Grayson Perry: Who Are You?, National Portrait Gallery - exhibition review - London Evening Standard
"Grayson Perry's in uncharted territory for artists. Plenty have been media stars, but none have managed to get under the skin of British culture on TV, as Perry does so intelligently in the Channel 4 series about identity that this show accompanies, reviewed by Alastair McKay (right). It documents the 14 portraits — in the loosest sense — that Perry’s made of mainly ordinary Britons, but also the disgraced politician Chris Huhne and reality TV star Rylan Clark. All 14 portraits has been put on show among the NPG’s collection. Perry’s documentary making is certainly affecting his art — and sometimes for the worse. The biggest development has been his use of tapestry. An enormous one, Comfort Blanket, is at the top of the NPG stairs — a vast embroidered banknote, a portrait of Britain with a grinning head of the Queen, teeming with British references and values from Dad’s Army to “fair play”. It’s rollickingly entertaining and funny. But visually, it’s a bit hideous. More on Grayson... more... - Spidra Webster from Bookmarklet

In 1764 a porcelain factory was started in Fulda under Prince-Bishop, Prince-Abbot Heinrich von Bibra, but shortly after his death it was closed down in 1789 by his successor, Prince-Bishop, Prince-Abbot Adalbert von Harstall. Because of its quality and rarity, this porcelain is much prized by collectors. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... - Halil from Bookmarklet

MoMA | Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs
In the late 1940s, Henri Matisse turned almost exclusively to cut paper as his primary medium, and scissors as his chief implement, introducing a radically new operation that came to be called a cut-out. Matisse would cut painted sheets into forms of varying shapes and sizes—from the vegetal to the abstract—which he then arranged into lively compositions, striking for their play with color and contrast, their exploitation of decorative strategies, and their economy of means. Initially, these compositions were of modest size but, over time, their scale grew along with Matisse’s ambitions for them, expanding into mural or room-size works. A brilliant final chapter in Matisse’s long career, the cut-outs reflect both a renewed commitment to form and color and an inventiveness directed to the status of the work of art, whether as a unique object, environment, ornament, or a hybrid of all of these. Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs is a groundbreaking reassessment of this important body of work. - Hami from Bookmarklet

Barbie as goddess Kali angers Hindus : World, News - India Today
"Barbie takes a Kali avatar as Argentine artists Marianela Perelli and Pool Paolini, in an exhibition series called "Barbie - The Plastic Religion," are featuring a Kali version of this popular doll range. In the exhibition in Buenos Aires, which is set to open on October 11, the artists will present various avatars of Barbie, and her male companion Ken. A photograph of the "Kali-Barbie" on the artists' website shows this doll holding up a severed head and the toy box has a symbol of Om and "Jai Kali Ma" in Hindi printed on it. However, according to reports, this Barbie Kali has generated furore. Rajan Zed, a notable interfaith leader who has led a prayer in the US Senate said, "Hindus welcome the art world to immerse in Hinduism but taking it seriously and respectfully and not for refashioning Hinduism concepts and symbols for personal agendas. Barbie-fication of Kali is simply improper, wrong and out of place." The depiction of Barbie and Ken as the Virgin Mary and a crucified Jesus Christ and other saints also drew sharp comments." - Spidra Webster from Bookmarklet

"I was fortunate to be able to preserve a small collection of some of the artwork used to create the covers of Mastertronic computer games. They were painted onto board and then photographed to form the backing artwork on top of which were overlaid the company logo and graphics for the game title and details. In our early days the artwork was framed and kept in our offices - later on as the pictures piled up they were slung in a cupboard and forgotten. I took them before they went in the skip when our offices moved." - Mark H from Bookmarklet

Lydia Nikolayevna Delektorskaya (1910-1998) was Matisse’s model, his secretary and friend. She appears on many canvases and in many of his drawings. Beginning in 1967, she donated to the Hermitage drawings, sculptures and also books which were designed and illustrated by Matisse. The latter were art books that were published in very small print runs, sometimes as few as 5 copies.... more... - Ksana
