Sorry, but I can't agree with you. I use myspace as a band/musician, and I do it because while it is quite bad as a platform, the community that floats around it is big and useful. Make everyone swap to somewhere else and I'll go. As it is, I am at myspace specially because I *have* to be there. I could sat that failing to realize that, you look like you don't know what you're saying ;-)

There are many other platforms which support vast music communities. Last.fm, thesixtyone.com, the list goes on. Promoting music has very little to do with infiltrating social networks where 'everyone' is.

They serve different purposes. MySpace is more useful to me than Last.fm for non-fans relationship (labels, other artists, promoters, venues), even if I prefer and actually use more Last.fm. It's just a question of "scale", and "who's where", not a platform issue. Nowadays even if I don't do nothing I'll get introduced to new contacts on MySpace at a rate of more or less 10 per week....

My friends band not only found their singer via Myspace but got booked for a 3 show gig at a local pub. Just because you are on the cutting edge doesn't mean everyone else is. In Australia, we don't have access to a lot of services. Casting broad assumptions with possibly unintentional backhands makes YOU look like you don't know what you're doing :)

I had been making the mistake of dis-regarding myspace when it comes to music and bands. I was wrong. For that it is a good platform, due to its widespread adoption and portabilty. Case in point. HoneyHoney. :-)

do you have any facts or testimonies to back ou that argument? Because I'm not the only one *feeling* that there are important connections *on* MySpace...
- Marcos Marado
I think it's only important in so much as MySpace is where the masses are. The musicians I know who are supporting themselves off of their art are not using MySpace. On the business side of things (A&R/booking/etc), they only listen to music on MySpace if there is no other alternative offered, and it often ends in a bad experience (auto-play, multiple-songs playing, visual obnoxiousness, spam, obtrusive advertising from MS, etc).

Same here...within the last few days I've had a steady stream of subscribers...I had gone months without any...
- Artists House Music
I have not been working on building friendfeed but have been getting emails of about 20 a day over the last 3 days saying that people are subscribing to my feed.

Interesting. I am starting to think that it is a bit of a step up from twitter
