Sean, if only I knew. This was delivered directly to me fresh and hot.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Wow, whatever you do, don't google "Asian guys at beach licking" if you want to find the Flickr account for this. No, seriously. Just...don't. o.O
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
changed my life forever...I will always go to the beach with a a few chubby buddies after porking myself up for those bosoms ~ and this image is most definitely going in the ol' spank bank
- sofarsoShawn
Remember ! I bring quality product to Friend Feed !:)
- Akiva Moskovitz
you know what would be funny: ok bear with me, if we blindfolded leather donut (you know the booby man) and...yeah fill in the blanks...something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- sofarsoShawn
Sir, randomly linking to your FriendFeed from one of my posts is oh wait you'll never see this because you're blocked for spamming. Thanks anyway, kaghazrangy.
- Akiva Moskovitz
damn this picture just won't go away - you have forced me to hide it
- William Harryman
Akiva, wasn't that pic taken at your last BBQ?
- Paul
Every time I see this picture I smile. Their joy is infectious, like herpes.
- Sparky
Paul, I surely do wish I had a beach in my back yard!
- Akiva Moskovitz
Sparky, I'm going to have this blown up to poster-size and attaching it to the ceiling above our bed. That'll cause some infections!
- Akiva Moskovitz
makes me want to grow a rack and diddle with my own, know what I'm saying?
- sofarsoShawn
this. . . .this. . . ugh . . . so fucking wrong.
- Peter Ghosh
Akiva - you can put anything you want above our bed.
- Sparky
i've been trying to formulate a comment for this for days, but i just...can't.
- joey
I still want to know the motivation here. is this a gay marriage argument? or are we already pushing group social contracts on friendfeed?
- Noah David Simon
oh man this one keeps popping up on ma friendfeed,....must spread virus nao
- Chris Hofmann
I'm surprised no one's noticed old boy's red-framed glasses.
- Akiva Moskovitz
oh right... the glasses are so important when three asian men are licking his nipples and all the comments are by people who think gay marriage has something to do with equality... when it has everything to do with taking protections away from children. the red glass glasses.... um yeah. chicken and Oklahoma with milk
- Noah David Simon
Mark, you have uncovered the dark underbelly of humanity except in this case it isn't dark but is rather a pasty hue somewhere in the vicinity of undercooked flan.
- Akiva Moskovitz
This should be in the default noobie FF stream. Like the first thing anyone who signs up sees. If they stick around they're part of the family.
- Chrimmus Tad
Perhaps this can replace the kitty pic on the start page for non-members!
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
I'm certain prop8 had nothing to do with Swine Flu
- Noah David Simon
I'm thinking that eventually, it will have been hidden by every user on FriendFeed. It'll be the most hidden post in FriendFeed history.

I look at it and think, "Not again."

Just about the time you FF is getting some class .. Oh well we is what we is.
- Brent - Loving Life
I can't believe after all this time some diligent FF'er hasn't dug up the identities (I said "titties") of this bunch and invited them to join the service that made them famous. Mitchell Tsai, get to work!
- Sprague D
i think if you unlike and delete all your comments anna it'll go away, but hide in general would be nice too (this photo makes me smile every time it pops up so don't mind it)...
- mike "glemak" dunn
*sigh* This is never going away, is it? It's gonna end up like James Bond movies and Swedish meatballs - always existing in the same form. never diminshing, never forgotten. :( :( :(
- Steven Perez
from IM
It will go away, to be replaced with photoshops of the original. It's all part of the meme lifecycle.
- Sparky
I am too new on friendfeed to know anything about record comments.. I love gmail tho, puts all the comments in one threaded email and I can delete them all later in one shot or not if I choose..
- David Gross

well we should aim to beat the record.. i mean jeez there are tons of things that could be said about this.. like.. does it taste like chicken?
- ed fry
I'm gonna have nightmares now. thanks ed. ;)

ok, in Japanese: "an, an, soko dame!"
- Rick Cogley
You can't close this thread. A lot of people say that this place is a Scoble-fest but, truly, it is this thread that is at the very heart of FriendFeed.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I'm officially going to proclaim that this is the FF equivalent of Goatse or FFoatse if you will. Lets all refer to it as that from this point forward.
- Mark Krynsky
Sparky has left 57 comments. The rest of you are slacking. Hop to it!
- Christopher Harley
Chrisitan just walked by and said "It's too early in the morning for Japanese titty licking." It's NEVER too early for Japanese titty licking.
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
THIS is the first thing I see here this morning?
- l0ckergn0me
Chris, you just woke up? C'mon, man! It's 10:30!
- Akiva Moskovitz
I knew he would break eventually - it's fitting that it's on this thread *now to find out how to hide a thread once you've commented....*
- WorldofHiglet
As much as I am loathe to bump this post, I have to do it to say, You, sir, are a master. Well played, sir. Well played. This is why I take every opportunity to say, in my next life, I want to be Akiva. I've already called it! Don't anybody go getting any more ideas.
- ♥patricia♥
I, for one, refuse to "bump" posts...it's very unseemly...
- Live4Emma (L4S)
I wish FF-search allowed to do GROUP BY -aggregations so I could COUNT(*) who are the biggest *bump*ers. :)
- Jemm
Makes me laugh everytime I see it. Such a happy yet silly scene by the sea.
- Toby Graham
There is nothing silly about it. This is serious business.
- Sparky
The more I see this, the more I like it. Not for the ironic nipple-licking, but because these kids are genuinely enjoying themselves. :) Carry on.
- felicious
This photo looks so much better in iPhone 3.0!#!~
- Akiva Moskovitz
Seriously dude. What do I have to do to get rid of this disgusting picture!? Doh! Now I've just pushed it back to the top... yuck, I'm so sickened.

