Watch this and tell me that Raphael Saadiq aint THE ISH! You can tell he'll be with us for a long time to come. When it comes to the new crop of dudes with guitars like John Mayer, Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, and Jason Mraz it's easy to see that Saadiq has got them outclassed by several degrees.

From NPR's Bob Boilen: "I'm not sure how I expected Raphael Saadiq to translate his old-school soul and R&B to the acoustic confines of the Tiny Desk, but I know I hadn't imagined two acoustic guitars. For his Tiny Desk Concert, Saadiq brought a remarkable accompanist in guitarist Rob Bacon. The two had just gotten off a plane, but in their impeccably tailored suits and their grand...

Don't miss "Sure Hope You Mean It" at the 7 minute mark!
- Christopher Harley
ZOMG, this file is huge. The track is 11 minutes long, but it's one of my favorite songs ever. If there's a Heaven, surely Thelonious is there tickling the ivories.
- Derrick
I just listened to this all the way through, it's simply fantastic.
- Derrick
Listening now. Ahhh.... :) My version on The Columbia Years, Disc 2 is only 5:19. ??
- Ayşe E.
Ayse, it sounds like the version I have (from The Essential Thelonious Monk) is a live version, if that makes any difference.
- Derrick
w00t! Looks like I need the Essential Monk. :) (still groovin')
- Ayşe E.
Monk is the best! The Composer is one of my favorite albums of all time. ALL TIME! Can't wait to give this a listen.

A pro soloist would have to find it easy to solo over Monk's vamping. He lays such a solid foundation in which you hear the melody line the whole time, it's amazing. Even the second roll through the solo before he cuts entirely. Lovely, lovely stuff.
- Rick Cogley
Vince Guaraldi seems to have been influenced by Monk, but who wouldn't be. Doesn't this tune "remind" you of some of the Peanuts music? I think there's at least a modal relationship.
- Rick Cogley
I'm too old to already have an opinion about them. Now I have a starting point to investigate.
- Mark Horne
This is awesome! And I love that I was at some of the gigs with you;) I have to agree with seeing Great Northern live - it becomes a visceral experience because you truly FEEL their music. In your bones. Also, ditto on why Ida Maria was so awesome. Unexpected and brilliant.
- Lis Miller
Also? This has gotten me so excited about what's in store for 2010, especially with live shows. Already excited for the two January ones.
- Lis Miller
Oh, no. She's about fifteen, actually. She's the last one left of our cats that we got within the first couple of years of moving to that house in '92. She's still spry, though - caught and ate a bird today!

Cameras are my wall and have been for years. This is the first year I've been without one for most of it (iPhone excepted) and have been happier for it. As for the other stuff, I still can't strike up conversations with strangers.

http://letters.salon.com/books... "Imagine being Sisyphus Depression eats away at everything you think it good about yourself. Every day you get up, and push a rock up a hill like in the Greek myth of Sisyphus, and at the top it rolls down to the bottom again. You are condemned to do this every day- perhaps sometimes finding hope in press releases about new treatments or new drugs that you can leave the rock behind. Treatment-resistant depression is a cruel lot. You see so many others being helped by meds that barely keep your depression in check. Yet, you still must keep functioning because you don't want to give up-- you want a fulfilling life. Going on disability seems like giving up. But whatever you touch somehow gets tainted. You are late to work even though your work can be outstanding. Relationships with intimates falter, people pull away. There is a pain that if you acknowledge it, will cause you to scream and...

I passed a soldier stationed with a machine gun while changing planes in SLC once (a few months after 9/11). It's the only time I've ever seen it in the USA, but it does happen.
- Matt Mastracci
What would a machine gun protect you from other then people parking in the white zones too long?
- Uncle CW™
Until you are required to wear only a TSA Approved jumpsuit (nothing else) when flying, no amount of guidelines will keep you totally safe. Smoke and Mirrors. Everyone knows it. But a placebo does do wonders sometimes.
- Uncle CW™
Um, they had soldiers with machine guns in National while I lived in the DC area. I don't know if they stood them down after I left, but they were there in 2001-02. I didn't feel safer.
- Jennifer Dittrich
I think we need to start accepting, at least the international terminals, as contested borders and accept the controls traditional with transiting through such a zone.

