Well, it's very cold there, so we can negate the conclusion of the title outright. Nonetheless, I take their point. - j1m
@j1m It is actually not very cold there, due to the Gulf Stream. In winter, Reykjavík is warmer than NYC. - ana
@j1m you just don't know what is _real_ cold weather... *giggles* - silpol
I like it there - but does the tap water always smell of sulphur? - Thomas Brox Røst
Great country, blue lagoon is worth the trip alone. .. But now they even have among the highest interest rates (15ish percent) in the western world - http://www.sedlabanki.is/?Page... - Amund Tveit
"'That is not something to be proud of,' said Oddny, with a brisk smile, 'but the fact is that Icelanders don't stay in lousy relationships. They just leave.' And the reason they can do so is that society, starting with the parents and grandparents, does not stigmatise them for making that choice." - edythe
@ana, that's a pretty low bar - j1m
Take that, government-hating republicans! :D - Adam Lasnik
Well the punchline was about Icelanders being *Africans* at heart. Interestingly the World Values Survey doesn't seem to get to much of Africa, but in 2003, Nigeria was at the top of the list of happiest countries, though lower in the list on the "subjective well-being" question. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/afr..., http://thehappinessshow.com/Ha..., etc. I don't suppose we'll see an ad campaign for Nigeria saying that it's "like Iceland - but WARMER!" - Karim
maybe the equation must be read backwards? e.g. highest birth rate is not the cause of being happy, but a consequence. - 9000

"I have used both systems many times, having lived in Britain (27 years) and in the US (5 years). My wife has too - she's half French, half American. Grew up in France and now lives here in the US. Take it from me, compared to the healthcare systems of both Britain and France, the healthcare "system" in the US *sucks*." - Bill Moorier

"If I was building a system like Google Maps, I would have some code that would send me an alert for any search being run where the length of the computed route was greater than some multiple of the Euclidean distance between the start and end points. I wonder if Google do have a system like that, or if they had to wait for someone to email them with the problem." - Bill Moorier

"Evidence is also pretty clear that standardized test measure nothing useful. When kids perform poorly on any given test, year after year, even through multiple curriculum reforms, we have to start taking our attention to the test itself as part of the problem. Kids who are taught using understanding-based instruction (what you call "new math") are shown to perform exceptionally better on tests that measure mathematical reasoning, such as the MAC, for instance. However, they do less well on tests, like the STAR test, that measure rote skills (memorization, and robot-like thinking, what you call "standard methods"). So, which test do you want your kids to out-perform on?" - Bill Moorier

"[Disclaimer: I have a PhD in math and my girlfriend is a 4th grade math teacher] Teaching kids to multiply as fast as calculators will neither help them pick up chicks, nor get jobs. Teaching kids how numbers actually work will at least get them jobs. In any case, anyone who thinks that curriculum design is at the root of public school problems needs to give me some of what they've been smoking." - Bill Moorier

"I'm originally from the UK, and have lived in the US for three years. I have to agree with dogger. Before I came to the US I hadn't written a check in almost a decade. Now there are a bunch of things for which I have no alternative. Particularly annoying is the water company. They will let you pay online rather than with a check, but if you pay online they charge you a $2.50 "convenience fee"! When I opened my account with Washington Mutual the teller asked me how many checks I would require. I said I didn't think I would need any, but he replied that that wasn't an option. I had to order a minimum number of checks to open the account, and I had to *pay* for the checks." - Bill Moorier