Can't believe I never hit 'like' on this! Consider the situation rectumfied.
- Bec Rowe @d0tski
Oops! I hope I didn't just bump this up again... ;-)
- Sprague D
It's just so refreshing to see genuine juvenile humour at work. These kids are no different from any other, I think it's a great happy image, given all the other shite happening in this world on a daily basis. For those that are too pompous and prudish, 'up yours with brass knobs'
- ImJustCreative
Wow. 666. Nice! Actually, the reason Asashoryu is getting a divorce ( http://ff.im/4T0UA ), is because he wants to spend time with this lot.

To this day, the pic still comes back. Just like Herpes. :D
- Danny Minick
Although unlike herpes this photo is fun to share with friends.

You know, every time this pops up, since FF hides the middle of the comments of which there are 804 or so, I see Akiva say "I'm sorry." at the top. It makes me wonder about how some things are just not possible to apologize for!

the thing that strikes me about this (aside from the obvious) is after seeing this thing pop up like 35-40 times since March its just occurred to me that I don't have any (guy) friends that a) would lick my nipples b) would lick my nipples for a photograph. Maybe I should get out more...
- J. Abdul-Qahhar
I'm a little scared that I've this has gotten more than 800 comments and almost 200 likes over nearly five months and I still haven't clicked "Hide."
- Scott of Two Countries
It's just a bit of fun. I mean watching how many comment, not the picture content (although I suspect that is all that was too!)
- Ian May
Allright, you guys ready to shoot "mirth and girth"?
- Rick Cogley
For the life of me, I'll never understand the emotion people have around this picture for or against. There's no nudity at all, not even implied nudity. Less dude nudity than a beer commercial or cigarette ad, yet there are people who really really really hate this picture.
- Matthew DeVries
I found a way to get a Tit Theme, and it involves this picture.

- Mark "DerBingle" J
Hmmm, where do you think they're from? My guess is Japan...
- sofarsoShawn
The bumping algorithm includes things like novel people posting to it, in addition to thread age, and rapidity of comments. If the same 3 people are talking in a thread, it quits bumping because it's obviously a closed tea party.
- Matthew DeVries
I forgot, also you're a very handsome guy(saw the wedding images), I don't understand why you don't like to share your face. Rochelle is a lucky lady.

Jimminy, it's an irrational phobia. No different than people who are afraid of heights, spiders, clowns, or Canada.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva, now I'm LMAO at the fear of Canada. People are actually afraid of Canada, or just the fact they don't know if they're British or French?
- Jimminy Fuller
I don't think even Canadians know that difference.

On Fark, there was this one thread, that just kept growing and growing. On Fark, it was a single page per thread. And you could post images and gif inline. Well the thread wouldn't die, people just kept posting. I forget which one it was. Anyway, it got so monsterous, that few people going to read/post to it per day (which was only a handfull) accounted for 1/3 of the server load of the site. They eventually had to cull that thread.
- Matthew DeVries
I think everyone who has participated in this thread has 'culled' themselves privately.

