What is the matter? the election is over and it is irresponsible to not dialog. this is poor leadership.
- Noah David Simon
my guess is he is expecting this to blow up in his face and he is laying low. http://digg.com/politic... email won't help his cause if he don't have a birth certificate. this sucks for the people in the US who are facing a political climate where Putin thinks Obama is a pushover. ...but hey email... wow!

People don't realize the legal ramifications of not having legal protection like this. Securing the 'sanctity of marriage' between a man and woman IN A CHURCH is fine with me. But those outside the Church should be treated just like any other citizen with the same freedoms we have.
- Douglas Karr
from twhirl
Then the State should not call legal unions that it sanctions marriage. It should be some other legal mechanism, and marriages should be left to churches. http://friendfeed.com/e...
- ComicList
BS. Marriage is not a religious institution - it predates organized religion by at least many tousands of years. Besides, they aren't looking for churches to redefine their definition of marriage. Churches are still free to be as intolerant and bigoted as they always have been. They are looking for the same legal rights in the eyes of the law as hetero people enjoy. Anything less is discrimination. Period.
- Maverick
@Maverick, calling all churches bigoted and intollerant is also intollerance and bigoted. A lot of religious people have no issue with gay marriage. Tollerance isn't an argument you can stand on if you're also intollerant, and a generalized, assumptious statement like yours to me is just that. It's not a sword you can use but then not also practice.
- Patricia
Have any of you actually read what that protest is advocating? A militant and thereby violent protest will significantly harm your cause. It will turn people who support you against you and set back your cause by decades. Once you go down that road, there's no turning back.
- Chris Mayer
@Chris, I agree. I'm not a fan of the approach either. I voted NO on 8, but for me violence, hate, is not the answer to anything.
- Patricia
@Patricia I didn't call churches intolerant and bigoted, I said they are free to act that way if they want too. By not allowing same-sex marriage, they are demonstrating that they are exactly that but it's really not relavent to the conversation anyway as what they gay and lesbian community is looking for is LEGAL recognition of their union, not religious recognition.
- Maverick
@Maverick, you said: Churches are still free to be as intolerant and bigoted as they always have been. That's very generalized. I'm Christian. Should I not vote for gay marriage next time, or disown my gay, married relative? Not all people of the church are against gay marriage, bigoted or intollerant and neither are all churches.
- Patricia
I think that my point was very clear that it is not a religious issue, it's a legal issue. Clearly I wasn't referencing churches that are allowing same-sex marriages, but yes the others are intolerant. I don't see any problem with stating the obvious.
- Maverick
@maverick, a generalized comment references everything. Nothing in your statement said anything about specific churches, and that's the damaging thing. I could state the obvious about a lot of things and be angry, but the truth is, that doesn't seem to be very effective in truly changing anything.
- Patricia
Maverick, then turn that legal union into a purely legal union, and stop calling it marriage. Marriage was created by God, who predates organized religion by eternity. There's nothing bigoted or intollerant about believing the Word of God, but I can understand how that belief might seem odd to you.
- ComicList
Charles: Marriage was not "created" by God. Marriage was created by two individuals who wanted to unite in a deep and meaningful relationship built on the love they shared for each other. Whether that was Adam and Eve, or Joe the Man and Stacy the Woman, is irrelevant. But I don't think God created the concept of marriage.
- Eric Geller
Churches that supported this amendment lost track of their purpose. Christians should never seek to be exclusionary, yet that's exactly what they celebrated. To be fair, it wasn't just the LDS contingent. Many evangelicals, particularly Baptists were as vocal and incendiary.
- Karoli
Churches shouldn't seek to be exclusionary? Christian churches should always reach out to sinners, but should never condone or accept sin.
- ComicList
Maybe we can get an answer on this thread Charles: what about 3 or 4 people in a committed relationship? Does that count? Or is the arbitrary number 2?
- Craig Eddy
So how does funding, advocacy and celebrating Prop 8 square with reaching out? It accomplishes exactly the opposite.
- Karoli
There's positively no reason a church should support actions it deems to be a sin, nor should it be surprising that one would support a law that suppresses actions it deems to be a sin. Just because one opposes the act doesn't mean one hates the actor.
- Craig Eddy
Wall between church and state goes both ways. Just as state cannot dictate to churches, neither should churches dictate to state, nor advocate for discriminatory legislation that fits their theological outlook.
- Karoli
Karoli: the First Amendment says no such thing. It's freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion. And I believe it was the citizens of California that voted, not the churches.
- Craig Eddy
Craig, in the "family llc" that I have proposed, I have said several times it would be any number of people of any gender. I haven't worked out how children would fit into all this, however.
- ComicList
Charles: right, and I agree with that on the grounds that the number (2) is just as "arbitrary" as saying that the gender mix (man/woman) is arbitrary. But I don't think I've had an opponent of Prop 8 answer my query as to "how many".
- Craig Eddy
Karoli, I agree churches should spend money on tasks other than state propositions, but not because it isn't "reaching out."