It was a close one, folks! My brother and I were tied at 4 wedges (we call them nibblets, I don't know why) and my mom only had one (she had answered a question about a city in Ohio with "Indianapolis" - my brother and I were thinking it was time to commit her to an old person's home) and then my mom came back with an astonishing run. The answer that I won with: Who did George Bush call...

What about "hey baby girl", I hear they like that one.
- Jesse Hattabaugh
There's nothing more demeaning to females than being called "baby mama." I hate it when things like that get accepted into the vernacular as being either funny, or cool. Hell, it's even considered 'respectful' by some. But what's the truth here? Bottom line is, a guy is basically saying to a girl that he looks at her as someone he wishes to impregnate. Yeah, that's real classy.
- Fleagle
I thought "baby mama" was for a woman you had *already* impregnated but to whom you were not married. I've never heard it used in the way you describe. See also: "baby daddy"
- Brad Greer
No. Not at all. I've heard guys say that to girls they're hitting on. As if that's going to do the trick.
- Fleagle
I challenge anyone to find a more compact way then "baby momma" to describe someone you've impregnated, but are otherwise not involved with. LOL.

Attention women. Men really hate it when you call them Champ. :-)
- Eric Booth
ok, duly noted. is it cool if we smile and say 'hello' or 'hi' as we pass by?
- Morgan Haley
@Rahsheen, I don't suppose you read my response?
- Fleagle
i do this too, except its in a salon and cost $70
- sean percival
I do this for myself, once a month, in front of the mirror. it comes out so great that people often ask me "where do you go to take an haircut?". I usually say: "I am the only customer of my barber ;-)"
- Tzury Bar Yochay
Tzury, how do you know they aren't asking to avoid going there? ;)
- Cristo
Interesting. You look 20 years younger here than your Friendfeed avatar.. :)

I cut my own too, not that you could tell.
- JSLeFanu
I just noticed that my 8-month-old has the same haircut!
- Gabe
Sometimes I cut Ken's hair, fun times indeed. He has to do everything I tell him or else! haha!
- Susan Beebe
I think I have those same clippers. Using them with no guard buys quite a bit of time.
- metalerik
You are a smart fellow Paul, that's probably why you are a millionaire. I am not sure why anyone goes to the barber any more. $ 50.00 and a couple of hours is not worth the trouble. One trip to the barber costs as much as a new Shaver or Hair Trimmer. I have been cutting my own hair for over a decade, though recently my sweetheart has been cutting it and she does an amazing job in about half an hour.
- Iggy Mwangi
Have no idea why haircut is so damn expensive in the US, it is so cheap in China.

"Brand new from Converse Japan are these Jack Purcells. Paradoxically capturing both a more formal and a casual aesthetic the shoes appear to be a refined, more sophisticated version of the iconic chuck taylor boot. Stand out features include the stretchy-rubber on the sides of the shoe, allowing for ease of movement, as well as the prominent heel tab and cylindrical laces to match the boot. The shoes will drop at around $90 and will be available imminently in either black or white."

"On this day in 1941, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were taken out of their exhibit cases at the Library of Congress, carefully wrapped in acid-free and neutral packing materials, and placed inside a bronze container designed especially to carry them. When the packing was complete, the “top of the container was screwed tight over a cork gasket and locked with padlocks on each side.” ... Along with other important documents like the Magna Carta and the Articles of Confederation, the Declaration and the Constitution were then taken to Union Station in an “armed and escorted truck,” where they were loaded into a compartment in a Pullman car on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Accompanying the documents were Chief Assistant Librarian Verner W. Clapp and some number of armed Secret Service agents. The documents left D.C. in the evening and arrived in Louisville the next morning, where they were “met by four more Secret Service agents and a troop of the Thirteenth...

"And yet perhaps the greatest threats the documents have faced as documents have come not from their enemies but from their friends.
