"So, if you own over 70% of the search market, you are planning to release a new language that allows you to build faster and more concurrent servers that all talk this new faster SPDY standard, and you are saying that speed will be a part of your ranking algorithm for search results, you are using the monopoly hammer. "
- Gary Burd
Do you agree with this? I tend to think that moving the Web toward faster load times and faster data transfer between services is a good thing in general, regardless of whether this benefits Google or not.
- Louis Gray
Yes, I agree, especially as per the new programming language mentioned in the article, it will shift the spectrum to their advantage, not overnight but slowly and surely, in large part due to the fact that they own so the most popular domains/real estate out there so if you wanna be a player in the game you'll have to speak the language. And don't forget it's computer operating system coming out shortly.
- sofarsoShawn
The anti-trust question will be whether it benefits Google to the detriment of its competitors, due to Google's market power. But of course the defense is that it's all open-source, so the playing field is level.
- LogEx
I find it disturbing how the genuine interest of Google engineers to make the user experience on the internet better is construed as something that could be interpreted as 'evil'. Now even open sourcing an experimental programming language some interested engineers were toying with is interpreted as hint for evilness.
- Henner Zeller
Henner, It has nothing to do with Google engineers and their genuine interests, it has to do with how Google will pay for said engineers. I've got no problem with faster load times, I'm just not sure it should be tied to page rank. If Google was non-profit we wouldn't be having this discussion!!
- Chris Myles
sometimes technology evolves slowly or stagnates as no player on the market is able to push a change strong enough to do a difference. its quite great to see a example where good engineers propose a logical improvement for all with the power behind it to make it reality.
- Marco Hennings
The idea is not whether Google is pure evil, but people need to start thinking about what they are doing. Creating "faster standards" and changing your search results rankings based on page load times is not a big deal, until you look at their search monopoly. Is it evil or possibly illegal? I am not sure, but they are definitely in a different position than they used to be. If we keep...

Agree with Chris, not sure load time should be factoring in to page rank. That is the only thing in all these new initiatives that is a concern. It is biasing the game in favor of people who can afford the fastest infrastructure, not the people that put out the most interesting content.
- Ed Millard
The could open up a Linux bar next door so you can dual boot your Friday nights but the Linux bar would quickly go out of business because those people don't like to pay for things.

Now you can get two different types of viruses from the same bar!

"I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that. " - Lloyd Dobler
OMG. This actually ended up in my dream last night.

Okay, this is weird...I'm listening to Sylvester's "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" on last.fm and the alien is throbbing in precise time with the beat.

On my facebook.......the big Bad Wolf said "I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down."the little piggy said "F**k off or I'll sneeze on you"
"The black and white patrol cars headed out at 10 p.m. carrying hundreds of officers from nearly every law enforcement agency in Orange County. Their mission: round up minors out after curfew, put them on a jail bus and scare them. Sgt. Mike Haggerty and Investigator Brian Browne of the Anaheim Police Department's gang unit headed straight to neighborhoods known for gang crime. About 10:15 p.m. they came across their first offender -- Andres, a 17-year-old senior who will be going to Cal State Fullerton next fall. He was headed home after visiting an aunt."

Seems like they target Latino neighborhoods. Figures.
- Anika
Selective enforcement is problematic.
- Stephen Mack
I heard they round them up and take them to raves... force them to dance. Awful stuff. :(
- Adrian
10pm seems incredibly early for a curfew (although I admit I'm ambivalent about a curfew for minors, period). I wouldn't have been able to work ANY of the jobs I had in High School with the curfew, nor participate in either marching band or theatre tech.
- Soup
I know, Soup. I was thinking the same thing. I know from talking to friends and hearing them complain about teens being drunk and obnoxious in their suburban enclaves that they're not doing much to enforce the curfew fairly.
- Anika
The fairness issue is an important point, Anika. As far as the drunken kids thing goes, why not pick them up for that as opposed to just being outside?

""Dollhouse" is closing its doors at Fox. The network has canceled Joss Whedon's cult fave, which in May beat the odds with a second-season pickup despite low ratings. The sci-fi series, which is filming episode 11, is expected to finish its 13-episode order. After some dismal performance in the fall, despite the ratings bumps "Dollhouse" got from DVR viewing, Fox benched the show for the November sweep after four episodes. It is not clear whether Fox will air the remaining episodes starting Dec. 4 as planned."