- ComicList
@CharlesLePage That's not outreach. It's faceslapping. Using public laws and the airwaves to condemn an entire group of people is in no way outreach. Well, maybe outreach for sinning masochists.
- Karoli
By the way, how does freedom of religion translate to interference in state law?
- Karoli
Ummm, how does one say a church shouldn't advocate for its beliefs? Because if it can't, what good is it? And if you write laws to neuter that, rendering the church impotent, then haven't you enforced de-facto freedom FROM religion?
- Craig Eddy
By advocacy, I am specifically referring to authorship, sponsorship and expenditure of tax-exempt dollars to pass laws which are probably unconstitutional.
- Karoli
Politics and church should not mingle. Church and "being slightly off norm" are not compatible but church is joined by choice. Constitution safeguards the norm and the "slightly off norm" because choice of birthplace is not involved. Hence church and Constitution can not interact. In this case they did. The whole train of state came to a grinding halt. Looking in from the (distant) outside I'd say the US has made a dangerous step regardless of the issue at hand.
- Henk de Kruyff
What makes a "church" any different from, say, a labor union?
- Craig Eddy
@CraigEddy constitutional protection. simple as that.
- Karoli
Karoli, do we have evidence that tax exempt dollars were used to pass a law?
- ComicList
This is another reason the State should not define churches and churches should not have tax exempt dollars.
- ComicList
Solution is even more simple. Don't choose to be gay. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Akiva Moskovitz
I could no more choose to be gay than I could choose to have an Italian heritage.
- l0ckergn0me
C'mere l0ckergn0me. I'll remove your Italian genes with this pair of tweezers.
- Rochelle
Are emoticons and exclamation marks disclaimers? Or do I just need a sense of humor...?
- Mona Nomura
Ya just like my Dad choosing to be forced to leave my town because he's Japanese-American. Not funny.
- Rodfather
I really do want to know why some people foster such hate for something that is none of their business. I know many will point to the bible, but where does it say "hate the shit out of them and treat them as non-humans"? I've not read those words anywhere in that book!
- alphaxion
Lighten up, people; I'm snarking against the people who think that homosexuality is a choice.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Hey Rodfather - at least they were forced to leave, my ancestors were just blown up. YAY!
- Mona Nomura
Me too.. my family originated from Hiroshima too..
- Rodfather
If it doesn't directly involve your PENIS or VAGINA, shut the FUCK UP.
- l0ckergn0me
Mona, I think the "LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" kind of gives away the fact that it was a joke.
- Rochelle
I knew Akiva was kidding, Rochelle! It's just that I've seen TOO many people get offended or take things the wrong way. ;)
- Mona Nomura
Alphaxion - Not that I agree, but I think a lot of the people who use the Bible as the justification for their hatred of homosexuality point to the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, wherein God wiped out two entire cities over his disgust at their lack of morals (and explicitly sexual "deviations" including homosexuality).
- Fa La La La Lindsay
True, Mona. Luckily, that isn't happening in this thread!
- Akiva Moskovitz
I want to read more about Chris Pirillo's vagina. :)
- Mattb4rd
Mattb4rd, stay out of my vagina. Even Ponzi isn't privy to my vagina.
- l0ckergn0me
Lindsay... I love when people use this story cause it essentially says it's ok to send out your two virgin teenage daughters to get raped :(
- Johnny Worthington
If it's fine for a straight person to do something, why isn't it fine for a gay person to do the same thing? That's like saying white people can't get married, but it's okay for black people to get married. And those of Asian decent can only get married to other Asians. WTF? No. It's wrong, pure and simple.
- l0ckergn0me
@Lindsay The same people seem to manage to ignore the "Though shalt not kill" bit. Too many people pick and choose their morals from whatever religion they belong to to suit their own morals. I'm off to make an image of what is in the heavens above. ;)
- Chris Nixon
It's called discrimination, l0ckergn0me. I just got into a little pow-wow in a thread of my own today: http://friendfeed.com/e...
- Derrick
It's all to do with religion: IMO the religious infighting going on in the western world needs to stop. people should have a right to be as they are rather than as someone else's religion says they should be.
- Sharron Field
from twhirl
the thing is tho, yeah there was the story of those two places, but where does it say "hate them and take away their rights to be equal citizens"? The hate is coming from somewhere else. They also totally ignore the new testament that tries to tell people to love each other regardless of who or what they are. There is something else powering their bigotry and they use bullshit like religion to mask it.
- alphaxion
Personally, I don't know why the religious fanatics don't just sit back and wait for the fire and brimstone to start flying again. Don't they think He can still bring it?
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
I've read about those who want to let them do something that is effectively identical but give it another name - civil partnership. The best analogy that I have heard was from Madge Weinestine. "That's like saying only whites get to be called president, so Obama will have to be called chancellor". If it were race there would be no excuses.. but have the gall to love someone of the same gender and it's perfectly fine?