I really love following Joe Hewitt (http://friendfeed.com/joehewi...) discuss developing the Facebook iPhone app so openly on Facebook, Twitter, and FriendFeed (and open sourcing most of it at the same time). Sets a really high standard for transparency in product development. I hope more companies follow his example.
Bret, the gang at FriendFeed do a good job as well. After consistently banging my head against Google's "Wall of Silence" the content here is incredibly refreshing. Thanks!!
- Chris Myles
This is what I exactly want to do. But, usually the next release is a top secret for many of the companies and it's very stressful to write even the concepts you are working on.
- Burcu Dogan
I think most people would prefer to work this way, but it is worth noting how difficult that can be at a large, well-known company: individuals, the press and Wall St are trying to read something into every little thing you say or do, there are SEC rules to worry about, and so forth. I feel lucky that I work mostly on open source stuff at Google, so this doesn't affect me most of the time.
- Joel Webber
Joel, I do understand the bigger issues at Google, I'm referring more to the product and support side. I've been getting some VERY bad vibes from other users and developers in the forums for Blogger, GFC, Picasa, Maps etc and their APIs. I've actually had people tell me to stop asking questions about GFC because no one from Google responds. Here I get the exact opposite feeling, from...
- Chris Myles
chrismyles: some of the issues are cultural and others are technical. google support discussions used to be mailing lists, and wading through so many messages is time consuming. since moving to their forum system, the level of responses have improved somewhat and it seems the staff is better able to pick out topics to reply. the friendfeed platform is even better, and allows topics the community thinks are important to receive a higher priority.
- Mike Chelen
from IM
Mike, I guess we'll have to see.. What I love about FF is it makes it easier for ME to keep track of all my discussions in a single spot. Google's new support discussions require me to visit each group independently; there is no central location where I can monitor all my questions. It might be easier for Google but it's harder for me.. If only they all used friendfeed!!
- Chris Myles
So Bret, what do you think of the resulting app? Now you've got even more reasons to be interested!!
- Chris Myles
Chris: indeed those are the sort of technical or design capabilities that can restrict or enhance the effectiveness for users of a platform. both google and friendfeed have dedicated and skilled staff, yet here they are more able to communicate efficiently with relatively greater numbers of people.
- Mike Chelen
FriendFeed has been almost completely blocked in Iran as far as we can tell. We have a large number of very active Iranian users, and we noticed a steep decline in activity yesterday. Graph below.
این نمودار نشاندهنده افت فرندفید به دلیل بسته شدن آن در ایران است
- Mycaptain
Bret: Is this based on IP numbers located in Iran, or actual activity from those users? If it's IP based, it'd be interesting to see the activity on a user basis and see if they've been able to route around the blocking.
- Ken Sheppardson
If Twitter were blocked and FriendFeed weren't, I'd expect an uptick in FriendFeed activity, not a 92% drop.
- Kevin Fox
I.e. given all the users who've previously accessed the site from an Iran IP number, how many have been active from different numbers in the past 2 days.
- Ken Sheppardson
Instead of "liking" this, shouldn't we have an "unlike" button?
- Steven Melfi
:( Bret: According to Stephen fry, these are the iran proxies: 218.128.112.18:8080 218.206.94.132:808 218.253.65.99:808 219.50.16.70:8080 . Can you track these IPs?
- Roberto Bonini
I knew this day was coming. Too bad.
- Robert Scoble
Steven - same feeling here. I always feel weird "liking" bad stories on FF
- Mike Bracco
How does traffic from China look? Or North Korea?
- τorƍue
like for spread but not like for the situation
- Imprenditore
I wonder what the international community can do about stuff like this. Eventually the "bad guys" will lose.
- Michiel Sikkes
Hopefully, we'll never see a graph like this for Turkey...
- Onur Şentüre
that's because the government has blocked access to friendfeed, twitter, facebook, youtube and ... after election and after protests in Iran cities !
- Farshad
Man... :( That's really a corrupt government. Hope it gets better soon.
- Peter
Kheyzaran mentioned over the weekend that both Twitter and FF were blocked for Iran starting I believe on Friday. He is using a proxy when possible to keep us updated
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Bret, any analysis about how many people unable to access FF directly are still able to access it via proxy?
- Daniel Dulitz
Daniel: Well, we are still getting a bunch of Farsi comments and posts. They may be Persians from outside Iran or from Iranians using proxies. We don't have a detailed analysis breaking those down at this point.
- Bret Taylor
Watching the "guerrilla cyberwarfare" aspect of the elections and reactions has been fascinating. Iran's universities are obviously full of resourceful, passionate geeks.
- John Craft
this is really bad. i hope there's some resolution to this. the people or iran have shown a lot of strength and courage to protest the illegitimacy of recent events. i don't think this will stop things
- Cee Bee
Is it possible that the same folks from Iran that are active on Friendfeed are the ones out protesting?
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
please help us , we are under attack ,change friendfeed logo if you can
- فرزاد
make a room for us, invite your friends we will fill it with latest news
- Farshad
I'm completely for having a fair vote, but I'm not sure that I'd want to try and align FriendFeed with a particular candidate, which is what a green logo would imply.
- Kevin Fox
Many iranians using proxies to access FF. and therefore their IPs changes to fake IP .
- آدمیرال
MohammadReza: Maryam's mom is still able to call her relatives and friends in Tehran, so they are keeping some voice traffic open, if not all.
- Robert Scoble
@Kevin, totally understandable.
- EricaJoy
from IM
If Iran thinks they have nothing to fear, then why block Friendfeed?
- Frode Stenstrøm
Frode: because the government is like China: they believe that by retarding the flow of information they will reduce the threat of protests and governmental overthrow.
- Robert Scoble
Very reminiscent of the prelude to the fall of the Shah
- Alan Morris
I don't speak Persian, so I don't know all the searches, but there are still (luckily) a lot of Persian users posting: http://friendfeed.com/search.... If you are Persian and looking for updates, try our search engine to find the few users who still have access.
- Bret Taylor
Frode: and in Iran's case, they are run by conservative religious authorities and they don't like the fact that they are not in control of information flow like they used to be. They like to think they can still control information sources and, since they can't, they try to block places where their citizens can go to share information.
- Robert Scoble
is it a joke? iranian users seems the %90 of friend feed. it could not be real!
- Fırat DEMİREL
Firat: There are no units on the vertical axis of the chart.
- Ken Sheppardson
Firat: This is a chart of traffic from Iran, not of FF's total traffic.
- Kevin Fox
Firat, i doubt that this graph is a percentage graph... probably more likely that it's measuring hits, sessions, or total data transfered (mb, kb, etc)
- Chris Heath
Kevin: what impact did this have on FF's overall traffic?
- Robert Scoble
Robert: Iran is the #6 country for FriendFeed in terms of page views per day.
- Bret Taylor
Thanks all for answers. i told that it could not be real.. :) excuse me, i ve just read Bret's notice and looked at breaking point. i saw what i've missed before.. bad news for ff and iran.. :(
- Fırat DEMİREL
These statistics are incredible, especially the normally heavy useage of FF in Iran.
- Curt Mercadante
Bret Taylor, we can tag our pix and vids about iran election by an english keyword such as 'iran' or 'iranelection'. I think it will help to ff non-persian users to find out more about unrests in iran.
- آدمیرال
Iran restored cell phone service Sunday that had been down in the capital since Saturday. But Iranians still could not send text messages from their mobile phones, and the government increased its Internet filtering in an apparent attempt to undercut opposition voices. Social networking sites including Facebook and Twitter were also not working.
- Üstün Üzüm
martin: those words are not mine actually from a news article from washinton post.
- Üstün Üzüm
On twitter people are retweeting the IPs and ports of unblocked proxies, can we do something like that here?
- Canageek
martin, i'm from iran. twitter is blocked. what evidence you wanna? screenshot!?
- آدمیرال
yes Canageek. we use proxies for tweeting
- آدمیرال
Authorities blocking the internet are just reinforcing solidarity between people, can't they understand ?
- Stanislas Jourdan
Stanislas: not to mention they encourage their smartest and richest people to leave (the ones who have technical skills). There's a reason why Silicon Valley has 10,000 or more Iranians living here. Their government sucks and the people are getting tired of it. Of course if their government was great I would never have met my wife (who grew up in Tehran). So, there is good to come out of a crappy government! :-)
- Robert Scoble
it has always seemed to me that the iranian user base is ENORMOUS here. wow. unbelievable.
- edythe
It is interesting how much civil unrest that is brewing across the globe towards their governments. The knee jerk reactions in attempting to block certain websites shows how much they didn't expect the net to become such a widespread conduit for cutting through the bs and informing those that wish to know. I wish those who take a stand all the best.
- alphaxion
Another way for those that are in Iran is to access through Netvibes (but I don't know if it works or if it's blocked too), adding Friendfeed, Gmail and so on such as modules
- Roberto
Thanks for sharing this, Bret. It's valuable evidence of what's going on, evidence which wouldn't have been available even a few years ago.
- Michael Nielsen
Very interesting...so much for democracy and voting rights in Iran...
- freedom fighter mom
If anybody in Iran feels up to it, can you temporarily disable your proxy and run a traceroute to friendfeed.com and twitter.com then post the results here?
- EricaJoy
Bret and Paul, can you let us know if the traffic comes back, which would tell us they've unblocked FriendFeed?

