Easy statistics for AdWords A/B testing, and hamsters - http://blog.asmartbear.com/easy-st...
The way you determine whether an A/B test shows a statistically significant difference is: 1. Define N as "the number of trials." For Hammy this is 8+4 = 12. For the AdWords example this is 32+19 = 51. 2. Define D as "half the difference between the 'winner' and the 'loser'." For Hammy this is (8-4) ÷ 2 = 2. For AdWords this is (32-19) ÷ 2 = 6.5. 3. The test result is statistically significant if D2 is bigger than N. For Hammy, D2 is 4, which is not bigger than 12, so it is not significant. For AdWords, D2 is 42.25, which is not bigger than 51, so it is not significant. - Ayush Saran

hoverIntent jQuery Plug-in - http://cherne.net/brian...
hoverIntent is a plug-in that attempts to determine the user's intent... like a crystal ball, only with mouse movement! It works like (and was derived from) jQuery's built-in hover. However, instead of immediately calling the onMouseOver function, it waits until the user's mouse slows down enough before making the call. Why? To delay or prevent the accidental firing of animations or ajax calls. Simple timeouts work for small areas, but if your target area is large it may execute regardless of intent. - Ayush Saran

Enjoymentland » Passion vs rationality - http://enjoymentland.com/2009...
I have long had a funny theory about the nature of passion. My theory is that passion is merely caring about something more than it’s worth. It makes sense that passion is not rational, because otherwise rationality wouldn’t have the stigma of being somewhat passionless. Right? - Ayush Saran

So Serious | Creating Controversy for its own Sake (and How Humility is a Rare Bird Indeed These Days) - http://soserio.us/creatin...
Setting aside the arrogance of an article centered on an unsolicited JPG of the easiest page of a site to tackle—he “spent a couple hours redesigning [their] front page”—I’m amazed that anyone purporting to be a professional interface designer would assume a night of Photoshop earns them the right to be smug. It’s easy to “design” when you’re unencumbered by things like metrics, creative direction, business acumen, sales experience, actual functionality, enterprise scale, or any thought about how a site with millions of page views and users has to function. It’s easy to look at their site versus your comp and go, “See, mine’s better. You guys must really suck at this.” - Ayush Saran

WordPress › I Like This « WordPress Plugins - http://wordpress.org/extend...
If you are an experienced user of Facebook you are aware that it is possible to simply “love” an item instead of comment it. Now we have got a WordPress plugin to implement this for us. I Like This plugin is fairly simple, you can add a meter and a button to vote in your theme to allow your visitors to shout loudly that they like what you write (if so). The first, as its name indicates, displays the number of people who liked this article and the other allows players who have not yet voted to do (if desired). - Ayush Saran

boxy - Facebook-like dialog/overlay, with frills - http://onehackoranother.com/project...
Boxy is a flexible, Facebook-style dialog box for jQuery with support for dragging and size tweening. It differs from other overlays I've seen by providing an object interface to control dialogs after they've been created. And for simple usage scenarios, boxy also provides a jQuery plugin for automatically hooking up links and forms, as well as an ask() helper for presenting multiple choices to the user. - Ayush Saran

Constraints give your life shape. Remove them and most people have no idea what to do: look at what happens to those who win lotteries or inherit money. Much as everyone thinks they want financial security, the happiest people are not those who have it, but those who like what they do. So a plan that promises freedom at the expense of knowing what to do with it may not be as good as it seems. - Ayush Saran

The Anatomy of Determination - http://www.paulgraham.com/determi...
In most domains, talent is overrated compared to determination—partly because it makes a better story, partly because it gives onlookers an excuse for being lazy, and partly because after a while determination starts to look like talent. - Ayush Saran

What I didn't understand was that the value of some new acquisition wasn't the difference between its retail price and what I paid for it. It was the value I derived from it. Stuff is an extremely illiquid asset. Unless you have some plan for selling that valuable thing you got so cheaply, what difference does it make what it's "worth?" The only way you're ever going to extract any value from it is to use it. And if you don't have any immediate use for it, you probably never will. - Ayush Saran

Basically, iTunes makes money by taxing people, not selling them stuff. You can only do that if you own the channel, and even then you don't make much from it, because a toll has to be ignorable to work. Once a toll becomes painful, people start to find ways around it, and that's pretty easy with digital content. - Ayush Saran