Well, Joss, I hope you've learned your lesson: don't make any more shows for Fox!
- josh neff, Fun Dip of FF
Oh well. I enjoyed the show but it had its flaws. I never got comfortable with Dushku's acting or the grauitous shots of Actives.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
haha. I knew that would be cancelled. First episode, it just seemed messed up. *Back to Lost....*
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
:( son of a bitch...just yeah. mother fucking son of a bitch. (and people...the first five episodes sucked...if you left before it got better...your loss)
- aden (yeah you heard me)
I generally really like Joss and I tend to follow Mutant Enemy staffers around from show to show, but I really couldn't get into Dollhouse. There were a few good episodes towards the end, but the pacing was all off for me. I expected more.
- joey
Knew this was going to happen from the beginning... One: Its Fox, hence they fuck with schedules all the damn time. Two: Its a SciFi. Fox + Scifi = "This dog won't hunt." Three: Its Joss Whedon. When you put Fox + Joss Whedon SciFi = Not going to last at all. When will Joss learn that Fox is a horrible Production partner?
- CW™
let's just hope that Joss takes the lumps, and then finishes the story online. Because seriously? If I can't see the lead up to Epitaph 1, I am going to be very unhappy.
- aden (yeah you heard me)
Maybe he'll get to move to another network.
- joey
I will miss the show. I have to say Fox gave it every chance, this time around. The renewal for season 2 was unexpected given how low the ratings were.
- Stephen Mack
They did their best to make sure that it withered on the vine...
- J. Abdul-Qahhar
Oh well. Can't wait to see what Joss has in store with his next Fox show...since he never leaves that company.
- Jon, the Beartato of FF
Jon, he had a contract with them. It may be over now. I can't remember what I read about it. Yay for useless comments.
- joey
When will HBO or Showtime just pick up a dark sex show and put Whedon in charge of it? Think how much better Dollhouse would of been with more adult content?
- CW™
I always figured Fox is the only network that will give Joss the time of day. Surely he's not going to them because he expects great things...
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Dollhouse's biggest problem was season one. The good episodes in S1 and all of S2 were all character driven for characters I never really gave two craps about, and still don't. :(
- Jon, the Beartato of FF
DJP, I think Joss actually *does* get interest from other networks. Although the fans can't forgive Fox for past transgressions, it seems Joss was willing to. When he talks about the people he made the deal with, he talks with respect. The problem is that in the industry one doesn't always get to continue working with the same players you made the deal with. I came to like Dollhouse...

Yeah, whatever unholy contract Whedon has with Fox needs to be broken and right now. He can't keep working for a network that kneecaps him every time he comes up with an advanced concept that entails more than a little thought.
- Steven Perez
Just read that it's not "cancelled" per say. Fox stressed that it wasn't. They're just capping the second season at 13 episodes. It's still going to air all of them too. It doesn't look good for the show though.
- James Ferguson
Deserves it for killing Kitty Pryde in a truly awful story, plus he's crap!
- Simon Curran
James: I read that, too. That is press agent speak for "cancelled". You don't cap episodes of a show you want to keep around, especially one with an arc spanning the season.
- Steven Perez
*waits to see if Joss will comment on Whedonesque*
- joey
I think Dusku was the one that has the contract. I think Joss is free to go with the show.
- Amber, Random Time Lord
Steven, sometimes I hate being optimistic. :(
- James Ferguson
Regardless of whomever may be to blame for the show's flaws, I will always believe that DOLLHOUSE was doomed to failure before it ever got started. And that's a real shame, considering the level at which it asked us to think.
- Steven Perez
Update: Joss Whedon posted this comment over at Whedonesque (thanks for the heads up, Bonnie!): mm. Apparently my news is not news. I don't have a lot to say. I'm extremely proud of the people I've worked with: my star, my staff, my cast, my crew. I feel the show is getting better pretty much every week, and I think you'll agree in the coming months. I'm grateful that we got to put it...

sad to see another Whedon show die an early death. at least he knows when it's ending so he can give it a proper send-off.
- Nathan Chase
A proper send-off? Only so much you can do in two episodes. :-/
- Tanath
Not a shock to me, it wasn't a great show from the few episodes I dragged myself through.
