"Built earlier this year on Barcelona's waterfront, the Solar House 2.0 (also called Endesa Pavilion) is a house that has an extruded facade, equipped with solar panels. Each solar-panelled extrusion is angled differently to best adapt to the path of the sun as it moves over the house's site -- with each positioning pre-determined and tweaked on a computer before the facade was built. The configuration of the cantilevered pieces and customized window sizing also controls the interior solar heat gain."

Stephan, the ones on my parents house have done really well (their original set lasted 20+ years, the new ones have been up for a few.) Over time, they get scratched, and less efficient, but overall they've done really well with debris, including the occasional 10" thick tree branch (they saved the roof during the '96 ice storm.)

"As a devoted FriendFeed user, I have tried to convince all of my friends and family to join the site, but a handful of them never quite got their accounts set up properly. With our new Recommend friends feature, I can fix their FriendFeed experience by recommending subscriptions to them." Try it out at http://friendfeed.com/friends...
- Bret Taylor

What am I supposed to get when I click the 'recommend friends' link on someone's pop-up? Currently, the popup just goes away and I don't get directed anywhere else.
- FFing Enigma
Fred: yah, unfortunately, you can only recommend people who you are subscribed you and who are also subscribed back to you.
- Bret Taylor
Mark, I didn't submit a bug report since what is supposed to happen wasn't actually spelled out on the blog post or here; this might be the intended functionality... I hope not, but it's possible.
- FFing Enigma
Tina: it is supposed to pop up a dialog. Sorry for the trouble - we will look into it.
- Bret Taylor
At first I did not understand this, but now that I am checking it out, it is brilliant and addresses much of what we have complained about. NOW what will we complain about?
- Liza + = ?
Just to confirm Bret, the first image in the blog post is what the pop up is supposed to look like, right? Because that's nothing like what the ff.com/recommend page looks like....
- FFing Enigma
I notice that new subscriptions are automatically added to one's home feed. I consider that kind of a bug.
- Meryn Stol
Tina: yes, that is correct. The http://friendfeed.com/friends... page is just a list of people that we think could use some friend recommendations since they have few subscriptions. If you click on any of the "Recommend" links on that page, you will see the same, standard "Recommend friends" dialog.
- Bret Taylor
Where would we find recommendations that others suggest to us?
- Fred Yankowski
@Bret, who receive the recommandation see also who is the recommender?
- Roberto
Fred: You will receive an email as well as a notification on the top of your feed.
- Ross Miller
Roberto: yes, they see who recommended
- Bret Taylor
Bret, if I recommend friends to people who haven't signed in for a long time, will they get email? A lot of my bored friends are not active FF users I think. (quite logical)
- Meryn Stol
Not getting the pop-over when I click 'recommend' on the friendfeed.com/friends/recommend page either... FFox 3.0.12 if it's relevant.
- FFing Enigma
and can I see who has accepted my recommendation?
- Roberto
Roberto: You won't be notified if they accept/deny as the recommender.
- Ross Miller
Ross: Ah, it just appeared on my feed. Cool. (And thanks Meryn)
- Fred Yankowski
Meryn: yes, they will get an email with your recommendations
- Bret Taylor
from email
Bret, I accidently just received an email with previous recommendations. I had already viewed them through the web-interface. But indeed, it's there. Email looks good too, as I expected of course. :)
- Meryn Stol
hey Robert Scoble....I have a trade proposal....you send my name to all your friends...i send your name to all of my friends for the rest of my life....
- Bob DeMarco
I would like that deal, too, Scoble. I like this a lot.
- Ben Hanten
Bob: I charge $1 per friend. :-) just kidding, but the UI makes it so hard to send you to more than a few people.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Bret: You guys rock! This is so much better than FollowFriday, which I recommended just a while back. Now, I'm waiting for some recommendation emails! :)
- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
If there’s something about friends and family not having their account set up properly, I’d prefer a way to recommend them the streams they forgot to add. For example, I could tell them “You forgot to add your Digg stream and your fourth and eight blog. Here’s the link.” Then he could just click the recommendation and had it set up easily.
- Natsuki Seika
As I have lots of subscriptions the pop-up window is *really* slow and always has been since the new UI (same thing for amending friends lists). :-( I like the feature though, so I could make a new friends list of my most recommended users and use that each time for each user?
- Kol Tregaskes
