XDRTB.org | Spread the story. Stop the Disease. | The photographs

XDRTB.org is an extraordinary effort to tell the story of extremely drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) and TB through powerful photographs taken by James Nachtwey. - Yuval Atzmon via Bookmarklet
Photographer James Nachtwey has been covering war and human rights stories for 30 years, traveling from Northern Ireland to Iraq, from the orphanages of Romania to the deadly killing grounds of the Sudan. He knows the power of news photographs to raise awareness and make real change. In 2007, he was awarded the TED Prize, which comes with $100,000 and one wish to change the world. These photographs and this project are his wish. - Yuval Atzmon

"Bah", sez I. "exploit #1" would give you the same functionality sites like (e.g.) http://666kb.de give you (I used this for a while at FF before I learned how to natively upload images :s ). "exploit #2" should be a blitz-krieg of a zillion images or so in order to significantly affect the bill. If both Amazon and FF don't have floodgates against an attack of such a scale, this can be settled as soon as it's discovered. Even if the attack is too sneaky to be noticed (e.g. a DDOS from many PCs using many *existing* and *active* accounts) - If FF ends up paying a lot for hosting, it proves they're popular, and I'm sure this brings them money in the long run (not to mention discount rates). - The Dod

"In real life, when you take two species, a horse and a donkey, and mix them up you get a mule. In the browsers world, when you take a horse (Firefox/IE) and a donkey (Safari) and mix them up, you get – Google Chrome." - Yuval Atzmon via Bookmarklet

Here's how TrueKnowledge interpreted my question: "Are there at least some bears (any of various usually omnivorous mammals of the family Ursidae that have a shaggy coat and a short tail and walk with the entire lower surface of the foot touching the ground) that bear (an unknown intransitive action (an action which is done by itself without it being done to something. e.g. sleep) that is not yet in the knowledge base)". I love it. - Yuval Atzmon

This is a very good presentation. Even if you're not interested in the potential use of XMPP for data services, the background introduction is worth your time. There's an insightful example about FF and Flickr. I also mentioned this presentation in the context of another discussion - http://friendfeed.com/e/ae6018... - Yuval Atzmon

interesting research. "Factoring in a few technical limitations, API coverage issues and some secret sauce, I assume I’m missing about 15-20% of the users. In fact I could be bold and speculate that FriendFeed has an active userbase of about 75K users. Again, this is based only on partial data and my own interpretation." - Thomas Hawk

Mike from Techcrunch said today that he has "10,177 subscribers" as opposed to the 6 or 7000 you cite. Scoble has more. Maybe you could ask several of them to reveal their numbers? http://www.techcrunch.com/2008... - Andrew Baron
Is Jeremy Zawondy an active user on FF ? Each an every one of his post are thru another service.Yet to see Jeremy actually directly post anything on F. What does "active" mean 2 other FF users ? - Peter Dawson
@andrewbaron: I've some other people posting numbers today, they fit well within the 15-20% error margin I assumed I had. Also, with the most popular users like Scoble and Arrington I'm sure to miss a few (a lot of) dormant users who subscribed to these top users. I cannot discover them using a crawler if they don't do anything on FF. That's the basic limitation. - Yuval Atzmon
@slashpd (Peter): In the context of my research "active" means discoverable, and it doesn't matter if a person actually does anything as long as his feed (or comments+likes) keep flowing in. - Yuval Atzmon
