Abby - most of the privates require an essay or two. Plus a visit to see how your child interacts with others. It's really not all that bad. You get to write about your kid, which is fun.

They have to make it seem competitive to justify the value. I'm putting three kids thru private school in SF. The process is goofy. But everybody goes somewhere. The good news is college is easier, thousands of schools vs a handful.

Sounds strange to me - if the parents' writing isnt to the satisfaction of the school, either in content or style, that's it, your kid cant get into kindergarten??? I would have thought it would be the other way around, the parent getting essays from the teachers in the place on why we should entrust our kids to them, what they can contribute!

Jay - didn't realize you're a veteran of the process. Any tips?
- Hutch Carpenter
Joelle - that's an interesting point. One dynamic that affects that thought. Oversupply or overdemand of good schools? That situation changes the roles a bit.

Hutch: For tips we can move to DM twitter if you like. I am @oldengrey.

Thx Jay - will follow-up. We're heading out to get the Christmas tree right now.

I remember having to do the pre-kindergarten interviews. It was weird.
