There are a ton of apps on the app store that allow rich caching of maps and GPS data for offline use. Sync at home with WiFi and then head out only needing positioning data :)
- Sparky
I have been using OffMaps, that uses OpenStreetMap data. It allows caching of maps like Sparky said. What surprised me was that the simulated GPS function as part of "location services" works reasonably well without GPS and a data connecton! See http://billrodman.wordpress.com/2009... for my experience with it. But, of course, built-in GPS would improve the accuracy markedly.

OffMaps is awesome, as is MotionX GPS. OffMaps has a much better caching UX, but they are both great tools for offline navigation.

A Compass would be great to have. I love my iPod Touch.

I haven't been too impressed with the Compass yet. Yesterday it said I was facing east when I was looking directly into a sunset. When I test it in obvious places like that, it gets snarky.

Oh well, the compass is a bit of a gimmick in any case. Is the GPS on par (at least the GPS receiver) with TomTom, or Garmin dedicated devices?
- Bill Rodman
I haven't tested any GPS apps yet, but will be going on some trips on the next month so hope to try some out then.

If I was able to fit in Twitter's present problems and the Facebook/Friendfeed deal, I might just have something!

Nah, you don't have a viable conspiracy theory unless you manage to squeeze in EITHER ("Area 51" AND Steve Job's pancreatic cancer-to-be-or-not-to-be) OR Sean McBride'an type of blanket finger-pointing at Zionism disguised as a discussion of "ethnical fundamentalism" or something <http://friendfeed.com/ianf...> <http://friendfeed.com/ianf...>

ianf -- what an odd thread in which to pursue this argument, slantwise.
