I don't agree with the notion that life on Earth originated on Mars (or any other planet). I think it started and evolved from chemical reactions right here. Still, love this graphic out of context.

there is still a chance that it was carried here from other sources (comets from other systems etc). The only thing we can say is that it's here :)

"The Way of the Surfer by Drew Kampion Beauty's Edge The beach is a tidal zone, a ragged and chaotic borderland where the interplay of planetary and cosmic forces is perhaps most clearly revealed. As an expression of those dynamics, the surf is beauty's edge, an eternal dialogue between utterly different yet complementary worlds. Out on the ragged edges of islands and continents, where whump of wave and surge of sea wears monuments into sand, someone is always watching. They're out there now, following twisted, sodden trails down to the shore. They're leaping from slick boulders into icy brine ... clawing over thundering cornices into the torquing pits of powerful pulses ... gliding like gulls across the smooth, glassy slopes of silently advancing swells. Those surfers, those riders of waves. Survival out here is always a question of balance. The principle is expressed in the equation "Nature = God" carved into the sandstone above Malibu by Tom Blake. He enlivened the essential...

"I have been checking in on the tweets with the #haikuchallenge tag and I really appreciate the support from all of you. It is a wee bit humbling to know that I have had such an impact on people. Not as humbling as showing up to work accidentally naked, but quite humbling nevertheless. I still do not know why my Twitter account was suspended. I have not heard back from Twitter Support in response to my “ticket” querying the suspension. I hope to hear something on Monday so that things can be resolved. I have observed a couple of tweets wondering who can vouch that the Haiku Challenge Daily Blog and/or #haikuchallenge are not some kind of scam. I suppose it is okay to be skeptical about things in this age of phishing and malware and such. I am pretty sure, though, there are easier ways to concoct a scam than coming up with the idea for a daily haiku group through social networking. Perhaps I have been hacked without knowing it. It puzzles me. I will continue to post the daily...

So, while my Twitter account is under suspension (I fervently hope for its return), I can be followed/visited at www.getbaffled.com and www.baffled.posterous.com... That is all.
Ummm. One time, I ran out of candy...And the little trick-or-treaters came to my door and I had some Easter eggs just laying around (chocolate doesn't go bad, right?)...so I handed out some Easter eggs. But, they were good quality Easter Eggs. Better than say, an apple. I used to get crappy apples, which I had to throw out in case they had a razor in them!

That's fair enough! Never thought of it as the emergency backup... We had to resort to raisins last night, and I always fear for our front porch when we have to do that... ;)

