Ok, I was planning to live stream it on Qik. - Mark Krynsky from iPhone
Curious to hear how it goes, and the next couple of days too. And, yes, no pictures please. - Kenton
Do they have wifi there, because if I recall correctly iPhone Qik can't stream live over 3g. (they better not have wifi) - Ryan
Whoa. - Joe
Wait, are you going to be conscious during the whole thing?!? - Victor Ganata
I certainly was for mine. - Stephen Mack
Ditto...it's a quick outpatient thing. - Jonas, Leper of FF
That was my understanding, but I've never seen one done. Are you going to live-blog it in its entirety? - Victor Ganata
Make sure you have several bags of frozen peas ready in the freezer for when you get home! #VoiceOfExperience - Mark "DerBingle" J
Ok, all done. Yes I was awake for the procedure. Only took about 20 minutes. Wasn't painful at all. Just a little pinch from the initial anasthesia injection. - Mark Krynsky from iPhone

Pictures or it didn't.... uh, never mind. - Morton Fox
Ok, anesthesia is wearing off. I'm feeling some mild pain but nothing drastic. Spidra...I'm guessing crotch temperature is brisk in the mid 40s since I'm currently icing the little fellas. 20 minutes on 20 minutes off is what they suggested for the first day. - Mark Krynsky
Just pee'd for the first time without complications. That's a good start. - Mark Krynsky

My Doctor tried to ease the tension by telling jokes during the procedure but they weren't funny. I laughed anyways to encourage him to do a good job...because after all...my balls were in his hands. - Mark Krynsky

MORE PICS - johnpiercy
Funny, Mark, and totaly unrelated to your v-temy, but since your character in my Sims world ran off with one of my favorite sim-daughters I've had this irrational antipathy to you. Sorry. I guess I should play another game to erase this weird virtual drama. - anna sauce
Haha Anna...I totally forgot about the FF Sims. I just couldn't get into it but it's good to know my likeness is still alive and well in other folks worlds. Hopefully the virtual me will show the kindness of the real me and return your sims daughter soon. - Mark Krynsky
GAH! - Josh Haley
Spidra, it would almost be worth traveling to your side of the US just so Dave could have his vasectomy done by Dr. Dick Chop. He would LOVE to be able to tell that story!!! And Mark, and hope you and your meat and veg are resting comfortably =D - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Actually, the friend in question lives in Austin, TX area. - Spidra Webster
Ive heard a bag of FROZEN PEAS for the days after is a good friend Mark ... serious - johnpiercy
Mark- Yeah this was way back. Idropped off after realizing my life/work/relatinoships were deteriorating due to OCD game play. Anyways, at the time you said that it was very unrelated to your real personality (this behavior of your virtual self) so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt :) - anna sauce
Oops. Looks like that's Chopp with two Ps: http://www.urologyteam.com/... EDIT: that urology clinic also has a Dr. Wang. All they need now is to recruit Dr. Dong, Dr. Johnson & Dr. Schwanz. - Spidra Webster
Spidra- this is just wrong - anna sauce
Prior to this I would not have imagined a scenario where freezing my balls would be something I'd look forward to. - Mark Krynsky
many guys at the firehall have shared there worst case scenarios ,, some have been good , others not so good .. some said the PEAS are amazing ... hope it goes well .. - johnpiercy
Great post. Speedy recovery. - Matt Snoulten

What do you mean about Ustream John? You want to do a Q&A? - Mark Krynsky
Jesse, when I first read your post with the word "stream"...... Haha. You mean ff stream ;-) - mandyvan from iPhone
I forgot to mention there were 2 women in the room along with my male doctor. One was his assistant, the other appeared to be in training. He called her over to show her something and said something to the effect "a little different than what they showed you in school" or something to that effect. I don't recall exactly. - Mark Krynsky
Mark, here's to a snippy^W snappy recovery! And I would definitely be taking that doctor's comment as a compliment :-D - Andy Bold
Thanks Andy but I don't believe he was referring to my unit, but the vas deferens which he had extracted to show her. - Mark Krynsky
I'm having an IM convo with a friend who already had the procedure done a few years ago. This is a quote from the transcript. "Anyhow, you told your wife that for best results it needs to be followed up with lots and lots of sex, right? And that there's residual pain that only a BJ can fix, right? And she's got to do all the work? Of course, if she doesn't go for that, tell her you can always outsource the job...or better yet - crowdsource it!" - Mark Krynsky
As long as you don't live or life stream it, I think I'm ok LOL - Mona Nomura
I'm intrigued to find out how one crowdsources a BJ, exactly. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Mona, I really thought it would have been interesting to be the first person to ever do it. I could have easily used Qik to stream it although I'm not sure if the doctor would have been cool with that. - Mark Krynsky
O_O Brave man. I will forever keep mine, though. Gotta keep them juices flowing OMG TMI Danny, T.M.I. - Danny Minick
Hahahahhahha Mark, you're AWESOME. Talk to you 2m at 12pst? ;) - Mona Nomura
OMG, I write very thorough posts covering the Lifestreaming concept for over 2 years and _this_ is the FF post that gets a like from Leo Laporte? *facepalm* - Mark Krynsky
Deep down inside, Mark, we're all crotch watchers :P - Johnny Worthington
Amanda, I'm sure there's a website for that, somewhere. #IAmNotGooglingThatThough #NoWay! - Andy Bold from email

Wait, the Personal Soundtrack shirt includes a rimshot: http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts... - Andrew C
Ok, well it's old news but The Urology Team also has a Dr Hardeman - I got a mailer from them and it was spelled Hardman and I was like WTF IS UP WITH THESE PEOPLE!!! (their offices are in the same building as my gyn) - Andrizzle Gizzle
Mark, you had a vase removed from where? *faints* - Micah Wittman
Who said anything about a va...*faints* - Mark Krynsky
Good work Mark, must've taken balls to do that - Toby Graham
Yep Toby...would have been hard to do it without them. I love it when I successfully execute a double entendre. - Mark Krynsky
When I had mine done (about 15 years ago) there was no option for online commiseration and support such as this! (Much less an option for live streaming video!) - Mark "DerBingle" J
15 Years ago I would have still done the same thing on a BBS or Compuserve...or God forbid AOL - Mark Krynsky
it hurt just reading this - Marco(aureliusmaximus)

You still need to take care of the 15 bullets in the chamber. I'm assuming hats or hand (or hat in hand). Sorry. - Bryan R. Adams

Installing OS 10.6 Snow Leopard on the first of seven Macs. And yes, I did buy the family pack for $20 more.
