That's a when not if scenario. It'll usher in passive use and the internet's true migration will more or less be complete. However, social networks positioned properly will be at an advantage -- the utility play on the internet platform is something people haven't evolved to understand yet and that'll play a big part in the future. I think Twitter stands to survive more in this environment IF it plays its cards well versus something like Myspace or Facebook, which are not going to be as agile.

I disagree that blogs are out of fashion. I just use mine differently now. It's got more of my musing, my favorite photos, etc. I view it as the center of my online existence, with everything else radiating out.

Blogs are not out of fashion; having one just no longer makes you unique or interesting; people who blog now are hardly pariahs; Huffington Post could IPO with just a blog site and they are growing; so more to the point, what will we do when twitter and FF no longer make us unique/cool techies.

"blogs are completely out of fashion" is not the real situation. millions of blogs are written and read, they are not effected by face and twit. also they are in different leagues, not each other's rival. one for generally 2 way comminucation, the other for 1 way.

Just posted on Rubel's blog that I think blogs have a long way to go before they are out of fashion. There are very few plugins for customizing the user experience based on search terms, intent and various personalization schemes. When blogs reconfigure themselves to present what's important to me and we get sick of that, maybe it's time to move on. Or just do what everyone in the world is doing and stick everything in Facebook (that is going to be a nightmare to undo though).

It is nothing like any US election ever. The political system in Iran is entirely different and it's a mixture of religion, non-elected officials and democracy. The non-elected officials hold most of the power. The fact that they are not all on the same page is very significant.

yes absolutely. i am still using the original iPhone, which I have to say still works great for being two years old. I didn't see that much of an advantage to upgrading when the first 3G came out, but now there seems to be enough new features that it makes it worth it.

@Jandy AT&T's upgrade policy is no different than any other cell carrier's policy, in making you wait 2 years before upgrading for a greatly reduced price. I am excited that they're subsidizing at all actually; when I bought my original iPhone there wasn't any subsidizing and I paid full-price *and* was locked into a 2-year contract. If you ask me, their policy now is a lot better than it was then.

Tyler - you are just flat out wrong. A jailbroken iPhone won't have: autofocus camera (of higher quality), builtin compass, be ready for next gen data networks (up to 7mps), have a faster processor & better battery. I'm upgrading from a 1st gen so the diff is big if I had a 3G it might be closer

@Jennifer, I know, and I agree that the initial iPhone customers got screwed, too. But just because it's an industry standard doesn't mean I have to agree with it or like it. I haven't jailbroken because I was hoping to get a new handset with video support, but I may jailbreak instead in the meantime and pick up the new handset when my contract is up.

No - bad working out by o2 with regard to current 3g owners and the length of their contracts. I'm guessing they know hardcore Apple fans will buy out the remainder of their contract to get the new phone. That, I'm not going to do. I don't have £464 upfront to end my current contract and purchase the new handset.

I'll upgrade. My battery on my old one is getting tired, and the resell value of the old 3G phone (i.e. which will be unlocked and have no contract) should be decent enough to offset the cost of a new one. I sold my v. 1 on ebay, after one year of use, for the same price as a new v.2

Used 3Gs will have some resale value because they can be unlocked. Folks have wanted faster 3G phones but the way they were sold in the US (tied to a 2 year contract at the time of purchase) made it difficult to get them for the unlocked market.

TV is dead. Time delays are dead. In Canada, they don't allow local broadcasting of election results until your region's polls have closed. The Internet has killed that old-fashioned idea. Time delay TV is so 1988.

Comcast added two special Olympic channels in the HD section--one for basketball and one for soccer. There is also Universal HD which has some coverage, USA Network, Oxygen, CNBC and MSNBC, and Telemundo. I'd spin around to see if you can find anything live at the moment (I think there is a basketball game on now).

Have you tried nbcolympics.com? I know they are having some events live. Personally I don't have a problem with the delay. With a choice of the races being broadcast live but not seeing them and being able to see the delay I'll take the delay.

If you want live, unfortunetly the only way is through the web. And they are raw feeds using MS Silverlight. So if your willing to deal with that you can get all of the events in a pop-up window on your computer. : |

On the West coast in .au we are use to 2hr delay for most sporting events, but not the Olympics. Appears to be live at, least on SBS the "complementary" broadcaster, time to settle down for 3 hours of the womens cycling road race.

whenever the olympics take place on the other side of the world most events aren't shown live. This is not about broadcasting the olympics as a public service. It's about NBC making their money back. You do understand the relationship between ad rates and prime-time, right? The Internet takes away any suspense about the olympics when they are held on the other side of the world. You ain't gonna get live from NBC. Too much money at risk.

part of the coverage is live at least on the east coast. there has been some effort to schedule a few important US events in the morning a la Phelps so that they can be seen live on primetime

Adding insult to injury, my rather capable PowerPC Mac can't even access the Olympics on nbcolympics.com. It's using an Intel-only version of Silverlight. Trying CBC and other foreign networks online all reject me because of my American IP, and I haven't found a successful proxy server that'll let me stream.
