Javascript power to weight ratio. What's yours? Click here, wait for the result and divide it by your device weight in kilos. E.g the Aigo MID with ff3.0 scores 18 which, with 0.35kg gives a jp/w of 51.4 http://bit.ly/v8v3benchmark - http://code.google.com/apis...
I just tried a few times to run this on my iPhone 3G 16GB. First time, it hung Safari. Second time, fresh after a reboot, it never completed, even though I let it run for about 10 minutes. Both times, it. Got to 57% complete, and the scores were: Richards 2, DeltaBlue 2, Crypto 5. Hope that helps, let me know if you want me to run it again! :-)
- Josh Bancroft
first run on my iPaq 614c with PocketIE : same as Josh - got to 57%, then 71% then device hanged ... Second try with Netfront 3.5 : stopped at 43% .. Third shot with Opera 9.5beta: completed ! score: 8 / .145 = 55 :)))
- jean-paul
it hung on an S60 phone for me in the same place. Good to know that Opera completes the task although for some reason, their browsers always seem to be poor at Javascript.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
Still haven been able to test Skyfire to see how well ajax works and how the latency is. I guess I could RDP to my server at home and get a similar 1000+ result though ;-) I'll post why I dont like the proxy solutions soon.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
N800 for shits and giggles: 3/0,206 = 14,6. funny enough it wondered if i wanted to kill the javascript around step 3 or 4.
- turn.self.off
and now multiply the figure by the online battery life of your device and you have an index of internet mobility. Mmmm. Maybe im on to something here!
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
remind me, that archos is using cortex, yes? got to be somewhat bothersome that the older N800 scored as much as it did. or maybe that say something about the microb javascript, even before any kind of optimization...
- turn.self.off
The archos 605 is the old one. Not Cortex bassed but Opera, while accurate, isnt the best at javascript. I will contact Jenn to see if i can get a result from her.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
ah yes, i got my numbers crossed. that makes a bit more sense. and i recall having issues with javascript (to the point i left it off most of the time) back on my 770. but then that was also a weaker device then the N800, so...

Fujitsu Loox U/B50n 1.6ghz with chrome v1.0154 = 395 / 0.58 = 681 (looks like latest chrome is slower!)
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
tried tear just now, on the old N800, interestingly enough that got me, 18,8 / 0.206 = 87,38! what a difference that is compared to the microb test i did some time ago...
- turn.self.off
i dont believe it. I've just killed my second everun note by plugging the wrong adaptor in. 5v in with a standard plug was a stupid design choice. SO ANNOYED.
For starters, you could try using the others keys, though there can really be no replacement for J. Maybe his close friend K could offer some words of wisdom?
- Ben L.
Was on the phone with Apple support for the first time about buzzing iPhone 3G headphones. I've been on plenty of customer support lines before and I'm used to their canned responses. Apple support actually seemed human and was nice.
Oh and they had good hold music... lol. As in real music, not elevator background noise. I suppose being the #1 digital music distributor has its perks.
- Ben L.
And luckily they can replace my headphones for me, although they need to put a $30 hold on a credit card.
- Ben L.
I can't really comment on this since I've only just got any kind of console only last year, but Wii Tnnis has gotten my attention the most since then. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Oh, I just played the Lego Batman demo and want to buy that. I generally don't like the Lego games, but that was fun. I haven't played any new games. All the stuff I started playing recently is either just new to me since we just bought it or has been sitting around for the past year and I'm just now playing them.
- Admiral Anika
left4dead... it has seriously impressed me.
- alphaxion
Mirror's Edge. Innovative and graphically impressive. Available for 360/PS3/PC
- Ben L.
Can't believe no one's mentioned Fallout 3 yet. So let me right that wrong: Fallout 3 (PC).
- David Young
I've played Rock Band 2 the most, but I wouldn't give it GotY (not innovative enough over RB1). I suspect it will be Fallout3 once I get it, though - I was a huge fan of Oblivion.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
@Rodfather, oh, wow, I forgot GTA IV was this year! That's be a likely candidate, although even months later I still haven't finished it. Because I suck.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
@Jandy: I didn't get to finish it either. My Xbox broke at the time and every since I got it back, it's all Rock Band. There's too many games out. I still need to check out Gears of War 2, Farcry 2, Fable 2, and COD 5.
- Rodfather
I'd say it has to be Derrick. Oh wait, I thought you said 'computer Gay'. my bad....and Derrick, I tease with the utmost respect and love....
- Morgan Haley
Oh yes, Braid is up there as well. Though I liked GTAIV and it had a great story, it's pretty much the same game it's been for several iterations now. After the hype has died down, it's just not very memorable. I still think Vice City is much better.
- Rob Haas
Fallout 3 and GTA 4 arrived a few days ago, yet to play but looking forward to both.
- Kol Tregaskes
I've played the Bioshock demo, looks cool but yes think it's been out a while.
