What Source Really Generated That Conversion? - http://www.searchengineforums.com/apps...
"Many Web Analytics programs including Google Analytics attribute conversions and sales revenue to the LAST click - not the first visit. This makes a huge difference in where you THINK your sales are coming from and could lead to making decisions on PPC spending that severely impact your sales. The more keywords you're using to display your PPC ads the more likely it is that potential buyers will first find your site by clicking on one of those ads. That action sets a cookie on their PC used to track any eventual sale back to that click. If they search on one PC and buy on another the sale won't be tracked to that ad. Even more likely, there are many actions that will overwrite that cookie including: Clicking on another PPC ad (cookie reset to that keyword instead) Clicking on any organic listing to return to your site Visiting your site from a referral link from a shopping or price comparison site Visiting your site from any other source that has a referral link If that weren't enough opportunities to" - Internet Strategist from Bookmarklet
While this is an old post I share it now because many online retailers are starting to cut spending because of declining sales. Cutting it in the wrong place can further decrease sales. Using Web analytics to determine the source of your buyers can be extremely misleading. See also the additional articles linked from this one. - Internet Strategist
Interesting. Just wanted to point out that Google Adsense now allows for tracking view through conversions. As long as the surfer doesn't delete their cookies within thirty days of them first seeing the ad on the Google content network an advertiser can see who converted as a result of an ad that was seen but not clicked up to thirty days ago... - Benin Brown

Try rolling the cat through a press first. Flat cats fit into the fax easier. - Bob Blunk
Fax, Petr. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test) - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Hehe, Joelle. This is now tied for the 'likes' top stop. One more then, hehe. :-) - Kol Tregaskes

"Though the term “herd behaviour” today is most often used when talking about financial markets, it originally described individuals in a group acting together without direction – for example an animal herd fleeing from a predator. When seen from above, animal herds seem to follow intricate and intriguing patterns." - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet
When we watch Planet Earth, I'm always amazed at the sheer numbers of herds. I like to think of herds as >1000 (is that less than?), but we saw one doc that showed something like 25K gazelles. Amazing. Or the one with the gigantic flock of birds. WOW. - Admiral Anika
Planet Earth is an amazing documentary. I guess Nature's Great Events are on their way to the US soon too. That's another great natural history doc from the BBC. - Kol Tregaskes
Yes, I've seen NGE, but seriously PE is infinitely better, visually speaking. The only thing that bugs me about PE is the constant, "Thanks to our brand-new, super-expensive technology we were able to be the first to capture this fish swimming." or whatever. Enough with the dick-stroking just give me facts. - Admiral Anika
Yeah but there isn't much of that to be fair and is completely overshadowed by the quality of the images and documentary. Both NGE and PE are excellent. We get so much of that from the BBC, it's great. - Kol Tregaskes
You don't think it's a lot? The other night we watched the PE marathon on Discovery. In each hour show, Weaver must have mentioned it 3 - 4 times. That's a lot to me. :) I can't wait to get both series in a boxset, but we agreed that we'll wait until we get a better TV. - Admiral Anika
Anyone know when the new Planet Earth is coming out, i heard they were filming it a long time ago but i know it takes years to make those? - Steve C
Steve, I had no idea there was even a new one in the making. How exciting. - Admiral Anika
Steve, I just realized that the Planet Earth marathon I was watching was narrated by Sigourney Weaver, whereas the old ones were narrated by David Attenborough. Maybe these are the new ones, which explains why I was confused over some of the topics thinking, "Gosh I don't remember that one." - Admiral Anika
New Planet Earth? News to me. I think there is a "movie" coming out or even out but I've not heard of any new series. - Kol Tregaskes
In the U.S. Discovery cut the episodes and redid the narration with Sigourney. Same footage. - Stephen Mack
Ah you can't beat David Attenborough - who could ever replace him? - Kol Tregaskes
I'll have to look it up, but I thought it was in like Discovery magazine that they were making the next set of series. I was wrong once in like the second grade, so I guess it could happen again. - Steve C
Seriously? I liked Attenborough's narration. - Admiral Anika
Anika. That's what I meant. There's no one better IMHO. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
David Attenborough is the king. Nobody else comes close. He's an incredible man- Parkinson did a great interview with him. - Bec Rowe @d0tski
And Attenborough says he has no plans to retire. Yippee for us. :-) - Kol Tregaskes

Mark Trapp
From the Zeray Gazette: "James R. Rummel points out that in the Star Trek universe, there is no money: That always struck me as being exceedingly odd, particularly when I noticed that people were serving drinks in the space station saloons, and generally doing scut work. What motivated these people to get out of bed and work as servants every day, anyway? Where did the ambition to excel and become a starship captain come from? Why would anyone put on a red shirt and accompany the bridge crew as part of an away team?" - Mark Trapp from Bookmarklet
I always figured that banking systems had reached the point that everyone was embedded with a chip or something so that whenever they bought something, the vendor automatically recognized them and their financial arrangements and charged them without any sort of physical monetary transaction needing to take place. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Jandy, to get all Trekkie nerd on you, it's established explicitly that there is no money in Star Trek: that, after World War III and the Eugenics Wars, it was done away with due to a new social understanding of the greater good. I forget if it's canon or not that it was around the same time the replicator was invented (thus eliminating scarcity). - Mark Trapp
Thanks for the clarification! I've only seen some of TOS and DS9, so I guess I didn't know that. Interesting. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
...this future history always messes me up - Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
Mark is right. There's no money in the Federation. Nothing to keep you from sucking down Sorian brandy all day: just turn the Replicator on high and head to the Holodeck every morning. - Chris Baskind
Can I mute this thread? - Richard A.
