Gluten is not necessarily poisonous to everyone. Agriculture has been around long enough that a lot of people have developed tolerance, the same way a lot of people have developed continuous tolerance of lactose after animal husbandry was established. That's really the distinction that I feel a lot of pro-paleo/anti-gluten evangelists never mention. It works for some people. It doesn't work for everyone. The trick is in figuring out for whom.

Thanks for sharing this. My mother died at 66, having suffered for years with autoimmune disorders and other ailments. Since befriending someone with celiac disease, finding out more about the disease and gluten intolerance, and making my own attempts to become 100% gluten free, I have reason to believe she was an undiagnosed celiac. I now tell everyone I know who's struggling with health issues similar to my mother's that they need to get tested or at least go gluten-free for a couple of weeks and see how they feel.

the real story here is the disempowerment of women in the health care system.

It's easy enough now to avoid gluten and do a self 6 month test to see if it helps, it doesn't hurt.