cool. good to know the family pack is super cheap too. - David Beach
Greg Rose
@12seconds Don't know if it is cool, but here is my background...http://12seconds.tv/channel...
it looks good. it's going to look even better soon. :) - David Beach
David Beach
okay but how do I tell who is subscribed to me on friendfeed? I can't find it anywhere. Is it me?
oh crap. you have to go to your "profile" to see your subscribers. apparently i have 328. Why this is not a link in the "friends" area is beyond me. - David Beach
David Beach
this seems to be where oaklandish gets their shirts printed - David Beach
Robert Scoble
Why Twitter is better than friendfeed. I want to call out @chrismessina but want him to come here so I can tell him he's dead:
On Twitter I can use the "@" syntax. What do I do to get him here on friendfeed? It's not nearly as easy to get people to visit here so I can chat with them. - Robert Scoble
But now that I've done it, what have I said is "dead" Chris, that has accelerated? That's a weird claim you made over on Twitter. - Robert Scoble
Ummmm... Scobez... send him a DM here in FF? - Internet's Tad
DM's suck, even the super dooper ones here in FF. - Robert Scoble
Send him an email :) - Diego Barros 
And what fun is calling someone out if you can't do it in public? - Robert Scoble
Diego: that's lame. - Robert Scoble
Email is so 1993. - Robert Scoble
Do a hybrid DM then. Send it to your feed AND put him as a recipient. Best of both worlds. - Internet's Tad
Tad: the problem is a lot of people don't check into friendfeed all that often. Plus, all my original items here go over to Twitter. - Robert Scoble
Was a joke, Robert. I knew you'd react like you did. ;) - Diego Barros 
Diego: I'm too easy! :-) - Robert Scoble
Then it's not a problem with FriendFeed - it's a problem with the people who don't check FF very often. :P - Internet's Tad
Tad: that's one problem, but, seriously, how do I get people to visit your friendfeed? I guess I could call you out with your URL, but that's too long. - Robert Scoble
Like hey http://beta.friendfeed.com/tad you smell isn't nearly as nice as "hey @tad you smell." - Robert Scoble
It's true... lol - Colin
No - I'd be called out using the hybrid DM I mentioned earlier. If people don't check FF very often then there's not much via FF you can do. You get a really nice indication that you have a DM in the FF beta. - Internet's Tad
Well, maybe not that lame. On his blog's contact page, the only thing he has is his email address. Not twitter, not FF, but an email address. - Diego Barros 
Email is for old people over 40. - Internet's Tad
"I'm too easy" - Robert Scoble :) - Diego Barros 
Here on friendfeed I have ego saved searches, but not everyone does. I wish there were a way to do something like the "replies" tab on Twitter here. - Robert Scoble
Friendfeed should have "people who are talking about you" page on every account. - Robert Scoble
Eventually people will realize that the conversation is over here, the fluff over on Twitter. - Leo Laporte
Well, you COULD do that with filters...I have that for everytime someone mentions my last name (Nayyar) since I'm sure to get a hit... - Mike Nayyar
LMAOing - sofarsoShawn
Leo: Or the fluff on FF is also beamed over to Twitter. I agree though, the conversations on FF are better. - Diego Barros 
Leo: agreed. But it would be better to have a built in system so that everyone could see when people are talking about them. Until that happens we just need to teach newbies how to search for their name. - Robert Scoble
Where's Chris? - David Beach
David: He'll eventually make his way over here out of sheer curiosity - Nicholas James
The only problem is, this is harder to get to - learning curve. However based on recent events I'm not sure that's a bad thing. I'd rather read what the tech savvy have to say than the Oprahs. - Adam Turetzky
Adam: Oprah will be here within two years. Let's get prepared now. - Robert Scoble
Adam: FriendFeed BETA is alot simplier then the FriendFeed.com version and improvements are making it better all the time. - Nicholas James
Nicholas: I totally agree. The friendfeed beta is now getting almost all my usage. - Robert Scoble
The FriendFeed beta, with the live updates, got me all excited about the service and I'm loving it. - Diego Barros 
http://threadedtweets.com/... is something I'm working on, it's threaded conversation on Twitter, if anyone here wants to play around with it I'd love the feedback. It's OAuth - Colin
Do big-name celebs have time for Friendfeed? On Twitter you can pretend to engage by sending a quick @reply to whoever happens to be talking at you when you log in, but for the most part broadcasting without listening. On FriendFeed there seems to be more of an expectation of real interaction. - Edward Coffey
Edward: lots of people use friendfeed just to broadcast. http://beta.friendfeed.com/techcru... for instance just broadcasts and still gets lots of engagement. - Robert Scoble
Robert: TechCrunch gets involved in a conversation? Haven't seen it. It's just a broadcast medium for him. You either listen or you're blocked with @techcrunch. - Diego Barros 
Robert I think as long as your avatar is green and hulk-like you'll keep the celebs away :-) - Keith Barrett
"Old people over 40"? Some of us helped create the tech you take for granted sonny! Now get off my screen. - Keith Barrett
Pssst... Keith... I'm over 40... :P ;) - Internet's Tad
Robert: Hmm, true enough. I guess people (both broadcasters and their audiences) are happy to use FriendFeed the same way they use twitter. - Edward Coffey
Robert, you can send messages to individuals as well as your public feed here on FF - it's the equivalent to "@" on Twitter to get people's attention, but less of a hack. I'll show you in just a second. - Jesse Stay
