"From Egg in a hole, Toad in a Hole and Eggy in a Basket to Hobo Eggs, it seems that everyone calls this breakfast treat by a different name. But from now on I will call it Egg in a Nest thanks to a comment left on my Flickr photo! An egg tucked into a piece of bread and fried?" - Derrick from Bookmarklet
That looks _so_ good! - Jenny H
My husband called them Gas House Eggs. We never knew why. Maybe guys living on the work site made them? - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
I'd never heard of or seen such a thing until a few months ago on FF when someone posted about these. I tried to make it once since then but I think I did it wrong because the whites were still runny when the toast was dark. - Rochelle
We called the spit-in-the-eyes at camp. - laura x
I thank the film "V for Vendetta" for introducing me to this delicious item of food, although I curse them for calling it "Eggy in a Basket" and saying it's an English delicacy. This meal's excellence quotient can be increased with the addition of bacon. - Le Slip Anglais
Of course, you mean butter that has first fried bacon, don't you? :-) - Le Slip Anglais
My favorite name so far? One-eyed toast. - Derrick
Love this. - Bren from iPhone
Well, I was going to make this for breakfast but the only sliced bread we have is a sourdough loaf and it wasn't tall enough to cut a circle out of so I just cooked two eggs and set them on top of a slice of sourdough toast. With ketchup. Yep. - Rochelle
One-eyed toast... :-D - Lisa | #TeamMonique
I think I am having that today. Yum. - Melissa
Yes, my dad used to make this for us. Yummmmmmmm.... - amygeek
I'll have one after my run - Bren
I've seen this but I don't think I've ever made it. - Eric - seven eleven
Egg frames are what folks in my family always called them. - Katy S
Rochelle, keep practicing. Much like grilled cheese, you need a medium to medium-high heat to give the eggs time to cook but not burn the toast. Also, I cover the frying pan to help set the whites and, if necessary, flip it once at the end. - Laura Norvig
Laura, will do! When I cook eggs, I always flip once because I like the yolks to have a cooked layer on the top. - Rochelle
I'm going to try this - Rodfather
It's also fun to use small cookie cutters to get different shapes in the middle. We have used a star - it's not perfect but it's cute. - Laura Norvig
I still didn't get around to making this yet. Maybe for dinner. - Derrick
I seem to recall knowing it as Toad in a Hole from childhood and it's definitely tasty. However, my English grandmother rarely made it and almost always made us what she called Eggy which involved toast cut into strips which we then dipped into soft boiled eggs (held in egg cups) so similar effect in a very different form. - Maria Niles
I just made these for lunch! I was so worried about the whites being runny that I overcooked the yolk. I'm out of practice. They were still great though. Wade had a candy cane shape and I had a star. He said he wants to eat them every day. And he's asking for another one right now. - Laura Norvig
We call them one-eyed Egyptians since I can remember. - Josh Haley from iPhone
One-eyed Jacks over here - April Buchheit
Toad in a hole. Aka delicious :) - Benjamin Golub
I tried making that on a whim a couple months ago. YUM. - Lo
Bump. - Derrick
I bet the Dictionary of American Regional English has a lot to say about this... - RepoRat
my mom makes "egg in a nest" using a soft boiled egg "nested" in mashed potatoes. don't knock it 'til you try it. cures a hangover like nobody's biz - αnnα vαȵ scoyoç
Camel's eyes here. And yes, delicious. Also, anna, that sounds delicious and sort of like what I do with poached (or fried) egg on savory oats. - ellbeecee
Toad in the hole is sausages cooked in Yorkshire puddings, preferably with lashings of onion gravy. - Heleninstitches
I saw an old movie once where they called them Gas House eggs, we call 'em Hole in Ones. - LibrarianOnTheLoose
I just had this for breakfast today. :3 - Colette
We called them 'One Eyed Egyptians' when growing up. Now I call them One Eyed EggJipShans - Morgan
I might have made a mistake by telling my family that I had made these for myself recently. My wife is asking for this now. :) - Ha3rvey #teamMonique