I need advice. My son and this little boy in his soccer team are always fighting. Today, after the game, the little boy hit him, and so my son hit him back. The little boy starts bawling and saying that my son punched him (never revealing that he hit him).
The mother of the little boy starts screaming at the top of her lungs, "Why did you HIT HIM!" I asked my son, "Did the boy hit you?!" He said yes. I yelled back at her. "Your son hit him as well, so they are both at fault!" She finally shut up.
- Shevonne
I honestly don't know how to handle situations like this. I wanted to punch her, but I don't want my kids thinking violence is the way to handle things. What should I do if this happens again?
- Shevonne
just what you did. and then make them apologize to each other.
- tiffany
Your boy did right - as long as he didn't start anything he did the right thing. That other boy isn't likely to hit your son again. The best is when other people see it happen so the other parents can say anything.
- Chrimmus Tad
I think that she was in the wrong, what was she thinking screaming at you or your son?
- Andrizzle Gizzle
Yeah - I think you did the right thing. I suggest getting your son into martial arts. How old is he?
- Chrimmus Tad
@Tad I tried that, but he didn't want to to do it. I worry cause my son seems to always get into some kind of fight. We were all girls, so I don't know if this is normal with boys.
- Shevonne
It's fairly normal for boys to be aggressive. I'm one for having the boy defend himself. However I think you and the other mother should sit down and find out what's at root here.
- MASTER OF THE OBVIOUS
Yes - it's normal with boys. Does his father live with you guys? Boys at that age need a good male role model.
- Chrimmus Tad
Thank you, Andrea. That woman had NO right raising her voice at your son.
- Admiral Anika
@Barry I tried to find her after the game to talk to her calmly, but she had already left. I might try during Wednesday's practice. @Tad His father only sees them every other weekend, and because of soccer, it has turned into only Saturday afternoon til Sunday afternoon. He really doesn't have any male role models.
- Shevonne
Shevonne, I'm kind of prejudiced since I help teach martial arts to kids, but I'd keep trying to get him involved. It's a great way for a kid to learn self-discipline and self defense - both things young boys really need. I'd also say he really needs a man in his life, but you probably already know that. :) That's not something easy to fix.
- Chrimmus Tad
I really, REALLY want him to do martial arts, but when I tried, he wouldn't even participate. It's something that bugs me about my kids. They are so stubborn, they will refuse to do something. They probably got that from both their dad and me. The school here was like $150 down payment plus $150 a month. I didn't want to spend so much money when he was just going to sit there and not do anything. Maybe if it's an after school program, and I am not there with him, do you think that would work?
- Shevonne
How old is your son? $150/month is insane for good martial arts. Our program is only $50/month. Avynn was at the best damned karate dojo in Scottsdale and that was $95/month. Finding a good dojo is tough. What metro area are you in? I'll do some looking and see if I can find you an aikido dojo with a kids program. :)
- Chrimmus Tad
And the man thing. I know he needs a man in his life. There are only women in the family, living in the states. My dad is around, but he is always hunting, gym, etc. It's one of the reasons I put him in the cub scouts and soccer, so he is around other boys and not just be around his sister and me. Cebastian is eight year old. I live in the DC area, Fairfax area. Thanks so much! I am going to call around to see if there are any that do after-school pickup from his school.
- Shevonne
Shevonne - I'm going to ask my sensei if he knows any good dojos up there. I'll do my best to find you something. 8 is the perfect age to start Aikido.
- Chrimmus Tad
Shevonne - hard as it may be I still think the grownups need to try and come together on this. At the very least the boy's mother should tell him to leave your son alone as you could offer that you'll do to yours (even though the other boy is the instigator). I'm not beyond telling another kid to leave mine alone but that seems to get better acceptance if it comes from a man (is that...

That is so hard. My boys have been on the receiving end and the giving end. Interestingly, I have never had to deal with a parent like that woman, most parents accept their kid's role in it or are understanding about my kid's role. I keep stressing the right way to handle things is to use words, not fists, whether the other kid is the aggressor or mine is. Maybe if I keep saying it, it will be so. Have facilitated playdates so that they could get to know each other in a more neutral setting.
- Martha
Shevonne - how far away is this dojo? http://www.capitalaikikai.org/ My sensei says " The main instrutor there is Clyde Takeguchi. Very nice guy... and very good aikido." If it's too far away, I'd suggest sending him an email and tell him where you live and ask if he can suggest any nearby dojo, aikido or not. In my opinion you should stick with very traditional Japanese-stye dojos - karate or Aikido. Either way Sensei Takeguchi may be able to help. :)
- Chrimmus Tad
I will email/call him on Monday to see if he can give me any recommendations. Thank you 100 times!
- Shevonne
Also - I just noticed he has a link full of a bunch of Affiliated dojos. I think they're all the same style as what we do. Aikido is perfect for kids because it's mostly just self-defense. We don't teach how to kill other people, but rather how to neutralize attacks. :) That said, I think Japanese style karate is perfect. Whatever you do, don't put him in a MMA school.
- Chrimmus Tad
@Martha I think this woman is just a very high strung individual. At practice, I heard her screaming at her daughter, and I think it hurt my ears more because she has a very shrilly voice. I will talk to her on Wednesday to see if we can get these boys to stop fighting.
- Shevonne
Working together is the best answer, if you can get her on board.
- Martha
Isn't youth soccer great?!?! Only hockey rivals it for its ability to cause parents to go berserk in public, in front of other parents and children...