- Kol Tregaskes
COD 5 Online, not 1 player, but now I've reached Prestige I'm feeling a bit bored. GTA4 doesn't get near as the online aspect was awful, The Club was the most innovative FPS and fun game this year and FarCry 2 was very medicore.
- Toby Graham
I haven't played GoW2 yet. I still have the first one and never finished it. A buddy of mine and I was going to do it co-op but he flaked. :( Far Cry 1 had fun multiplayer, but I've never played Far Cry 2.
- Jason Shultz
from twhirl
You've gotta get Bioshock, Kol. At least rent it. One of the best stories (not to mention best art design) in a game ever.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Ah why can't they just release a full fledged task management web app?! It would integrate wonderfully with Google calendar and be available from any computer with an internet connection.
- Ben L.
I'm sure they are too. ;) It's killing them in the U.S. smartphone market.
- Kevin C. Tofel
Way too expensive. High end Nokia phones shine because they have so many features, but their ease of use is not going to convince anyone that doesn't already use smartphone to use one.
- Ben L.
actually started my ubuntu desktop this month. i TS to winbox now.
- MikeAmundsen
I am happy to say I have been mostly MS free for about 6 years now. Excusing the occasional word doc
- Bill Pennington
from twhirl
Supporting MS products pays my bills. It IS my job, whereas Google only helps me do my job.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
I've basically been MS free for 7 years now. Google not only provides my calendar, e-mail, search, and collaborative document editing, but my paycheck as well. Yeah, I'd say I am pretty dependent.
- Thomas Stromberg
the cloud let's me work regardless of the OS, though I'm most comfortable at home with Windows XP.
- Ben L.
Dependent? Very little. However, that doesn't mean I don't use MS products regularly.
- Kenton
Mostly MS-free. I did not set out to be that way, but I switched from Win to Mac last year, and I've never used Office much, so I don't have much dependence on MSFT. As for Google: I use them a lot, but don't feel dependent. Others provide services that are about as good, and the switching cost is trivial.
- Mitch Wagner
I rarely use MSFT products, most seem very dated these days.
- Rich
At work, very dependent (OS, Office, Outlook, corporate-approved browser). At home, less so, but still dependent.
- Ontario Emperor
Not very at all... I have moved away from M$ products almost completely.
- Clay Newton
Dependent on MS Exchange / Outlook, nothing else.
- Susan Beebe
I have strived to be MS-free for over two years. I operate OSX and the occasional Ubuntu. Google's services have suited me quite well, making my not so dependent upon any one platform.
- Trevor Carpenter
I've basically been Microsoft-Free in my personal life for about 6 years now, and for about 3 in my professional life.
- matthew john ernisse
I'll always try things once but this I don't think I'd like.
- ronin
It actually kind of reminds me of something we cook at our house called spaghetti pie. It's regular cooked spaghetti mixed with egg and parmesan then covered with mozzarella and baked. Cut out a slice and serve it with spaghetti sauce on top. It's great and I just realized we haven't had it in a long, long time. I know what I'll be cooking one day this week.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Sure, why not? I have had baked ziti pizza and taco pizza and all that crazy pizza stuff my husband used to bring home, so why not ramen too?
- April Russo (app103)
Hell nah. But I should admit to willingly putting cheese in my ramen soups (cheddar and mozzarella) so I may be a hypocrite here.
- Admiral Anika
Oh yeah, I would put some Sriracha on there and tear that up! mmmm
- Victor
*sigh* still no push notifications in iPhone/iPod Touch OS 2.2. It was supposed to be released month ago with the 2.0 update that brought the app store.
and someone please tell me what the point is of putting the google search bar next to the URL bar in Mobile Safari? It still takes the same number of button presses to initiate a Google search. It isn't like Apple to make such trivial changes.
- Ben L.
Yes, every iPhone (EDGE or 3G) and iPod Touch (1st gen or second gen) can run the same games. Some games might use GPS on the 3G, or only be useful if you have a microphone, but you can run any app from the app store on any device from the touch family regardless of the hardware that the specific hardware that the app might make use of
- Ben L.
Got it about 2 hours ago. I'm in Canada which apparently is a transatlantic flight from the U.S. according to the dude from "The Office". I'm looking forward to seeing you next week at the MeetUp in Toronto...along with 200 other people. =)
- B2B Specialist
I thought you had a MacBook Air? A netbook is much smaller but a lot less power. And a smaller screen is not that good for the eyes.
- Digerati Asia
@Hacker that's correct. It's a discretionary purchase to say the least! That's why it's just a thought right now.
- Steve Rubel
I've heard a lot of good things about the Dell Mini 9, esp. re: OSX. I'm thinking about getting one myself.
- Rubin Sfadj
I'm looking into a netbook too - what are the limitations to connecting to the enterprise? i.e., file xfer over VPN.
