I see before me this tweet by someone who shall go unnamed: "I'm at TGI Friday's." How many people care? Directly below it is a tweet from Jay Rosen: "Dave Winer and I had a 40 min conversation today about the collapsed state of the news system, shifts in power, innovation http://is.gd/mpWM" Of course I clicked through -- major tweet. There is a problem is sifting through the trivial and useless tweets to get to the really valuable tweets. I suspect that Edwin Khodabakchian at Feedly could fix this problem.
- Sean McBride
People who personally know the person at Friday's care. Especially if they are looking for that person at that moment. I'm more likely to use Twitter as a status update for actual friends than as a notification for any fascinating conversations I've had. Most people don't get to associate with the likes of Dave Winer or Jay Rosen. Twitter needs Friends Lists.
- Rob Haas
Robert -- I appreciate that. But if you are tweeting mostly to your immediate small circle of friends, you are going to lose the opportunity to communicate to a global audience or field of experts in any given domain (unless, as you point out, you are a Mitch Kapor or David Pogue.)
- Sean McBride
Sean. You should try to take a look at @microplaza. I have not tried the service (because if it somehow competing with what we do) but I think that the center of focus of their design is to extract great links from twitter streams (which sound close to what you are looking for).
- Edwin Khodabakchian
Edwin: I've spent 10 minutes playing with MicroPlaza, and I am impressed. It doesn't appear to offer personalized ranking yet, but they are working on it. I just added them to my Twitter feeds. Looks like you may have some competition. :)
- Sean McBride
Competition makes working on a sunday a little less painful :-) Have a great week end!
- Edwin Khodabakchian
My modest proposal would be to make three kinds of tweets: chat/status, discussion topics, and responses to topic threads. One could turn the filter off / on for each.
- bill giltner
That's the beauty and the curse of twitter. "What are you doing now?" I'm familiar with both Dave W and Jay R but I wouldn't click through on that "shifts in power, innovation..." tweet. Not interested. Robert H was right, "People who personally know the person at Friday's care." I was hooked on twitter but now I stay exclusively on FF. More value and easier sifting here.
- BEX
BEX -- for me, there is far too much commentary to plow through on Friendfeed. I want the option to hide *all* commentary by default, and only open up the commentary of selected posts. The headers of posts could indicate the number of likes and comments in parentheses in list view.
- Sean McBride
More to come....
- Dieter Schwarz
- Dieter Schwarz
@Dieter Ich denke, dass Sie recht haben. Viele gute 'Presse' versuchen wir zu erreichen! ;o)
- Xavier Bartholome
Yeah, just turn it off. You'll be sealing yourself into a nice tight box, though :)
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I love that feature. But, yes, you can turn it off.
- Yolanda
you can also turn it off (well, hide at least) on a case by case basis. That way you get to judge each one of your friend's friends. - Judgy McJudgerson.
- Laura Norvig
By default I've disabled friend of friend & last.fm, that keeps things manageable
- Steven Cains
And I just love to get the info from FoF (= friends of friends). It's taking me to news I otherwise wouldn't pay attention to, wouldn't notice either. Besides that: it's probably worth looking at, because otherwise friends wouldn't 'like' it or comment on it. It's a great invention of FF.
- Ton Zijp
thanks, will turn it off to see if I miss it
- Loic Le Meur
Interesting that the people who say this usually are treating FriendFeed as a way to get messages out, but aren't participating in FriendFeed as much. I understand that in Loic's position, since he is CEO of Seesmic and probably wants to spend most of his participation time over on Seesmic instead of over here. To turn this feature off, just use the "Hide" feature. I personally LOVE finding new friends through this feature, though. Please keep liking your friends who you want me to see!
- Robert Scoble
FoF and the general feed overflow with time get kicked with the selective attention bias. In cognitive terms, it's the same when you're in a cocktail party and block all the other noises to listen to the interesting talk in your group. With time, we'll get used to FoF and learn to block what doesn't matter.
- Armando Alves
Who is Loic Le Meur, and why is Scoble sending me messages from him?
- Morgan Warstler
Robert, you know how much I love discovering new friends, please note I still have the autofollow on my twitter ON so I follow 10000+ people there... I am very active on Friendfeed this is why I am trying not to follow that many people here. To discover new content I use more Twitter, to get the content that is super important to me I use more FF. Two different choices. I am experimenting, this is clearly not perfect.
- Loic Le Meur
Morgan: funny. Loic Le Meur is CEO of Seesmic.
- Robert Scoble
Who is that Robert Scoble I keep getting noise from in my Friendfeed? :P
- Loic Le Meur
You can say that agin. I really don't like that little feature. Have I missed where to turn that off?
- Niklas Pivic
from twhirl
Niklas: yes, you click "Hide" and then click it again to get all the options. Turn off Friend-of-a-Friend.
