Pyura chilensis: the closest thing to getting blood from a stone | Running Ponies, Scientific American Blog Network

LOL @ tomato thunderegg. Pyura chilensis look so weird and cool. I don't know if I'd be brave enough to eat one, though. - Jennifer Dittrich
LOL. I'd try one (cooked). - John (bird whisperer)
Hmm. I could probably be talked into it; I've eaten bugs, on purpose. This can't be too much weirder, right? Now I just need to get to Chile. - Jennifer Dittrich
Probably nothing too wrong with eating it. It's related to the violet (vee-o-lay) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki..., I think, which is another sea squirt and is listed in my 1001 Foods You Must Taste Before You Die book. Someone says it tastes "soapy" on one site... Or like iodine. (What does that taste like?) I was just guessing about it being related. Turns out I was right. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... Technology - Rebecca J. Rosen - Get Ready, Because Voyager I Is *This Close* to Leaving Our Solar System - The Atlantic
"Last week, in the corners of the Internet devoted to outer space, things started to get a little, well, hot. Voyager 1, the man-made object farthest away from Earth, was encountering a sharp uptick in the number of a certain kind of energetic particles around it. Had the spacecraft become the first human creation to "officially" leave the solar system?" - Maitani from Bookmarklet
"It's hard to overstate how wild an accomplishment this would be: A machine, built here on Earth by the brain- and handiwork of humans, has sailed from Florida, out of Earth's orbit, beyond Mars, beyond the gas giants of Jupiter and Saturn, and may now have left the heliosphere -- tiny dot in the universe beholden to our sun. Had it really happened? How would we know?" - Maitani
"Are we there yet?" - Adrian

HyperDog Ball Launchers | Cool Material
"Fido does a lot of important things for you. He makes you feel better. He can fetch you beers. He keeps your feet warm at night. Playing catch with him (or her) is one way you get to return the favor, but it has its downsides. The ball gets slimy. You throw out your shoulder. You barely have enough time to take a sip of your beer before he’s back and panting for more. Enter the HyperDog Ball Launcher. It’s basically a giant slingshot designed to be used for tennis balls and made out of steel. Shoot (accurately) up to 200ft and then enjoy a few moments of peace. When the ball does get returned to you, pick it up hands free and avoid the slobbery kiss on your palm. Even if you don’t have a dog, there are plenty of other good uses for a slingshot of this caliber. $15" - Me from Bookmarklet

Watergate 40 Years Later - The Lessons of Watergate Do Not Belong to Us - Esquire
"Looking back now, how very little we came to learn from it. The purported "lessons" of Watergate lasted only a little longer than the cover-up did. The theories of exalted executive power with which Nixon justified his crimes to the nation and in his own tortured mind, and which he ably described later to David Frost as "When the president does it, that means it is not illegal," have become firmly entrenched in our government in the decades since the Watergate pageant closed and, as a self-governing citizenry, we seem to be generally fine with that." - Andrew C (✔) from Bookmarklet
"If the "lessons" of Watergate really were that "the system worked," and that "the people" triumphed, then Ronald Reagan wouldn't have survived Iran-Contra, George W. Bush wouldn't have gotten away with what his campaign did in Florida, let alone what he and Dick Cheney did once they got into office, and Barack Obama would be under more heat than he's under right now for continuing so... more... - Andrew C (✔)
"Instead, the true "lessons" of Watergate were how we could abandon our responsibilities as citizens, and twist the obligations of self-government, so that "the country" would never have to "go through" anything like that again. [...] The lasting "lesson" of Watergate, it appears, is that self-government was too dangerous, that the perils of it outweigh its values, and that the obligations of citizenship, beyond those which are purely ceremonial, are too heavy for citizens to bear." - Andrew C (✔)

I want him too. And Spidra, if you want Plum and/or Indiana you need to adopt Carmen. My guess is that she is going to come out somewhere in between the two of them. And since they have a few things in common already she should be pretty close. However she needs lots of space to get in trouble and preferably a companion. "Spy planes able to photograph sunbathers in their back gardens are being deployed by Google and Apple. The U.S. technology giants are racing to produce aerial maps so detailed they can show up objects just four inches wide. But campaigners say the technology is a sinister development that brings the surveillance society a step closer. Google admits it has already sent planes over cities while Apple has acquired a firm using spy-in-the-sky technology that has been tested on at least 20 locations, including London. Apple’s military-grade cameras are understood to be so powerful they could potentially see into homes through skylights and windows. The technology is similar to that used by intelligence agencies in identifying terrorist targets in Afghanistan." - Bluesun 2600 from Bookmarklet

OUPblog » Blog Archive » After ‘shrimp’ comes ‘prawn’
"Several people pointed out to me that I cannot distinguish a shrimp from a prawn, and I am afraid they are right. The picture copied for the shrimp post had the title “Shrimp cocktail,” but the shrimp there are too big and are really prawns. In any case, I decided to atone for my mistake and write a post on the etymology of prawn. This plan was hard to realize, because the origin of prawn is really, that is, hopelessly unknown: the word exists, but no one can say where it has come from. It is strange that more or less the same holds for shrimp and shark, though both are less opaque. There must have been some system behind calling those sea creatures. The fishermen who coined such names had a reason to call a shrimp a shrimp and a prawn a prawn." - Maitani from Bookmarklet
"Despite the obscurity that enshrouds prawn, it may be useful to sum up what people thought about its origin, even though the final solution is out of reach (and how many solutions in etymology can be called final?). Characteristically, the earliest English etymologists did not include prawn in their dictionaries. Even the great Franciscus Junius, who mentioned it, could not offer any... more... - Maitani
