"All iPhones (except the iPhone 3GS units sold after Week 40 (september)) can be jailbroken and unlocked out of the box with blackra1n - http://blackra1n.com). Enjoy."
- BeauGiles
It's weird to me why so many don't list their phone numbers. I've done that for four years and always it has brought me good things. Yeah, a few crank calls here and there but there's ways to defend against that:
- Robert Scoble
1. Only accept calls that have caller ID turned on.
- Robert Scoble
2. Keep your contact list up to date. On my iPhone it shows me the name of someone who has called me before if I put them into my contact list.
- Robert Scoble
I've been using it as my phone book on my ye ole Palm Centro since I got the device. Besides, you should list it on Facebook anyway so you can guiltlessly avoid joining all those "lost my phone" groups that keep popping up; or is that college-age only thing?
- Aram Zucker-Scharff
3. If someone crank calls you, or you get a spam call (I am getting more of those) I change their name to something derogatory and I never accept their calls anymore.
- Robert Scoble
Google Voice number listed in my Facebook profile. No worries.
- Dave Roth
I rarely get calls from strangers even though my number is listed on my blog and on facebook. In fact, it's listed everywhere.
- Shaine Mata
Shaine: it's rare I get calls from anyone, which is just great.
- Robert Scoble
Google Voice number listed. nice touch
- Barry Peters
Robert: on mine the names only show up if you're in my address book for some reason
- Jesse Stay
You get a cell phone call that's caller ID blocked, TrapCall works great! Does anyone know of any other services that unblock the caller ID?
- Eric
Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I thougt was happening
- Jesse Stay
I actually called you once in Austin for SXSW. I got you lost. The guy next to me freaked out..."You just called Robert Scoble?" Me: "of course, his number is on his blog".
- Shaine Mata
I wish Google Voice could auto-forward calls that are blocked to a custom voicemail though
- Jesse Stay
Jesse: oh, caller ID only shows the number. Mine will show 425-205-1921. It will only show a name if you've associated that number with a name in contacts.
- Robert Scoble
I agree, the new FB iPhone app is great, good idea about using it as an address book.
- mark taylor
mark: it's really cool because it shows you which of your friends have put their phone numbers in there and gives you an icon you can click on, and you can make the call right from Facebook.
- Robert Scoble
Does it allow you to sync with your phone's address book? For all its glitches, the BlackBerry storm has been syncing contacts across apps for months now. It's pretty cool to see my contacts' facebook icons pop up when I get phone calls.
- Daniel Philp
Daniel: nope, I don't believe it's syncable. But because people keep their Facebook accounts up to date it's the best way to keep your accounts up to date. I wonder, though, if it syncs with Plaxo.
- Robert Scoble
PJ: my number has always been public and nothing bad has happened.
- Robert Scoble
robert: I think that's not much safe for girls and children. please rethink about the abuse and etc
- tevfik bülent öngün
@Daniel - I believe that retrieving phone numbers and email addresses is forbidden by the Facebook API TOS.
- BeauGiles
@tevfik - List it on there, then protect it using friend lists. Eg, only let Family and friends see it. Or, add people you don't know to a friend list and then restrict that friend list from seeing that phone number or other details.
- BeauGiles
Yeah, I've been using this with the Facebook app on BlackBerry. It's a great feature, though only about a quarter of my friends have their number listed.
- Oliver Ortega Chua
@BeauGiles. yeah sure i can do this. but will children care about this?
- tevfik bülent öngün
@tevfik I encourage my friends to do it. Makes it really easy for them also when they get a new phone; stops all of these silly 'I lost my phone; what's your number' groups - they could just pull up the Facebook phone book and grab the numbers from there.
- BeauGiles
tevfik: girls and children are attacked most often by people who are already in the house or who are personal friends. I totally disagree that putting a phone number up will lead to that kind of abuse.
- Robert Scoble
Sekhemets: name one time that someone was attacked because they had their phone numbers put up in public. Just one. Did you realize that in the US we all used to have our phone numbers listed in the phone book? I think the paranoia is crazy.
- Robert Scoble
Wow, I think this is something to think about, Have had my phone on my blog for a few years... never been a problem! Also like the idea of listing my Google Voice number, and may do that...
- WalterAkana
Robert, my AT&T rep said that spammers have every single AT&T phone number - it is clearly not that hard to get someone's phone number if these spammers can get it.
- Jesse Stay
Better yet, list your google voice number. Contribute to the phone book and maintain some layer of privacy/control.
- Drew McKechnie
Robert, syncing with Plaxo would be awesome. That, however, would require a change to the current policy of Facebook, which you and I both know has a history of restrictiveness around contact info sync!
- John McCrea
Sekhemets: there is not a good case to be paranoid about phone numbers. There IS a good case to be paranoid about other personal information, like location or home addresses. But phone numbers? Give me a break.
- Robert Scoble
I get a few calls and several texts every day from people who have discovered my number (I have a tendency to reveal it accidentally on the air). I'd be careful about publishing your number.
- Leo Laporte
If someone calls your phone and stalks you, you have their phone number to give to police.
- Robert Scoble
Leo, do you use Google Voice? That's the only number I ever share, but I'm happy to share it.
- Jesse Stay
Leo: OK, I'll stop stalking YOU and sending you all those texts. Heheh.
- Robert Scoble