Jesse: Tad already showed me that. - Robert Scoble
Okay, I won't bug you with it then - glad you found it. It's really useful. - Jesse Stay
This is more of a Twitter problem than FriendFeed. If Twitter would enable "tagging" in their API, FriendFeed could append the person as meta-data in the Tweet they send from FriendFeed. - Jesse Stay
Of course, they could @reply the individual too - Jesse Stay
Tagging? - Colin
Right now you can post statuses with an "in_reply_to_id" on Twitter, which is just the id of the tweet it is in reply to, the problem is they also require you to put an @user in the same tweet - Colin
Wait, Twitter is where the fluff is? Is this thread evidence of that? Psshaw! Yes, cross-site replies is certainly a good idea, but I will say that FriendFeed fails the ego-awareness spidey-senses test, whereas Twitter excels. - Chris Messina
And, when you said that hashtags were dead, it seemed right around then that Tim O'Reilly and Sarah Millstein published a book mentioning that as a useful convention. So, now that you've said I'm dead, clearly I'm about to make it to the big time! Whohoo! - Chris Messina
Chris: that's what I'm talking about. But the search engine is way better here, so eventually those ego-awareness senses will get more evolved. :-) - Robert Scoble
I would still like FF to provide a syntax (@nnnn) where I can specify a link callout to person's profile, posting, or a group - Keith Barrett
One problem with tagging an individual on FriendFeed is they have to be following you for you to get their attention. - Jesse Stay
That way since Chris isn't following me I can still point out there is an ego-awareness option on FF (hint hint) ;-) - Jesse Stay
Chris: sometimes when I say things are dead I use it to get a conversation going. The hashtag post is one of those times. By the way, why do you need hashtags? To help out a search engine that's lame, that's why. You don't need them here, for instance. - Robert Scoble
Chris: I sent you a direct message here at http://beta.friendfeed.com -- would love an answer. - Robert Scoble
But then again I still can't tag this specific comment to get his attention - has to be a full post. Still flawed. - Jesse Stay
Robert, you don't really need hashtags on Twitter either - Jesse Stay
I've never really liked the @ system at Twitter. It feels counter intuitive to me. The FF system is much more logical. Or am I rationalizing because I find Twitter boring? - Andrew
Andrew: you're rationalizing. :-) - Robert Scoble
I like the idea Robert. Wish there was a way to track mentions here, like Twitter. Then you can have more of a conversation @ someone if you chose to. - Brian
I don't agree that Twitter is fluff at all. I have awesome conversations there. The view is more contiguous here with the threaded commentary, but that's a tradeoff for ubiquitous mobnile access and simplicity of Twitter.Different tools with different uses for me. - Ken Camp
Ken: the problem is that pointing to those conversations is very hard, if not impossible. So those conversations have limited utility to everyone else. - Robert Scoble
I agree Robert, but I see just as many problems here for usability, at least for my use. Both have good points and bad. - Ken Camp
Why is something either good or bad with regard to this technology and medium? Seriously...there is value in both or we wouldn't have all joined both. All these toys/tools have something they offer or wouldn't find a foothold in our lives. - Sheryl
I agree with Sheryl. Twitter isn't my only tool. Neither is FF. Nor FB. I require a multitude of tools just like when I was a master mechanic and electrician. I don't really want a crescent wrench. I want the right tool for the right job. - Ken Camp
I think Chris Pirillo could really turn http://twickie.pirillo.com into something much greater if he wanted to. - Jesse Stay
Casual users only want one tool, they can barely remember and learn to use one, that's why the good and bad. - Colin
People who want one tool in today's world are what we call luddites. Email is their one tool. Let them stay in 1992 forever. Email won't die before they do. But those who can't keep up can be left behind. Natural selection will weed them out of they don't adapt. hehehe - Ken Camp
Some people don't sit at desks all day, and I still want them to use computers. - Colin
Colin: I understand not everyone wants to use multiple tools. Fine. But why must they denigrate a whole other tool simply because they haven't the time or inclination? I still don't see why we can't accept there is room for a variety. - Sheryl
Robert: If you want Chris here, or for that matter anyone else, you have to give them a reason that makes a difference to them. Show them why it's cool. Teach them why it's better. Some of us are hard sells ;-) - Sheryl
You just made my Twitter argument Colin. I hate being at a desk and using the computer. My Blackberry is my computer most of the time and FriendFeed is utterly unusable on that or my iPod Touch. Twitter wins easily in that mode. - Ken Camp
No FF clients on Blackberry? - Colin
I've hunted, asked and begged. If there's an FF client for BB, I can't find anyone who knows what it is or has ever seen it. Either that or they're keeping it from me. :-) - Ken Camp
It's a safe bet if I actually post or comment on FF, I'm at my laptop and not in casual computing mobile mode where I prefer to be unless writing. - Ken Camp
Ken have you tried FFtogo.com? - Nicholas James
Thanks Nicholas. I hadn't but just looked. Sadly anything that's a web site or m.something site will inherently be unusable on the deplorable Blackberry browser. That may change with the impending 5.0 OS. FFtogo.com does look like it would work on the iPod though. That's one step closer, although requires being in WiFi range. But it's one great tool I didn't have before. Thank you! - Ken Camp
