Certainly, when the website gets translated to HTML/CSS and sliced up, you optimize pieces depending on content type (jpg, png)...

FYI JPGs are 3x 4x heavier (bytes) than PNG plus you get compression artifacts. No reason to use JPGs for final design comps #rant