Sekhemets: my friends who don't make their phones public still get sales calls. I get crank calls once in a while. I just hang up. It's not that big a deal. But I do get that being a woman is a bit different. It's just that once you get a call from a number that isn't good you would stop answering. It's that simple.
- Robert Scoble
PJ: I guess if you are going to turn into a spammer then you might not want to put your phone number out there.
- Robert Scoble
I don't post my number because I don't like using the phone - just a communication medium that does not fit me well. My wife and kids and my boss have my cell-phone number. Corporations (those that may remind me if I am late with a bill) get the landline number which I never pick up but check the messages about once a day. If you google my name you can find a dozen other ways to contact...
- Bora Zivkovic
Bora: I am just like you. I hate the phone. But there are some times when only a phone call will do. And I've seen so many of those times that I've come to believe that anyone who doesn't share their number with their friends is leaving themselves out of lots of opportunities. I remember the time I got on the BBC. Why? They told me they couldn't get anyone at Microsoft PR to wake up but found my phone number.
- Robert Scoble
Good point. I will have to rethink. For someone so public and constantly online, I need my moments of privacy to be private, emotionally, as in 'incommunicado'. It may miss me some opportunities but I feel I need that for mental health. But have to have my cell-phone with me in case my family needs me.
- Bora Zivkovic
Bora: you don't need to answer your phone if you need some away time.
- Robert Scoble
True that. Hard to break the habit of answering automatically whenever it rings.
- Bora Zivkovic
Bora: part of that is having an iPhone which makes you look at it to answer it. That makes you decide whether or not the call is something you need to take right now. My wife and family have their pictures on the phone, so theirs always get answered, if I'm available.
- Robert Scoble
Bora: if only they supported ringtone sync as well :D
- Mike Chelen
Once I get a Google Voice number and get familiar with the Google Voice features, I may list it as a public phone number. At present, however, my business phone number is only semi-publicized at best, and my home phone number is unlisted. I had some harrassing phone call issues years ago, and another family member had them recently, so it's not worth it to list the more private phone numbers.
- John E. Bredehoft
While Facebook proves that a distributed contact database in which my contacts update their own info is great, I hope that Google Contacts someday will let me give Write authority to everyone in there such that they can update (only) their own records anytime. Then, I'd have a clean, simple updated-by-them Contacts database for all of those folks -- not just my Facebook folks and without all the other Facebook stuff like photos, games, etc. and etc.
- Joel Bush
In addition, I email via Gmail probably 100x as often as via Facebook. Keeping Gmail contact info up to date is key. If I could have the contacts take care of that themselves, as with Facebook, that'd be helpful. Lastly, Gmail search has meant freedom from (Outlook-era) hierarchical folders, so keeping everything in Gmail is fantastic, and receiving forwards from Facebook (with its no-reply) just isn't as clean. So, Facebook proves contact-self-updating cool; let's hope Google goes there, too.
- Joel Bush
Joel: replying through email is one friendfeed feature that facebook could well include. and that is a good point about having contacts update their own info
- Mike Chelen
The automatic sync between my Palm Pre, Google contacts and Facebook keeps my contacts almost flawlessly up to date. Case in point: my friend recently got married and changed her name. When she updated Facebook, My entry for her in my phone automatically updated.
- Mike
I'm in 100% agreement with this. I use a Blackberry, but feel the same way. People keep their info up to date on Facebook for the most part and it sync's to my phone. So do events and birthdays. LOVE it.
- frank barry
I think for this to work for most people, you would need either better trackability from the phone companies, or some kind of screening service integrated into something like Google Voice. I really don't think society is ready for this kind of open information sharing.
- Fergal Barry
"Problem with caller id is cell phones don't broadcast caller id" - umm, then how do you know the incoming number? Maybe you mean the name - ICLID is delivered to your cell phone, CNAM is not, but your cell phone's CNAM is delivered to landline phones. Which can lead to quirks - the name on our family cell phone account is mine, so my wife's cell phone delivers my name to landlines.
- John Craft
I sync my iPhone with GMail contacts, and it works nicely. I also sync it with Facebook, but Facebook's Terms of Service prevent apps from getting my friends phone numbers and putting them into my phone directly. That kinda sorta sucks. Both MyPhone+ and Fex can sync names, birthdays, address info, and photos though. That works nicely.
- Otto
That's up and to the right. I am now reading almost 30 percent more feeds than I was reading a month ago. Bring it on. And RSS powers everything - not just feed readers.
- Louis Gray
Pubsubhubbub is making RSS even faster. RSS is behind FriendFeed, LazyFeed, and every relevant aggregator. This argument is so silly.
- Louis Gray
Twitter's a great basic RSS reader for headlines and more realtime/'now' stuff. Not ditching NetNewsWire/Google Reader for actual post material anytime soon though.
- BeauGiles
I agree, but RSS could do with a few upgrades here and there though (I just want to comment on blogs straight from the feed itself).
- Hugh Isaacs II
Couldn't agree more. Sure, it might turn into more 'plumbing' for many users, but RSS is far from dead.
- Brad Kellett
My headline? RSS: interesting or boring? (Hint @marshallk and @louisgray, we’re not normal)
- Robert Scoble
I never said I was normal. Just that I am kicking ass at my job. :) And that anyone else who wants to ought really read feeds. imho
- Marshall Kirkpatrick
