How to build cheap cloud storage (67 terabyte 4U servers for $7,867) - Backblaze Blog
Amazing level of transparency and detail about their custom storage servers. HN discussion at http://news.ycombinator.com/item... (discusses why this is appropriate for backup, but perhaps not generic storage needs) - Bret Taylor from Bookmarklet
Put me down for two. - Jason Shellen
45 drives per unit and many units means they must be constantly replacing failed hard drives - just due to the sheer quantity of them in use - Jacob Old
It wasn't entirely clear to me from the blog post what you have to do to replace a drive. Looks like at minimum you have to remove the unit from the rack, and I don't see any drawer guides or similar to assist with that. And do they have to take the unit offline to replace a single drive? - Jason Wehmhoener

$117k for a petabyte of storage. Wow. - Nicholas James
Petabyte schmetabyte. - Rick Cogley
Mitchell: I don't think 1TB was "millions of dollars" in 1998. - Steve de Mena
Nice idea. Pity that it only supports a HTTPS interface, not surprising at that cost though (the software that runs the filesystems on the NetApp and other devices isn't exactly cheap to write). Anyone see if they quoted transfer speeds? I'm wondering what impact the four SATA cards each with SATA multipliers on them has when it comes to access speeds. - Russ
Steve: according to http://www.littletechshoppe.com/ns1625... disk cost ~$0.08 / mb in 1998, which comes out to >$800,000 for 1 TB or just over a million bucks in todays dollars. so maybe not millions, but a million! - Karl Rosaen
Russ: It runs Debian. If you were rolling your own (and they don't sell these units), you could turn on NFS or some other protocol (CIFS, iSCSI). They only use HTTP because it's cloud storage. NFS license is a major expense on NetApp, but all the major Linux distributions can act as NFS servers, CIFS servers, and probably iSCSI targets. - Andy Dustman
Andy: I know that you could do that on them but it leaves the problem of what to do with the storage. You could merge the 3 volumes into an LVM VG but the performance could become an issue with any load on it. It seems I wasn't the only one to question the performance, while the views of a Sun engineer aren't exactly unbiased it does highlight some of the downsides: http://www.c0t0d0s0.org/archive... - Russ
Russ, great find, thanks. - Jason Wehmhoener
Fascinating article; but more questions: "In rough terms, every time one of our customers buys a hard drive, Backblaze needs another hard drive." -- so what happens when a drive fails; how much redundancy is there? What happens when a meteorite destroys the whole building; is there off site backup too? (I know this *is* the off-site backup, but still...) I wonder how much data flows in and out over time. Maybe I should just read their website. - Rob Fisher
Rob: they mention using 15 drive RAID6 volumes that can lose up to 2 drives before failure - Mike Chelen
The worst part about this cluster design is the fact that I couldn’t shut up about it for the first couple days after finding out about it. It was the solution I proposed to every problem. There were complaints. - A Mitchell
IMO RAID6 is not that great. Granted, it's highly unlikely to lose 3 drives at the same time, but there's still possibility. Besides, for write-intensive app, parity calculation is quite time-consuming. I personally prefer RAID 10 (striped array of RAID1 pairs). Yes the effective usable space is less than half total capacity, but for backups -- which will sooner or later be used to restore something -- I prefer data integrity over usage efficiency. - Pandu ● IT Optimizer from fftogo

Jeremiah: here is the deal. I am not under embargo but already know the news. So I think I will call Arrington because you didn't embargo me. Oh, and I +do+ keep embargoes. I am even keeping a secret about two things you will learn in the morning. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
I still struggle with my 7 year old son to not steal his siblings' thunder in matters important to them. It's not easy for him. - Josh Haley
I know those two things, Robert. - Louis Gray