The coversations and comments here are educational.

Good luck to all of you trying to get around the censorship. I hope the big sites are doing what they can to help out.

Looking at the potential of this event in the future for numerous causes is mind-boggling. Really amazing.

Come to think of it, does FF have a presence in China? I'd imagine it's blocked there. I've seen Chinese on here, but never sure if that's from China or speakers outside.
- anna sauce
Yes, Friendfeed is blocked in Iran. Right now the papers and TV channels here are controlled by the government and our access to satellite channels is blocked too. Friendfeed and Twitter are quite vital for us now. Our main source of exchanging information and news is Friendfeed. Via Friendfeed we let everyone know that where people need help and where to go and how to help them and...

- Selma
Nope, they have blocked all https addresses, we have had to sign in to Friendfeed via anti-filters for the past few months.
- Selma
its a shame. it was one the main media we used to inform ppl. thats why they filtered it. now many users cant sign in
- Myri∂m
Can't we "help" in some way? Providing proxies, I don't know, the kind of stuff pirates do. Pirates, and people trying to make a Revolution happen....

It may not be long before Turkey joins the party.

I just spoke with my friend Andres, the main BBC correspondent for the Middle East/Afghanistan, and he mentioned the web is being fire walled in Iran much the same as the the "Great Firewall" during last year's Olympics in China.
- sofarsoShawn
The Iranian websites that people used to exchange information about the election protests in Iran are under cyber-attacks by the government forces and from anonymous sources. Many of them are down right now. These Iranian websites were our few last remaining channels to inform people. What can we do about that? Is there anyone out there who can help us with this?
- emin
i was 53rd active user in friendfeed until this filtering. now i can open FF with proxies and if i can fine. a Vpn but many Vpn here come from companies that have relations with security services, i thunk they allow us to bypass filternig and then, they will arrest who has wrote against their goals
- خیزران kheyzaran
Can't we transfer the data/databases of the sites you, iranian guys, use to any new domain we could buy? I want to help. Not by throwing rocks to "security service" forces, but, at least, by making possible for what YOU have to say to go public, worldwide.
- Zackatoustra
FF is a useful website for Iranian People to get reliable information about demonstration against presidential election.

Selma: 1- I don't use a proxy but clearing all but one (deleting them all logs me out) instance of each friendfeed.com cookie name and refreshing the page always solves this for me in Firefox. Has never happened on Lunascape or IE. Good luck.

The reason I ask is because if you can email a post, then try sending it to share@friendfeed and also to YourUserName@friendfeed. Then when someone comments you'll receive an email about it and you can comment back to the thread via email as well.