First Impressions: Canon S100 - http://piaw.blogspot.com/2011...
First Impressions: Canon S100
I did not know the S100 went to 24mm. That is an excellent upgrade from the already impressive S90. - Benjamin Golub
Yes. That's actually a huge feature. One reason why SLR pictures look more impressive is because 24mm focal lengths are more readily available. - Piaw Na
I've been considering what I want to use when I don't have the 5d2 with me and the S100 looks like a good bet. (BTW -- I bought the previous S100 ~12 years ago for our honeymoon road trip -- http://www.dpreview.com/news...). However, I've been finding that I just use the camera on my phone more and more. It isn't bad (I have an iPhone 4) but the 'upload now'... more... - Joe Beda
I usually travel in places outside of 3G/Wifi coverage anyway, plus, the phone cameras suck. They really do. People ooo and ahh over my S90 pictures because they've been conditioned to poor shots from camera phones. Of course, back in the film days, they ooo and ah'd over my tripod mounted shots as well. Going the extra step always always helps your results. - Piaw Na
The download/cull/upload loop for my 5D2 is just too much work most of the time and so pictures sit on the card. Sharing pictures with the grandparents suffer. I'd love to improve that without sacrificing the quality of a better camera. The phone cameras are poor but getting a lot better. The iPhone 4 is loads better than the 3GS (which I didn't use as it was so bad). I wonder what kind of conversations Canon/Nikon have had internally about how to handle phone cameras. - Joe Beda
The compact cameras work very well and are loads better than the best phone cameras. The 5D2's a little more work, but not a lot more if you have a fast PC (quad-core + SSD is best). I don't have any issues with photos staying on my card and not being shared. - Piaw Na
Two kids + work = no time for dealing with pictures :) - Joe Beda
Yeah well, that's going to have an impact. Though with photos, I'd rather have a few good pictures than a lot of crap. There's evidence that your perception of the past is determined largely by your photos, so if you have a lot of crappy photos you'll make your self less happy in the long run. - Piaw Na

I miss the little real-time window that you could have open while you worked on other things. I never understood why they didn't implement that. - Shevonne
I forgot all about that little window. - Akiva
Wait. It's still there. Click on the timestamp in the main feed and then click on the timestamp again in the individual post. - Akiva
Ha, I remember this! I almost thought this was an old post that got bumped! - Zulema ❧ spicy cocoa tart

I still didn't get the window. :( I'm sick so that's my excuse. Haha - Shevonne
Pop-ups blocked? I clicked the time-stamp in the Main feed, which brought up a window with just the post in it. Clicked on that time-stamp and a wee window popped up. EDIT: I responded from said wee window. - c.a.j.

Ross: do you have the FriendFeed music video? I think it was to a Coldplay song? - Benjamin Golub
Shevonne, I think you and Akiva are talking about two different things. You can still have a little window to watch activity on an individual post, but I don't think there's a window for your whole feed. But I could be wrong. - Laura Norvig
There is a link to the sidebar feed, I can't remember what it is, but I opened it a month or two ago. I think LogEx posted a link. *scours* I'll be back. - Jimminy IS Everybody
Thanks! Using it now - Shevonne
Ben, I should have it on a backup drive somewhere. I'll see if I can dig it up for ya :) - Ross Miller
Jimminey oh my god I forgot that even existed. Very cool. - Kevin Fox

