Jamaican sprint star Usain Bolt says he wants to try a new event— the long jump. The world-record holder in the 100 and 200 meters says he thinks he could be a good long jumper some day. Bolt says he has been “messing around” with the long jump since high school and would like to compete in the event before he retires. While he’s willing to try a new event, he says he has no plans to run the 400.

Shey, that would explain a lot. I love watching him run, though. He looks like he's enjoying himself.
- ha3rvey (just a friend)
Very cool. I want to see what he can do. 32 feet?
- Hutch Carpenter
Carl Lewis was a great long jumper and doubled up in the 100 and 200 - so there's some precedent and some good footsteps to follow in. I'd love to see him try the 400 though.
- Patrick Jordan
from BuddyFeed
Me too Patrick, it's amazing that he keeps his 100m speed all the way through the 200m. Should be really cool if he tried the 400m
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
Hmmmm at this rate he'll be the next Carl Lewis
- LANjackal
Hey Shey - you know what I'd really love to see? Bolt vs. Michael Johnson, in some fanstasy world where they're both in their prime. At 200 and 400 - wow would that be something to see :)
- Patrick Jordan
sure amani, if you were on a motorcycle...maybe
- Richard Lawler
^^ :)) so true @Richard. The speed of Bolt is truly 'insane' - hell i watched replay over and over of his newest records and he did it in a way of 'relaxed high speed' - i am still perplex and speechless...
- Ronald
He's already a good long jumper :) He's not running, he's jumping :)
- Serkan Unsal
There is a huge difference between the 200 and the 400. Having said that, Bolt doesn't even seem winded doing the 200 but I get a sense that he wouldn't reserve any energy for the last straightaway in the 400.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
You'd think so, but look at michael johnson. I think your observation is on point, but Bolt's talent just makes you reconsider what is or isn't possible.
- Richard Lawler
The price of "Jamaican Yellow Yams" will definitely increase!!! :-) Love the way he is handling his new fame.

Well, I'm in the middle of making a form and it kind of sucks. I could create a form in Excel faster than this. I supposed I could have RTFM, but I wanted to see how intuitive it is. The thing is, it isn't. Oh and there doesn't seem to be any way to have an auto-complete field, unless you know how to code, which I don't. I would love to be able to plop in a box that automatically inserts today's date, but so far, can't see how to do that.
- Admiral Anika
Here's why I think the FriendFeed Feedburner integration is not beneficial (or entirely accurate). I include my "fun" schwag blog, schwagaddict.com, in my FriendFeed stream. EVER since the launch of the site, I have received only 30 (yes, thirty) referrals to my blog from FF. All of the sudden, my 74 subscribers have jumped up to 2686.
When you talk about blog subscribers, it should be people who are subscribing to your *blog* and have an interest in THAT content, not the PERSON. I have friends who maintain 284824348 blogs and I only am interested in one of them. Why should their ego be inflated (and their subscriber #s inaccurate) when people are really not interfacing with the blog despite the high subscriber count?
- Tamar Weinberg
Thank you!!! That happened to me today too and I don't like it. I went from 35 subscribers who are honest to goodness blog readers only to almost 500. It feels like cheating.
- Nurse Katie
"All of *the* sudden..." -- The definite article "the" is making its way into that idiom at what seems an accelerating rate. If you don't mind, I would be curious to know what part of the country you live in...
- Christopher A Carr
I'm in the northeast, but I was raised in the southeast... maybe it's an eastern thing.
- Tamar Weinberg
Thanks, Tamar. Another question if you don't mind: as far as you can tell, do you ever use "All of *a* sudden..." ? And are you aware of the fact that that is the more common form of that idiom?
- Christopher A Carr
fair points, especially on the itchy jumpsuit. Could you say that RSS in general is so accurate anymore tho?
- Brian Wallace
I was going to say, Christopher, that I have no idea if it's the fact that I haven't slept for weeks since I have a newborn or if it's something I subconsciously say without realizing it. I'll try to pay more attention to it next time.
- Tamar Weinberg
Interesting. Thanks for suffering my linguistics nerdiness.
- Christopher A Carr
When you write in second comment "When you talk about blog subscribers" - are you talking about yourself writing in second person? [I don't see anybody else talking then.] And, continuing, "it should people who are subscribing to your *blog*…" - should it have been "BE," or something else?
- ianf ⌘
Ianf, are you also nitpicking my grammar or is this a serious question?! (and I fixed the "be" part, thanks... I edited that one too many times to try to make it make sense..)
- Tamar Weinberg
Define:serious. Besides, answering a question with a question that questions the validity of questioning in the first place is so... hermeneutically Talmudical? ;-))
- ianf ⌘
You're killing me. In any event, the "when you talk about blog subscribers," it was more of a logical assumption type of statement... so yes, I am talking for myself and most other people who think about blog subscribers by assuming they're actually interested in subscribing to a particular blog and not a username who may be involved in several other blogs/entities/endeavors/whatever. I hope that made some sense.
- Tamar Weinberg
I think of the number more as "reach". For example, if I start a new blog and add it to my FriendFeed account, it will immediately reach a large number of people because future posts will automatically appear in my feed (even if not all of those people read the posts). If I didn't add it to FriendFeed, the initial reach of my new blog would be much closer to zero. Tracking the number of...