- alphaxion
You know what sucks? Growing up, I never thought marriage would be an option for me. I'd be a confirmed bachelor and have a cat and houseplants. Having the right to marry be right there, and then snatched away...if it happened to you, you'd be outraged. Strip away, politics, religion, Biblical verse, etc. Being a "have-not" sucks, and its wrong.
- Derrick
It's not just ridiculous, Rahsheen - it's immoral to have banned gay marriage.
- l0ckergn0me
The platform they campaigned on was "protect marriage". My claim is if one is so concerned about protecting the sanctity of marriage, then the obvious thing to do is ban divorce. http://www.kpao.org/blog...
- Dave C
Don't worry scro! There are plenty of 'tards out there living really kick ass lives. My first wife was 'tarded. She's a pilot now.
- bob
i wonder if some factions are hoping to bury her now (releasing stories and such) so as to avoid her coming back in later elections
- bob
@bob i know *I* would want her buried, for sure. Can you imagine Palin for President, 2012? *shudder* EDIT: oops, i guess I meant @bob, not @shodan. enjit shows usernames, not nicknames, which kind of makes replying to someone kind of difficult...
- David Adam
@bob, yeah, I'm guessing that's what Fox wants now, and that's why they're reporting it.
- j1m
I think they're running this stuff because A) it's juicy gossip, and B) the election is over and they need something to talk about.
- Gabe
I think this comes from the Newsweek reporting, which was embargoed until after the election. This sort of "how it's made" stuff is very interesting to me.
- Paul Buchheit
I don't like talking zombies, neither do i like their assistants... But i CANNOT believe that it's possible not to know that africa is a continent.
- Kirill Bolgarov
and of course this never came out during the campaign because? And any answer of "because it would damage the campaign" are null and void when you're faced with choices that are flawed and those flaws should be pointed out before it's over to stop a turkey winning. Such corruption in the press *shakes head*
- alphaxion
we were how close to this woman being a heartbeat away? unbelievable.
- Jamie
You can't say there is no continuation in the republican party, if not of policy at least of intelligence level.
- Amit Morson
this reminds me of this one time, where we had (have) this president, who was like "oh, India and Pakistan fighting, testing nukes, blahblahblah" and then the reporter was like "who are the leaders of those countries mr. president?" and he was like ".................." this was after he was elected and in office, mind you. now at least we'll have 4 years of a president that can get past the $100 level of "who wants to be a millionaire."
- grant fox
You cannot be serious. This is the stupidest thing I've heard. Seriously?
- Richard
My estimation of McCain has gone down even further. Sarah Palin is a rube who didn't belong in the veep slot but it's not like she forced her way into that role. It looks like the McCain campaign is trying to blame the entire loss on her - and that is supremely sh***y. Did the fact that she not know simple geography not come up in their vetting? She may be an idiot but that makes them even bigger idiots for choosing her in the first place.
- Carla Thompson
I understand she went to public school, but you cannot seriously believe she didn't know this stuff. On the other hand maybe you all do since you believed everything "the one" told you.
- Richard
I just don't believe this. Let the McCain factions fight and scratch and blame -- and stay clear. ;-)
- Chris Baskind
Hey! 4000 years ago when a bearded white angry god made the continents (burying all those dinosaur bones for us to find), he made Africa as a whole. He did not put the countries there....
- Thaths
Had no idea he had cancer. I was planning to give my eldest Jurassic Park to read soon.
- RAPatton
Campbell Brown broke into All-Obama Day on CNN with the news. Shocking.
- Cyndy
His views on Global Warming notwithstanding, he was a great sf writer with a keen imagination for what's possible. Jurassic Park was the very first "adult" book I ever read and to this day stands as one of my favorites. He'll be missed.
- Eric P
Awesomesauce...I always liked Steve and this just reinforces that.
- Alex Scoble
Jason is a Falcons fan from way back. It is physically impossible for him to say a single good thing about Steve Young.
- Cyndy
I don't know how many of you saw the followup, but Steve's wife subsequently clarified that her husband was not making a public endorsement one way or the other. (I'd bet he'll vote no, however.)
- Ontario Emperor
from fftogo
I'm with Jason. I can't bring myself to say anything nice about him. lol. It's football related, though.
- Erin @queenofspain
I grew up with Montana, Rice (pre Raiders), Lott, and Young!! Insulting them (and the '9ers) is like insulting me!!!
- Mona Nomura
from fftogo
Steve's a great guy. Of note, a follow-on article in the Chronicle had him saying he was neutral and never endorses politics. It was his wife who made the move.
- Louis Gray
I'd love to see some stats of Mormons who have donated against the prop, or just those against it. I feel like the focus has only been on Mormons who have voted for the prop.
- Jesse Stay
Louis, I'd argue that any time you donate $50,000, your husband probably had some say in it. :D Shoot... my first $25 to Obama during the primaries had agreement from Jason even though he wasn't entirely sure he was on the Obama train.
- Cyndy