if no scarface, i dont count this list credible :)
- ugurarcan
Payback is on the list but not Scarface, things are not right in the world.
- Kim Landwehr
True, the omission of Scarface is problematic, but other great gangster films are missing too, like The Long Good Friday, The Krays, Gangster No.1 and Sexy Beast.
- Baffled
There are 2 jokes on this list: Snatch and The Departed. Okay, at least the latter deserves a spot, but NOT above Pulp Fiction (!). And Snatch? Doesn't deserve to be in the top 20, imo.
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Scarface was a gangster movie? I always felt it was more of a drug flick, not exactly a gangster film, it had fighting drug cartels in it but I don't think that contributes enough to call it a gangster flick. Update: After reviewing the list it should definitely be in there, it looks like they were stretching to get 20 gangster films.
- Jimminy Fuller
I found 2 of the 20 as netflix instant movies: Once Upon a Time in America and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Thats funny its the two movies with the longest titles. LoL I tried watching OUATIA but the movie is almost 4 hours long. I feel asleep halfway through it. Is it worth watching completely? I love LSATSB.

"General Motors Co. plans to cease putting its corporate "GM" logo on the side of its vehicles in the coming model years following decision by the company's management team to put more emphasis on individual brands instead of the parent company. GM spokesman Terry Rhadigan said the decision to remove the logo – known as the GM "Mark of Excellence" – was made earlier in the month by GM's newly-formed executive committee. Mr. Rhadigan said the logos will be "gradually" phased out starting in the 2010 model year. The auto maker earlier in the year filed bankruptcy protection and emerged quickly thanks to a $50 billion funding commitment from the U.S. government. GM has in the past year decided to sell or kill four of the eight brands, including Hummer, Pontiac, Saab and Saturn. The remaining brands are Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC. The strategy to more acutely focus marketing efforts on individual vehicle brands, while deemphasizing their connection to GM, is being spearheaded by...

I always thought the little GM badge took away from the individual brands. It especially looked ugly on the Corvette. It was like GM saying that badge was more important than the work done to build a car that looked visually pleasing.
- Al Stevens
I totally agree Al. I never understood why they made that move, it seemed like they assumed people wouldn't buy a vehicle unless it was made by GM.
- Kenton
I still don't understand GM's reasons for keeping the brands it did. Cadillac (luxury) and Chevy (mass mkt. economy) I get. But why Buick over Pontiac? Would have made more sense to turn Pontiac into a real performance brand. Buick is synonymous with "stodgy" and near-luxury models could be sold under the Caddy umbrella. Or they could have kept Saturn and made that their small car brand. In short, GM continues to suck.
- Kevin Pedraja
So the biggest, most important strategic business decision made by the newly formed (and presumably well-compensated) General Motors executive committee is to remove the GM logo from the sides of its vehicles. Not only that, because this isn't the sort of thing one rushes into, the logo removal will be phased in "gradually" beginning in the 2010 model year. What's the ballpark figure on how much it cost the executive committee to obtain MBA degrees?
- Baffled
@Kevin Have you ever been to a retirement community in Florida? Tan Buicks everywhere.
- Matt
Matt, that's exactly my point. How often do old people buy cars? It's not a huge market and keeping an entire division devoted to selling to them dilutes the overall brand. And if Buicks sell well in China, great, but they could easily keep the brand alive there by just re-badging cars from another division.
- Kevin Pedraja
Kevin, my comment was sort of tongue in cheek. I agree that the Buick nameplate is pretty much worthless, but I would argue that it is probably more valuable than Pontiac. Buick at least has a niche market. Pontiac has been foundering for years, unsuccessfully trying to reinvent its image with crummy new models. I honestly don't know why anyone would seriously consider buying a Pontiac. I get why old people like Buicks (they're big and you can strap a Rascal to the bumper).
- Matt
As for Saturn, there's just too much overlap with Chevy models at similar price points. Frankly I think it would have made sense to just keep Chevy (mass mkt), Cadillac (luxury), and GMC (trucks/SUVs), unless the Chinese market is really that huge a deal as one commenter already pointed out.