From the post: "If members of a society can have any common object in unlimited quantities due to replicator technology, or experience anything ordinary in a holodeck, they will begin to crave the uncommon and extraordinary -- and will be willing to work to earn the money (or credits) necessary to purchase them." - John E. Bredehoft
Before the world had a money economy it had barter. Before inter-tribal barter there was intra-tribal reciprocity (people divided up jobs and helped each other). - Bill Romanos
After watching Star Trek for so many years, I think there's something to what you quoted, John, as well as a more socialistic economy: everyone does what they need to do because if nobody did, we'd all be screwed. So, in a way, it's an indirect barter system: I tend bar for you and you make my clothes. That, along with centralized planning, probably goes a long way towards handling any... more... - Mark Trapp
Heck, Star Trek is probably the most down-to-earth thought experiment into the end game of dialectical materialism. Proletariat Vulcans of the galaxy, unite! - Mark Trapp
"an understanding of the social contract that's more or less repulsive now " Can someone explain me what's so repulsive about this? I'm trying to live this way (that is, helping others to the best of my ability), and not think about money. In fact, I don't earn any money now. - Meryn Stol
*sniff* I miss the old days when the future was supposed to be so equal! Are you now, or have you ever been, a proletariat vulcan of the galaxy....? - WorldofHiglet
They named names! And planets! - Mark Trapp
Is it conceivable that there is a detail of the Star Trek universe that was not fully thought through by its all-knowing Creator? - Tim Ostler
meryn: I don't think mark was saying he finds it repulsive, just that society quite often forsakes it for selfish intentions, hence society finds it repulsive. You often find it's argued against whenever the subject of those who posess riches either not getting as much or getting more of it taken away from them to fund safety nets and things like common healthcare. - alphaxion
Zapp Brannigan: "What makes a man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?" I think that says it all. - WorldofHiglet
Alphaxion: I see that I wasn't entirely clear in my question. I wondered why it's found repulsive by some. I've proposed a "moneyless" economy as a starting point for thinking about a solution to our current economic crisis , but this immediately received much resistance. I'm not "repulsed" by a money economy, but I'm not repulsed by the idea of a moneyless economy either. The question is what would work better. There are big downsides to using money. - Meryn Stol
To my point, I give you this essay: http://www.stardestroyer.net/Empire... Those damn commies! "The primary goal of this document is to show that the writers and producers of Star Trek are promoting the values and ideals of communism. I should note that this has not always been the case; the TOS Federation was clearly a free market, and I can only imagine that some... more... - Mark Trapp
I've often wondered what would happen to our economy now if nearly free energy suddenly became available. The economy mostly boils down to labor+energy and if energy were free, what would happen? - mikepk
It's interesting, Mike, that in the Star Trek universe, energy is the one thing that *isn't* in seemingly unlimited supply: many an episode used "we need more dilithium crystals to power the warp core" as a plot device, maximum warp is never sustained due to the amount of energy it consumers, and as pointed out earlier, one of the limiting factors of the replicator technology is energy consumption. - Mark Trapp
Besides all the other reasons you guys pointed out, I always thought this was because they had found (or given by the Vulcans) ways to generate almost unlimited amounts of energy, which would make money unnecessary. It all comes down to energy, doesn't it? - Alejandro
that's on a ship, Mark. I don't think it's the same on earth. - Alejandro
I don't think the issue is the finite amount of energy we have on earth. Price of energy reflects the price of "producing" this energy, which is a combination of the labor costs and the capital costs. The capital costs (like oil rigs to get the oil out of the ground, refineries, offices for the oil companies, etc) also reflect labor costs. We never actually pay nature a dime. So what we're paying for is the "service" for getting the oil out of the ground. - Meryn Stol
The main issue that for most people nowadays (at least I'm afraid this is the case) the "good life" consists of a continued vacation instead of contributing at least a few hours a day to the common good. We need to pay people because work is presumably something you'd rather not do. - Meryn Stol
The starship is run in a militaristic fashion. I assume that if ensign red-shirt doesn't do as he is told by Picard, he gets thrown into the brig for insubordination. However, if that's what motivates people to do their jobs, it's a harsher world than I thought. - Morton Fox