BTW I remember reading an article at BrightHub I've just dug it up: http://www.brighthub.com/mobile... it says that FFToGo would work well on a Blackberry :) - Nicholas James
Thanks again Nicholas. Actually, I'm really hoping the guys at SocialScope will add FF support after they launch. Their closed beta right now, but we've been using it for quite a while and it truly rocks for Twitter and Facebook. If they add FF they'll own the BB market for a moble app for all three. - Ken Camp
So this is from my blackberry. It's usable but only just. I defintely prefer the pc experience. - Sheryl from fftogo
FFtogo is far less usable on my BB Curve than Sheryl's Bold. Just usable on hers. I had to really shrink fonts and while I could use it, it's difficult enough that I wouldn't. Twitter SMS is far easier. That's the FF problem for me. Unless I'm at a PC with keyboard it just isn't as easy (or elegant) for me to use. Simlicity is elegance and while FF has real value, it can't be my first place without solid mobile support. - Ken Camp
Yeah Ken had to set his font to a 9 in order to see it. I have the bold and that was better but still really tough. - Sheryl
Ken I agree. This is a major issue for them to solve. - Robert Scoble
FF doesn't have to make the clients themselves =) Developers, developers, developers! - Colin
Robert: Mobility is critical to most of us. Everyone has a phone with them everywhere. A laptop only some places. Unless you're Randal Schwartz and no one can be that geeky. Really. :) - Sheryl
Except I'm too busy cranking out things for Twitter... - Colin
Sheryl: I know. I use my iPhone about 40% of the time when I am on friendfeed. Like now. Wonder why Ken finds his touch unusable? - Robert Scoble
It's a Touch, (no network) - Colin
I agree Colin. I'm not a developer, but it would appear that FF isn't as developer-friendly as it needs to be. Or hasn't achieved enough critical mass for broad support yet. I'm sure it will come, but for now it's another place and just can't make this first. - Ken Camp
Touch is a brick when there's no network. - Internet's Tad
FF has a pretty awesome API. I should dredge back up my work with Flickr/FF experiments. - Internet's Tad
I mean, I'd love to get out there early with FF clients for BB/iPhone (if they don't already exist), in order to get the jump on everyone else and be that much ahead. - Colin
Colin: aTouch has wifi which is how I am using my iPhone - Robert Scoble
It's easy Robert. The Touch keyboard sucks. Period. I tpye about 6 WPM on it and close to 50 on BB. Touchscreen technology in the Touch is not anywhere near good enough to mainstream. I played with an iPhone and found it more usable, but still not enough to ever consider buying one. I can read on the Touch, but if I can't interact, why even try? ;-) - Ken Camp
But at this point I'm not sure it's worth the risk for me, (and I'm a risky guy ;)) - Colin
I know Scoble, but I can see how a Touch that only has WiFi wouldn't get used at home, where you already have computers setup. - Colin
Ken: interesting. I am very fast on iPhone keyboard. - Robert Scoble
Ken: The touch/iphone OSes perform the same, (they are the same) - Colin
I am also fast at it, I like to argue it's faster than anything that actually needs to be physically pressed. On the iPhone my fingers just glide - Colin
Colin: I am lying on my back on the couch. Computers don't work there. - Robert Scoble
You need to disconnect Scoble! lol - Colin
Then I'll be using the BB or a QWERTY Nokia for a long time. That screen-based keyboard is unusable for me. Requires very cautious one finger typing with lots of errors and corrections. I hate it. - Ken Camp
Robert: Ken and I are apparently qwerty centric. We both have touches and find them so difficult! Oh for some things...minimal tasks they're fine but my bold is my lifeline :) - Sheryl
I love the touch for music, video and other things. Anything that requires keyboard interaction will drive me to set it aside and do something else. It's one reason I never lusted for an iPhone. The interface slows me down and reduces productivity. Not a good tool for my working style I guess. - Ken Camp
I'm with Ken, right now I try to get a lot done, and anytime spent away from my main computer terminal is time spent inefficiently and wasted. - Colin
Ken: it's probably cause we view them more as a toy than a tool. We don't use them exclusively. if we had our BB's taken away our touch would probably get very handy. - Sheryl
You have gotta better idea in your mind.. Let's do it! - Mohammad Abdurraafay
What are we going to do Mohammad? - Colin
Honey, if my BB got taken away, I'd drop the SIM in the N95 and use it before the Touch I think. But I wouldn't Twitter, text or email as much. I'd probably just curl up in the fetal position in the corner. lol - Ken Camp
Ken: I bet you will love the N97. - Robert Scoble
I'd love to get my hands on an N97 Robert. And an E71. Hoping we win that 48 hours in Denmark thing and I can coax someone to send one our way to beat to death sharing the trip. That would be very cool. - Ken Camp
I use my iphone (on wifi) around the house for FF (even though there are sometimes 4 computers here) - agree with you, Robert, much nicer for couch surfing. - Micah Wittman
@Jesse: <http://beta.friendfeed.com/scoblei...> of course you can tag/ link to comments, only not easy. Takes some effort, which, however, may be read as motivation. Sooner or later FF will probably add comments-to-comments ("c2c" ;-)) and I already suggested elsewhere that such followups be distinguished automagically from comments-to-posts by having their first word turned into an @[nick=hyperlink] as in this c2c. - ianf ⌘
