"It's been almost a full year since we heard a peep from the fine folks at Myka, but it looks like we could be talking about 'em a lot more often judging by the specs list on its latest contraption. The simply-titled ION is an Atom-based media PC that relies on NVIDIA's Ion graphics set and a customized interface that brings Hulu, Boxee and pretty much any other web content you can stumble upon to your television. Within, you'll find a 1.6GHz dual-core Atom 330 CPU, up to 4GB of RAM, ten USB 2.0 ports, VGA / DVI / HDMI outputs, an eSATA connector, Ethernet and plenty of audio outputs. The fanless design ensures that things remain quiet, and for those oozing cash, a Blu-ray drive, HDD and WiFi module can be implanted. It's up for order right now starting at $379, but you'll be stuck waiting four to six weeks for delivery."

While you're at it, stop keeping a fucking hardcopy of apps. Keep a simple text log of what I've downloaded and just re-download when I want to load out my iPhone.

I invariably don't sync because I refuse to strip and burn all my data just to add ONE SONG. Because of this I've lost important information. Speaking of which, I don't think my Notes get synced - which is where I keep a lot of random yet essential info. And I've lost this before >:( Really it's all just a ploy for me to buy a MobileMe account, and I hate being taken for a mug.

This whole issue is all the more ridiculous when you understand that Home Sharing is basically what I want but for portable devices! Fingers crossed someone realises this and creates a nifty hack to fool iTunes into wirelessly sharing to my iPhone. </hint>

I've been calling for wireless syncing since I rolled with an iPod Video!

Hear, hear. Wifi sync is long overdue. I'm thinking their trying to protect the Apple TV and the 4 people that use it.

I had BT and infrared syncing on a WM phone 4-5 years ago! C'mon Apple catch up...

OMG! I LOVE THIS THREAD. seriously fucking sick of them holding back on basic stuff. C'mon Cupertino!

WiFi sync could be a massive drain on the iPhone battery.
- Bill Sodeman
True, but then again most devices can be charged from a plug socket. This may seem inconsequential to plugging directly into the Mac and syncing as regular, but this will become more and more essential when iTunes learns to granulate the syncing process. Right now it's just way too bloated.
- CannonGod

Back when I had G1 Zune with Wi-Fi syncing, I never used it. I configured it just to say, hey it syncs wirelessly! Then never used it again.

Please. I love wireless. Come on Apple! What happened to innovation? But the i back in iPod and iPhone!
- Zachary TG
You can sync big fat media files over WiFi or have a battery that doesn't commit suicide. Pick one.
- David Chartier
from iPhone
David: True enough that when you want to replace large amounts of data on your iPhone/iPod it's better to directly sync connected to the Mac, but if iTunes granulates the syncing process I can easily add a single song/photo/app without hooking up. It just makes sense to me. I think it's sad I have to use apps like AirSharing to do this instead. I have whole albums wirelessly synced this...

Amazing level of transparency and detail about their custom storage servers. HN discussion at http://news.ycombinator.com/item... (discusses why this is appropriate for backup, but perhaps not generic storage needs)

45 drives per unit and many units means they must be constantly replacing failed hard drives - just due to the sheer quantity of them in use
- Jacob Old
It wasn't entirely clear to me from the blog post what you have to do to replace a drive. Looks like at minimum you have to remove the unit from the rack, and I don't see any drawer guides or similar to assist with that. And do they have to take the unit offline to replace a single drive?

Geez. Back in 1998, Microsoft was bragging about their 1 TB cloud... :-) Millions of $ then I think.

So, they store their data "securely" in Palo Alto? That makes me scared.
- Jonas S Karlsson
Quoted from blog- "Backblaze Storage Pods are building blocks upon which a larger system can be organized that doesn’t allow for a single point of failure." They have indicated an amazing amount of cost savings.
- Wins Fern
Mitchell: I don't think 1TB was "millions of dollars" in 1998.
- Steve de Mena
Nice idea. Pity that it only supports a HTTPS interface, not surprising at that cost though (the software that runs the filesystems on the NetApp and other devices isn't exactly cheap to write). Anyone see if they quoted transfer speeds? I'm wondering what impact the four SATA cards each with SATA multipliers on them has when it comes to access speeds.
- Russ
Steve: according to http://www.littletechshoppe.com/ns1625... disk cost ~$0.08 / mb in 1998, which comes out to >$800,000 for 1 TB or just over a million bucks in todays dollars. so maybe not millions, but a million!
- Karl Rosaen
Russ: It runs Debian. If you were rolling your own (and they don't sell these units), you could turn on NFS or some other protocol (CIFS, iSCSI). They only use HTTP because it's cloud storage. NFS license is a major expense on NetApp, but all the major Linux distributions can act as NFS servers, CIFS servers, and probably iSCSI targets.
- Andy Dustman
Andy: I know that you could do that on them but it leaves the problem of what to do with the storage. You could merge the 3 volumes into an LVM VG but the performance could become an issue with any load on it. It seems I wasn't the only one to question the performance, while the views of a Sun engineer aren't exactly unbiased it does highlight some of the downsides: http://www.c0t0d0s0.org/archive...
- Russ
Fascinating article; but more questions: "In rough terms, every time one of our customers buys a hard drive, Backblaze needs another hard drive." -- so what happens when a drive fails; how much redundancy is there? What happens when a meteorite destroys the whole building; is there off site backup too? (I know this *is* the off-site backup, but still...) I wonder how much data flows in and out over time. Maybe I should just read their website.
- Rob Fisher
Rob: they mention using 15 drive RAID6 volumes that can lose up to 2 drives before failure
- Mike Chelen
The worst part about this cluster design is the fact that I couldn’t shut up about it for the first couple days after finding out about it. It was the solution I proposed to every problem. There were complaints.

IMO RAID6 is not that great. Granted, it's highly unlikely to lose 3 drives at the same time, but there's still possibility. Besides, for write-intensive app, parity calculation is quite time-consuming. I personally prefer RAID 10 (striped array of RAID1 pairs). Yes the effective usable space is less than half total capacity, but for backups -- which will sooner or later be used to restore something -- I prefer data integrity over usage efficiency.

"AT&T has hinted a new version of the iPhone OS will ship later this month, iPhone Software 3.1. The new software is likely to deliver on some of the promises made to AT&T users when iPhone 3.0 shipped, specifically MMS messaging (at last) and the capacity to engage in Bluetooth file transfers."

My6Sense is another really interesting app, but remains iPhone only. I know we're seeing a variety of apps like that. The same holds in reverse for Blackberry only apps. I wish there was a better mix of cross platform tools so we could use the same ones on our Blackberries and iPods. Not likely any time soon.

Robert, I'm not sure I agree they will port it. I agree they've made those noises, but in reality, there are *very* few companies porting anything between iPhone and BB. And by the time they get too it, my take is that it will be to catch up to a competitor who's beat them to other platform (in the case of porting either direction). Competition is the driver really. Barak, even better. TBH the app store is so insanely competitive in terms of pricing I don't mind paying for the good stuff. I don't t begrudge RSSFLASHG people the €3.99 for the app (I actually consider it to be worth more). My issue with the appstore is all the useless stuff I've bought. The stuff I actually do use is, if anything, cheaper than it should be and at the same time I've...

Anymore news on this anyone? Scott did you overcome your concerns about feeding this app your Social Networking codes? It's a concern I didn't even have until you raised it so I've been checking back here to see how you got on?