Do you have any suggestions for CFLs that don't suck?
Feit Electric are consistently bad -- they take up to 1 minute to achieve full brightness. Greenlite have been consistently good -- instantly bright, and also their 23W version is shorter than Feit's which makes it look less ugly in certain fixtures. - Tudor Bosman
I'm specifically looking for the R30 / BR30 / PAR30 floodlight form factor, but other suggestions are good too. - Tudor Bosman
LED bulbs are way too expensive at $40+ a pop. - Tudor Bosman
Switch to incandescents in the winter, and wait until summer before switching to CFLs ;) - Amit Patel
That's a decent suggestion Amit. I still use a mix of incandescent, fluorescent, halogen, and LED, depending on the application. I have a ton of dimmers, and that's still a challenge. LEDs are expensive, but they should last a long time and you have to balance the energy savings. In some rooms, I'll put an incandescent in critical spots where I want light right away, then fluorescents... more... - Tinfoil 2.0
The mercury issue is annoying. I still use a mix of incandescent, fluorescent, halogen, and LED, but I tend to use incandescent more in the winter, because I don't mind the extra heat. For CFLs I bought lots of different brands, tried them all out, and used the highest light quality for important rooms and lowest light quality for garage, closet, and outdoor areas. - Amit Patel
I got $20 LED lights (60W equivalents, though they seem brighter to me) at Home Depot. National Grid was subsidizing them somehow. - Bruce Lewis
<-- also looking for a decent CFL in floodlight form factor. Needs to be dimmable too. - Benjamin Golub
My “solution” for dimmable CFLs was to get several smaller lamps and just turn on 1, 2, or 3 of them. :( - Amit Patel
Dunno if they make floodlight versions, but Home Depot's house brand (EcoLite?) was rated highly by CR, and in my experience has been great: Instantly bright, almost startlingly so, and they're supposed to last through a lot of on/off cycles (biggest issue with many CFLs). - Walt Crawford
As for dimmables (the only places we still have incandescents, I think)...sigh. The CFLs we tried both sang and flickered like crazy when dimmed. If/when LED's get real-world pricing... - Walt Crawford
Canadian Football League Gray Cup game usually doesn't suck. - SteVe C
How bad would this look in a floodlight receptacle? http://www.google.com/product... - Bruce Lewis
A little wonky due to being yellow when turned off, but it's promising. I think I'll buy one or two for beta testing :) - Tudor Bosman

Bank of America took over my Schwab credit card. They shut down access to the Schwab card from the old website and won't give us access to the card on the BoA website until "sometime in December". Meanwhile my account is paperless so it's going to be a pain in the ass to make sure I don't miss a bill payment.
ugh. - Kevin Johnson
That sucks. :( - Derrick
When they do things like this, it makes me wonder if they're counting on you missing a payment. - Ha3rvey #teamMonique
There is no wonder. - Josh Haley
Ha3rvey: that's what I told the customer service guy before hanging up on him. I'm pretty sure they are just dragging their feet to collect fees. How hard would it have been to leave the old Schwab website up while they waited on our new cards to be delivered? The old cards still work, just the website doesn't. - Benjamin Golub
Wells Fargo has certainly been known to stack the deck in order to ensure more fees. - Spidra Webster
Refuse to pay any fees for nonpayment of bills they don't send you or give you access to. - Bruce Lewis

Pet peeve about the Gmail new look: extra vertical space above and below the ad bar, which means the ad is more prominent, but fewer conversations fit in the window without scrolling.
What ad? :p - Tinfoil 2.0
actual da ad space is the same pix strength as normal line.. only problem is that it scrolls and we -1 on the list :)- - Peter Dawson
Actually, there's a "display density" option in the settings menu (the gear above your thread list, next to the prev page / next page buttons) which makes this better. - Tudor Bosman

FYI - for those of you still using FriendFeed to catch up on shared items from Google Reader, you can expect that those shared items will soon stop flowing as a result of upcoming changes to the product. I know the network here has changed a great deal in the last few years, but I figured it made sense to mention it as a public service.