"Remember: I blame FriendFeed for this, and Robert Scoble, Steve Rubell, Dave Winer, and all the rest of the puppets and ex-Techcrunch analysts who, by appearing to rationally debate the pluses and minuses of FriendFeed versus Twitter, suggest FriendFeed even exists in the absence of Twitter. Nik Cubrilovic doesn’t help either with his cogent (except for the Rails part) analysis of Twitter’s scaling problems. Nowhere in this debate (most of it mercifully hidden forever behind the FriendFeed black hole where conversations go to die) was there a word spoken about the fatal Track bug until Jack hit the Off switch. Now, in the cool clarity of no pulse whatsoever can we begin to rationally approach a solution. Forgetting that Hillary has shown no indication of processing the similar lack of pulse in her White House aspirations, let’s put the blame for all this squarely on the parasite API suckers and their dark master FriendFeed. Good."
- Paul Buchheit
I accuse my parents (a little MST3K humor)
- Mark Dykeman
My guess is that a good deal of folks who are otherwise technology experts haven't yet mastered the "Hide" option, and seeing Twitter in FriendFeed makes them feel it's simply an echo chamber for Twitter. Hiding Twitter, and/or utilizing the many other sources that are not Twitter here in FriendFeed makes it more valuable.
- Louis Gray
Someone pass around what Steve Gillmor is smoking. That is some heavy stuff he's got in his stash. I think I counted 10 words he seriously made up for that post. And why is friendfeed to blame for the XMPP/Jabber shutdown?
- Mark Trapp
WTF? This guy reminds me of Gary Busey, but angrier, if that's even possible.
- April Buchheit
This article simply doesn't make any sense. Please reword for clarity.
- Eric Florenzano
I was afraid when I saw "?" there. And now...no comment... :S
- Erhan Erdoğan
Is he kidding? I hope he's kidding. FriendFeed exists with or without twitter. In fact, I would love to see twitter removed from FriendFeed altogether. Guaranteed there would still be plenty of conversations revolving around the links shared, the pictures posted, etc.
- EricaJoy
I don't follow Twitter at all on FriendFeed. I find it somewhat ironic that one of Steve G's big passions was (is?) "Attention Metadata" and FriendFeed via likes, comments, etc is actually a service that makes great use of attention metadata!
- Robert Seidman
I enjoy that this Friendfeed post has more comments than his post on TechCrunch.
- Mark Trapp
This is the most buzzword-laden web 2.0 rant I have ever read. It's like he is making words up to describe stuff every other paragraph or so. And.. what's this jab at Clinton in the middle? How random.
- Phil Glockner
FriendFeed direct posts are really similar to Twitter in my mind.
- Hutch Carpenter
@Paul can you share the percentage of FF users that hide twitter posts?
- EricaJoy
Gillmor refuses to realize that the comment feature of FriendFeed does indeed add value that Twitter lacks. That's probably the key reason why I MOVED MY conversations to FriendFeed! Also, the sharing feature is the reason why I like FriendFeed! IF I merely wanted the 'stream of consciousness' of Twitter, I would just use Twitter! I think that FriendFeed 'exposes' the 'chinks in Twitter's armor'
- Thomas Ho
from fftogo
I think that Mark Trapp's observation is 'priceless'
- Thomas Ho
from fftogo
It sounds like Gillmor hasn't given FriendFeed nearly enough time if he thinks it's only "Twitter, but slower". I have a great time on here with Twitter hidden half of the time. If anything, let's blame Twitter for so much noise and/or so much conversation due to their issues
- Andrew Dobrow
FriendFeed can definitely make it without Twitter...so many conversations occur without Twitter being involved at all.
- Chris Rossini
That... made no sense to me. Still dazed from the insanity of it all. I see more conversations here on links and such than on tweets. And really, why is FriendFeed to blame for the Jabber shutdown? Seriously!
- dgw
This whole article was most undirectional article, I have read in recent times. I read it twice, and can't make out, what he want to say.
- Varun Mahajan
Adam, same here. I personally find the vast majority of twitter messages to be extremely boring and of no use to me.
- Aviv
Where are these "siloed conversation spamyards" to which he refers? You could say that about any chat system (if I understand his rather obtuse meaning) and FF discussions are quite cogent and open. (And seem especially so if you've ever spent any time in the Digg comments.)
- Nicķ
I usually keep the Twitter FF feed open. FF is definitely NOT the only app pulling on Twitter's API. Hundreds of sites, clients, etc?. Twitter had (maybe has) time to distinguish itself. Just 'come clean' with regular community updates. (PR time?) So far it's been lame. In the meantime, there's no doubt Friendfeed will continue to increase it's pull. Twitter put the API out there. THEY need to deal with the results, whether they were ready or not
- Charlie Anzman
FriendFeed is what you put in to it. If you add all your Twitter friends and nobody else, FriendFeed will appear to be Twitter with siloed conversations, but in that case that's exactly what you asked for. If you don't add a thousand people as friends and convince a thousand people to follow you then you won't see any of this 'spam graveyard' Steve talks about. You get what you ask for, and irrelevance is what you get if you add irrelevant friends.
- Kevin Fox
It's also worth noting how much FriendFeed thrived when Twitter had its difficulties this week. That would seem to put a hole in the argument that FriendFeed is primarily a downstream service to Twitter.
- Kevin Fox
OK friendfeed is NOT twitter. Its something else, and I like both. (sticks out tongue)...via feedalizr
- Photo Larry
He shouldn't drink before writing for TechCrunch