Agree with Marshall (and Scoble). I believe the best information producers are those who consume lots of information. Know your craft and use the best tools.
- Louis Gray
Marshall: you can read the feeds. The real news lately is being broken in Twitter. But I'm glad someone reads all those feeds so I don't have to!
- Robert Scoble
The signal to noise ratio in feeds is 10x to 100x better than Twitter, though. Even if you do prune your list of Twitter folks (as you have), much of what is there is not news-related.
- Louis Gray
Twitter is the news ticker. If you rely on the ticker to inform your opinion of the world... Good luck
- Johnny Worthington
from iPhone
I had no clue why anyone would use Dave Winer's Twitter OPML tool to get all tweets from friends via RSS. But I tried it anyway and discovered that it's easier to find the really relevant stuff when you get tweets via RSS. I can skim through 1,000 tweets in a few minutes and separate the signal from the noise much more efficiently. And, of course, it's all searchable in GReader.
- Dominic Jones
I'm with Louis on this. RSS is far from over. Like Louis, the number of feeds I'm subscribed to is on the increase, too. Services like Lazyfeed and Toluu are making it far easier for me to discover great new content.
- Andrew Terry
RSS is critical to the growth of the social web, and is growing quickly. It will eventually be replaced by friendlier, less protocol centric technologies that shield the user from the mess that is ATOM/RSS etc.
- William Toll
completely agree. google reader is a great feed reader and is getting better GUI wise by the week. great avenue for syndication via friendfeed
- James Butler
from BuddyFeed
Taking into account that Im far from been an expert, I want to leave a thought. What if the way of use is simply different I mean, ok twitter is real time while RSS has some minutes delay, but in any case if I receive 900 hits/day I will not be able to read them all as they come so I dont see the problem on getting some delay. To me is just a question of leaving the noise on Twitter as is much more quick to read and pass through the news & info and get the selected ones on RSS for better storage and record.
- Luis Guijarro
RSS needs a proper comment API, so you can fetch all recent comments on all posts in one call from a blog - with threading if the site supports that.
- Richard Cunningham
That particular person was serving up link bait
- Dave Hodson
Dave: links are dead. Or so says the same person (Steve Gillmor).
- Robert Scoble
I stopped using Google reader a couple of years ago and I now just read it in the stream with my Twitter, Facebook, Flickr mixed in (in FriendBinder [disclosure: I wrote FriendBinder]) I'm not sure why other people don't do something similar.
- Richard Cunningham
Stuart: life streaming is a headline with a link. For the most part.
- Robert Scoble
Google reader is a great tool...if you keep it to only important and feeds that matters to you
- testbeta
louis agreed I love using google reader. great tool.
- (jeff)isageek
I love RSS and losing it would change how I work (and play), but I really wish it would be more mainstream. I work in technical sales and I bet <30% of that group even uses RSS day to day. I bet for the non-techies it is closer to 10%.
- Bill Grant
Love RSS and Reader both, my feed reading is rising day by day!
- Ahad Bokhari
I can't seem to stop reading. Anyone else using Feedly in conjunction with Google Reader?
- ronnieledesma
RSS is an essential part of many things now. The argument is irrelevant and though I'd never say they were wrong, they are misdirected or trying to get a reaction. :)
- James Stratford
I use FF, Twitter and Google Reader for different things. Twitter and FF are far more about Buzz and the conversations around the topics. In Reader I aggregate many different original sources together. There is less need for it to be on-the-spot live, but it needs to be deeper and more detailed to be of value, and it is. They serve different purposes for me.
- Robert
Lately, I've been dumping select Twitter & FF feeds into Google Reader, as well as Posterous feeds, so even though I'm using all of these services, GR has now become more of a hub for me. Also: gReactions gives me a sense of how popular a feed item is. I would wish GR would incorporate these kinds of services so I could get more metadata about a feed item.
- phil baumann
Ughh, no, I believe the RSS is dead mantra arose from the real time Twitter phenomenon, however, us smarties know you gotta verify your sources & our attention spans MORE than the space of 140 characters. Catch that, the dual use of metaphor...attention "spans" MORE...As per myself, I read more articles via RSS feeds than ever as well.
- sofarsoShawn
So am I but not in Google reader, I read mine on my desktop in my e-mail program, they come to me, I don't go 'looking for them' I love RSS!
- Sandra Large
Say, don't Twitter streams have RSS feeds? The icon's right there at the bottom of the sidebar...
- Dennis Jernberg
RSS is very alive and well and dare I say, even young. With tech news, there aren't necessarily thousands of sources like with general business news, etc. Where RSS will be big is in who can create the best filters for those larger niches. But the RSS readers we have today don't support all the features we'd need to create those filters. Google Reader management taps out at maybe 1500 feeds in Chrome, the most of any reader that can export opml (not just rss like Friendfeed).
- beersage
I agree that the problem with RSS is filtering. If something changed the way I use the Net was RSS, but now the volume is so great that unless you prune your feeds regularly you can end up with a lot of garbage. Most average users don't have any idea of what RSS is and that's something that can't cease to amaze me.
- Angel B
RSS & EMAIL are not dead. They are getting better and faster. PUSH tech can push anything. Push Email on mobile devices is just as fast as twitter. And now we are going to PUSH RSS/ATOM. Twitter is different, yet the same. Sure, maybe a news headline will break first on twitter but will I see it before I see it in my inbox or reader? Prob not because I'm not frozen staring at a twitter...

