While this is an old post I share it now because many online retailers are starting to cut spending because of declining sales. Cutting it in the wrong place can further decrease sales. Interesting. Just wanted to point out that Google Adsense now allows for tracking view through conversions. As long as the surfer doesn't delete their cookies within thirty days of them first seeing the ad on the Google content network an advertiser can see who converted as a result of an ad that was seen but not clicked up to thirty days ago...

When we watch Planet Earth, I'm always amazed at the sheer numbers of herds. I like to think of herds as >1000 (is that less than?), but we saw one doc that showed something like 25K gazelles. Amazing. Or the one with the gigantic flock of birds. WOW.

Yes, I've seen NGE, but seriously PE is infinitely better, visually speaking. The only thing that bugs me about PE is the constant, "Thanks to our brand-new, super-expensive technology we were able to be the first to capture this fish swimming." or whatever. Enough with the dick-stroking just give me facts.

Yeah but there isn't much of that to be fair and is completely overshadowed by the quality of the images and documentary. Both NGE and PE are excellent. We get so much of that from the BBC, it's great.

Jandy, to get all Trekkie nerd on you, it's established explicitly that there is no money in Star Trek: that, after World War III and the Eugenics Wars, it was done away with due to a new social understanding of the greater good. I forget if it's canon or not that it was around the same time the replicator was invented (thus eliminating scarcity).

I've proposed a "moneyless" economy as a starting point for thinking about a solution to our current economic crisis , but this immediately received much resistance. I'm not "repulsed" by a money economy, but I'm not repulsed by the idea of a moneyless economy either. The question is what would work better. There are big downsides to using money.

I've often wondered what would happen to our economy now if nearly free energy suddenly became available. The economy mostly boils down to labor+energy and if energy were free, what would happen?

It's interesting, Mike, that in the Star Trek universe, energy is the one thing that *isn't* in seemingly unlimited supply: many an episode used "we need more dilithium crystals to power the warp core" as a plot device, maximum warp is never sustained due to the amount of energy it consumers, and as pointed out earlier, one of the limiting factors of the replicator technology is energy consumption.

Besides all the other reasons you guys pointed out, I always thought this was because they had found (or given by the Vulcans) ways to generate almost unlimited amounts of energy, which would make money unnecessary. It all comes down to energy, doesn't it?

I don't think the issue is the finite amount of energy we have on earth. Price of energy reflects the price of "producing" this energy, which is a combination of the labor costs and the capital costs. The capital costs (like oil rigs to get the oil out of the ground, refineries, offices for the oil companies, etc) also reflect labor costs. We never actually pay nature a dime. So what we're paying for is the "service" for getting the oil out of the ground.

The main issue that for most people nowadays (at least I'm afraid this is the case) the "good life" consists of a continued vacation instead of contributing at least a few hours a day to the common good. We need to pay people because work is presumably something you'd rather not do.

I'm crossing into dangerous territory about my Trekkiocity, but one other thing to throw into the mix is: replicators use goo packs, essentially a mixture of nanobots and organic materials, to create whatever you need. These goo packs are finite in nature (although the materials they create are recycled) and in some cases are rationed. So in a sense, they're like canteen privileges.

Most of the characters we saw on TNG had interesting, intrinsically rewarding work. @Meryn, I'd say that many, if not most, people like to have some form of activity in the long run, even if only to organize their lives. For example, in the real world, the majority of retired people I know fill their lives with volunteer work and/or the pursuit of hobbies. The tricky part is finding enough people to do the tedious stuff.

I do think we can do lots more on "work design", work more on automation and mechanization (thinking about these things is a lot nicer than doing the tedious work itself) and also I think that a lot of tedious stuff simply wouldn't have to be done. I do believe we'll always be left with some "chores" to do. We could either try to distribute them fairly (everyone a few hours of chores each week) or we could explicitly assign status for people doing the "grunt work". Personally I think that current pay-scales need need to be virtually reserved. Doing only knowledge work is a luxury compared to hard manual labor.

i agree with all of the above and it really depends on your objective, i love twitter because it's a great place for generating leads and creating connections where is facebook is more about solidifying those relationships, twitter is quick, easy and viral whereas facebook is more of a richer multimedia experience twitter(at)locspoc

Some friends and I refer to this study often, pointing out when we've failed the marshmallow test. Staying up late is my most common mashmallow test failure (sacrificing morning time to enjoy a few more bleary hours NOW), but it's easy to spot this sort of behavior and fun to have a standard vocabulary to highlight its ubiquity.

As a parent, I consciously used this strategy to distract my children whenever they got in mischief, behaved badly or acted out. As a grandparent, I often send a box of tricks, things like super balls, an "uno" deck, paints, a book, a yoyo or top, for my daughter to use with my grandchildren when they are driving her crazy and need to think about something other than running around screaming.

Today my 4yo daughter was having trouble waiting for a treat, so I told her (and my wife) about reading this article last night. I talked about the ability to distract - and I thought I was doing a pretty good job of explaining it in 4yo terms. When I was done with my paraphrase/lesson, I asked her if she understood. "Uh-huh," she said. Then after a few moments, she asked if we could stop and get some marshmallows on the way home. All I could do is laugh!

I read a different writeup of this experiment a couple years ago, when our daughter was about 1 year old. Its something that can be taught, and encouraged. She's now very good at distracting herself from something which she knows she shouldn't do or would get into trouble over. She's not easily distracted in general: she can focus quite well on something she wants to do (and is allowed to do).

One last comment: a similar complaint has been made for CMEs -- turns out that a lot of CMEs are written and delivered by individuals or companies connected to pharmaceuticals. Thus far, I've not encountered one that didn't make this information crystal clear, but there's no way to know whether those taking the CME have read the information. Even putting it on a page with the "I have read this" button before continuing does not ensure that conflicts are being acknowledged by users.