man, I honestly care jack shit about what people post on Twitter, but I find FF incredibly useful. Gillmor is seriously off his rocker with this post (which is the least legible I've seen on TC in a long time).

- Jeroen De Miranda
After going through the documentation and playing around with some feeds, I love the fact that you can now see the subscriber lists of people who have their feeds set to private as long as you are subscribed to them and authenticate (mimicking the main site functionality). One thing that's absent is a discussion of Direct Messages. Do they show up in feeds if you authenticate? How do we find just direct messages?
- Mark Trapp
Mark: direct messages are accessed using the feed ID "filter/direct". Read more about feed IDs at http://friendfeed.com/api.... Also direct messages appear in the "home" feed.
- Benjamin Golub
Benjamin: ahhh, I see it now. I missed it when skimming that list over. Thanks!
- Mark Trapp
Can you post the wget version of the command line?
- Gabe
Gabe: wget --user=bgolub --password=passwd --post-file=MyPhoto.jpg http://friendfeed-api.com/v2... should work. In theory. Edit: nope. I'm not sure it's possible to do with wget.
- Mark Trapp
Gabe: wget doesn't support multipart forms as a design decision. If you post a file, FriendFeed returns a 404, and if you post data, the query is too long for wget to handle.
- Mark Trapp
Good work, look forward to seeing what developers can create
- Joe Dawson
Woowoo, bgolub's password is “passwd” ;-)
- Amit Patel
Amit: I wonder how many people tested that :)
- Benjamin Golub
Thanks to bgolub posting his password, I now have all of FriendFeed's secret documents about notorious users, useless metrics, Justin Timberlake's promoting FF on Oprah's show, hiring Colbert as a spokesperson, Ev Williams being just a “distraction”. TechCrunch is going to love this! ;)

even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test)

