... and thinking; your seagoing adventures weren't that bad after all? ;-) maybe don't sell your boat... yet.
- Eric Criens
I hope people don't think I disliked my seagoing adventures... Yes, often I spoke about the difficulty of things, however I do not regret what I've done in the slightest, or think back to them as being bad. I have a feeling maybe I swayed too far in the negative expression of how the trip really was - I just tried to express it as it really was, and like anything difficult, there are many lows, but also many highs. Often the lows are the ones we express most, while we're too busy relishing in the highs...

Great Sail Nick! Australia is almost a stone's throw away now. How did Constellation handle the Force8/9 conditions? Do you have a storm jib / Trysail combination for situations like this?
- Joe
Well, Melbourne is still some miles, but yes, definitely closer than say, England ;) - Constellation is fine in F8/9 conditions, it's the crew that finds it utterly miserable! I run fully reefed main, with the windvane pointing the bow high, and ride it out that way. Seems to work... I do have a storm jib, but usually it's too much hassle to play with, and if the conditions are that bad, I'd rather not try and sail.
- Nick Jaffe
Last night in Palmyra (I know, leaving so soon... But Australia beckons... Next stop Samoa) - Photos updated yesterday: http://www.flickr.com/photos...
All the best on your trip to Samoa Nick. Your blog has been a great inspiration! After you finish your goal of sailing to Austrailia (not that far off now), do you have plans for a future voyage?
- Joe
Thanks Joe - No, I don't have any plans as yet for another voyage in the near future... I think I'll just rest after this one (I've been sailing nearly two years now to get this far...), and see what happens.
- Nick Jaffe
you poor bastard! I'm rooting for ya, Nick! You'll get there.
- Chris Zinner
@noam772 Engine filled with water... so was not wanting to use it after draining in case it had a limited lifespan, which I needed to enter the Palmyra channel. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I did motor the last 31nm
- Nick Jaffe
how? the engine filled with water? is there a leak? is it ok? you can fixe it?
- noam772
Nick, I hope you managed to get to the yacht club office. There is a box there for you. Still has Ken's name on it but they know it's for you. I left messages on that cell yesterday and today.
- Dave Benjamin
Got the sail Dave, and talked to Ken yesterday - THANK YOU! All is perfect.
- Nick Jaffe
Congrats, Nick! You've made it, and right on the Waikiki Beach too! While I'm still fixing an old FJ 13 to sail on a small lake here in Sacramento. Just half of your boat length. :)
- Weide
@Thomas - A British built Contessa 26
- Nick Jaffe
@Weide Thanks! I think I will go surfing after I clear customs! Fj13... Maybe you can set a record and sail it to Hawaii ;)
- Nick Jaffe
Nice Nick. I am planning a trip to Hawaii from San Francisco on a 25' Bahama. I'll be emailing you after you rest up for advice!
- Mike Nichols
Too bad you missed Hilo Hawaii and Lanai. Try to hit Kauai.
- Marcus Anderson
@Thomas - Yes, the Marieholms are very similar to the Contessa, both fibreglass boats based on the Folkboat
- Nick Jaffe
@Marcus - Yes, but I realised the Transpac was coming, and wanted to get into Honolulu and get a slip to make repairs and re-provision before the onslaught of boats. I need to be here to get the parts etc before I keep moving... Hoping to see the north shore and Kaui before I leave.
- Nick Jaffe
Nick, got your email! For how long are you stopping? Don't think my FJ can make it in months if possible at all. Will it count if I put it in the swimming pool on a cruise liner? :)
- Weide
Dear Nick, I wish you fair winds all the way and a wonderful voyage to Hawaii! Will it take about 3-4 weeks? Are you stopping at the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor next to the Waikiki Beach where Ribin Graham stopped in '68 when he was a teen sailing around the world? What's your plan while at around the islands over there? The Big Island harbors Hilo (east side) and Kona (west side) are actually closer, less hectic, and more economical I believe.
- Weide
Thank you Weide - I think I have to go into Hilo to clear in, and also exit out when I leave for the rest of the Pacific - I have very limited time in all these places to make Australia this season... It wouldbe fun to go to Ala Wai, but I guess we'll see how time goes. I expect it to take between 20 and 25 days... Probably the latter with the light winds and under-established high.
- Nick Jaffe
Cool, with the NE trade winds you can pretty much choose wherever you want to stop and all possible. Been to a few islands there (flying). The Hilo side is lush and green, waterfalls, the Kona (Polynesian for leeward) side is overall dry and sunny but there's also the famous Kona wind (can be muggy) blowing on shore. There're different climates on the Big Island, including desert-like terrains, snowy mountain tops, and volcanoes. Pretty interesting, but then every island there is a gem.
- Weide
I really wonder what are the occupations of FriendFeeders :) What is your job? Are we only from IT-marketing-advertising-blogging world? Don't hesitate to answer, we should know each other :)

One less sea-cock to worry about!! Just kidding your outboard would clash with the windvane now stop thinking :-) I know the feeling though... (should I raise my cockpit... Should I take out the sink seacock... Arrrgh I'm so sick of boat thoughts
- Mike Forrest
arrr for what your up to me seafaring mate you need that propeller to stay in the water at all times.and not becone a strange type of wind generator in a big sea way. oh and the boat will become a bit top heavy and upset her stability righting moment... so good idear for enclosed waters and racing ....but you should keep a prop deep and weight low for ocean cruising regards graham[shipwright] central coast australia
- graham soiland
Yes, but if the engine is un-fixable, then it makes more sense to dump it, and at least have an outboard. I have plenty more weight onboard than the designers anticipated already. I could fill the engine compartment with the equivalent weight in water alone... But yes, it makes more sense to keep things as they are, if I can revive the diesel reliably. I simply don't have two weeks and thousands of dollars to throw at the engine - I'm running out of time; I need to be gone in three weeks...
- Nick Jaffe
oh what a worry ,hope you find a sympathetic deisel mech, sorry but i cannot see how you can mount a o/b on your yacht without it drouning in the back wash .witch will engulf your transon in big seas when your motoring... when theres no wind.. or not a favorable direction.. you need a reliable means of propulsion. dont get me rong mate, im just concerned for your saftey its abig ocean...
- graham soiland
Well, if I did have an outboard, it would only be mounted when going in and out of marinas or difficult port entrances - The boat would essentially be engineless. I would not be the first person to sail around without an engine...
- Nick Jaffe
Well, if I did have an outboard, it would only be mounted when going in and out of marinas or difficult port entrances - The boat would essentially be engineless - I would not be the first person to sail around without an engine... Also, I cannot carry any reasonable amount of fuel for motoring more than about 40 hours anyway - I have only once relied on the engine for passage making, crossing the Bay of Biscay. Other than that I've never used it. Also, my batteries are charged by two 43watt solar panels...
- Nick Jaffe
Don't miss Yosemite, the most beautiful, IMHO.
- Weide
I agree! We were unable to visit Yosemite though, as the mountain passes were closed until next month. Hence why we drove up to Lake Tahoe... Really disappointed.
