The Scientific 7-Minute Workout - NYTimes.com
"Exercise science is a fine and intellectually fascinating thing. But sometimes you just want someone to lay out guidelines for how to put the newest fitness research into practice. An article in the May-June issue of the American College of Sports Medicine’s Health & Fitness Journal does just that. In 12 exercises deploying only body weight, a chair and a wall, it fulfills the latest mandates for high-intensity effort, which essentially combines a long run and a visit to the weight room into about seven minutes of steady discomfort — all of it based on science." - Betsy #TeamMonique from Bookmarklet
Quoting one of the comments: "A PDF of the complete article is available for free at http://journals.lww.com/acsm-he.... Scroll down and you'll find the link. In detail, the roughly 7 minute workout (closer to 8 as noted by another reader) is the bare minimum. The authors say that two or three circuits would be appropriate for some. My concern about this... more... - Betsy #TeamMonique
Another comment: "Reviewing the comments, I see a great many that speak to things such possible injuries; not for the elderly; the infirm, etc, etc. Granted, for non-athletes, it's pretty intimidating. Maybe it's not for you. Okay. But if you'd like to give it a shot: Don't bite off the entire program at the outset. There's no hurry. Start slowly. Take a few months to incorporate every... more... - Betsy #TeamMonique
Puzzling. Woke up to find the water supply line to the toilet had leaked overnight. The bath mat had absorbed most of it. After work, I turned the water back on to find the leak, so I can fix it. Nothing's leaking. Yay, and grrrr. I have an old towel under there, just in case, so I can identify it if it returns.
The water line is fine. I think what actually happened is I left the shower curtain outside the tub instead of inside (I remember moving it out of the way to check out the water line) and then didn't notice the water dripping off the curtains till the next morning. So that's solved. While I was at it, I did figure out why the toilet runs and fixed that. So double yay. - Betsy #TeamMonique

"Home | Chicopee, MA, USA | (We have recently moved into a new house across from a family with lots of kids. The neighbor comes over, and points to me playing in the yard.) Neighbor: “Is that your oldest daughter?” Mom: “Well, sort of; she’s the only one.” Neighbor: “You have boys then?” Mom: “Nope, just her.” (The neighbor suddenly looks sad.) Neighbor: “Oh, you just have the one?” Mom: “Yeah, I did it right the first time.” (The neighbor never mentioned my only-child status again.)" - Betsy #TeamMonique from Bookmarklet
My Toastmasters speech today was successful. I didn't have an ending, and they called me on it, but they liked everything else. Yay!
Every time I see one of those pictures of hanging bikes and I think of doing it, I wonder whether people get brained by the pedals all the time. I mean, they stick out. A lot.

Garbage Truck Full Of Educational Scratch-N-Sniff Natural Gas Cards Freaks Town Out – Consumerist - http://consumerist.com/2013...
"Responsible thing: An energy company sending out scratch-and-sniff cards that smell like natural gas so customers can learn to identify the smell in case of a leak. Unfortunate thing: An entire box of said cards compressed in a garbage truck that then travels through town and makes residents think there’s a widespread gas leak." - Betsy #TeamMonique from Bookmarklet

Technically speaking, I have visited these states. I change planes in Atlanta. I drove through West Virginia. I crossed the river and slept in Minnesota. Oh wait, I could've added Missouri: I forgot about the Doctor Who convention St. Louis years ago. - Betsy #TeamMonique
Shoot. I didn't remember I had a speech draft to write until it was almost gym time. So, no gym tonight. But I have a passable draft.

Started reading "Wool" last night. Don't know anything about it. I must've put in on hold and forgotten about it. Was going to read only 10 minutes this morning, but I just noticed it's been an hour. So far, very good.

Mix-up at piracy talk as WI put on fancy dress | World news | The Guardian
"[Colin] Darch, a retired sailor from North Devon, has written a book about his experience of being kidnapped by pirates in 2008 and often gives talks on the subject. [...] "Since I was released five years ago, I have spoken at a lot of conferences and serious events about the dangers of piracy and how to survive," he said. "More recently, since writing the book, I have been taking to Rotary groups, Probus clubs and the occasional [Women's Institute]. "When I arrived there were ladies with blue rinses wearing pirate hats and waving swords around. They had been led to believe it was a talk about piracy through the ages and not something right up to date. "I think they were worried I might be a bit upset that they were trivialising it, but I thought it was funny." - Betsy #TeamMonique from Bookmarklet

Florida Teen Girl Charged With Felony After Science Experiment Goes Bad - Miami - News - Riptide 2.0
"Kiera Wilmot got good grades and had a perfect behavior record. She wasn't the kind of kid you'd expect to find hauled away in handcuffs and expelled from school, but that's exactly what happened after an attempt at a science project went horribly wrong. On 7 a.m. on Monday, the 16 year-old mixed some common household chemicals in a small 8 oz water bottle on the grounds of Bartow High School in Bartow, Florida. The reaction caused a small explosion that caused the top to pop up and produced some smoke. No one was hurt and no damage was caused. According to WTSP, Wilmot told police that she was merely conducting a science experiment. Though her teachers knew nothing of the specific project, her principal seems to agree." - Betsy #TeamMonique from Bookmarklet
