Media representation is the precursor to historical representation. It's one thing to grow up knowing people like you are represented in historical accounts but not giving a shit, versus growing up thinking that either (1) no one like you ever existed before or (2) people like you are so unimportant no one even bothered writing down what happened.
True, but some groups' retroactive adoption of historical figures on no clear evidence of how those figures identified bothers me about as much as the Mormons' posthumous conversions. - DJF
Well, when there's nothing, you have to start somewhere. And the identification doesn't have to be perfect. And as far as I can tell, most people seem to take the dominant narrative that becomes enshrined as national mythology at face value anyway. The extent of the retconning that happens when a minority community coheres isn't really that different. - Victor Ganata