Kami, I saw Robert yesterday, and I asked him if I'd hurt his feelings, he said "yes". Robert and I go back, there was a time (ustream launch) where we well, didn't coordinate on news. He's truly a friend, and someone I respect as a media trailblazer --but I need to get everything coordinated. To be clear, he was on the list of folks I'd brief in detail --others just got cursory info. - Jeremiah Owyang
Here's a long discussion on where Jeremiah Owyang will be going next. Interesting discussion developing on embargoes and 'bloggers' - Drew B
Lets figure out where he is going. Who is in most need of Jeremiahs incredible intelligence on social media? - Nisse
Drew, is it interesting that Robert is threatening me that I didn't tell him? Should bloggers assert themselves to get news? (it's a bit fun watching him get antsy) - Jeremiah Owyang
Jeremiah, I find the continual embargo deiscussions fascinating. I hope your trust is respected here. - Drew B from email
Is he going to disneyland? - Cliff Gerrish
Jeremiah: my feelings were hurt because you told pretty much everyone else in the industry other than me. Here's a hint: they can't keep their mouths shut either. But I will. You will know tomorrow that I actually do know the news. But the other deal is that you're wrong. I've kept hundreds of embargoes over the past year and haven't leaked them to anyone. If you weren't a friend and... more... - Robert Scoble
So they want the publicity you can bring but want to control the timing and message. I would be inclined to not agree as well. Sounds like you are being used. - Brian Sullivan
I hear news all the time about people who aren't necessarily friends but would generally want the news quiet - does this mean I should start leaking those details? I'm not sure the right answer to that. The problem though is often the way I hear about that information is through other friends who were trusted to keep the info private. Is it worth betraying the trust of those friends as well? - Jesse Stay
The problem comes maybe when you are "friends" with everybody but also are trying to be a legitimate reporter at the same time. We criticize television and newspaper reporters for this all the time but tech reportage seems to get a pass. - Brian Sullivan
Jesse, yeah your situations seem tough because if you leak, you're a jackass because someone else can't keep their mouth shut. - Chris Heath
Brian: everyone uses me, I'm used to it, it's part of the role I play in life. :-) - Robert Scoble
Robert, I was planning on telling you before the announcement --and the offer still stands. I'm sorry I hurt your feelings, that wasn't my intent. - Jeremiah Owyang
What's the point here?? - Andru Edwards
nothing really andru, I say we just move along and let Robert and I handle this offline. Clearly, we need to work this out. - Jeremiah Owyang
Talking to Scoble now, I apologized. I take back what I said above, he's not broken any embargos in a while and I take that charge back. I also briefed him, as a friend, and more. Sorry Robert, I crossed the line. - Jeremiah Owyang
I'm going to guess Jeremiah will join Dave Armano and Peter Kim and work for Dachis. - Ari Herzog
Ari - that's my guess too. - Hutch Carpenter

Jeremy: who you talking to? No one has violated any trust. We're all cool now anyway. - Robert Scoble
Jeremy: and when I left Microsoft someone DID violate my trust and leaked it within hours. So what? It all works out. Coordination is overrated. - Robert Scoble
LOL Jason. But Robert is right, co-ordination can be overrated. - Ian Betteridge
Group hug. - Jeremiah Owyang
Jeremiah - your recognition and classifications/categorizations of trends and strategies is truly unique. Thank you for all you've done at Forrester. Whatever your new role is, I hope you'll continue to share your thoughts. - A Mitchell

It looks really cool...it's like friendfeed for your own website. And I like the "queued up" function as opposed to real-time flow (very distracting on popular blogs). How to use the new Google Reader feature to "Send to" FriendFeed:
Picture 3.png
But doesn't it already send to Friendfeed? I suppose you could send to a particular room - Deepak Singh
Deepak: this is a little different, but yes FriendFeed already pulls from Reader and is pushed data from Reader using PubSubHubbub. - Benjamin Golub
Ben ... will have to try it out. Have always wanted to send to a specific room from reader - Deepak Singh from IM
We also support http://friendfeed.com/... which reads a bit nicer :) - Benjamin Golub
... Ben, that looks rather interesting in ichat :) http://img.skitch.com/2009081... [http://img.skitch.com/2009081...] - Deepak Singh from IM
I am wondering why FriendFeed was left out in the default services - siva s
My shares already come to FriendFeed, as you know, and I won't be sending them to any other network (until forced). But appreciate the how-to. - Louis Gray