I knew it would happen GP, integrating reader into the stream, and yeah >.> stank eye - sofarsoShawn
I knew this was coming, but to see it so baldly laid out here? Well. It smarts somewhat. Good job I can still #lazyweb the news by checking out google+ - WoH: Professor MOTHRA
And everybody in the world knows my position on Google Reader and FriendFeed and Google Reader shared items ... but all will be well. The Twitter account @lgstream will go away too. - Louis Gray
Most of the non-human feeds I pay attention to are direct RSS feeds coming in here. It'll suck not noticing GReader shares from LG. I still use GReader and sharing is convenient. I guess I'll have to use the bookmarklet more. - Rodfather
Google Reader will no longer produce RSS feeds for shared items? Why? - Benjamin Golub
Also what about PubSubHubbub? - Benjamin Golub
Ben, the upcoming changes to Reader remove social friending/following and shared links. More soon. And I don't see any reason PSHB would affected. - Louis Gray
Well PSHB is the vehicle on which we consume Google Reader shares. All the comments only mention the RSS feeds going away so I thought I'd check. - Benjamin Golub
+1 will replace the share/share w/note function, Ben. So PSHB wouldn't find anything. - Louis Gray
It could be a fiery week for you guys when these changes roll out...;)...as you are well aware the GReader community is a small but very passionate one. All the GR old timers are very wary. Either way it's kind of exciting for me that GReader isn't being forgotten, which is a good sign in itself. - Phil Ashman
Phil, I am the community and an old timer. It's my grenade to jump on, for better or for worse. - Louis Gray
Noted. - Micah from FFHound(roid)!
Phil, I'm a GReadr fanboy, so I'll be missing these share features. I can see the reason behind them too. Everything will be Google+ soon. We (us FriendFeeders) just need groups on G+ and better search features then it's got most of what FriendFeed has. I can't see G+ being an aggregator though. So if that's important then stick with FF. Personally I'm quite happy with my imports on G+.... more... - Kol Tregaskes

Does the new Messages app just know if a contact is running iOS 5 so it doesn't have to send a costly text message or do I have to somehow trigger it?
From what I have been reading, iM is the first option. Although if it cannot figure out, SMS will be sent the costly route automatically. No option to stop the message from going out... - kartik vaithyanathan from iPhone
I dare say it would work off the same set of pipes as FaceTime... since iOS5 works for iPods (without SMS feature) - Johnny from iPhone
Oh I figured it out. When you can send an iMessage the text input field changes from "Text message" to "iMessage". Neat! - Benjamin Golub
Yeah, it goes by AppleID, and I think it matches phone numbers to Apple IDs in its database to faciliate autodetection. - Kevin Fox

The new cheap ($79) Kindle is tempting, mainly because it weighs less than 6 ounces.

Has anyone used a Kindle with special offers before? Curious how intrusive it is and whether it's really worth the $30 savings. @Ben, do you already have a Kindle now? - Dan Hsiao
I haven't used one but I ordered the new $79 Kindle and should have it tomorrow or Friday. No ads display when you are actually reading a book so it doesn't seem like a big deal to me. - Benjamin Golub