Perhaps you've noticed that apps aren't exactly flying off the virtual shelves in BlackBerry's App World store, like they are in Apple's App Store. The store is hard to navigate and there's confusion about several of the apps, are the main complaints we're hearing (along with memory issues). And RIM hopes to alleviate some of those problems with the launch of its own social network for BlackBerry users tomorrow, we're told. The network, called MyBlackBerry, gives device owners a social profile where they can share opinions on their favorite apps, accessories as well as tips and tricks they use on their devices. More importantly, they can also vent about all of these things with fellow users, and RIM will be there to listen. The whole thing looks more like a bulletin board than what you might consider to be a traditional social network nowadays, but that's probably a good idea to streamline it and make it all about information.
Good for her. For moms deciding whether to nurse in public, please note it doesn't require showing as much as in these photos.
- Bruce Lewis
Bruce, and for those who are more shy or modest, there are plenty of attractive coverups available.
- Rochelle
Is it mostly in the US that the general public seems freaked-out by bare female breasts (in just about any context)?
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
keep em coming. the more normal and everyday (esp Americans) view kids at the breast in normal, everyday places the faster peeps will get over it being anything other than cool and healthy.
- Thom Kennon
well i can say from experience they are equally prudish re this in the UK & Ireland. My wife's nursed our 5 kids in public and private, in the US, UK, Eire and France... US and UK definitely equally uptight, sample of 7.
- Thom Kennon
My thought is, of the different Gawker blogs available, shouldn't Jezebel be covering this as well? Their average commenters are better qualified to talk about this situation, IMO.
- Kamilah Gill
Thanks, Thom! I knew someone would have more insight.
- Rochelle
My wife says, wait... "we already went through that controversy". Yup 2007 photos.
- Louis Gray
I always wanted someone to try and give me grief for nursing in public so I could tell them to F-off, but it never happened. Which is probably a good thing.
- Mellissa Claus
Well to answer my own question, nothing, obviously. What's all the fuss!
- Kevin J Hatton
Point of order: Not everyone in UK/Ireland is 'Prudish'. Ok not an everyday occurrence but there is nowhere near the fuss this side of the water than appears to have been the case in US. I think it is good to 'raise awareness' perhaps it might just catch on! After all the health benefits for children are very substantial, so it makes perfect sense to promote breast feeding.
- Kevin J Hatton
Kevin, I find that interesting because breastfeeding rates in the UK are so low. "35 per cent of UK babies are being exclusively breastfed at one week, 21 per cent at six weeks, 7 per cent at four months and 3 per cent at five months." (Source: http://www.babyfriendly.org.uk/page...)
- Rochelle
As compared to the US: "Among children born in 2005, 74% initiated breastfeeding, whereas 43% were breastfeeding at 6 months and 21% at 12 months of age. Approximately 32% of infants born in 2005 were exclusively breastfed through 3 months of age, and 12% were exclusively breastfed for 6 months." (Source: http://www.cdc.gov/breastf...)
- Rochelle
I remember a certain period in Munich, Germany, where I lived, Mom's invading Starbucks-Shops and getting thrills out of breast-feeding in front of all. I look the other way and don't care. If you've been around the world public bf is nothing unusual.
- Alex 'BuckyBit' Covic
Interesting stats, which obviously shows that the take up rate should be higher and the government and the NHS should do more to help.
- Kevin J Hatton
What Alex said. Was on S-Bahn in Munich recently, and a woman on the train saw nothing of prepping her self for breastfeeding her child. She did her best to cover up, but noone batted an eye when she did it. I wish Americans had more of this attitude, rather than freaking out when a celebrity does it.
- Helen Sventitsky
Alex, I doubt they were "getting thrills". More like promoting the concept of it and trying to make it more acceptable.
- Rochelle
Better hide before NSFW Thought Police come out from under their rocks! LOL
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
There is a fuss about it only because the U.S is so conservative (Well, the U.S and Muslim countries), it's perfectly reasonable to breastfeed in public anywhere else around the world.
- Amit Morson
I've done it- with more modesty. No one really knew or cared. One of Mr.Ks friends freaked out, but he didn't even know until we said something about waiting until baby was done. They have the problem. For moms it's super easy!
- R1CC1
Well pretty soon America will be a country of artificial insemination and test tube babies. I would not be surprised if Sex is made illegal, or one must have a license to have Sex only as a method of procreation. Why people are so hung up over Sexuality? We should be proud of our bodies!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Breastfeeding isn't really sexual at all. It's providing food for a baby. Breast are multi-purpose.
- Rochelle
And that's what magnifies the absurdity of fussing over breastfeeding.
- Amit Morson
Rochelle, yes and no. I am talking as a man, but I believe a woman is not just providing food, which can be done via a bottle, but providing love to the baby. The woman also is providing satisfaction to herself. These things are part of human sexuality. Sexuality comes in different forms. There is also intellectual form!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
"The woman also is providing satisfaction to herself." <-- How so?
- Rochelle
Igor, the satisfaction that comes with bonding is nothing like sexual satisfaction.
- Amit Morson
I believe so, although I never breast fed a baby! ;-) From your experience you do not think so? But I am more talking Spiritual Sexuality, than a lust act of sex.
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Are there people actively preventing women from breastfeeding in public? I mean, you did just whip out your breast, which does in fact have sexual connotations to many. It doesn't matter that you did it to feed your baby. It's still a boob. At any rate, I'm not sure what the discussion is here. Who cares what people think about it?
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Rahsheen, woman were asked to leave restaurants, shops and other places because of breastfeeding. I remember a case in which police was called to a public park.
- Amit Morson
haha.. my wife just whips out her boob wherever she is. +1 what Amit said about conservative U.S. But generally people seem pretty cool about it. She does however get more looks in NY than she does in AZ. Lighten up people, baby's eating, it ain't no sex show.
- Aviv
Good quote "it ain't no sex show" @ Aviv
- Kevin J Hatton