Is there any way to make it include an image if there is one? - Simon Wicks
Simon +1, to include images I go to actual page and bookmarklet, wish there is an direct way in reader. - Jacque
Yeah, i'm sure people have managed to do it before somehow, but i've never figured it out direct from Greader. - Simon Wicks
Simon +1. pictures are needed. BTW, do we need "https"? - woodear
Interesting - geeky feature! :) I already use FF to pull in my gReader shares. How is this different? - Susan Beebe
Yes, I brought it into FF long ago via add/edit feature. - Rob Schieber
Thank you very much. - David Faulkner
Does this speed up the transfer? I've noticed the past 2 days have been a little laggy getting here. - Courtney Engle
So when I using this method try to "send to" Ff - It takes me to FF and just pastes the URL of that feed item into a posting box. Is that proper behavior? - Matthew DeVries
Yep. Similar to the behavior with other engines. You can then add other rooms etc (something not possible with regular sharing AFAIK) - Deepak Singh
Wonder if there is a way to get it to open and drop it into the bookmarklet instead of Ff proper. - Matthew DeVries
BTW, FriendFeed (and Tumblr) should now be a built-in option on Send To http://www.google.com/reader... - Mihai Parparita
Thanks, Mihai. - Louis Gray
So what is the code to send it to a particular room? If I wanted it to flow in the public FF I would just click 'share'. - Paul Arterburn
Whoa, sharing to a particular room would be epic :) Would probably have to create a shortcut code for each room instead of multiple rooms... - Zulema ◕ ◡ ◕
Ya, I really just have one group for this - public share or private share among close friends (private FF room). That would also let me DM the link to a FF user if I wanted a *really* private share. - Paul Arterburn
What about diigo ? - Stanislas Jourdan
Would also like to know, if there is a way to configure Google reader to send to a certain group in FF? - Gerald Hildebrandt
At the very least, it's always good to know the code. - Mike Reynolds
tried 'http://friendfeed.com/$userna...', but did not worked out - Gerald Hildebrandt
AFAIK sending to a Room is a bit painful. I tag the item in GReader. Then subscribe to that tag's RSS in the FreindFeed Room. A little laborious to set up, but quick when sending - you just tag. And wtih GReader's pubsubhubhub they show up in Room immediately. - Nick in Manila

You can now get a daily or weekly email digest for anybody's feed on FriendFeed. You'll get a daily or weekly email with the most popular posts from that person's feed. To get the email, click the "Email/IM" link at the top of anyone's feed, and select the "Best of day" or "Best of week" email option.

Great! Thanks! Love FF! - Scott Monaco
I now get the FriendFeed Feedback posts as a Best of Day email so it doesn't fill up my feed, but I don't miss feedback. I also set up a "Best of Day" email for my "Technology people" friend list so I get a pretty good overview of tech news every day via email. - Bret Taylor
This is a really cool idea Bret, I wish you can make that an RSS feed option as well. I'd be much more likely to read summaries in RSS than in email. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Neat feature, but it's more focus on big shiney new features, while ignoring the glaring issues in need of polish in the site we currently have. - Matthew DeVries
Very cool. I like how you give us the OPTION rather than sending a daily/weekly digest like other sites *cough* LinkedIn/Facebook *cough* - Johnny
Lovely. Thanks guys. - Mitchell Tsai
Casey: Thanks for the tip. What's the 7 before the "?" mean in the URL? The number of likes or replies needed to be included? - manielse (Mark Nielsen)

Just curious - at what time of the day will we get these emails ? Midnight US-Time, or will it respect our timezones ? - Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Ahsan: it is somewhat random right now when the emails are sent, but we built in the backend capability to control what time they are sent, and we plan on exposing that control to users in the future. Right now, it is kind of random - sorry! - Bret Taylor
Thanks Bret - Ahsan Ali aka. Slick

Alp: we were not trying to withhold data. Later today the documentation will be updated to reflect the ability to obtain "Best of" for users. The feed id will be USERNAME/summary/N (similar to "Best of" for lists) - Benjamin Golub
Hi Ben, that is pretty funny, I tried that URL earlier today to see if it has been secretly released :) - Paul Kinlan

my inbox might say different, but I like that :-) - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Wow, this is really neat! And it links into the idea I expressed earlier, re: reducing signup friction / enabling limited guest privileges. Imagine if I could embed one of my FF rooms on my personal web site, and enable people to subscribe to that feed by e-mail with just a couple of clicks... rather than saying "you can get e-mail notifications but you have to sign up for Friendfeed first." "sign up" -- though admirably lightweight on FF -- is still a huge barrier. - Adam Lasnik
Love it. - Zachary TG
is there a love button cause I dont like this option I LOVE this option..great work guys - (jeff)isageek
Three options I would like (1) Can I select "top 100" instead of "top 30"? (2) Could I select both "best of day" and "best of week"? (3) How about older timeperiods? I'd love to get an e-mail with stuff from last week or Mar 2009? Start & end dates? Anything to help me read FriendFeed off-line would be great since I spend long periods off-line at festivals (especially during summer time) or overseas. - Awesome job guys! - Mitchell Tsai
Great way to keep up with those you're most interested in; things you don't want to miss. - Diego Barros 
So this works on groups too, cool! But we still cannot see Best of for groups on the site on friends lists. :-( I have several friends lists that include just groups and when I select to view the best of the page it's empty (even though if I got to the individual best of for those groups there are entries there). - Kol Tregaskes

I'm INTP too, Daniel. :) - Fa La La La Lindsay
INTJ for me - Jeff Quinton

btw, please don't judge me for this remark ;-) - Bart Muskala - AdNerd Sr. from twhirl