Happy Happy Birthday, Louis dear, Happy days will come to you all year. If I had one wish, then it would be, a Happy Happy Birthday to you from me.

a few days before my birthday, i changed my FB profile to not show it for just that reason. hope you're having a good one
- Imabug
happy birthday in this thread too :) i agree, facebook broadcasts birthdays almost too much... it gets from nice to... annoying... if you have too many people on your list, and i am slowly getting there
- Iphigenie
See now, I think leaving a birthday greeting on an old friend's Facebook wall is a great way to restart the conversation. Just because I haven't seen you in person or sent you loads of 1,000 word emails in the last year doesn't mean that I haven't thought about you, laughed at your status updates, or stalked you via your photo albums...
- Lisa | #TeamMonique
Very good point Lisa - And I must say, I would hesitate to say much on your facebook profile, Louis, I'd think it would make a claim to more familiarity than we have... except perhaps a birthday wish... --off to leave one-- (edit: never mind, i never even connected, for the very same "it would be presuming" reason)
- Iphigenie
no idea why Facebook continues to send email notifications even though I opted out and keep opting out...

I suppose I could have, you know, after ten years at my job, just kind of plodded along...I'll have to figure out why I bothered to go back to school for myself.
- Derrick
Some people who drop out of high school say it's one of the biggest regrets of their lives. I think it's admirable for someone to want to feel better about themselves and correct that past mistake, even if it changes nothing in their lives. They're doing it for themselves, which is very important and relevant. We never reach an age where education becomes unnecessary. Go D's neighbor!
- Trish R
Trish, she's awesome. Like a lot of people here in NOLA, she's been awesome, inviting, accepting, has brought over plates of bbq and beer and wants to start working with the elderly after taking care of her parents who've recently passed away. I wish her the best.
- Derrick
Well tell her a stranger from east Texas thinks she is awesome, too!
- Trish R
I will pass that message along, Trish. :)
- Derrick
It is never too late to pursue education, at any level. You can tell her she has a librarian in Minnesota rooting for her.
- maʀtha
If she dropped out 30 years ago she's only in her mid-40's. That's plenty of time to enjoy the satisfaction of a high school education and maybe even go on to get a good job.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
That's awesome, martha. My neighbor is 54 so maybe it's been 40 years? She wants to become a home health aid after helping her parents in their elderly years. Getting her GED is the first step. She literally has the whole street encouraging her.
- Derrick

FriendFeed, if done right, could easily replace Tweetdeck
- Susan Beebe
I think the "Like" button could act as a retweet button. It can already push likes to Twitter. It just needs to follow the "stranded" RT format.
- Pat Hawks
Liked is similar, but takes up too many characters and is less known by general public
- Susan Beebe
@Susan that's what I mean. If I "Like" something here, FF should just push it to my Twitter status in the form "RT @whomever [Original message]..."
- Pat Hawks
Seems to me it'd make sense so have *Twitter* entries go back over to Twitter with RT rather than Liked... maybe as an option... but it makes no sense to me to "retweet" stuff that wasn't a "tweet" in the first place.
- Ken Sheppardson
Pat - Exactly! But I also want a "RT" button as I don't always "like" a post... sorry :)
- Susan Beebe
@Ken Right. I think the system could be smart enough to figure out the difference.
- Pat Hawks
It just seems that the "Like" paradigm is quite similar to the RT paradigm on Twitter
- Pat Hawks
Only if its originally a tweet. But then again, you may not want to RT that item. Too many RT's can be spam, sort of.
- Roberto Bonini
Yes, I should have clarified that (I thougtht that was an obvious requirement) - yes RT for items originating from twitter - afterall we're talking re-TWEET right?
- Susan Beebe
"Like" should retweet. I've been saying it for a good long time now, that liking a tweet in FF should do a proper RT rather than the standard "Liked X" that FF pushes to Twitter.
- Chris Charabaruk
Keeping you and Kristine in my thoughts and prayers.