- Paul Buchheit
@Tamar, your hope is my command but, as I can not think of a single person who'd stoop down to thinking about blog subscribers in the way you describe[*], it only succeeded in making a lot of nonsense. [^*] analogous to the famous quote <http://thinkexist.com/quotati...> which I believe was first uttered by Hunter S. Thompson, though it is unattributed there.
- ianf ⌘
erm, it doesn't feel right, Charlie. :D And Paul, good explanation, but then it may be a good idea to really consider it to be another metric on Feedburner's end -- these aren't RSS subscribers anymore to your blog but it's the reach, just like you said. It's time to have separate counters for both.
- Tamar Weinberg
And ianf, let me ask you something quite honestly: for the FF users you subscribe to, do you read *all* their blogs? I'm going to guess that you don't. I have about 10 blogs to my name and I know that there is not a single person who reads all of them. That goes to say that my schwagaddict.com blog which now has nearly 3k subscribers is not being read by probably more than 80 people --...

- Tamar Weinberg
Subscriber count is completely inaccurate with feedburner including friendfeed, it is like saying your twitter followers are RSS subscribers to your blog.
- Justin Germino
A substantial portion of those 30 referrals from friendfeed to schwagaddict were me, sometime over a month ago. I'm a sucker for tchotskies. ... I really dislike that friendfeed inflated my RSS subscriber numbers. Before, 30-40% of the RSS subscribers would fetch the complete article. I don't know if they actually read it or if their software just fetched it, but at least it was an indication of intent. Essentially nobody on friendfeed actually reads my blog, yet it doubled my RSS subscribers.
- DGentry
Yes, it feels totally wrong to me too. Like padding or fluff that distort what was previously decent analytics. I know a guy who is a FF hustler and has lots of subscribers, and now it says his blog has "2123 subscribers" and he doesn't even get a single comment - so it's not accurate. No one seems to read or interact with it. Clean up Feedburner analytics, Google!

Stuart - here's the quick deal. 1) An RSS reader follows feeds you have selected. 2) Twitter and FriendFeed follow people you have selected. 3) Lazyfeed follows topics you have selected. Lazyfeed beats an RSS feed reader for finding new blog sources. Lazyfeed beats Twitter and FriendFeed on finding topical information. It's a great discovery engine.

how can i get anything (anything at all!) in the long, column shaped box on the left hand side of the screen? there is a wee box that says "paused", but i can't get anything else to happen there. can the boxes be moved? i don't like the "hot topics" at the top.
- kelly
Kelly, above that is a home navigation bar that says "Enter a word of your interest". Put something in there and click go. Then you can see related items and it should grow from there. Click the Add button to put one in the left bar.
- Louis Gray
kelly - there's an "add" button at the top of each topic's page. Click on it and it will move the topic into the left column. Also, the update "pauses" whenever you hover your mouse over that area. You can also hide "hot topics" by clicking on a gray tab attached just below the hot topics box.

Vinko - it should work. please go to www.lazyfeed.com and retry.

Ethan, yes some others are also able to sign up with #meganfox but for some reason I keep receiving "Invitation code is invalid.(1)"

Vinko - it seems that you are entering #meganfox from www.lazyfeed.com/signup. This is not the page. Please go to www.lazyfeed.com
- Ethan Gahng
Ethan and Niels, thanks. I'm not sure why I went to Sign Up right away and not see the Home page as the place to enter #meganfox. Is this a UX problem? Or just me?

Thanks Louis! I've added a bunch of topics and I'm getting interesting results so far. The only services I've added are twitter and del.icio.us. So, where are all the related stories coming from? I'm not complaining; just curious.

"Cryotherapy ("cold therapy") constricts blood vessels and decreases metabolic activity, which reduces swelling and tissue breakdown. Once the skin is no longer in contact with the cold source, the underlying tissues warm up, causing a return of faster blood flow, which helps return the byproducts of cellular breakdown to the lymph system for efficient recycling by the body. "Ice baths don't only suppress inflammation, but help to flush harmful metabolic debris out of your muscles," says David Terry, M.D., an ultrarunner who has finished both the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run and the Wasatch Front 100-Mile Endurance Run 10 consecutive times. Though you could use individual ice packs, cold-water immersion generally produces a greater and longer lasting change in deep tissues and is more a more efficient means of cooling large groups of muscles simultaneously. The discomfort associated with sitting in a tub full of ice water scares off some athletes. I admit that after my long...

