Glad to have you part of the beta community Marcos. - Austin Hill
Don't worry, I like being part of the community ;-) Actually I was surprised to see myself there, just because I think I could be way more active in Akoha than I actually have... In the end, it's probably a question of having more (and more variety) of (physical) cards in my pocket... Maybe you should have a "one click button" than would generate a PDF with a number of randomly chosen cards to print... - Marcos Marado

The Next Real Estate Crisis (June 2008) - http://www.businessweek.com/lifesty...
The Next Real Estate Crisis (June 2008)
"The Mortgage Bankers Assn. said on June 5 that the option ARM problem is growing. The group reported that the national rate of foreclosure starts for prime ARMs, including option ARMs, increased to 1.55% in the first quarter, up from 0.53% a year earlier. In California the foreclosure start rate in the first quarter was 2%, vs. 0.5% a year earlier. In Florida, the rate was 2.57%, compared with 0.5% in the first quarter of 2007. "California, Florida, Arizona and Nevada combined…represent 62% of all foreclosures started on prime ARM loans, and 84% of the increase in prime ARM foreclosures," the group said." - MikeAmundsen from Bookmarklet
"The loans automatically recast after five years, but many will recast sooner as loan balances hit specific principal caps—typically between 110% and 125% of the initial loan amount. Many of these loans are expected to recast within the next two years, meaning that borrowers' monthly payments will swell to include both principal and interest." - MikeAmundsen

Announcing the Pixelated Blog Conference Series - http://www.chrisbrogan.com/announc...
Though I 'get it', I'm mixed about calling this a 'conference'. I mean, its cool to aggregate various lectures into one place and amazing that we can even do that in this web20 world, but doesn't the deep and enjoyable learning really happen in the conversations at conferences? It does for me - the more truly engaging and interactive, the better. Sure, there's blog comments, but that's pretty minimal. - Leif Hansen
I visit with people once every two or three weeks who have never left their home town. Further, lots of people won't attend TED, won't see some of those speakers, etc. Yes, regular conferences trump watching videos, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't present and provide learning in different ways. - Chris Brogan
But maybe there's another name for this type of aggregation. Something along the lines of distance learning. And speaking for those of us who are very distant from almost everything, it's a great idea. - Becky McCray
Know the difference between a white paper and an ebook? Portrait vs. Horizontal. Only, when marketers start releasing ebooks instead of white papers, the download numbers go way up. I think this is similar. - Chris Brogan
If I'm hearing ya right, you're saying that though the name may not be accurate --calling it a 'conference' might get numbers up more than 'distance learning', etc? - Leif Hansen
Or another way of saying this: what if conference in its roots just means a gathering of the minds. Does that have to be face to face? FriendFeed proves not. - Chris Brogan
Yes, we are in the 'social media' biz. As for its 'roots' though,"from conferre 'to bring together, compare,' from com- 'together' + ferre 'to bear' Sense of 'taking counsel' led to conference". Whether we're truly 'together' when mixing our pixels will be the question of the century. As the digital world gets richer, it gets more dangerous as well. And remember, they're now saying most of communication is closer to 90% non-verbal (and in txt world?). But I'm probably now taking us on a tangent...;) - Leif Hansen
I stopped paying attention. You forgot to mention the attention span. - Chris Brogan
Hey, when we finally 'jack in' to our last conscious virtual conference, maybe you won't have attention to pay. ;) - Leif Hansen

Is Social Media About Taking or Giving? - http://learntoduck.com/micah...
...or a bit of both? - David Young
Just communication through a piece of iron.:) - Igor Poltavskiy
Thought-provoking post! I think humans are subject to a certain amount of "copying behavior" -- what my dad used to call "monkey see, monkey do." I know I've seen someone tweet or comment on FriendFeed about waffles or cheeseburgers or some random food item, and the next day I've found myself strangely craving it. :-D So in one sense social media can end up as yet another advertising medium (thank you Google). - Karim
But the potential is there for someone to also comment on how they are donating time or money to some virtuous, philanthropic effort, and that can encourage copying behavior as well. Social media can also encourage giving. It doesn't *have* to be all flash mobs and viral ads. It may just really reflect ourselves, en masse. - Karim
What powers a lot of social media is the idea of reciprocal altruism. I link to you, you link to me. I see someone post a funny clip on Youtube and I find a mashup of similar funny clips to upload myself. I see someone has changed something on Wikipedia, which encourages me to participate and do the same. This what anthropologists and economists call gift economies, because work that otherwise could have monetary rewards are done for social reasons. So it's give & take, but reciprocity powers the system - Austin Hill

