"She looks sweet grooming her chick, but don't mess with mom's nest: Ural owls are aggressively territorial. "I've made an 'agreement' with the females that the price to band and measure one nestling is six hard punches on the head," says Finnish ornithologist Pertti Saurola."

An amazing shot. "The symmetry of the bird and its reflection are what first drew me to this image. I also love the energy captured in the forward movement of the bird as it races across the frame. —Alexa Keefe, Photo of the Day editor"

"This would be a man that loves going to work and does not dread it the night before. Upon entering the Magic Kingdom, one of the security guards said to the girl, 'Excuse me, Princess, can I have your autograph?" I could see that the book was filled with children's scribbles as the guard asked the same question of many little Princesses. The little girl could not get over the fact that the guard thought she was a real princess."

I would punch this man in the face. Not because he has a tattoo, but because I would go into instinctual mode and if I see Darth Vader sneaking around I'm taking him out before he can see me and use his hokey religious powers on me!

Pictures from The Color Run in SF this past weekend! It was awesome! Photo 1 is at the end of the race, 2 is us rolling in the orange powder, and 3 is my favorite.
Thank Stephen,.. learnt somethign new today :)-

Wow, doing Color Me Rad SJ is going to be fun. But do I bring a P&S or the weather-sealed 7D for pictures during the walk?
- Neal Krummell
This looks like a lot of fun. My daughter and her friends did the Twin Cities Color Run this past weekend. She sent me photos but I didn't know exactly how the colors were 'distributed' so thanks for the link. (The only thing that concerns me slightly are the massive clouds of color powder, and the volunteers wearing masks as they toss the powder. Meanwhile, the runners--who are breathing deeply and at nearly full lung capacity--are running through it 'mask free.')

Great photos - #3 also my favorite. Thanks for sharing Kel - well done!

"With a strong vision and sense of smell, and the ability to reach up to 40 miles per hour, coyotes are symbolic of adventure. I was fortunate enough to find this wild coyote while visiting Yellowstone National Park. It leaped and ran under tree branches and between boulders. I made sure not to disturb the coyote, and when it lay down on top of a hill I was able to include the coyote's environment in the background. This image displays the coyote's vast habitat, and a sense of mysteriousness and exploration, through its single eye staring back at the camera."

"On photo safari in the Serengeti in February 2012, we caught sight of this baby among a herd of grazing elephants. It was cute how the young elephant would walk in and out of its mother's legs as she was walking along."

I'm looking at studio and one bedroom apartments in Redwood City, Menlo Park, Palo Alto, and Mountain View. It's tough since I can only do viewings on weekends. If anyone has any advice, or info on available places in those areas, please let me know! Thaaaaaaaaaanks!
Ugh, I guess you can just live in the hospital since you can't afford rent and pay that
- SteVe C
Seriously. If I wasn't so shocked, I'd be crying, it's so ridiculous.

I'm trying to find a full time job, but I'm having a very difficult time. After years of applications, resumes, and cover letters, it's hard to work up the energy. I really, really need to move out of Napa. With everything else going on, I'm exhausted and discouraged. Any words of wisdom or even knowledge of open positions welcome/wanted. Thanks.
Where are you looking to move to? And what industries are you looking to work in? (Apologies if youve already posted these elsewhere!)
- ωαřмaiden ❤Marrit Woman❤
I'd move just about anywhere, but I'd prefer to stay in the bay area. Industry-wise, my experience is working with kids in education and after-school programs, and I have administrative experience as well. I don't even have to be working with kids, that's just where my experience is now.
- Kelly
Are you willing to consider other industries, even if it mean starting at the bottom?
- Soup in a TARDIS
Kelly, I'm on an informal job req list for the Bay Area. Most of what's been coming through so far has been social justice work, youth work... If you DM me your email, I can forward you stuff.

Any more wisdom or advice is more than welcome, so, *bump*

Have you ever read "What Color is My Parachute?" If not, get the latest version of it and read it. A lot of the stuff that gets people jobs is the groundwork they lay. I am really bad at that stuff because I was somehow raised to believe that we live in a meritocracy and that people would only look at your resume and how good you are at your job. I didn't want to use connections to get...

I can't tell how these things run in the US, but from all I know, very selective, targeted applications do way better than spreading a lot. In times where applcations are like floods, HR people love candidates who seem to appreciate THAT ONE job/company - for a reason. Makes search hard, but it pays out (and means less negative supplies) Anyway, best of luck!

Also, if you're a college graduate, join your alumni society or start being active in your membership if you've already got one. There's no guarantee, but I've heard of a number of folks who've gotten valuable contacts and informational interviews with successful people in their field who happen to be graduates of their alma mater.

Me, too. Sometimes "I'm exhausted and discouraged" even though I had just about 1.5 year working experience, however, it's not related with finance field or master's degree. I need re-start to take the exams for some certifications in Taiwan if I want to develop my career in the field. Is there any kinds of jobs which is needed some certification "first" for applying if you want to try? It there should be different from Taiwan. Don't be so exhausted and discouraged! You can make it!

Hey Kelly I'm afraid my work place isn't great at hiring in our area but you are always welcome to stay with us for a few weeks or months to try and see if there's anything in the Southland that is lucky enough to have you. Alternatively Grandma's in SF has lots of open rooms for staying in when job searching too. You are a wonderful person who happens to be intelligent on top of it, it'll all work out in the end.

My wife is from Napa and she occasionally heads back and gets depressed about her friends in dead-end jobs. Not sure if that says more about Napa or her friends. Anyway, have you read this article from last weekend's WSJ? Wonder what California people think about. http://online.wsj.com/article...

Hi Kelly, let me know if you're interested in a customer service position in Palo Alto. It doesn't seem that you're subscribed to me, so I can't DM you the info.