1" sensor. I can't wait to see a pic of that adapted to a SLR telephoto lens. - Rodfather from iPhone
Considering that Sony's NEX is APS-C sized... I still don't get the logic. Unless they're assuming that p&s users moving up to an interchangeable lens system won't know or care that the larger the sensor size the better. Or they're counting on their brand driving sales. - ronin
The lenses will surely be cheaper than ones for large sensor mirrorless cameras... right? - Andrew C (✓)
Yeah. It bleeds close with cameras like the Canon S100. - Rodfather from iPhone
It'd be a trip if it had a crap load of connections to lenses and had adapters to support autofocus on micro 4/3, NEX, Canon EOS, and Nikon DX lens - Rodfather from iPhone
@Andrew I don't think so. It will most likely be on par. - ronin
Completely underwhelmed. - Piaw Na
I wonder if the bulk of customers will be Nikon fans. I'll assume it won't nearly be as popular in the US than in Asian markets. - Rodfather
The thing is, the lenses are still relatively bulky compared to the body. Even with the 10mm lens, it doesn't look like you'll be able to fit that in a jeans pocket. Most of the complaints are with the sensor size. Somewhere between a P&S and micro 4/3's. It's an odd spot they chose. - Rodfather
It also appears they are trying to tap into video more with that powerzoom lens. Hopefully, it'll act just like a consumer camcorder. But then, might as well go for a Sony NEX or a Panny GH2 if your focus is on video. - Rodfather
I wonder what Canon is going to do. I think they should embrace mirror-less but disregard the shrinkage of the body. Make a full-frame mirror-less system and have a strong focus on video. - Rodfather
I think the size is fine. The price is the part that is keeping me from jumping on the bandwagon. There are m4/3 systems that are cheaper with a *potentially* better sensor - Benjamin Golub
Yeah. $650 and $900 with a kit lens is hard to swallow. I imagine for those wanting to upgrade from a P&S and are looking at price & specs, a Sony NEX is attractive with the APS-C size sensor. Years old micro 4/3's cameras are relatively inexpensive and have some nice primes now. - Rodfather

Batuhan, I have a hard time imagining not using FriendFeed? But you've already seen me using it less, in favor of Google+. I think the best solution is for those of us interested in making the move to do so, and/or Google+ learning from the best FriendFeed has to offer. - Louis Gray
Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Congrats, Louis. Of course, this means even less sleep, right? - Friar Ticket to Ride

I was asked to come in to my local Chase bank to speak with a customer rep about my account, making sure I was getting the full benefits, and not having any unexpected fees. He really emphasized how important is it to Chase that their customers are satisfied and have their concerns attended to. He left our meeting twice to...
chase-logo.jpg
help at the front desk with transactions and withdrawals. The meeting would have been a maximum of 15 minutes, but was twice as long because he kept stepping out. - Kelly
The second time he came back I asked, "Is it really busy out there?" "No, not really, I'm just helping up front." - Kelly
This is a very small complaint, I realize, but this doesn't really help my idea of them. I'm been thinking about transferring my money lately, this was kind of the last straw. - Kelly
It doesn't sound like he was living up to *your* concerns at all. - Anika
Not at all. I'm going to do some research and see if I can find a better bank/credit union. - Kelly
Wow that's awful i'd change. - SteVe C
Kelly, if you have any immediate family who are or were in the military, you should check out USAA. - Kevin (aka ThreadKilla)
Kevin, I don't, but thanks for the suggestion! - Kelly
If you have DCU in your area they're great. I don't use all their services but my parents love DCU too. - Heather
DCU? - Kelly
Digital Credit Union. https://www.dcu.org/index.html - Heather
Sweet, it looks like there are several atms and a customer service center in town. I'll check those out this week, thank you! - Kelly
They're all the same. Unless you have a need for depositing cash, consider an online bank (I use ETrade Bank) that refunds ATM fees -- you can use any ATM and agree to the $3 withdrawal fee or whatever, and the fee is refunded to your account. - Tudor Bosman
Kevin/Kelly: USAA banking is open to everyone now. The customer service is excellent and the website is the best banking site I've ever seen. Some features are only available to USAA members (insurance and I believe credit cards) but most of the banking product is available to everyone. Highly recommended. - Benjamin Golub
If that's the case, then really, you should check them out. As Ben said, their customer service is seriously awesome. And they offer great things like the ability to use any ATM (they refund up to 10 service charges), deposit checks by smart phone, etc. - Kevin (aka ThreadKilla)
Awesome, I definitely will - Kelly