- Robert Scoble
@Loic : 1 solution find 1 friend which have a maximum of friends in common with you and only subscribe to this one. Or head to http://ffapps.com/ and install the Greasmonkey script Friends & Group which allows you to define...well...groups of friends which will be displayed as tabs (et désolé si l'anglais est pas parfait)
- Olivier
@scobleizer: thanks, and thanks to @louisgray for the link on how to specifically do it!
- Niklas Pivic
from twhirl
sort of ironic, coming from a friend-of-a-friend, but I have to say: Amen.
- Josh McHugh
I love the feature. I find so many interesting people this way.
- Jonathan.Rivera
Maybe this should be on Google App Engine? :)
- Bwana ☠
It's too bad. This sounded like a cool idea
- Pat Hawks
Bwana, Louis is always first to the FF stuff, I just tag along for the ride :-) Which reminds me, why isn't this on Techmeme yet, I linked to Louis in the first paragraph?
- Duncan Riley
Pat, I've swapped some emails with Patrick (the guy behind it) apparently Louis and I drive a lot of traffic. What he doesn't realize is once Scoble posts this, he's in for serious trouble :-)
- Duncan Riley
@Duncan... maybe it's because Gabe was doing a Techmeme vanity search and caught your mentioning it, then doing a preemptive stop? :-) http://www.sitemeter.com/...
- Louis Gray
Frick, dude - TechMeme is starting to look like old media next to FriendFeed / Twitter.
- l0ckergn0me
"Matthew may only be 4 days old, but he already has applied for an internship, working with Allen Stern of CenterNetworks. He gained the CN sticker in Allen's initial contract proposal and is sleeping on the offer. "
- Louis Gray
from Bookmarklet
Oh the little hand on the FACE! You are killing me here, Louis!!! Newborns are my favorite, favorite, favorite. And I see he's big enough for the regular bink and not a preemie bink?? Awesome!
- Cyndy
hey, I applied for that internship - you showing favouritism?
- Ivan Pope
from twhirl
So cute and itty bitty! How'd you manage to put him down? So amazing.
- Yolanda
Dear God, I think my uterus just did a backflip. The hand!! What a gorgeous little peanut.
- Carla Thompson
His first endorsement!! (I guess, after his parents)
- Alex Hammer
Hey, Thanks for letting me 'chat' with Matthew today. Sooooo Cooool! Brings back lots of great memories. Job already and everything. Neat :) One thing we can all say about Friendfeed. You get the good news too. Now, if Paul will post from the hospital .....
- Charlie Anzman
IMHO the notice is too small. Should be marked as warning, or twice as big as everything else. I'm sure I'd overlook it as it is.
- Ole Begemann
Ole we considered that but given that there is now an automated undo, we decided to not confuse to much the non-google reader users. A majority of our users a non-google reader users. We will keep an eye and an adapt if more people feel as strongly as you do.
- Edwin Khodabakchian
I love Feedly. I gave up on GReader about 3 weeks ago because I spent so much time on FF. I tried many readers and I stopped looking at other readers after I found GR. Even GR became overwhelming so I stop using it. I am very visual, and Feedly put the fun back into feed readers. Now I switch back and forth between FF and Feedly. Well done.
- Russellreno
thanks russell. we are early in the dev cycle and look forward to suggestions you might have on how to improve the concept and remove the rough edges.
- Edwin Khodabakchian
@Edwin When I say "no thanks" to an article, how come it doesn't disappear when I refresh?
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
I have to agree, Feedly is what I have been looking for. If I can figure out exactly what "no thanks" does, it will be even better. I'm afraid to click it for fear it will remove other things I actually want to read.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
Earlier today I posted on Twitter that Feedly has replaced Netvibes as my start page. I've been using it instead of Google Reader as well.
- Angel Smith
I agree completely with Russellreno on his choice of Feedly and FF( although I use twirl for FF). Feedly made me install Firefox 3.0 and actually use it : a huge milestone for me. A single desktop client app for all social media feeds would be awesome.
- Emmanuel Anumonwo
tried using this - it started adding friends feeds to my google reader. Information overload!
- Eric
Eric, same problem here. I don't want all of my friends shared google posts right in my reader, that's what I have Friendfeed for.
- Andrew Dobrow
@andrew in the what's new and the category pages, feedly will uses your friends recommendation *only* to filter the content so it should by no means feel like additional content. the feedly wall is slightly different in the sense that it aggregate everything. We are going to experiment integrating the feedly annotations with friend feed. If that works, we can start de-emphasizing the wall, at least for the more sophisticated users. thanks for the feedback
- Edwin Khodabakchian
I like the concept of feedly but it hasn't quite worked with my brain yet. I like the flow of gReader more.
- Jason Toney
I'm lovin Feedly, but I don't understand where the recommendations and annotations go?
- MLx
Marianne - On the right of the menu bar is a + and down arrow. Click the down arrow to see More Categories. Your recommendations and Annotations are in there.
- Russellreno