Rahsheen, many states are now making laws making it illegal for women be harassed and kicked out of public places, but yes, it has and does still happen. The opponents of it usually try to claim that it's indecent exposure.
- Rochelle
Rochelle, I guess what I meant to say, if people where comfortable with their Sexuality, they would not interpret, "baby's eating, is a sex show" Too much ultra conservative values around!.
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
@Igor I agree. The USA is very ultra-conservative, sensitive, and trying to be politically correct. This is why breastfeeding is seen as more than a mother feeding her child.
- Shevonne
You know what irks me even more? The ones who have more of an issue with this are other women! I think you might be on to something. It could partially be jealousy. This is from my friends' and my own experiences.
- Shevonne
Nice to have women and men talk about this issue on the open. This is how you break barriers! Open Minds!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Most women I know absolutely refuse to breastfeed, but have no problems with it either way. They just aren't comfortable with doing it. Probably because they didn't grow up with it being the norm. If a woman is somewhat discreet about it in a public place, I don't see where anyone has a reason to complain.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Maggie G, nursing in public, Not really news. Maggie G nursing a 25 year old man in public. That would be news :D
- Moved to Facebook
Earl does have a point. :) Sadly, some people can't see the clear distinction between the two.
- Aviv
@Rah You're right. I always put a blanket or had a snuggie to breastfeed in public, but there are other women who won't even breastfeed like that. However, I don't think that they should make it hard for women who do want to breastfeed.
- Shevonne
@Rochelle By the way, thanks for posting this picture. I love Maggie, and I am glad that she is showing that breastfeeding is a natural thing. I am all for breastfeeding (breastfed my son for 16 months, and my daughter for 9), so I am happy for this discussion. =D
- Shevonne
Shevonne, right, and my wife does that as well sometimes, you know, to be polite and all. But you know how baby (especially the older they get) sometimes just doesn't want to be covered and wants to see what's going on around him in between sips? Well at that point it's too bad for those who get offended, because the boob's out there.
- Aviv
Have we truly devolved into barbarians? Yes, Mechanical Ones! On IPod and iPhone Prozac.
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
I am living in Japan for a while now. It is probably worse than USA. 60% of women have never been married and many are in their 40s who are still virgins. Scary society evolving.
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
What John said. I think it's ironic (and very, very sad) that in this society it's more taboo to tell someone that baby formula is bad or that smoking near their baby is a no-go or that letting them cry their brains out for 5 hours is just sick or that their 4-year-old kid is too old for a stroller, than it is to nurse your baby in public, talk about co-sleeping, how you smash organic...
- Aviv
Aviv, it still cracks me up that the "alternative" approaches are actually the traditional approaches, which makes them not so "alternative".
- Rochelle
I wrote a blog post back in January about a woman in Montana who was breastfeeding her baby and had some anonymous dipshit call the health department on her! So, yeah, the harassment of women breastfeeding still happens. http://www.vicster.net/blog...
- vicster is...
it's amusing that those parts of the world having never been exposed to or adopted monotheistic religions have no desire to cover breasts and hide them - just saying . . .
- William Harryman
Hmm... the app description said it was in English, but it looks like it's only in Dutch. Oh well, it was free and should be easy enough to figure out anyway.
- Grey Drane
OK, the app could be a lot better. The basics: data doesn't update as regularly as it could; classifications (e.g. green and polka-dot jerseys) don't update during a stage; can't tap on riders in current-stage view to view info on the rider.
- Grey Drane
Other features that would be cool: GPS tracking of Rabobank riders; heart-rate data on Rabobank riders; "virtual" yellow jersey classification; real-time GPS tracking of various groups (breakaway, peleton, jerseys, etc.) on aerial-view map.
- Grey Drane
Also news sources in English would be nice. A Twitter search stream of Tour-related tweets would be cool, too.
- Grey Drane
All in all, a nice idea that was implemented too quickly. Still not a bad little app, though.
- Grey Drane
Even better Twitter idea: give the Rabobank riders Twitter accounts and feed them into the app.
- Grey Drane
And it's the only app I can find that does live, (almost) real-time stage tracking. Anyone know of another one?
- Grey Drane
Peter -- Interesting. Thanks. But I've got video on Eurosport. It's mostly the stats and news I'd want in an iPhone app. Video is nice for when I'm not near a TV, though.
- Grey Drane
"Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve. Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work."
- Paul Buchheit
from Bookmarklet
Sounds awesome btw! "The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform."
- Paul Buchheit
This sounds very, very interesting. Shame we have to wait till fall to hear more details. :)
- Sean Brady
Timing matters a lot Sanat. 10 years ago the tech and users weren't ready for this, but we're just about there now, especially with tech such as NaCl.
- Paul Buchheit
I agree with Paul. I think that people are ready for this. I am wondering however if there will be some confusion regarding Android versus Google Chrome OS.
- Edwin Khodabakchian
Edwin: I was confused till now about Android usage in netbooks but this announcement actually clears that up.
- Kiran Patchigolla
Paul, your guess on timing is probably right. The story broke, so they hit publish. Note the last paragraph says to wait until fall and to have a nice summer. This is a very interesting development indeed.
- Louis Gray
How will this differ from just being a special Linux distro?
- Gabe
Gabe, in the same way that Android differs from a special Linux distro :). They both use Linux as a device driver layer, but have built up a whole new application layer.
- Paul Buchheit
Gabe: from the blog post, they are writing a new window manager (and presumably getting rid of X since it is so slow and resource intensive). And I also presume working on startup time and power consumption will involve some deeper changes to the OS than most Linux distributions.
- Bret Taylor
Right on. Just like Apple did with Mac OS X.
- Sam Grover
Bright move for an excellent project. V8 is so slick, I wished for it to be utilized in a broader domain than "just" within the confines of a browser. Stripping out all kinds of unnecessary OS components, building a layer of native windowing on top. Very excited.
- Mustafa K. Isik