Ianf I'm talking about tagging specific individuals in the comments. I can copy Robert individual on a post to my feed and it appears in his direct messages. I can't do that for a comment. I can do it on Twitter though. - Jesse Stay
OK. I'm more concerned with the development of the FF, which is altogether a more promising service, than one-trick-pony Twitter. Also, reading some of the threads here, one can easily get twitterrified with Twitcentricity of the common Twitterverse. Where did we go wrong – don't answer that rhetorical question. We were chugging along nicely for close to 2M years, Homo Habilis to Sapiens, no Twitter in sight, then all of a sudden get our nickers in a twi(s)t because Twitter is down again? - ianf ⌘
Ianf it's funny - my family, who isn't even on Twitter, talks about Twitter all the time when we're around. It's ridiculous, and hilarious at the same time. My dad was telling my Aunt yesterday all about how Twitter would benefit her business yet he won't even join the service because it's a waste of time for him. - Jesse Stay
yes, I am over fourty and I use email. What I had when I used elm or pine is that all my conversations with friends, family and contacts where in the same place, easy to backup and browse. Now they are scattered all over the Internet. In a way Friendfeed unifies and this is a hint of the right way to go. Apps lose, APIs win always. - Michele Costabile
they are not the same service. That's like saying bacon is better than summertime. - Fleagle
but bacon IS better than summertime! - Jim Hearts FF
U can not connect with one person directly. - ybs
we need to find another idea to obsess on. - guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Jim: Clearly there are MEN on this post. Why is it always men who think bacon rocks? haha I love it!!! - Sheryl
Sheryl: I am not sure Mona will be pleased with your "always men who think bacon rocks" statement. ;-) - Brian Sullivan
true, Friendfeed could do with a better @-system like twitter does. As mentioned by everyone, a simple ego filter will do, but I would like to see it a bit more, in the way that not only when people say @phefland or @efland but also just whenever there is a reply to any discussion where I have been active. I know I can look under my discussion, but it's not optimal imo. - Peter Efland
I think you accomplished your goal. It was posted to your twitter account with @name and he saw it on twitter, and it included a link to your post on friendfeed which he followed and responded in this thread, which looks exactly like what you wanted to do. http://twitter.com/Scoblei... - April Russo (app103)
I think friendfeed is more like facebook than twitter right now, twitter is my favorite because it is easy, I am to lazy to figure out friendfeed but everyone can see my feed LOL and I dont go to facebook often but really like my friends there and they can read my tweets :o) - David Gross

Haven't gotten a piece on TechMeme in ages even though I was posting all thru Xmas and know what -- I'm fine so fcuk off Gabe.
See, you didn't need to write a whole blog post about what is wrong with techmeme... you 140 chars sums it up nicely :) - Brian Roy
I've never had something on TechMeme, Slashdot, or Mashable. :P - MarkCarras
you don't need him. You were there before Techmeme, and you'll be with us long after they delete the techmeme entry from Wikipedia. - Duncan Riley
The very fact you've posted this proves to everyone that you are obsessed with (not getting on) TechMeme. Plonk (again). - Andy C
Loic: lol - Eric Florenzano
Andy -- it does, for at least the moment when I wrote it. I had just read something insipid on TM that no one was pointing to. When ever I see that I think what poor taste Gabe has. And I'm reminded that Scoble says, and I agree, that TechMeme is just Gabe's blog, and absolutely nothing more than that. He's got a lot of people snowed into thinking it's got some magic, but I don't buy it. - Dave Winer
Yes Loic, and that moment too. Thank you for reminding me that I am an imperfect human being. :-) - Dave Winer
Duncan I'm not so sure about that, but thank you for the vote of confidence. - Dave Winer

interesting line on it being Gabe's blog. Good line from Scoble, and very much accurate. Why people believe it's some sort of magic ranking system is beyond me, given the evidence to the contrary. Sad thing for Gabe: the advertisers will work this out soon as well - Duncan Riley
I meant "note" of course - Loic Le Meur from twhirl
@DaveWiner: i bet if you upped ante on "fuck off gabe" tweet -> a blog rant it makes @TechMeme (pulls up chair & some popcorn ;) - dave mcclure
dave, most times i don't care -- i had just read something idiotic (like what you suggest) on tm and thought what a waste. then i got over it and went on.save the popcorn for arrington's latest shoe bomb. - Dave Winer
@davewiner lots of people have issues with techmeme. Duncan Riley even has a new name for it CRUNCHMEME - Sidharth Dassani from fftogo
To be fair, Dave, you didn't break any important news or start a bitchmeme lately. I am sad that you've joined the mob in shooting the messenger on this one. It's not Gabe's fault that people aren't linking to you. People aren't linking to anyone much any more on their blogs, be that the Twitter/FriendFeed effect or just that there is a real news drought underway. Bitching at Gabe is pointless. - Paul Montgomery
Paul -- I'm just sharing my point of view, and that is never pointless. That's the credo of blogging. - Dave Winer
Paul, what Dave is pointing out is that exactly because of the news drought, at least some of the stuff that he put out while other didn't should have been there. - Amit Morson
