Films dealing with BDSM rarely strike a proper balance, they either approach it with too much caution, or they sensationalize it to the point it is simply a caricature of itself. Chamberlain is no stranger to kink, and his familiarity is what carries the film. A masterwork of show, don't tell, the Anti-Samaritan Hotline approach to BDSM culture and human failure and despair is so human, it's not just accessible, but irresistible. - AV Flox

But it would be a serious mistake to look narrowly at such benefits and conclude that the Web is making us smarter. In a Science article published in early 2009, prominent developmental psychologist Patricia Greenfield reviewed more than 40 studies of the effects of various types of media on intelligence and learning ability. She concluded that “every medium develops some cognitive skills at the expense of others.” Our growing use of the Net and other screen-based technologies, she wrote, has led to the “widespread and sophisticated development of visual-spatial skills.” But those gains go hand in hand with a weakening of our capacity for the kind of “deep processing” that underpins “mindful knowledge acquisition, inductive analysis, critical thinking, imagination, and reflection.” - AV Flox

Establish Your Dating Terms of Service | BlogHer - http://www.blogher.com/expecta...
You can say that expressing your expectations of relationship before you even kiss is too analytical and that it rejects the most wondrous components of relationships: emotion and spontaneous passion. The truth is that we tend to rein in emotion and passion more often because we fear where we're going. If you know what everyone wants and expects, you don't have to hold back. You can fall at your leisure, as fast and as hard as you want. I know it's scary to be open about what you want. It means you have to know what that is and it exposes you to the risk of being told someone you like doesn't want that with you. But let me ask you something: would you rather hear about this sooner or later? - AV Flox

Why I adore the night | Jeanette Winterson | The Guardian - http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeand...
I have noticed that when all the lights are on, people tend to talk about what they are doing – their outer lives. Sitting round in candlelight or firelight, people start to talk about how they are feeling – their inner lives. They speak subjectively, they argue less, there are longer pauses. - AV Flox

Kids and Sexy Costumes: The Problem With Halloween | BlogHer - http://www.blogher.com/kids-an...
Without a doubt, Halloween is a survivor; one that sticks around by absorbing the qualities of the culture in prominence where the holiday is celebrated. The truth of the matter is that Halloween is not a holiday for kids. The shift to kids is a very recent thing in its epic history, and I think the emergence of more and more sexualized costumes is both a reflection of our culture's attitudes toward sex and an attempt to take the holiday back. - AV Flox

Mob Rule! How Users Took Over Twitter | Steven Levy | WIRED - http://www.wired.com/magazin...
It’s easy to write off Twitter as a happy accident, a right-place, right-time fluke. But that misses the point. When Twitter’s creators designed the service, they made a series of crucial and deliberate decisions — ones that seem brilliant in retrospect — that created the conditions that allow users to innovate. - AV Flox

The Death of Risk in Silicon Valley | Sarah Lacey | BusinessWeek - http://www.businessweek.com/technol...
Less risk-taking by entrepreneurs means less outright failure. A lot of burned startup founders and investors see this as a plus. But any macroeconomist will tell you it's the rare home runs—successful, innovative companies yielding high returns—that create jobs and capital that keep the Valley humming. - AV Flox

The Holy Grail of the Unconscious | Sara Corbett | The New York Times - http://www.nytimes.com/glogin...
“Once [the Red Book] is published, there will be a ‘before’ and ‘after’ in Jungian scholarship,” Shamdasani told me, adding, “it will wipe out all the biographies, just for starters.” What about the rest of us, the people who aren’t Jungians, I wondered. Was there something in the Red Book for us? “Absolutely, there is a human story here,” Shamdasani said. “The basic message he’s sending is ‘Value your inner life.’ ” - AV Flox

What I see here is not the call of feminism, what I see is women dismissing the realities of other women using words and phrases like, "dangerous," "self-obsessed," "needy," "twisted," and "not normal." And that is a lot more horrifying to me than anything I have read in a confessional piece. - AV Flox

The Not-So-Hidden Politics of Class Online | Danah Boyd - http://www.danah.org/papers...
Herein lies the reality that makes all of this quite messy to deal with. It wasn't just anyone who left MySpace to go to Facebook. In fact, if we want to get to the crux of what unfolded, we might as well face an uncomfortable reality... What happened was modern day "white flight." Whites were more likely to leave or choose Facebook. The educated were more likely to leave or choose Facebook. Those from wealthier backgrounds were more likely to leave or choose Facebook. Those from the suburbs were more likely to leave or choose Facebook. Those who deserted MySpace did so by "choice" but their decision to do so was wrapped up in their connections to others, in their belief that a more peaceful, quiet, less-public space would be more idyllic. - AV Flox

How to Save MySpace | Jason Nazar - http://www.jasonnazar.com/2009...
I wouldn’t bet against MySpace. They attract over 70 million people a month (just in the US), and by most accounts are still one of the 10 most popular sites in the world. But they’re clearly headed in the wrong direction, and have been for the last two years. Having grown up in LA, and having started Docstoc down here, there’s a bit of a shared connection. I know many of their founders and early employees, and one of the co-founders of Intermix (the parent company of MySpace) is an investor. MySpace has lost the battle as the “place for friends”. If the powers that be can accept this and move forward with breakneck speed, they will have an incredibly huge opportunity to build something we will all be talking about again. - AV Flox
