We have a rolling 24-hour limit for the number and size of files you can upload, but you probably shouldn't hit it unless you are sharing really big stuff.
- Bret Taylor
Are the files public when accessed via direct link? Or do they require authentication?
- Mark Trapp
Any other files that don't work with it?
- Kol Tregaskes
What's the file attachment size limit?
- imabonehead
Kol: i assume you can attach video? it just won't play in-line? or did i misinterpret that?
- Frankie Warren
@imabonehead, from Bret's comment above: "We have a rolling 24-hour limit for the number and size of files you can upload, but you probably shouldn't hit it unless you are sharing really big stuff."
- Dan Hsiao
I tried it with both a txt and a rar file but neither seemed to work (the message was posted without a file attached). [Update: works now for me]
- Philipp Lenssen
Gonna give a big W00T!! to this before I even read the whole thing...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Now all I need is a number where I can call and leave a VM that gets changed into an audio file, and I can get rid of drop.io for good! Yeah, we're never happy are we? Sorry....
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
All we need now is a calendaring system and support for source code.
- imabonehead
mp3 sharing works in FriendFeed? Just when I'm thinking to share some 'musiclets' from time to time via Tumblr! mhh.. interesting, really!
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
this is awesome, i was literally just trying to do this last night on one of our team feeds and had to post links to published google docs instead. going to try it out now. it's like they read my mind.
- Mike Elliott
Kol...we use Drop.io all the time here at my office. This would be great as it is supremely simpler. But approved file types and sizes needs to be understood.
- JA Castillo
Mitch, that would be an option, but I can only imagine the opportunity for the wrong voice file to go to the wronge feed...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
And Akiva is right...where do we start donating?!
- JA Castillo
If we had basic HTML support for first comments on FF, it could almost be used for mail (at least for forwarding and reading mail to and on it).
- Kol Tregaskes
JA, a list of supported file types, limits and sizes is needed... please. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
This will go a long way in convincing some of my Yahoo Groups to move to FF. Although we must have a list of file types supported, retention times and also if there is a max number of d/l's.
- Gil Francisco III
This is awesome but I'm also concerned about the type of people this might bring to the FF community.
- Johnny
Gil, I'm seriously considering moving my Y!Groups list members from there to FF.
- Kol Tregaskes
This is one of those features that people don't complain about even though they didn't ask the community prior to launching ;)

Dare I ask about Boobies.jpg.virus.exe? - Oops Casey says they are virus scanned

Jannifer: RIAA and MPAA, specifically. Say someone shares a copyrighted song or something...RIAA gets cranky.

.m4a files sent from the iPhone's Voice Memos feature aren't given a player but are making it through the mail to FF feature. Any support for a player coming down the line?
- Christopher Harley
How about .zip s that are password-protected? Reject I hope... (edit) .zip not supported at all, I gather, good!
- Richard pancakhaus Walker
yeah search by filetype absolutely! filetype:pdf, filetype:mp3, filetype:zip, filetype:doc etc.
- Nathan Chase
Christoper: (via Bret) "Unfortunately we only can play back MP3s at this point. The iPhone voice memos are in M4A (AAC), so we really want to support them, but it is a bit more difficult with Flash and our media setup at the moment."
- Ross Miller
I'm not sure that I'm going to use that feature (I rarely share docs over the internet that weren't created in Zoho or GDocs, anyway), but still it looks pretty neato.
- Miss Elle
Bret, do you have any restrictions to protect against music filesharers etc so you do not become an RIAA target?
- Travis Koger
@ Travis: I was just wondering the same.
- Brian Chang
Bret Taylor, a friend of mine uploaded 1 mp3 and it disappeared. Now he can't upload any mp3 file, seeing a [The "" file type is not supported]. Broken message?
- Jason Nunnelley
"You can only upload 3 audio files every day. Please try again later." Too bad because I was really just trying to see what files worked. .wav aint one of them. No audio notes from Evernote, iPhone, iProRecorder. I soooo want to love this but It's not doing what I need it to do. This feature needs to support some kind of multi photo post with a recording appended to the message. That should be right out of the box. Video needs to come right behind it. Music is cool but citizen journalism is even cooler.
- Christopher Harley
I haven't tested this but, how exactly are you determining audio file types, just using the file extension. If so there is a work around with a simple file rename, an example would be if you change an .mp3 to a .pdf and let people rename it once it becomes local on their machine. EDIT: This workaround would also allow video to be transferred.
- Jimminy Fuller
Maybe I don't know enough, but doesn't this kind of open the door to slipping malicious code to unsuspecting users?
- Fleagle
this is the best thing I know this morning when I open my eyes, well done!
- K.D.
Fleagle: It is possible that someone would do that but FriendFeed is fairly well self monitored. It is still a small group of people in comparison to other networks.
- Jimminy Fuller
Glad for this feature, though perhaps close partnership with Box.net or similar could keep FF storage costs better contained? Not criticizing, just hoping Core Team doesn't get distracted by extending (and babysitting) commodity services. Keep up the great work!
- michael silverton
So we can setup private groups and share questionable files ? :)
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
That's pretty much what I was saying, Ahsan. I did one earlier as a test to prove my point, (NOTE: it is a clean file, direct from Revision 3) at http://friendfeed.com/jimminy...
- Jimminy Fuller
Hmmm @Ryo, good catch, posting directly from Android to FF your voice messages, would be cool!

