I like this idea: although we might steer clear of the web 2.0 badge. Perhaps 'Live collaboration week', or something like that?
- Matt Wood
Kinda agree. It's probably more negative to use the "science 2.0" label than it is to do "open".
- Deepak Singh
Great idea. Endlessly puzzling to me why most of my colleagues don't use web apps. Maybe this fest would help.

Why not just 'Science tools online' but my concern, as discussed elsewhere is that with too many tools in the social networking space specifically, people are going to be pretty dissappointed once they do sign on because everyone else will be in another walled garden
- Cameron Neylon
I like the idea and also would prefer something like "Web tools for scientists" or "Science tools online". The problems would be like Cameron says that most people might be a bit disappointed with what there is available yet. The other little thing how to get enough people in different cities to get this going. This could be something that local libraries services (in univ or institutes) could be interested in co-organizing.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure if the 2.0 labels have only gained a stigma with early adopters (like most FriendFeeders) or if other not-so-early adopters are becoming more generally skeptical of anything pushing itself as web/science 2.0 as well. I like "Web Tools for Scientists" ... the danger is that people may think it's another "introduction to searching PubMed" type event. Might require a little "market research" :)
- Andrew Perry
A strategy for avoiding disappointment would be to only work with a core set of tools that integrate together nicely, and mostly ignore "walled garden" social networking sites. Including Nature Network would be good to grab attention and credibility (I've noticed most scientists sit up and listen when the Nature name is attached) ... but overall the NN experience isn't great, so I'd be inclined to leave it off the core list.
- Andrew Perry
The other strategy for avoiding disappointment is to simply recognize that it's too early for such an event, and leave it for a later stage when the tools are ready (if "organic growth" doesn't get users collaborating via the web first).
- Andrew Perry
It's a tough question to judge when the time is right for these things. I feel it is a little early at the moment - and that we need to start really looking at the quality of what is available before selling it too hard - but that's just me
- Cameron Neylon
Yes, it's interesting that NN is the least web2.0/social of them all, but the one most likely to get attention due to the brand
- Neil Saunders
The phrase Web2.0 only means something to those who understand what web1.0 is. The people this event should target aren't those people, but rather people who just want an easier way to find papers, protocols, etc.
