I've noticed certain personalities not getting the "respect they deserve" on FF. It's quite levelling, and you often have to prove yourself all over again (if that's what you want out of it)
i'm guessing "certain personalities" is a euphemism for "whiny a** mother you-know-whats who seek too much validation from social networking sites"
- tiffany
Too true, Anna. I have to keep reminding people that I am not a bunneh.
- Steven Perez
YOU SEE WHAT I HAVE TO PUT UP WITH?!? *SOB*
- Steven Perez
from IM
yeah, like respect in other realms of the internet
- anna sauce
I just want to offer my respect and admiration to Rodfather, on this, the day of his daughter's wedding...
- Morgan Haley
I'm a non-personality outside of FF and I get a bit... Well, I guess I feel 'put down' when people come into FF and comment on how many non-personas are popular here. It's like they want to see the same people and the same things on every service.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I'm pretty much a non personality anywhere outside of my house. Sometimes even inside the house. But even I know that Steven Perez IS A BUNNEH!!!!
- Jim Hearts FF
Ever since I saw that video of your jet engine coffee machine.
- mikepk
True. "What have you done for me today?" is how people approach these things.
- Robert Scoble
They should just get that "I'm very big on Twitter" t-shirt and STFU.
- John Craft
I've said this before, but, I don't care how much influence, power, money, etc you have. If you're an asshole, I'm not following.
- Rodfather
The Rodfather has spoken. So let it be written. So let it be done.
- Morgan Haley
+1 Rodfather; often I don't know the "famous" personalities on Friend Feed for what they do outside of FF. If they engage thoroughly (like Robert Scoble), I come to appreciate their depth of knowledge, and interesting stuff. If they don't participate, or share interesting things, I usually just ignore them.
- Jennifer Dittrich
Personally, I blame the new format....too fast and twittery. people tweeting stuff like 'i only used 3 sheets of toilet paper to wipe today. yay me'....actually, that would be funny....nevermind
- Morgan Haley
I agree with Jennifer. I don't think it's a "respect" thing, but more of a participation thing.
- Glenn Trtanj
Morgan: if you see that kind of stuff you need to do what I'm doing. Build a new list of people who only add value to your life. I have several different lists where I watch different groups for different reasons. The small ones are my favorite -- by far -- because I only put people who put a lot of signal into their feeds and very little noise.
- Robert Scoble
Where is Rodney Dangerfield when you need him....(loosen's tie)
- Mike Nencetti
I still don't understand what this thread is about but I think that's probably okay.
- Jason Toney
Question is, do these "certain personalities" deserve the respect? A lot of the Twitter "celebreties" are really just full of themselves with their follower counts and get off on people seeing their tweets without actually interacting/responding to the bulk of the people following them. Social networks are not one-way streets. If you want people to take you seriously and respect you, you need to interact back with them. Now, Twitter kind of shields these "celebs" because it is such an awful medium for interactive communication. Whereas FriendFeed has real threading and is not inhibited by a legacy character limit. So the celebs can't hide behind "oh I didn't see it" excuses like they can on Twitter.
- Christopher A. Wichura
Anna, Morgan was quoting The Godfather. I don't have a daughter :D
- Rodfather
Christopher: exactly. You earn your respect. There are times, though, when it becomes blood sport. I saw that when Arrington and Laporte went at it. They apologized to each other but their fans went at it for a couple of days. It's not fun, especially if one audience is beating up on another. But life does go on (I've been at the bottom of a few of these piles and they always go away eventually).
- Robert Scoble
my bad. I really do have a sense of humor and don't take all things literally, really.
- anna sauce
I think it's my reaction to the bubble of SF, where you can't swing a cat without running into an internet celebrity. The charm of FF is that I've met these interesting personalities that aren't part of the bubble (formed from dot-com, mainly when old-school F2F networking was king)
- anna sauce
Oh and I also met them without going to burning man!
- anna sauce
I don't want to cast myself as a bitter hater, b/c I have some good friends part of the digerati. It's just a mixed bag.
- anna sauce
It's ok, Anna, I'm beginning to give myself the "respect I deserve".. problem is: I don't want to prove myself ;-)
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
Yeah I don't come here, or contribute to FF, to get some kind of fan base. I simply enjoy meeting people on here- digerati and non-digerati alike.
- anna sauce
+100 anna. I have made friends here. Sure, I follow some of the of the a-listers, but that's kind of peripheral to everything else I enjoy here.
- Jason Huebel
If you see something good .. throw a 'bump' at it ?