Can we tell the lawyers that they "won" and give them all the money? Then start over with a new set of I.P. laws and a new currency? Pretty please?

Seems like a good step in the right direction indeed the concerns are founded based on previous experiences but it is a good start.

Is it possible to set it up as part of the feed like a podcast?

Excellento - inline playing of mp3 files at last - this will be dangerous. But is there are limit??

embedding mp3's is just fine when it works .. I've been trying to get a podcast rss feed I have setup imported for the past 8 hours straight only to find out that each time it's not importing squat.

.....why are there like 8 jars of peanut butter and like... ONE jar of jelly? BIZARRE
- Mona Nomura
Mona: Perhaps there are more varieties of Peanut Butter (Creamy, Chunky, Organic, etc), but everyone only likes Strawberry jelly.
- Justin Korn
JK: but only one jar? I would fight people to get to it everyday... Dude, this is in Emeryville. We should SO go check it out
- Mona Nomura
It wouldn't be that hard for Facebook. They're tiny compared to Google's massive campus. They don't even need a cafeteria. They could just hook up a deal with the restaurant that's next to them on the bottom floor or any of the other eateries around them.

Mona: I'd be totally down to go check it out!

@Louis: but it's the THOUGHT that counts dude. @JK: I wonder if there're any FFers who work at Pixar... hmmmmmm

I worked next to the Pixar compound for 3 years. They have a lunch room, yet they kicked out one lunch spot and are still trying to get Semifreddi's to move. I like the movies, but it would have been nice (given their lunch room and roving cake cart) that they'd preserve lunch spots for the rest of us.

I find I'm using the on-page notes and highlighting. The Diigolet bookmarklet is fast and does a bunch of cool things, and everything gets sent to Delicious, anyway. Win.
- Chris Baskind
from IM
I jumped on the Diigo wagon once. Was great with all the things it does which delicious don't do. But after a while I realized that I only use the same features as delicious, and delicious is just faster, so I quit diigo... What is it about Diigo you think is so fantastic? Is it just the option to do more things, or do you actually use it to do more?
- Peter Efland
i agree. i do the same chris. i have all my diigo bookmarks copy to delicious, which i've taken out of my feed here. i also select which bookmaked diigo items i want to share here in my feed via the private/public feature. i find diigo to be more full featured with regard to its customizing and editing features as well as "easier" to search for items. works for me
- Cee Bee
It works for me too and I've been using Diigo's groups, used some existing groups and created some so that additionally to tags I categorise bookmarks into different groups. The bookmarklet makes it easy to do that. I also get a daily email or subscribe to the RSS feed of groups I'm particularly interested in.
- M F
I have mostly switched to Diigo from Delicious for all the reasons mentioned. I've noticed, however, that Friendfeed doesn't pick up Diigo descriptions. I wish it did.
- Sean McBride
Damn, you post this on Saturday and come Monday the site falls apart! LOL I've gotten 500 errors 3 times tonight form them and haven't been able to get to my bookmarks for at least the last 2 hours. Hopefully this will pass.