I'm crossing into dangerous territory about my Trekkiocity, but one other thing to throw into the mix is: replicators use goo packs, essentially a mixture of nanobots and organic materials, to create whatever you need. These goo packs are finite in nature (although the materials they create are recycled) and in some cases are rationed. So in a sense, they're like canteen privileges. - Mark Trapp
Morton, I think that works for Starfleet, but it doesn't explain everything else. Unless you also posit that everyone has a specific function, and it'd be illegal not to perform that function; however, the United Federation of Planets is portrayed as a free society. - Mark Trapp
Certainthe Ferengi are commerce minded. Hpowever, the Klingons and the Romulans ( to name a few) seem to be command oriented sovient style societies. - Roberto Bonini
Most of the characters we saw on TNG had interesting, intrinsically rewarding work. @Meryn, I'd say that many, if not most, people like to have some form of activity in the long run, even if only to organize their lives. For example, in the real world, the majority of retired people I know fill their lives with volunteer work and/or the pursuit of hobbies. The tricky part is finding enough people to do the tedious stuff. - Rebecca
"The tricky part is finding enough people to do the tedious stuff." Yup, that's the hardest part. I do think we can do lots more on "work design", work more on automation and mechanization (thinking about these things is a lot nicer than doing the tedious work itself) and also I think that a lot of tedious stuff simply wouldn't have to be done. Lots of consumption is fueled by advertising. - Meryn Stol
Also, working as a craftsman is a lot more satisfying than being an anonymous drone in a factory. Economies could work on a much smaller scale. - Meryn Stol
To quote Office Space, "Peter Gibbons: Our high school guidance counselor used to ask us what you'd do if you had a million dollars and you didn't have to work. And invariably what you'd say was supposed to be your career. So, if you wanted to fix old cars then you're supposed to be an auto mechanic. / Samir: So what did you say? / Peter Gibbons: I never had an answer. I guess that's... more... - Mark Trapp
I do believe we'll always be left with some "chores" to do. We could either try to distribute them fairly (everyone a few hours of chores each week) or we could explicitly assign status for people doing the "grunt work". Personally I think that current pay-scales need need to be virtually reserved. Doing only knowledge work is a luxury compared to hard manual labor. - Meryn Stol
there is always a scarcity of services, and knowledge - Mike Chelen
that and the oldest currency is that of the swapping of goods. You live in an area where you can't grow a specific plant, you trade items for it with those who can grow it. This scales up to various goods people can create that others can't. It eventually becomes the scarcity of serfices, goods and knowledge mentioned above. - alphaxion

How to open clamshell packaging - http://green.yahoo.com/blog...
How to open clamshell packaging
Thousands of people end up in emergency rooms each year with lacerations and puncture wounds from battling with the nearly impossible-to-open packaging. Many more get minor wounds from using sharp objects to open packages, according to American Medical News. - Shey, Jamaican of FF from Bookmarklet
Dealing with "clamshell" or "oyster" packaging (the rigid, sealed plastic that lots of electronics come in) can be a real nightmare. In fact, the term "wrap rage" was coined to describe the anger and frustration that inevitably arises when trying to pry the ubiquitous packaging open. - Shey, Jamaican of FF
Yeah, this is what box cutters are for. - Cristo
Whoever invented clamshell packaging should be poked to death with their own invention. - ronin
ronin, even better would be to seal them in it without any tools to get out. :) - Cristo

The Hotties of FriendFeed (My FF Crushes)
hotties-of-FF.jpg
By no means a complete list. :D - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
SCREW YOU HAGGIS... I wax me legs, I spend hours in the hairdressers and weeks doing my makeup for you... YOU BASTARD... I HATE YOU... *runs off sobbing* - Johnny Worthington
Oh I have you in another list Johnny: Crossdressing Australians of FF. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Well hey thanks! - Brandy Lea
Did I say I wear a dress? Oh wait, yeah I have in the 25 Things - Johnny Worthington
*grabs popcorn* - Josh Haley
Well I saw the Bra, so I only guessed at the rest of the ensemble. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
... one needs support for one man-tits or one will get a sore back... HEY! EYES UP HERE BUDDY! - Johnny Worthington
You certainly grabbed many of them - RAPatton
I should have been there. - Nation Hahn
lol - Cee Bee
Aww, I hope I'm not offending anyone by not including them on the list. Many times I just go by the avatar and if it's a cartoon or something it's hard to tell and I won't put on here, and also these are just *my* personal tastes. Everyone has different types! - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Any woman with the brass to be on FF is a hottie in my book. - Chris Baskind