Anyone out there have good advice on getting a cocktail arcade table? (MAME, probably)
Check to see if there are any pinball suppliers in your area? They may have original cocktail table machines (or can tell you where to find them). I don't remember where you are, but I could probably get contact info for a few suppliers around the DC area. - DAMMIT, MR. NOODLE
We are in the San Jose, CA area. However we are hoping for one that is more PC run so that we can have more than just MAME games. Would like to have some Nintendo and Atari on there too. We have found a few good options, just trying to figure out if there are more we are missing or something better and such. - Rachel Lea Fox
Getting? Are there companies that make such things commercially yet? If so, they're your best bet. Otherwise, you have three ways to go: 1) Pay someone from the hardware hacking community to build you one 2) Use ebay or delve in forums and whatnot to buy a cabinet that someone has already built or 3) Research what other guys in the hardware hacking community have done and, well, build one. :-) - Le Slip Anglais
Note: If you decide to build one (which is what I would do if I weren't the lazy-assed lazy ass that I am), the easiest way is to hack the guts out of a "classic" arcade table and build around that. - Le Slip Anglais
Depending on the age of the arcade games you want to run, you could always put a Dreamcast inside of a tabletop machine and run a few emulators on a single disc (I can help you with that if you need to know how to put the disc together). If you're trying to run newer arcade games, that won't work, though. - DAMMIT, MR. NOODLE
Build one! - Benjamin Golub
Kevin, maybe the folks associated with this event can point you in the right direction? http://www.wired.com/gamelif... - Ryan Kaisoglus
I just found a place in La Habra CA with a bunch of them, just stopped in as i was visiting a neighboring store. Guessing you're not So Cal though. - SteVe C
We built both of our arcade cabinets (one cocktail table, one upright cabinet) back in 2002 and while it was a little more time consuming, we were able to get exactly what we wanted. There are quite a few sites online that sell parts, and even more sites that have PDF building plans and downloadable graphics packages for creating your signs and labels. Both are PC-based so we play both MAME roms as well as console roms. Probably one of the most fun projects we've ever done. - Hookuh Tinypants
I think this almost certainly has to be a DIY adventure. Even if you had a working, say Pacman cabinet, then what? You still need to install all the components, or buy a totally built one from somewhere (ebay?) Start here: http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki... - Steve and 4 other people
Also, looks like you can buy some pretty nice kits from different places. For example: http://www.dreamarcades.com/h2h... - Steve and 4 other people
Wait, Steve, you can buy kids?!?!?!?! :) - Georgia
LOL! I think he meant kits! So I've done a bunch of research and we have talked about what we want out of the machine and so we have decided against vintage as we want lots of our old favorite games from several different platforms and time frames. So we need the PC version. We also decided that we don't want to build it ourselves. As much as we are good at building things for... more... - Rachel Lea Fox
Yeah, you can buy kids, they totally sell them at the hospital. We reserved ours via the in-home ordering system, and it took *38 weeks* before it was delivered. And, get this, when we got to the hospital, it wasn't even ready yet. We had to wait like 3 days before we could take it home. They sent us a bill for something like $40,000, but then some other guys footed the bill for us, thankfully. - Steve and 4 other people

PhoenixFeather Photo Stories - Rachel Lea Fox - Lightning Lake - After Ben & Megan's beautiful wedding Kevin and I returned to our B&B (the E.B. Morgan House) to relax. We sat out on the back porch and watched the lightning storm come across Cayuga lake towards us. This was a special treat for me as I have missed lightning storms like crazy since I moved to California. It was beautiful and awesome and just so so amazing to watch and feel the energy in the air. I loved every minute of it! It took us a while to figure out the right settings on the camera to really get the lightning photos right, but i think we finally got a few. I wish we had figured it all out sooner so I could have gotten more, but I love the ones I got.

agreed. The hard drive is just about all that can go screwy. - Gunnyman™
Benjamin: No, out-of-warranty repairs / replacements done through TiVo keep lifetime plan continuity. - Tudor Bosman
Cristo, Ben: That's exactly what happened. TiVo will replace my Premiere XL with another one for $149, and the lifetime subscription will transfer over. - Tudor Bosman