@Bartek, hey that's great! Glad to hear it helped.

Yeah, this is VERY useful on the side of the fridge. I had it up in my old place and used it often.

I need to put this on my fridge; I am terrible at knowing when stuff goes bad

FOR THE LAST TIME! Mayonnaise = MIRACLE WHIP! THEY ARE THE EXACT SAME THING!
- Michael Forian
I am SO with you, Aaron. I just go by sight / smell. Worst case scenario - I get the runs. Boo Hoo. be back later ppl, I'm actually working today, wow.
- Mona Nomura
Fantastic colors... You find the best stuff Mona!
- Mitchell Tsai
um michael, no, they're not really... they taste different. maybe it's just the flavoring. check the ingredients. mayonnaise is eggy, miracle whip is sweeter
- Kamilah Gill
Michael Forian: BITE YOUR TONGUE! Miracle Whip has that zesty thing going on. Nasty. :-| REAL MAYO = deliciousness and all things good.
- Lisa L. Seifert
Aaron, I have another list on my fridge already of when things go bad. I found that years ago. not as fancy as this, and it's for all foods, not just sauces.
- Kamilah Gill
Thanks, Kamilah! Anyone wanna' make it purty?
- Lisa L. Seifert
Good to know that special sauce lasts 2 months...
- John Ford
Mayo is NOT EQUAL TO MIRACLE WHIP!!! (I gather caps are needed to join that particular discussion). Miracle Whip has a lot more sugar in it. And, sorry, it is vomitus. Love the chart, Mona. Where oh where do you find this stuff?
- Laura Norvig
Careful with that syntax, Laura! I believe you meant to yell, "MIRACLE WHIP IS NOT EQUAL TO MAYO!" ;-)

I dunno. I've always found ET a bit boring. *ducks*

Totoro is so, so good! I was surprised that my daughter is completely indifferent to Star Wars - she might be too young for it right now, so we'll be trying again next summer. I loathed ET when I was young, so she hasn't watched that yet.

"After what seems to be years (okay, decades) of rumors and stories, a third Ghostbusters film is in the works, this according to The Hollywood Reporter. As the trade reports, the film will be something that’s become popular with other franchises such as Batman, James Bond, and most recently Superman – that is, a reboot. Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, writer/producers of NBC’s The Office have signed on to write the film for Sony. Reportedly, the new version will restart the franchise (both in the film world and for Sony), with possible involvement from the original cast members, though the original cast would not be in major roles in the new film."

Insta-liked for Ghostbusters reference, then found out it was going to be a remake. You can't remake/reboot Ghostbusters! What's the sodding point? It's close to perfection.

Actually, a significant number of these I didn't do until AFTER I had kids. And a lot of these, I would never do - before OR after kids. ;)

did most of em, gonna do a few more despite having a new kid now
- adolfo foronda
Am curiously attracted to such lists, maybe because they remind me to keep pushing forward with some of these/similar items with a "carpe diem" attitude, maybe because they offer affirmation when I nod my head "done" for so many of the items. Here's another fun list from 4 guys that roadtripped on a bus along the US West Coast last year and caused a bit of a media stir of support in their pursuits (and encouraged others to pursue their dreams/wishes): http://www.theburiedlife.com/list...

I went skydiving a couple week ago. It's fun, but I wasn't overly impressed.

It's not a big adrenaline rush like you'd think. It's more like swimming than falling, plus on a tandem you're strapped to an experienced instructor. The only adrenaline rush you'd get really is fear/nervousness if you have any. I'd recommend going, some people fall in love with it. I'll get licensed one day, but I'm not in a big hurry. Paragliding might be more my speed, since the landing approach was the most fun, second was the freefall part.
- xero
xero, have u bunjee jumped? How does that compare?
- Zee.
You know, a lot of those things in your list you can just as easily do after having kids. They're not high risk, nor massively time consuming. Some you can even share the learning experience with your family.
- xero
xero, agreed no doubt...it's not my list though btw, I just shared it.
- Zee.
I haven't bungee jumped, it's on my list though. It's supposed to feel more like falling and be a bit more of a rush. You generally don't have time to hit terminal velocity and there are objects close enough for you to recognize you're actually falling.