Paul, Dave's proposed among other things a Feedburner alternative. A 2 second check of his link profile refutes your entire comment. But I do agree with one point: bitching at Gabe is pointless. He won't hear, his heads to far up Arrrington's arse to notice - Duncan Riley
Duncan: Are other bloggers picking up on any of the things Dave is writing? Bitter comments from slighted bloggers aside, TechMeme is algorithmic, even if Gabe selects stories manually as well. None of the blogs I've read have been linking to Scripting News lately, so I wouldn't expect Dave's blog to register as noteworthy by TM (no offense intended). - John Zipp
John, have you been watching TechMeme -- they include quite a few posts that no one is pointing to. Just FYI. (And I could use some perjorative terms to describe you, but I won't -- just note that it's not generally a great thing to do to someone who's right here -- if you want non-flamey discourse.) - Dave Winer
John, it's not exclusively algorithmic. It's a mixture of link profiles and hand picked links. And it weighs links depending on the source: I'm completely banned, and as I've proved in numbers before, it treats sites like Mashable poorly as well, as it is with Dave. Context: Loic LeMeur is on the leaderboard. Love Loic, but numbers and links vs Dave...do some homework - Duncan Riley
They like Fred Wilson too, and inexplicably (ha) two posts from the TechMeme blog ranked highly as well, even though no one was pointing to them. And that's just from memory. If I were taking notes there would be lots more, but I'm working on other things. - Dave Winer

Good one, Mark. Doubt he's ever heard that one before. - Akiva Moskovitz
Techmeme tried to be fully automatic but couldn't pull it off. The human intervention there however is partly motivated by ego and personal "issues". - Amit Morson
Dave: telling someone to F off is usually pointless, and hardly constitutes a cogent point of view. I think I might have to (gasp!) blog about this issue to get my point across more intelligently. - Paul Montgomery

Cool. BTW, I meant to say that Gabe should fcuk off -- with lots of love! :-) - Dave Winer
TechMeme is like Head-On. Love the product or is that I hate the product. Can never figure it out. But it makes me feel like shit, except when I'm number 1 then I feel great. Most often it makes me feel like shit. Give me a way to kill it and I'll go for it. I'll even put some money behind killing it. Not a lot, but some. And with that I bid you all a good night. :-) - Dave Winer
Psst.. did you hear Techmeme shot JFK and sold nuclear secrets to the Terrorists? But seriously. Techmeme has an audience because it's useful. That audience happens to be bigger than the 5 people that complain about not getting linked. Gabe doesn't have to make Techmeme link to anyone. - Nick Gonzalez

12seconds.tv released its iPhone app this morning. I gotta get a 3G iPhone (lost mine a while back) but their app is cool.
Robert Scoble has no iPhone!? Shock, horror! - Phil Whelan
I have an old crusty one. - Robert Scoble
They are charging 99cents. Jerks. - Mona Nomura
If they are going to charge, shouldn't it be 12 cents? - Shevonne
Mona: they have no funding and are trying to build a real business! - Robert Scoble
Good for them, but I will wait for Qik - no other Soc Nets charge for their iPhone apps! And I am not investing in a company that has no funding, even if it is 99cents! - Mona Nomura
It's not like venture capitalists are experts at picking companies, either - check out the deadpool. - Shawn Farner
Mona - so you'll invest in a company with no revenue/business model but NOT one that has no funding but expects to make money... wow... just... wow - Brian Roy
What if Qik all of a sudden said they was going to charge for their app? - Outsanity
What makes 12seconds stand out, Shawn? - Mona Nomura
Mona, would you not use a product just because the company that make it has no funding? - Amit Morson
Is Mona even on 12seconds? - Outsanity
They're always adding features, but most importantly, they might be the last ones standing :). They know how to not burn through money and right now, that's perfect. - Shawn Farner
it doesn't make videos, just 3 pics if I read the description right - Clarence Westberg
I will not use them because they are charging for an app and have no funding. They do not stand out enough for me to want to actually support them. (I have been on 12seconds since July) - Mona Nomura
The only thing I can say is they need some apps for phones that actually does video but, better than nothing at all, right? - Outsanity
I have them, but don't use them. I had issues with trying to get my Mac to work with their service. I stuck with Seesmic due to that. - Shevonne
MacBook or iMac? Mines works fine with them - Outsanity
The bigger question is when is Qik coming out?! - Elijah Nicolas
Can't believe people are carping about 99 cents, skip a 5 mile drive in your SUV - Clarence Westberg
It's not the price, it's the principle. - Mona Nomura
@Outsanity - The Macbook. I actually went on a few forums and it seems like others have been having issues as well - Shevonne
Mona - OK I'll by that... what is the principal? That you only use stuff from funded companies? - Brian Roy
@Shevonne, is the camera source on "USB Video Class Video"? I assume the MB cam is the same setting as on the iMac. If anything, you can email them about this issue. - Outsanity
Qik works great on the N95, but I haven't tried 12seconds. The issue here seems to be reaching out to your existing social networks on other sites to let them know you've got something posted. - Mr. Gunn
I did two weeks ago and never received a response. Maybe they have resolved it. I'll check it out tonight. - Shevonne