a new windows system is interesting - Google just open sourced a custom NX server (http://google-opensource.blogspot.com/2009...) so I wonder if that's related. I think overloading the Chrome name is a mistake, though - look how that worked for Sun with Java (remember the Java Desktop System - which was a Linux distribution and JavaFX?)
- Nick Lothian
Won't people get annoyed when Flash doesn't work, or QuickTime movies won't play, or something like that?
- Gabe
How soon will Chrome have enough market share for Google to push major new browser features? There are lots of ways to imagine a browser, but we're all still using more or less the same one.
- Zak Stone
I'm so excited. I wonder when we can get our hands on the real stuff.
- Sung W. Lim
Gabe: I think a lot of the work that is going into HTML5 is to mitigate those issues.
- Mark Trapp
from iPhone
Mark: Are you suggesting that people will write their apps in HTML5 (along with or instead of Flash), or that somebody is going to make a usable implementation of Flash in HTML5?
- Gabe
Gabe: The former. HTML5 includes built-in video and audio support, and includes Canvas, which will in large part act as a replacement for most use-cases of Flash. Some parts of it are already out there, but it'll still be a couple of years, I think, before it's ubiquitous. Maybe Google will get Apple and Microsoft to port their stuff to Linux (like Paul says, Flash is already in the works for Android) so it'll work on Chrome OS, but it seems more likely they're banking on HTML5's success.
- Mark Trapp
from iPhone
A new windowing system just to run Chrome? Sounds a bit overkill to me. It feels like their "broad vision" is ignoring some important offline user behavior that can't easily be addressed with Gears. Soon they will probably need a file manager, a desktop, proper windowing, reserved areas on the screen to display "things" about what's happening and some more. Yeah, voila, what I just described is a fully-fledged Linux desktop, something Ubuntu-like. I hope they're not reinventing the old wheel.
- Enver ALTIN
What's going to happen when somebody needs to print a boarding pass or tax form?
- Gabe
Hopefully it will have some kind of printer support. Printers have to be the most backwards, broken part of the PC world though. Even on osx and windows, they never quite work, and sharing is nearly impossible.
- Paul Buchheit
@Paul .. good luck with that :) But we don't need printers, right? Everything can be done on the web.
- Tim Hoeck
Enver: except that Ubuntu takes forever to start up and X and all common desktop environments (Gnome, KDE) are slow as heck. I hope they reinvent a few wheels, if those are the wheels I have to choose from.
- Bret Taylor
Google and Microsoft getting more and more alike.
- Rutger Blom
Will Google take a cut from the devs for apps written for Google Chrome OS?
- τorƍue
Rutger: They are in the same space but not alike. i cannot imagine windows being open sourced
- Kiran Patchigolla
τorƍue, nope.. but you'll have to look at ads in your OS. :)
- Tim Hoeck
Kiran: I can actually see Microsoft releasing an open source OS if that generates money for them. I just meant Google, by first releasing a browser and now an OS, is starting to look more like Microsoft in my eyes. They just apply a different license to their source code and "do no evil" right?
- Rutger Blom
Finally, maybe it'll force IE to become standards-compliant. I'm sick of this ..oh yeah, now I have to make it work on IE (6,7,8).. this is such a clean concept (that we all knew was coming)!!
- Chris Myles
Did you notice that few weeks ago, Google announced that they were integrating NaCl into Chromium: "we have a strong preference for delivering Native Client pre-installed or built into the browser, and we'll be focusing on that as our main strategy for delivering Native Client to users. Careful readers may have already noticed evidence of integration into Chromium...
- Jérôme Flipo
Bret, sluggishness is a feature of today's Linux desktop, I agree -- but determining to reinvent instead of giving a few hands to fix the problem? Just to host a browser? It doesn't seem like a good move to me.
- Enver ALTIN
I hope the good old classical *nix utilities will be available in this grand new OS, specifically vim+git? I'm just going so well with Linux.
- Juvenn Woo
I think they should have kept it a secret until they had more code. Also, history is littered with attempts to do this. Remember NetPC? Remember JavaPC/JavaOS? Remember Netscape's Javascript Push Desktop? Maybe the web is mature enough that people are ready for this concept now, atleast on mobile devices like the Pre and NetBooks, but there's a still a lot of people who like to run...
- Ray Cromwell
ChromeOS is custom GUI for web apps running on a linux kernel, right? So how exactly is this different from Palm's WebOS which is a linux kernel running a custom version of webkit.
- Greg Morgan
Greg, it's probably conceptually similar, except that ChromeOS will be designed for netbooks instead of cellphones (which obviously have different ui constraints).
- Paul Buchheit
Isn't a huge difference compared to WebOS (which allows some API calls to the hardware) that the apps developed for Chrome OS are limited to the webbrowser sandbox? In the blog post Google says "And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform." Unless they try the Microsoft Active X approach to get around that, which sounds like a pretty bad idea to me.
- Daniel Chow
Will this mean I get adsense on my desktop? ;-) No but srsly I am amazed to see that this interesting project wasn't started by a team that has just left Google.
- TobiasVerhoog.com
@Ray Cromwell, you're right, they should have kept their cool, and let the NYT publish what it wants without explicit corroboration. It's MSFT that's the master of premature announcements, aka vaporware, not Google. As it is now, the assorted self-styled tech punditry of the world will have half the summer and fall to speculate, when they could have been caught largely unawares with a simple faït accomplí.
- ianf ⌘
@patrick "This sounds like it would be perfect for Arringtons CrunchPad" and @Matt Cutts: "that would be pretty neat, wouldn't it?" - possibly, only Arrington needs the OS by last friday, not "in second half of 2010," when first "Chrome'd" hardware is supposed to arrive. On a personal note, I'd probably be more enthusiastic had they managed to bring out a stable Chrome browser for OSX, not solely the old Windoze… first things first.
- ianf ⌘
@ianf: Like your "rock dots" in fàït accômplí :)
- Joel Webber
I hope standart Linux tools will be available :-) Vim, ssh should be there!
- Eren Türkay
Someone said "I hope they're not reinventing the wheel" -- I hate to break it to you, but that is what Google does best: reinvent. Search Engines, webmail, jabber, web browsers, linux for phones, email ... all of them had already been invented once ;-)
- Joel Bennett
If we never reinvented the wheel, we'd still be using tree trunks to roll things on.
- Rich
a great opportunity for linux, IMHO. And anyway, another player in the field of OS, which is good ;-)
- Marco Castellani
I hope Chrome OS will bring real innovations to Linux (which is already innovative). Not only Google's logo!

