How about parallel processing of elements stored in one of the java.util.* collections? Could we make the Groovy each(), collect() and such methods leverage multiple threads to speed them up? In fact, it is very easy. I wrote briefly about the new concurrency enhancements planned for Java 7 under JSR-166y earlier. I'm still happily experimenting with the library and here's how you could seamlessly employ ParallelArrays to speed up your Groovy collections. Thanks to Groovy meta-programming capabilities we will replace some of the original GDK methods on collections with parallel implementations. - Avi Flax

With the Cascading sub-project Cascading.groovy, users can create sophisticated data processing applications using the Groovy scripting language. We think Cascading.groovy will be a great tool for those groups that need to expose Hadoop to the 'casual' user who needs to get and manipulate valuable data on an organizations Hadoop cluster, but who possibly doesn't have the time to learn Java, the Hadoop API, or to think in MapReduce to solve their problems and access data. No Groovy code is run in the cluster, it is only used as a means to build complex Cascading Flows and Cascades. Think of it as an Ant build file. Ant is configured by XML build files which represent internal graph of tasks the Ant tool needs to execute. We find XML tedious for such applications and figured Groovy to be a better alternative. - Avi Flax

Cascading provides means for defining arbitrarily large and complex, reusable, and fault tolerant data processing workflows, and a job planner for rendering those workflows into cluster executable jobs. Cascading allows the developer to assemble predefined workflow tasks and tools, collect those workflows into a logical 'unit of work', and to efficiently schedule and execute them. Where these processes can scale laterally on clusters running in the local datacenter or on Amazon EC2. - Avi Flax

In many countries, traditional water collection involves carrying a 5-gallon (20-liter) bucket on the head. This practice puts a great burden on the body and can damage the spine, neck and knees over time. A full Hippo Water Roller only feels like 22 pounds (10 kg) when rolled over level ground, making it possible for almost anyone to transport 24 gallons (90 liters) of water in much less time and with greater ease. - Avi Flax

I’m not playing gotcha here. This is telling: if Paulson can’t be honest about what he himself sent to Congress — if he not only made an incredible power grab, but is now engaged in black-is-white claims that he didn’t — there is no reason to trust him on anything related to his bailout plan. - Avi Flax

PHP does not have threading anywhere in its massive core. We can, however, fake it by relying on the underlying operating system’s multitasking abilities instead of PHP. This article will show you how. PHP has no built in support for threading. But there can still be times when you’ve got lengthy code to run and idle CPU cyles you’d like to capitalize on. We can treat child processes as threads. I created a PHP4-compatible class named Thread to abstract away the details of process management. - Avi Flax

What Would RESTUnit Look Like? · I’m early in this thought process, but some basics occur to me: ¶ Access to GET/POST/PUT/DELETE with fine control over the headers, and utilities to wrangle ETags and so on. Easy XPath for pulling stuff out of messages which happen to be in XML. Convenience functions for running around the DOM digging URIs out of message bodies. Possibly some Atom-specific stuff, on the assumption that a lot of the payloads in RESTful conversations will be Atom. For example, you really need Entry#link(rel). A place to stash information about the resources you’ve created and are interacting with, and a cleanup function so you leave the URI space the way it was when you started. - Avi Flax
