"At 27 percent alcohol by volume, Utopias is the strongest beer ever made, edging into the spirits category. Yet there is no distillation involved -- just the regular method of fermentation using the typical beer ingredients of malt, hops, yeast and water. There is one catch, however -- the suggested retail price is $150 per 24-ounce bottle. Cue the sputtering in incredulous indignation."

"Attracting drinkers with the promise of warmer, flatter beer may seem like a tough sell. But in the case of cask ales, this old-school way of serving brew has become all the rage among St. Louis' beer lovers."

"Schlafly brewers get a very special present from the St. Louis Brewery when they get married, they get to brew a wedding beer. Brewer Drew Huerter will be getting married at the end of November and decided to brew an English style Old Ale in celebration of this event."

"Years ago, I used to argue that Belgium was the best country for beer, not my birth country of Germany which everyone assumed. But lately I’ve come to believe we were all wrong. Despite making nothing but the worst mass-produced horse swill for the half-century that followed Prohibition, the U.S. is now the greatest nation on earth when it comes to beer."

Long Trail Double Bag: not a bad beer at $3/bomber
"Finally, a man in a minivan pulls in and parks alongside the Dumpsters for glass containers. He unloads his bottles quickly, stuffing his hands in the pockets of his red jacket. This facility isn't close to his home, he says, but he's willing to haul his waste here anyway. "We're committed to recycling," he says of his family. He isn't typical. Kansas Citians recycle just 18 percent of their household trash. The national average is nearly twice that: 34 percent. Dig into those statistics a little deeper, and local residents are at the bottom of the heap when it comes to recycling glass."

@chadyakobson Wow, I see 60, 70, & 80 in BJCP style but no 90. I've seen so many 90 Shilling beers and they are all appear to be infringing.
This afternoon, KB called Founders head brewer Jeremy Kosmicki to find out more. He said: "I'm really not at liberty to give anything else out" (which, for the record, is a terrible phrase to use when the person asking the question is actually named "Liberty"). It was reported in June that Nemesis would be out in December, but Kosmicki said that won't happen now. Whatever it is, don't expect to see it on tap or in bottles until at least late February or early March."

"As we mentioned, the Lagerheads have been reading The Naked Pint by Christina Perozzi and Hallie Beaune, in anticipation of meeting them this week (which you can do Tuesday night at ChurckKey). The book naturally appeals to women because it is written by two female beer experts, and when you’re into something not that many other women are into, it’s nice to be able to reach out to each other."

"Nowadays, for a craft beer to get any kind of buzz, it has to be high in alcohol, hard to get or full of exotic ingredients. Will Shelton hopes to change that philosophy. The owner of the High & Mighty Brewing Company in Belchertown wants lower alcohol beers, or session beers, to get the respect they deserve alongside their higher-in-alcohol siblings."

"This Saturday, he'll release Michael, a barrel aged Belgian sour brewed in honor of the late Brit beer writer Michael Jackson. As the Beer Hunter, Jackson did more than anybody to restore interesting beers to our attention by unearthing great breweries and beers at a time when consolidation was all the rage and pale industrial lagers were all most of us knew. Jackson helped save good beer; and he was a staunch fan of Hair of the Dog beers and considered them among the world's best. Also: new bottlings of Cherry Adam from the Wood, Fred from the Wood, Doggie Claws, Blue Dot, Ruth, Adam and Fred, some vintage bottles, as well as Magnums and three-liter bottles of Doggie Claws and the wood-aged beers, plus brewery logo wear and other items."

..."Which leaves a crucial couple of hours to hunt for an aesthetic experience that's much harder to find: a taste of the beer known as cask ale. Served "live," without pasteurization or carbonation, it offers way more for the senses and brain to work on than any of its cousins merely served on tap. As far as I'm concerned, cask ale is to standard draft what raw-milk cheddar is to Kraft Singles, or an Andy Warhol to a Thomas Kinkade."

"It was only five years ago that Ron Jeffries opened Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, a microbrewery northeast of Ann Arbor in the small village of Dexter. In the midst of a craft beer movement sweeping across North America and beer store shelves full of choice imports, Jeffries gambled that regional consumers were ready for beer made with a brewing philosophy closer to 19th century Europe than here and now. He couldn't have been more right."

'Ten years ago I might have said it was set to disappear. Now there's great expansion of traditional brewing and blending,' said Tim Webb, author of the Good Beer Guide Belgium."