Oh, yeas? And what epochal software, pray, has the Bible brought forth? I can only think of the virus of religion itself, but that's hardly a cause to celebrate [spoken as true atheist].

We just added a "Best of day" link at the bottom of the page. The best part is that it works for friend lists too, so you can have a "Best of day from family", etc. Thanks to Matt Cutts for the suggestion (http://friendfeed.com/mattcut...)
Nice! I was just thinking about this today, but it'd also be awesome to have a "Best of" link for user profiles as well, so it'd be easy to see which of a users (or yourself) updates/posts were the most popular
- Haggis (Sean Loyless)
this is good. how about also adding best of week and month and putting the same tool on searches as well?
- Thomas Hawk
Awesome...I've really missed this since the redesign.
- Mark Krynsky
And guess who comes up twice as soon as I click this new feature...? Paul Buchheit!!! :-)
- Ton Zijp
This is great but hopefully will be expanded to groups, users and saved searches too? And agree with Thomas about best of week/month too.
- Kol Tregaskes
The Linux desktop I was programming on just melted down. Sparks and smoke out of the back and everything. Paul's reaction: "It just couldn't take your productivity."
Nothing like the smell of burning plastic in the afternoon to set the atmosphere for the office...
- Bret Taylor
You must have forgotten to fsck your filesystem before recompiling the kernel so that you could attach a new keyboard. Or something like that.
- Joel Webber
It's a testament to Linux stability that this didn't happen sooner.
- Bruce Lewis
Sounds like a hardware issue to me. What does the OS have to do with it at all?
- Robert Felty
awesomeness. I remember a friend's gig when his bass amp had flames shooting out the back before it completely blew. blaze of glory.
- Laura Norvig
Apparently it didn't get the "Linux never breaks" memo ;) Now, off to the apple store like a good lad!

When your computer melts, that's a great time to take an ergonomic rest break for a few minutes.
- Matt Cutts
I think the problem is you worked your computer to death.
- imabonehead
Unless there are flames and the risk of severe personal injury, a little smoke and sparking is no excuse to stop programming. Back to work.
- Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
Wow, that's too funny!! You might wanna ease up on the coffee! I like Matt's recommendation of an ergonomic break. I think the fried computer was trying to tell you that you're working just a little bit too hard :)