My high school freshmen English teacher had us write a letter to ourselves, and he would mail it ten years later. That was ten years ago. Can't wait to read what I wrote. He was my favorite teacher.
I was in 1st grade during the Bicentennial in 1976 and we made a time capsule. We opened it when we all graduated from high school, added more to it and sealed it up again, to be opened by our kids/grandkids in 2076.

I've looked up old Usenet posts that I wrote in the early 1980s. In fact, I'll be using one in a presentation that I'll be giving later this week. While the presentation focuses on law enforcement use of the Internet and other technologies, I threw a few general slides in there. The first shows the header for a Usenet post I wrote in 1982 about the then-new "Call of the West" album. The second shows the current Wall of Voodoo MySpace page. Just goes to show there is nothing new under the sun.

I just went through the process of adding friendfeed to my own site (holgr.com) last week and also found your site. It's a good starting point! Unfortunately the "default" options are pretty scarce and not really flexible. Fortunately - however - the API is so simple that you can create a nice embed yourself using the documentation.

The answer is totally different. The smoud (like smog but cloud-not-fog) cover is to protect the networks from pirate satellites that want to use their powerful telescopes to view and broadcast the Olympics live and for free.

In theory I'll agree with but in practice social media is where I consume a lot of my information. When marketing is done right it's just information and I can take it or leave it, but if it's not coming through the channels I use I'm never going to see it/get it. Do I want to see social media overrun with bad marketing and PR gimmicks? No I want to see marketing people get better.
- Michelle Jones
It's going to happen, because there's no way to escape from them. They'll infiltrate your friend networks just like they infiltrated your inbox, and the race of "who can shout their message loudest" will begin again. How many times today have you spread a marketing message without realizing it? Friend requests will become the new spam. How many people have been followed by a spammer on twitter?
- Mr. Gunn
Someone called "TheBioinformatician" with a blank profile linking only to a blank blog subscribed to my feed today. How many of you added him just based on his name and the fact that he's following you?
- Mr. Gunn
Yet here you are, on a social media platform. Of course, there's going to be marketing, how else will a certain type of people rise to the top?
- Vincent van Wylick
Thank God it's always more or less the same people rising to the top and we all know them all too well...
- Matthias Schwenk
Vincent, I don't think that's the kind of marketing Gina's talking about. Marketing your own skills and experiences is, as you point out, what's supposed to happen. Marketing of products and services that are not your own, but rather those of a company that you're being compensated to promote is what gets in the way of the kind of marketing that's supposed to happen. There is a clear, bright line that separates the two kinds of marketing that advertisers fail to respect.
- Mr. Gunn
In fact, exposing as many people as possible to "message X" is considered by them to be marketing of their skills and experiences. That's why the two can never peacefully co-exist.
- Mr. Gunn
Mr. Gunn, I don't follow anyone who doesn't update material themselves, or contribute meaningfully to friendfeed
- Deepak Singh
Actually, my post was sarcastic. I said "a certain type." Marketing is a commercial activity, invented to sell products and services. That relationship between company and (potential) consumers is fairly established. It's the "social" (which some call "people") marketing that is so unpleasant, imo, because you don't form relationships for relationship's sake, but for marketing's. It's even more invasive of your privacy than the other kind.
- Vincent van Wylick
So we're singing the same tune, then. Thanks to you both.
- Mr. Gunn
would conversational marketing be a better term. At least that might imply some effort to connect with us not just blast us
- Mark Scrimshire
I don't know if it would be better. The way I see it, social networks were designed primarily for the purpose of getting away from marketing. Would we need social networks if we could trust that any email entering our inbox came from someone we know and want to talk to, and if web searches weren't cluttered with irrelevance? OK, so they help with aggregation of activity, too, but that's only one of their functions. Filtering out marketing is certainly another.
- Mr. Gunn