No. I have said this repeatedly in this thread: They are charging, when no other Social Networks are, in addition to not being funded. Not only that, their app does not support video - which is what their site is about. I don't know about you, but that is beyond bizarre to me. - Mona Nomura
OK - so the principle is that social networks shouldn't charge users - you won't join/participate in one that does. Did I get that right? BTW I'm not snarking at you, just trying to understand. - Brian Roy
I find it weird people will charge for a Twitter app and people buy them - Outsanity
Charging for use and charging for apps are two separate things - 12seconds is releasing an app (that does not even DO what the site is about) for 99cents. There is way too much competition out there, what sets them aside? I do not believe in them, so I do not want to invest my time and or money. And Brian, it takes a lot to offend me, but thank you for the courtesy. :) - Mona Nomura
It's a glorified slideshow with audio not video, where is Qik? - Justin Fowler
Mona - OK, got it. And like I tell my kids - There is no excuse for failing to be polite :) - Brian Roy
Seems like a good work around for a (i)phone that doesn't do video unless you jailbreak. I mean, the problem is with Apple not 12seconds. 12seconds has tried to come up with a (i)phone option for their users. This is a company that has spent less than 100k to get operational and I believe they all still have day jobs. I'll try it out for .99; what the heck. - Kenley Neufeld
i think Kenley hit the nail on the head. 12seconds are not at fault. - Outsanity
I don't think it's Apple's fault, I'm throwing blame at AT&T telling Apple not to allow it because their network can't handle it. - Justin Fowler
Bottomline: different strokes for different folks. That is the beauty of choices. :) And I disagree the fault lies with Apple. Big picture, people. Big picture. - Mona Nomura
I don't know Mona. Just seems like a company like Apple could provide two key things on their phones: video and copy/paste. Of course, I'm just playing with 12seconds and remembering how Twitter started out (the question then was, why?). I still ask that a bit about 12seconds, but trying anyway. I do like seesmic too. - Kenley Neufeld
Mona - This is Sol one of the founders of 12seconds. I hear you. Our app and our product isn't for everyone. However, we have every right to try to create revenue. We're doing our best given that Apple doesn't allow video and a huge percentage of our users have iPhones (and don't want to jailbreak it). 12seconds is about sharing moments, not live streaming video. We think the app accomplishes this. AND we think it is worth 99 cents (which isn't very much). - Sol
Just made my first clip with the app; pretty simple and now I can view 12seconds videos on the iPhone. I do see some interesting application with the app. Check out this post: http://12seconds.tv/channel... compared to my post: http://12seconds.tv/channel... - Kenley Neufeld
@ Shevonne "I did two weeks ago and never received a response. Maybe they have resolved it. I'll check it out tonight. - Shevonne Polastre" -------- I'm sorry if that slipped through the cracks. Please email me at david@12seconds.tv and we'll try to sort out your issue. Selecting the USB Class Video option would have been my first piece if advice as well. I'm sure we can get you straight. - drs650
I think it looks pretty cool. Such negativity for .99. I paid 9.99 for MonkeyBall and I think I've played it once. - James Hull
It's a slideshow with audio........... not exactly what I would want. Qik and Ustream both have iPhone apps in the queue. If they get approved, I hope 12seconds follows up with a video app - Bwana ☠
Come January we should see a software upgrade from apple allowing video recording apps to run on all iPhones. So hang in there for a month. - vijay
But why would people use this? What real-life problem does it solve? Is it just for fun and games? I don't get 12seconds.tv, personally. - Jesse Stay
I downloaded it and think it's great, love the Ken Burns effect and the 3 pics may work out better than pics, I think they have stumbled upon a great app - Clarence Westberg
Believe me... if iphone video recording was an option, we'd be all over it. If @vijay is correct, then we'd be very very happy. However the output is video, you are essentially making a video in the end, it's just all ken burnsy ;) Thanks to everyone for your support! We totally appreciate it. (12seconnds co-founder) - David Beach
Sorry guys, in my earlier comment I said we should see video support via s/w upgrade soon, but a comment in another thread made me think about the EVIL that holds back iPhone - at&t. Video apps + support might be filtered out by at&t based on bandwidth concerns, like they did with removing podcaster and apple's 50 MB podcast limit. It's something we should have in the back of our heads. - vijay
@drs650 - Thanks! I am going to check it out when I get home. If anything, I will email you. - Shevonne
I don't really get what 12seconds is about, but dissing their app for being "not what the site is about"? seriously? Mona - you do know that video is just a series of photos strung together right? - Jon Price
This is very strategic to me. Granted, their 99cent price will get them less takers, but once the iPhone sdk allows video capture, they will be on it like butter on a hot potato and release an update, and will be the 1st app on iPhone with video capabilities. Prob easier getting an update of an app through instead of a fresh app... - Shazron Abdullah
they ripped me off... i talked about this same concept weeks ago on seesmic for a seesmic iphone app. I've been working on it over a month. - Zac Bowling

Hey, Yahoo, It's Time to Grow Up - The Daily Beast - http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-a...