- Bill Sanders
i still love my lenovo ultra-portable...i've spilled coffee on it and it didn't break...thing is a champ -- get a 12", you'll be really happy with it, definitely the best size. 13.3 is too big, 10" is too small: http://tinyurl.com/3amkdy
- Adam Singer
Dave Winer: I love my white one too. :D It's absolutely "eye candy".
- Erhan Erdogan
Karoli: It's around 4 hours(at high performance, while full workin) 6-7 hours(power saving+in a slow day)
- Erhan Erdogan
Some people have big problems with MSI Wind and Apple routers. I was one of them. Still get comments on my blog post about it, got one today. If you use an Airport of some ilk, you may have to return the computer. Make sure you can. http://bit.ly/coxx
- Dave Winer
@Dave I read that in my research.
- Steve Rubel
from IM
Dave W., Steve R.: Oh! After Friendfeed, world of geeks get smaller. : )
- Erhan Erdogan
@Steve I do think that a netbook is not going to buy you much since you have an Air. They are mostly for those with heavier/ bigger notebooks who want small and light to carry around. Plus they are not Macs.
- James Kendrick
@James that's where I am netting out too. Still, I want to be part of the cool kids club!
- Steve Rubel
I must be the only geek in the world who sees no reason for wanting a netbook
- Deepak Singh
I got the MSI Wind and I really like it. Keyboard is a good size, but the one button for rt-clicking is kind of hard to get used to, but that's alright. $399 at Best Buy!
- Sarah Perez
What is the average resolution on netbooks like the Acer Aspire or ASUS Eee PC?
- Mitch
I found my answer: 1024x600. That's a bit of a turn-off for me.
- Mitch
love the Asus eee of 1000h. If you can wait I expect screen rez to go up in the near future. 1024 x 600 is a bit cramped.
- Omar Shahine
I just ordered an MSI Wind; intending to run OS X on it.
- Chuck Lawson
I have a UIMPC, an Ultra-Immoble-Personal-Computer. My Dell Latitude's battery so fried that I need to stay plugged in. Waiting for laptop to die so that I can get a new one, perhaps a real UMPC :)
- Mike Reynolds
Steve - no surprise here but I'd suggest getting a Dell Mini 12, though @gapingvoid really like the Mini 9. I'm waiting for the 12 given the thickness of my fingers :).
- Bruce Eric Anderson
Since 95% of the components are the same in netbooks, I'd look at the 5% differences. Some will meet your requirements, while some won't. Example: need a full-sized, correctly place Right-Shift key? Some have 'em and some don't. Do you have any special requirements for your computing needs?
- Kevin C. Tofel
The video, 3d and cpu performance on this Note is amazing whn plugged in. Still uber-umpc class when in power save. Downloading Half Life 2 demo for the little Everun Note.
looking forward to seeing this thing play HL2
- Ben L.
Well it loads and runs. Never played HL before so I actually got into it and found it interesting. Need to get some 3D action going before I comment on its performance.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
it's pretty obvious with HL2 if things are working - the action freezes and judders big-time. However, even if it does this it can be playable once cut scenes and a few seconds of game play have been gone through. Let us know, we wait with baited breath!
- Ian Smith
I just saw smooth action. Was playing on mains power though and the fan was rather noisy!
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
Cool! (or warm / hot / scorched fingers??) Let us know if it'll run at all on power saving if you have chance. Thanks!
- Ian Smith
The keyboard is well isolated from any heat. Under-right is the hotspot on this (where the fan exhaust is routed)
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
Having read the review at Lazon.com [?], this machine really does seem to be the machine for me. In their review, they got only about 1.5 hours of battery life in certain situations, but armed with my tekkeon/the everun extended battery, that wouldn't be a show stopper for me. Right now, I have to resista strong urge to hurl my Vye S18+ 500Mhz tortoise across the room every day, so PERFORMANCE/size is the key for me.
- Mark
Im with you on the frustrations from Kohji devices. This one is in a different class.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
Actually, if your review reads as I expect it to (I am guessing the verdict will be favourable!), then the only things that will give me (momentary) pause for thought will be colour (white only?), possible non-expandable RAM (I am praying that it is expandable), and possible issues with the mouse...
- Mark
These are questions that ive raised to RD. Hope to have answers tomorrow. Fast SSD would be nice in this although its probably destiny that my Q1 broke and has freed up my SSD and 3G module!
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
Wow it looks great... I want to see some benchmarks, this could be my next machine, and I'm in need of an upgrade (been rocking a UX180 for years now, 512MB of RAM and its still my primary machine!)
- Ben L.
Don't mean to offend anyone here, but it is sometimes annoying to be seeing blog posts posted to twitter through FriendFeed. It would be nice if people would just aggregate their blogs straight to FriendFeed, I'm already subscribed to you guys through my blog reader anyway! For the big guys who recently moved over, I'' sure you have lots of...