Better than me - sister in law just dropped of HP laptop with Vista and said "it's slower now." so I get to play with the cleaning of spyware and the uninstalling of a billion little apps that HP feels are so necessary that they should be part of startup just to ensure that it takes a full 5-10 minutes before you can use the machine. But I'm not bitter.

According to my following list, Scoble was the second person I followed after joining Twitter. A long time ago that was.

UX tip for FF. Be nice to be able to click on the comment link at the end of a comment stream. Having to scroll back up on these long threads breaks flow.

- Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
FriendFeed is better, deeper, yet Twitter works better on the go
- Majento
There's a lot to like about FF, except it needs a bigger community. Twitter is like the iPhone - for iPhone it's all the applications, with Twitter (and Facebook) it's all about the number of poeple.
- Kevin Krewell
@Sean, that is why we are always looking for new and improved apps to operate at a better level with more consistency. Take it easy! I'm off to bed for my 5 hours of mediocre horizontal time out.

- Dennis Jernberg
Thing I don't like is that FF doesn't have a very good topic when the primary line is directed at twitter. There may or may not be a link to something after FF part. Which means FF becomes a bit of a treasure hunt. I like FF for commentary but I hate the initial post.

- Micah Wittman
Robin: oh yes. But I'm never sure what's worse. the people who just want to talk about the numbers or the people they may be able to impress.

