Comment on Autodesk Buys TinkerCAD To Expand It’s 123D Porfolio by CAD Guy - http://www.deelip.com/...
Very Interesting !! So Autodesk missed the opportunity to acquire SketchUp but grabbed the next best one. If Autodesk can attach a "Tinkercad like" Front-End to its desktop products which can then run at the server side, This could accelerate Autodesk transition to the cloud based SaaS business model. I believe Autodesk would be more interested in the front end, JavaScript (ShapeScript) and the Design Tree more than the Gen6 modeling kernel. - IntelliCAD

Thanks! That's correct, Gen6 was designed to burst single operations lasting just a few hundred milliseconds to the whole cluster. - IntelliCAD

Kai, thanks for the reply. I looked up the information and the TC kernel seems to actually use the whole cluster for a single user for short amounts of time? This is really impressive. - IntelliCAD

Hello Kai, am I right that the Gen6 kernel is based on voxel representation (not B-Rep)? So this is another major reason to keep all the computations on cluster? Nikolay Snytnikov www.ledas.com - IntelliCAD

If you want to keep the latency of complex operations low, as was our explicit design goal with Tinkercad, then you need to move the computation to the server side. Some approximate numbers will illustrate this. There is about 100x more CPU cores in our cluster working on each boolean operation compared to a typical client machine. The hand optimized assembly and C code is about 100x faster than the corresponding Javascript code would be, mainly because numerical computation in Javascript is slow. To summarize, an operation that takes 1 second on the server side would take almost 3 hours when executed in Javascript. - IntelliCAD

Boolean operations being computationally expensive is just one reason for doing it on the cloud. Another one is not giving away their modeling kernel as javascript. - IntelliCAD

>This boolean union operation is a computationally expensive one and doesn’t happen in the web browser. I don't see how the former follows from the latter. It looks more like a deliberate architecture feature to keep the code proprietary and locked to their servers. http://badassjs.com/post... - IntelliCAD

But let's not forget that it will be your daughter's choice as to what she will profess in, not you. I have seen my daughter grow and she wants to be an engineer rather than the doctor my wife and I wanted her to be. However, she is now one of the most successful in her field. Comment on GrabCAD Workbench First Impressions by Alex Kogan - http://www.deelip.com/...
Hi Deelip, Thanks for the interesting review. I tend to agree with you that high-resolution models are not required for 3D View and collaboration. Vizup 3D optimization does exactly what you are asking for - reduces model sizes 5-10 times while keeping the same visualization quality. I vizup-ed (optimized) your Piston-Cap model and uploaded the results into "vizup-optimization-examples-for-deelip" project. Take a look and let me know your impression. I'm interested in your expert opinion. Best regards, Alex - IntelliCAD

Hardi, Blake, I created a Workbench project first to share the optimized models with Deelip. But then I realized that I can't invite GrabCAD user to the project by name - I have to know an email. I hope it is in works. Still, lots of useful functionality to start. Best regards, Alex - IntelliCAD

Comment on First Version Of Russian Geometric Kernel Announced by murray - http://www.deelip.com/...
There is an open source kernel, OpenCascade, nowhere near as developed as proprietry kernels, and the open-source CAD apps that use it are understandably underdone compared to commercial equivalents. There's an extensible/educational CAD app backed by the Indian government education and departments that uses it, though. - IntelliCAD

Comment on First Version Of Russian Geometric Kernel Announced by CAD Guy - http://www.deelip.com/...
The decision of whether or not it is immediately profitable to replace an existing modeling kernel would mainly depend on: 1) Near term product road map. 2) How well the CAD application is engineered/designed from the beginning so as the geometric modelling code is modularized. Having said that, the long term benefits are obvious. The dispute between DS and ADSK over kernel is one example. Vectorworks adopting Parasolid is another example. There are only a handful of modeling kernels currently in the industry and they are all owned/controlled by companies that have their own competing products/interests. Moreover, all these kernels CGM, Parasolid, ACIS, Shape Manager, Granite et al were originally developed for the previous generation of Design Products. They don't take advantage of advances in hardware and software technologies. Just as now developers don't have to write assembly code when developing a website, lots of functionality that was originally done at the application level... - IntelliCAD

Absolutely makes sense. I've had several interview conversations with Dr. Biplab Sarkar who was with PTC and has been CTO at Nemetschek Vectorworks for years now and the labor explained in moving to a new kernel can be significant. - IntelliCAD

Comment on First Version Of Russian Geometric Kernel Announced by Anthony Frausto - http://www.deelip.com/...
Absolutely. Changing kernels can be big work for the developer and there is serious financial reasons also. Not just about legacy data. Nemetschek Vectorworks switched kernels (went to Parasolid) about 4 versions back and they have just now finished up converting all the elements of their application to the new kernel. They spread out the work over many years so they could reserve developer resources for new features. - IntelliCAD
