How exercise, a physiological activity, might directly affect mood and anxiety — psychological states — was unclear. Now, thanks in no small part to improved research techniques and a growing understanding of the biochemistry and the genetics of thought itself, scientists are beginning to tease out how exercise remodels the brain, making it more resistant to stress. In work undertaken at the University of Colorado, Boulder, for instance, scientists have examined the role of serotonin, a neurotransmitter often considered to be the “happy” brain chemical. That simplistic view of serotonin has been undermined by other researchers, and the University of Colorado work further dilutes the idea. In those experiments, rats taught to feel helpless and anxious, by being exposed to a laboratory stressor, showed increased serotonin activity in their brains. But rats that had run for several weeks before being stressed showed less serotonin activity and were less anxious despite the stress.

Sure, a truly awesome FPS was released last week (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, for those of you living under a rock), but if you're too broke, too cheap, or just too plain lazy to go out and buy it, you can still get your game on with these online shooters, all of which are free to play on your PC.

VMware has released the source code for VMware Tools as an open source project called open-vm-tools located at Sourceforge. By itself, this isn’t helpful because open-vm-tools does not include an installer and therefore you would need to run shell scripts to merge the working bits of open-vm-tools into the traditional VMware Tools installer. Contributors of Ubuntu have taken open-vm-tools and created a installable package for Ubuntu, and included it in the standard software repositories so you can install it easily.

A wise man once said "We are all at the mercy of our wild monkey minds. Incessantly swinging from branch to branch." With multiple windows and applications all vying for our attention, we have sadly adapted our working habits to that of the computer and not the other way around. Ommwriter is a humble attempt to recapture what technology has snatched away from us today: our capacity to concentrate. Ommwriter is a simple text processor that firmly believes in making writing a pleasure once again, reinvindicating the close relationship between writer and paper. The more intimate the relation, the smoother the flow of inspiration. If you are a scriptwriter, blogger, journalist, copywriter, poet or just someone who enjoys writing, welcome back to concentrating.

We all love YouTube videos. We all love Homestar Runner. But we don't love it when Flash ads or other Flash-related junk forces our processors to run hot and leech our precious battery fluids. Flash animations and videos are among the top processor hogs on Mac OS X. A single poorly-designed Flash banner - even in an inactive window or tab - can suck up an entire processor core with its shady mortgage offers. Your 5-hour battery life gets cut in half, your laptop runs hotter, and your legs cook to medium-rare.

GetDeb is an unofficial project with the mission to provide the latest open source and freeware applications for the current Ubuntu Linux release, in an easy to install manner. The GetDeb repository extends the official repositories by providing latest versions and new applications. Unlike the official packages, GetDeb packages do not have a predefined release schedule - new software versions are provided as they become available from their authors. There is a short and limited testing phase instead of a full testing cycle to ensure packaging quality, however it is less strict than Ubuntu's official requirements.

The huge number of games available in the iTunes App Store can make delving into the games scene for the iPhone and iPod Touch pretty intimidating at first. Although there's only really a year's worth of content, the volume is already far in excess of what's available for either the Nintendo DS or the PSP. So where do you start? Are the recognizable big name franchises from giants like Electronic Arts a safe bet? Or should you explore more of the indie scene? The truth is that there's a lot of great quality stuff available, but you have to know where to look. To help you out, we've pulled together what we feel are 36 of the best games currently available. Some of them have been available for a while, some of them are updates to previously well-received ideas, and some of them are spectacular new releases that hit the store in the past few weeks. We've played them all though, and we have them on our iPhones.