With Yahoo announcing more cost cuts, an Internet media veteran offers some advice: Go for it. Yahoo today said it would cut at least 10 percent of its staff after recording a 64 percent drop in profit. Wall Street’s lost its faith; shares are worth less than half the $33 a share Microsoft offered earlier this year. And restructuring is in the offing. Now is as good a time as any for Yahoo to grow up and decide what it is going to be. - David Beach
I'm sorry but the author's suggestions that Yahoo become a media company is weak. Yahoo had tried to become a media company, even hiring media guru Terry Semel as CEO, but we've seen how that has come to pass. I don't quite see the connection between Yahoo (an internet company) and co-producing media like CBS shows. It's like suggesting that Google grow up and make washing machines or Apple start manufacturing lingerie. What has an internet company got to do with doing more of old school media? - Pras Sarkar
yeah, seems really off base to me. Larry Kramer the author is a newspaper guy; he's basically saying he thinks yahoo should hire the people in the newspaper biz and make a content model virtually identical to that biz. I went through the first boom, when people said 'content is king'; that didn't work out too well. I think the internet is for tools and relationships... - Ben Clemens

So my post on Facebook dropping 20-50% of app traffic gets ignored, but Scoble's resume post makes front page of Techmeme? Makes no sense.
Watch, now that it's getting attention on FF it will make TechMeme. I totally don't get TechMeme. A lot of news doesn't get reported there. - Jesse Stay from twhirl
TechMeme has a heavy bias towards previous sources. So, Scoble has the reputation already and his posts generally get considered. Because other "big-name" blogs pick up the story, it hits techmeme. I do not totally understand techmeme, but that is the general pattern I have seen. - Rob Diana
Essentially. If I want to hit techmeme, I've got to write it on Mashable or a "known" blog. Personally I take almost no stock in Techmeme anymore. - Ben Parr
+1 Rob - TechMeme just doesn't know you yet, but your post was really interesting & informative! Great work. - Sarah Perez
I'm no Scobleizer.com, but Techmeme has put me on the front page several times, so Gabe has to be listening. Perhaps I'm just not in his personal reader yet - this is big news though. A very large number of Facebook apps right now are down because of the change Facebook put in place. (including several election apps) - Jesse Stay from twhirl
Resumes are universal. Facebook traffic metrics are not. - Daniel J. Pritchett
Well, regardless, Facebook looks to have fixed the problem today so we're all good. - Jesse Stay from twhirl
Is there something you're missing by NOT going to TechMeme? I seem to stumble across the good stuff through the shares of others. - Shawn Farner
TechMeMe does a good job Jesse. It can't always be expected to be perfect. You can literally see the changes Gabe makes to try and keep it relevant. - Charlie Anzman
CNN linked to my blog yesterday. That's why I got onto Techmeme. Techmeme is a crap shoot. None of my videos have been on there, even though many are damn interesting. But Daniel is right. This is my highest-trafficed post in quite a while. Lots of people need to know about resumes, and stories about how to get through this wacky economy will do well. Facebook developers getting hurt? Only affects a few so won't get as much attention. - Robert Scoble
By the way, my post was higher on FriendFeed too and everyone knows you on FriendFeed. So why pick on TechMeme only? - Robert Scoble
Robert, you're way more popular than I am :-) I expect news from Techmeme, with FriendFeed it's my own responsibility to make news and I have more control over that. Techmeme I have no control. BTW, I wasn't trying to say your post wasn't good - I really liked it, and agree with it actually. I just thought it was less "news" than mine. I think you're right - Techmeme is very much a crap-shoot. I've never been able to predict the articles of mine that have made it there. - Jesse Stay from twhirl
And BTW, apps being down isn't just affecting developers - it's affecting millions of users, and perhaps some of the fate of our nation. Several election apps have been down all weekend, just before the deadline to register to vote. - Jesse Stay from twhirl
Jesse: I've never been able to predict which ones of my things will get to TechMeme either. It depends on what people want to link to for whatever reasons. More people linked to this one than link to other things I do, even though the other things I do are more important, I think. I agree your article should have been there. - Robert Scoble
Which brings an interesting point - what happens when blogs stop re-reporting orignal news? What happens when all that transitions over to FriendFeed? Will Techmeme survive, or adapt? Or will that never happen? - Jesse Stay from twhirl
It's a good post jesse. don't worry about techmeme, just keep doing your thing. ;) - David Beach
Times are changing. Information will no longer be consolidated and centralized. With all the readily available options, the real question is: What should bloggers who want to be heard focus on? - Mona Nomura
Agree with David ... It all comes around - Charlie Anzman
That's an excellent question Mona - I think good content is key. - Jesse Stay from twhirl
Well, good content is the most important, but publicity is definitely required as well. If you are not a huge blog, then you need to work FriendFeed, Digg, Mixx, Reddit, etc. Otherwise, you will be entirely dependent on others determining whether your content is worthy. - Rob Diana
Can you do that without Techmeme though? I receive way more traffic from Techmeme than all of those combined (well, perhaps minus Digg or Reddit, but I've never been on those) - Jesse Stay from twhirl
Funny you say that. I have gotten significantly more social media traffic (including friendfeed) than I have ever received from TechMeme. I have not been a lead/headline on TechMeme though. - Rob Diana
