We've never played an expansion either, this one is really interesting. It comes with 4 variants and 5 scenarios. The variants add things like the "Friendly robber" who won't harm anyone with fewer than 3 points or the Harbormaster, similar to the Largest Army, 2 victory points to the person with the most settlements on the water. And now you can play with 2 players :). Then it throws in all these other scenarios which completely change the game by adding fishing/caravans/barbarians/etc. - Benjamin Golub

What do you mean about the expansion for 2 players? Settlers is a 4 or 5 player game... at least the original I'm playing is. - Mitch

The original is 3 or 4. Traders & Barbarians adds the ability to play with only 2 players by introducing neutral players and forced trades using tokens.