E.g. social media could imply a bloggier/journalist/advertiser/pr ecosytem, while social networking could just be the technology or platform for connecting people online.
- Cristo
I don't hear the term "social networking" often anymore. Only in the context of "a social networking site", or as "a social network". I think some people like to call specific sites social networks, as if the "networking", the relationships between users are most important (Facebook started off as a kind of online college year book), while people who talk about social media mostly lay the emphasis on people being able to *communicate with* their network.
- Meryn Stol
I think that Facebook went into the social media direction with their introduction of the news feed.
- Meryn Stol
I interpret the social media term to be about people other than me. It's for professional bloggers and PR people, kind of like the online version of mainstream media. Social networking has been around since Friendster. Not sure when the social media term started being used.
- Cristo
Social media is about many to many communication.
- Meryn Stol
Meryn, what's the purpose of a social media expert? Do I need one as I use FriendFeed from day to day? Perhaps I should hire one to keep me from posting things that hurt my personal brand.
- Cristo
Social media experts are hopefully people who know how to use the tools. It's like knowing how to talk, but in a new way, because it's all many-to-many, and lots of time and space constraints are removed. And because of much of your interaction is in public, your day-to-day outings will matter more than when they would be only heard by one or a few people around you. I can't tell how many times this specific comment is gonna be read.
- Meryn Stol
The "personal branding" thing might be a little over the top. I see it differently: What you say and do will brand you. This has always been the case.
- Meryn Stol
These terms used to make sense but are drifting into ubiquity.
- Mike Reynolds
Not being explicit when you make jokes can make you misunderstood. You must consider many different frames of reference. Anyone can read your comments.
- Meryn Stol
I think the difference between Ashton Kutcher and Brad Pitt on Twitter shows that Social Media Experts, as Meryn described, are needed. Brad Pitt is a much bigger star than Ashton. But Ashton kicks butt on Twitter interacting with his fans and having fun. Brad Pitt just talks about charities and how hard he works and has almost no followers. So clearly Brad, a much bigger star than Ashton, needs a social media expert so he can learn how not to suck. And thus a career is born.
- Andrew
Recently, I read a report saying that republicans were more likely to think that Stephen Colbert from the Colbert Report was being earnest in some of his remarks during interviews. In effect, it means that he's developing a different brand among people who think he's earnest and among the ones who think he's joking. Sarcasm can have weird effects when seen through the eyes of people with different backgrounds.
- Meryn Stol
I forgot the "disintermediation" part of social media. That's very important too. Andrew highlighted that well re celebrities. Unfamous people simply had NO voice, politicians and celebrities now can have an "unfiltered" voice.
- Meryn Stol
Ok disintermediation isn't a word. You made that one up.
- Andrew
Meryn, I should hire you as a social media expert. I'm way too sarcastic for this medium. One of my goals is to hang out with Ashton Kutcher, so maybe you can help me achieve that goal. Also, I would like to visit. Maybe we can discuss our media relationship at one of your fine coffee shops.

Couple of reasons, main of which is the ability to have a stupid number of tabs open between multiple browsers without seeing a severe degradation of memory.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
On my work laptop, we are forced to use IE6 and I use either Firefox or more recently Chrome when I want to connect outside of my work network. At home, I used my mac with firefox but it's defaulted to safari because I prefer that but it just doesn't work with my wordpress blog.

Well technically: Javascript, DLL dingleberries, parsing, caching, asynchronous javascript and xml, caching, and memory FAILs we call AJAX.
- Mona Nomura
To be fair - I like the concept of pulling new data w/out refreshing the entire page. However, since JS wasn't thought out to efficiently handle say... 20+ calls: 1. our browsers can't keep up and 2. OUR BROWSERS CAN'T KEEP UP
- Mona Nomura
1 word: compatibility - I have to test sites in multiple browsers, it's part of my job... I now support IE 6/7, FF 2/3, Safari and Chrome. I'm hoping though to drop IE 6 support soon - perhaps by this time next year.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks that FB is only a small step up from MySpace... that is not a compliment either ;-)

It's an epidemic, AJAX is. People need to stop using it until multi tab processing is implemented through all browsers across the board. I ranted about it a while back and keep ongoing screen shots on my Facebook.
- Mona Nomura
Google Analytics doesn't play nice in Firefox these days, so I'm using Chrome for that. I like trying out IE8, and besides, it's a good idea to test my site with the browser that still has the lion's share of the market. But I don't use Safari or Opera. Not at all.

"As difficult and time-consuming, yet thoroughly enjoyable, as it was to narrow down my 25 favorite covers of the year, it was a task made much tougher by one thing: the holiday calendar. Despite what the DC Comics website led me to believe, this week’s releases came out today (2009) and not Wednesday (2008), which meant a couple of early entries had to be bumped off the list late in the game. I’m a stickler, at least when it comes to that. Maybe those covers will make the next edition. I’ve tried to explain, to the best of my ability, what makes the covers so successful, at least in my eyes. In some cases I’ve probably gone overboard, while in others I’ve failed to put a finger on that indefinable quality that makes an image stand out. That’s the nature of art, I suppose."
