After reading this two more times, I think I get it: he's making some sort of case about how Microsoft forced lots of people to figure out ways to abstract what they do to the point that they didn't need specific tools to do it, in the same way, everyone needs to figure out ways to abstract what they like about twitter to make it easy to transition to a new service should one arise. Does Gillmor have a background in the technologies he talks about? It seems like he latches onto technologies he gets 5% of, then attaches buzzwords, and gets his feathers ruffled when people don't know what he's talking about, much less do anything close to what he wants.