- Andrew Piggott
Dean: your Tweets aren't spam. I might keep you. Heheh.

Robert, care to explain how you use groups in this kind of context? Because I don't get the point of following people who are then placed into a "I don't read this much" kind of group. How do you use groups so that you're (1) not overwhealmed, and (2) actually read what people are saying?
- Ian Betteridge
How many people do you expect to end up with, Robert? What is a reasonable number?
- Lise
You don't have to follow me on Twitter. I think the FriendFeed party palace is mighty fine.
- Josette Torres

(Not that I'll probably see your response, btw - something at the bottom of 350+ responses is effectively buried until FF has better threading tools. Which I'm sure it will, some day.)
- Ian Betteridge
@Daniel - ditto, and for me it is generally development related also. Robert - I know you have to try and keep up with everything going on in the social media space, but I'm always surprised when people follow so many others as it must be extremely difficult to find the wheat in amongst all the chaff.
- Donald Matheson
Robert: I did not know about that search trick. Thanks!
- Menno te Koppele
Ian: a "I don't read this much" kind of group is awesome for serrendipity. Also, anyone who I find there who is high value gets quickly moved to a smaller group.
- Robert Scoble
What? Are you saying you're not following me already...? ;-)
- Jarno Peschier
Lise: on Twitter? Less than 2,000. I can't follow more.
- Robert Scoble
Jamo: I am already following you. Scott: why not? I am already following you too.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, it might be a problem for me re-gaining your following as my tweets are not 100% English only (whether that means trying to speak English or no English at all ;). How do you deal with occasional non-English tweeters? As that's clearly a noise for you.
- Tibor Holoda
if only twitter were as engaging as FriendFeed has become, and as instantaneous as things like this comment thread, then maybe I would use it more. Hence why I'm all for unfollowing who you conceive as uninteresting; and if that includes me, then so be it!
- Nick Soden
Tibor: I just skip over most of them. Sometimes I translate them to see if I was right.

Robert, but you're following commenters here, not on Twitter, right? Not that i care about Twitter that much, as for me it's just a pipeline. FF and FB are conversational platforms for me, or the places i hang out these days.

Spammers being blocked doesnt do anything as they are hoping for that 1 in 100 hit of someone clicking that link, eventually they get banned and create a new account.

Des: on FriendFeed you can do both strategies at the same time. You can follow a lot more in one list while following even fewer in another.

Des - Once more people re-engage in the conversation here, they'll realize the continuing outright potential of Friendfeed. I still some here before I read my e-mail

Hi Mr Scoble, I'm with you (but on a smaller scale) I unfollowed about 150 users on Friday, felt good! I pretty much hang out in FF now at my home page and my groups

Good luck on hiding from the bots, they have ways of finding people.... :)

well, who am I to refuse such a nice offer? here I am!!!

Good to hear! I have only ~2000 followers, but I can't follow more at the moment due to Twitter's follow limit rule.

Great way to test the chemistry between FF and Twitter. I like it.

Robert - I'am definitely not a spammer when it comes to broadcasting anything to people, who doesn't want to hear it :) but I do sometimes respond (mostly on twitter so @reply) to some tweets not aimed on me, but that's what everybody actually asks for when publicly broadcasting anything.

Shhh...don't tell anyone but I'm neither of those (the spammers, SEO experts, the bots, or the social media experts,) though, I like the heck out of the concept of this thread...

Good idea about the unfollow. It was an interesting experiment whilst it lasted but given your lifestyle I'm sure most Twitter messages just passed you by. I never DM'd you however, it was nice to think that I had the option if I wanted to. Anyway I've been on FF for ages now, and what I need is a good FF app (for pc), any ideas anyone?

Nick: I just use a browser with FriendFeed.

Only 530 comments so far? Come on people you are not even trying.
- John Cooper
@Rob Sellen, did you see the comments on the most recent ffundercats podcast entry. http://friendfeed.com/ffunder... Over 1000 in a very short period of time. Although I expect that this post will also get up to those levels.
- Travis Koger
NOTICE: I am closing comments here because I gotta get some sleep. I'll consider doing this again sometime. Sorry if you didn't get in, but see you tomorrow night.

BeauGiles: There's still a few adult Twitter volunteers who remembered that stunt with the private rooming of @bushfires which took away from the hashtag version and how you claimed credit for it without asking any of the rest of us who actually did the work.
