So let’s talk traffic. We’ve got people who love this goddamn phone so much that they’re living on it. Yes, that’s crushing your network. Yes, 3% of your users are taking up 40% of your bandwidth. You see this as a bad thing. It’s not. It’s a good thing. It’s a blessing. It’s an indication that people love what we’re doing, which means you now have a reason to go out and double or triple or quadruple your damn network capacity. Jesus! I can’t believe I’m explaining this to you. You’re in the business of selling bandwidth. That pipe is what you sell. Right now what the market is telling you is that you can sell even more! Lots more! Good Lord. The world is changing, and you’re right in the sweet spot.

Social media (a descriptive yet still ambiguous term) is often treated like it’s a mysterious thing. It’s not. You have several major distribution points online where people are interacting — among them Facebook and Twitter. Reviews and recommendations (word of mouth) are being disseminated in many cases through these distribution points. People are getting the information and taking action accordingly. Twitter for example has become an important distribution point for deals and coupons. People fundamentally want credible information about products (and services) — rather than ads and claims — and they want to save money. Consumers are finding this information on social media sites, among other places online. Makes sense.

On one end you have AOL and their Toyota Strategy of building thousand of niche content sites via the work of cast-offs from old media. That leads to a whole lot of really, really crappy content being highlighted right on the massive AOL home page. Hiring a bunch of people who couldn’t keep their old media jobs and don’t have the stomach to go out on their own and then slapping little or no editorial oversight onto these masses of sub-par journalists leads to an inevitable conclusion – cheap, crappy content. And that crappy content is given a massive audience on the AOL portal. On the other end you have Demand Media and companies like it. See Wired’s “Demand Media and the Fast, Disposable, and Profitable as Hell Media Model.” The company is paying bottom dollar to create “4,000 videos and articles” a day, based only on what’s hot on search engines.

* We've built a great culture. Yes, it's still a job. But for most of our team members most of the time, they like work, they like their colleagues, and they have a fun and engaging time at work. That's worth its weight in gold to me

"In the 2nd holiday drop from Play Cloths they have juxtaposed the military and lumberjack themes that are so prevalent in clothing collections this season to create two unique pieces. The first one is the Bearcat Plaid bomber hat. The hat is available in a red or black plaid. The inside is covered in soft quilted nylon. The ear flaps and brim are lined with sherpa. Lastly they have not skimped on the details with logo buttons, a small label on the back and embroidered exclamation points of the flaps. The second piece is the Spiffy Flannel Work shirt. Now everyone has done a flannel or two this season but this one really stands out from the crowd. Forgoing the usual soft and fuzzy flannel they worked with a heavy duty horse blanket fabric that has a brushed lining on the inside for comfort. The cuffs have their signature exclamation points embroidered around them. In keeping with the collection they have added featuring some of the logos featured in this collection. Lastly we have a...

Few know that he’s been wearing them for two years and has ordered over four dozen pairs by now. “I just like being a kid,” he said with a grin. “I enjoy it, I don’t want to grow up.”

At Hunch, we’re big fans of Vark. But Hunch and Vark are very different products. On Vark, a question is asked by one person to another, and so natural language queries are used. Hunch is like Wikipedia for decisions, so on Hunch you’re searching for a topic that already exists. Erick used the query “What is a good place for a restaurant in the flatiron district in New York?” for his query above, which is appropriate for Vark, but not for Hunch. However, if you search on Hunch for “flatiron restaurants” you would be shown this topic, which delivers a great experience. So good, in fact, that 90% of our users answer all questions and get to the result page. Like Wikipedia, Hunch is not a search engine. We should definitely have good, even great search (the Hell’s Kitchen restaurants should not have come up), but our strong suit is not search.

Here are a number of publicly available social media policies and guidelines for corporations, nonprofits and media companies. In some cases, we’ve reproduced them on this site because of how often they get moved around or dislodged. In addition, these are historical documents and as such will be analyzed, reviewed, compared and critiqued on a regular basis here in the years ahead. To do so, we need access to the original source material and so will post them here for archival and educational purposes. When devising a social media policy, a good place to start is Best practices for developing a social media policy. Developed by the Society for New Communications Research, it addresses the major issues related to employee blogging but its principles can be applied to more recent forms of social networking as well. All such policies need careful tailoring, depending on what sector your company is in.

image Within the analyst world the past year has been a dichotomy in the land of blogging. Whereas we have seen a surge in the number of analysts that have taken to this medium, it is contrasted with a decrease from the recognised ‘leaders’ in the frequency of which they post. This new ranking system has fundamentally evolved since the last version to take into account the seismic shifts in the way people communicate online. The key changes relate to inbound links such as from Twitter as well as well as a combined Yahoo / Google (3-month date limited) approach.