@Rachel We'd love to have you check it out, but at this time we are focused on more late-teen/adult themed missions. The need for safety when involved teens in a reality based game has caused us to delay missions & decks focused on teen demographics until we can build a safe segregated area for them. We don't want adults playing "Invite someone to drinks" with a young teen. We've begun speaking with teachers about a moderated set of mission kits & area for them to play with students. - Austin Hill

Who needs Friendship? Nobody.
From Mark. Blog.: "[Hodson's] (and Owyang's) reduction of social media to merely collections of news feeds is another type of neediness: one is only as good as what one can do for me. If you stop giving me stuff, you're worthless. In this reduction, they do social media a great disservice: social media isn't just about getting the best information, but about getting the best information about those to whom you are connected. Social media doesn't work without the social part. " - Mark Trapp from Bookmarklet
Sometimes it's good to just sit back, and read a page without worrying about the quality of the content, its origins, or even its authenticity. I guess that's using FF as mere entertainment then. Still, is there anything wrong with that sometimes? - Ian May
Ian: I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but it's not taking advantage of what's supposed to be the uniquely defining aspect of social media: being able to leverage each other to get information to us about things and people we care about. There's something more to social media than just an overhyped online magazine. - Mark Trapp

There's some important reading here. There's still is a lot of money out there with essentially no where to go. Found enough good stuff in links & commentary here & twitter to do a (gasp) blog post on this. You remember those, right? - Brian Oberkirch
Most companies I've studied are horrible at bootstrapping community. They don't know how to get one going. But they are fairly good at managing things that are already built. So, a community manager is someone who keeps an already-existing community happy. Who listens to the community and takes care of problems. Who finds new content and other things for that community, IE, who feeds that community. Here on FF we're ALL community managers due to the distributed nature of how FF works. - Robert Scoble
@Robert I couldn't agree more. Been on both ends. Was moderator for a huge board for a couple of rock stars and did exactly as you say. That community thrived because they wanted to be there. Nothing I did generated that. I only maintained it. I sure learned the difference when I tried to start communities for several other orgs! - Melanie Reed
Way back in the day I "managed" several mailing lists (I still miss majordomo, btw), most of which were very focused. It's really more like herding cats than cattle. A largely thankless job that you do because you have a passion for the topic at hand. Community managers, if up to the task, can keep the channel clear of enough noise for the community leaders' signal to get through. - ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
They hang out in the community and rep the company and its products. Apologizes if the company screws up. Encourages people to choose the company's products over the others. Helps people find the right person in the company to work with. Retains their humanity, and generally takes the customer's side whenever possible. Quits if the company acts in an unprincipled way, so they act as a guarantor of the honesty of the company. A canary in the coalmine. Best if it's the CEO of the company. - Dave Winer

Why Does Building A Community Mean It Has To Be Free? - http://www.winextra.com/2008...
It doesn't, of course. The major downside is that if one person requires payment, usually a competitor will be free. It drives the entire market down to zero. - Louis Gray
the interesting question here as well Louis is quality and longevity of content between the two different ideas of community. Would people be willing th be more involved and make more use of a community that they had to pay dues to belong to in contrast to one they can just walk in the doors anytime they please and then leave without any further considerations .. more curiosity on my part than anything else - Steven Hodson
Louis - while I will always agree with your statement - today I interviewed the company behind jdate - it shows that pay can work in some areas - my post will be up tomorrow with more on the topic - Allen Stern
Even if there are free competitors there are some services that people will pay to be apart of the community. - Corvida
The greater the popularity of an online service/product, the more likely one or more free alternatives can and will eventually exist. - abacab
I don't think that the existence of free alternatives automatically predicts a demise for paid services. - Corvida
I'd add the phrase "all things being equal" to abacab, Louis's and Corvida's statement. In the case of JDate and Wall Street Journal, there's a certain something (real or perceived) that's worth the extra pay behind the wall. If it were simply Yet Another SocNet, then the "why pay" criticisms would hold, I think. - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Plenty of paid and nonpaid services that do more or less the same thing coexist, that's true. I think for some paid services, there are people that believe they get a higher level of attention, or a lower level of noise, or some other value-add (maybe proprietary info or features others can't legally offer), and that makes it worth it for them. I think there are also plenty of people that pay for things not realizing any free alternatives exist. - abacab
Good clarification Mark. I can agree with that. - Corvida
Agree with Mark. I'm a paid subscriber for ESPN's premium services, and have been for the WSJ for years. They offer unique content leadership. - Louis Gray

Supply and demand! The great part of the net is that there are many 'hobbyists' out there who aren't trying to profit off of their work. Other companies are utilizing it as a value add. That makes a typical business who's supplying the same service at a cost quite a disadvantage. To them I say, "oh well!". - Douglas Karr from twhirl