Wow - that'd be a drag to be on a list like that. Still, as I always say, if you want to get a lot of followers get a hot chick avatar. It's sad but it's iJustine. True! I mean true. It's sad but it's true. - Ciaoenrico
++ Chris! - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Lindsay and Sarah I will agree with however I will not like this cause there is no MONA! - Shawn aka ringking
Sean, how could you miss Dee: http://friendfeed.com/holycool ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
What are you talking about? She's the last one on the fifth row. :D - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
bow chick wow wow! - Morgan Haley
@Kol, She's got a Simpsons avatar, and I don't see any pics in her feed? - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
They forgot me....can you do a redo? - @CrystalinaB
Honorable mention? (and I added you to my list) - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Yay! I'm married to a hottie! - Chrimmus Tad
Whew, I'm glad I'm not on that list. - Christian (Simply X)
Sean, what the hell is my sister doing on this list!?! - jamar78
!!! Who is your sister Joel? I didn't even know! *hides* - Haggis (Sean Loyless)

hahahahahahaha - what about the boys??!! - ♥ Stephiepooos ♥
yeeha! Chris Baskind GREAT answer! - @CrystalinaB
All I know is that when the boy's list comes out I better be on that or all hell is going to break loose!!! - jamar78
Happy to see everyone there, a few in particular ;) - Timothy Griffin
I'd hide it too, if my sense of fairness didn't kick in...So these are just women? Where are the MALE hotties of FF. :p ;) - Helen Sventitsky
The picture is too small to see. Am I on it? - Martha
@Helen Start up the Male Hotties list yourself! I find men hairy and repulsive. :D - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
LOL MARTHA!! - Mona Nomura
I wonder... Would I be on the male hotties list? :p - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
hahahaha.... when's the calendar coming out? - Thomas Hawk
@Thomas hahahaha - Shevonne
Ciaoenrico I kinda take offense to that. My avatar is me, it's my face and I shared it on FF after a LOT of thought about it (plus some gender confusion, but that's another story). Because a woman might be considered attractive she *shouldn't* user her face as an avatar otherwise she's just trying to get followers? Bull crap, and sexist to boot. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
@Tina +++++ - Shevonne
@Sean, I couldn't agree more. :D Tina, YAY! - Helen Sventitsky
Agreed, Tina. That certainly wasn't the point of this list - it was merely a way to point out all of my FF crushes at once. I hope no one takes offense to it. :( - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I'm offended....I wasn't on this effing list!! - jamar78
Sean, I'm not offended, personally. I find it rather amusing. The title of this post, to me, however, seemed rather "definitive". YMMV. :D - Helen Sventitsky
I mean my sis' made list sheesh!! - jamar78
I think I'm due for a new picture. I've used the same one since joining. - Rochelle
Rochelle, you had that other one, the B&W one of you smiling. That was great, too - Josh Haley
Quite a collection. There should be a male list too but then that could lead to a match-making game and apps being developed and other memes ... and ... oh dear ... - Amani
I'm not a crush, eh? :P - Tamar Weinberg
@Amani is that what you wanted to talk to me about? Creating that app? haha - Shevonne
We totally need a boys list, totally. And I'll pretend I'm not crying in a corner over here. - Bec Rowe @d0tski
I don't know how I feel about this... - Derrick
Dammit.. I'm about to delete this post. It was not my intention to hurt anyone's feelings. :( - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I don't think it's a problem pointing out your crushes, hun. I think it's the fact that it's titled "The Hotties of FriendFeed" that can make people kind of uncomfy. That comes across as a direct judgment of peoples' looks, even though we know you didn't mean it that way. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
@Sean don't ever apologize for your actions. - Shevonne
Okay, I think I understand.. Thanks Amanda.. I just updated the title, hopefully it will let everyone know that this is my own personal list, and by no means a judgement of anyone. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
It's not my scene, but hey...whatevs. It just feels a little meat market-ish to me. People aren't avatars, and I know a couple on the list who wouldn't be proud of being reduced to a FF hottie on someone's list. - Derrick
This whole thing spun out of control rapidly. Impressive. - Mike Nayyar
Okay, I hope this is better: http://friendfeed.com/e... - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Derrick - But a lot of the stuff you post to the really gay room is pretty meat market-ish. Just because they're professional models it's okay to objectify them? We naturally objectify each other because we naturally are sexual creatures. I'm not offended by being on this list, but I don't like being objectified and I think what Haggis has done is a sweet gesture, not a gesture of blind testosterone rubbing one out. - Mattie Kenny
Didn't anyone see me grab the popcorn earlier? That's your 1st clue. - Josh Haley
I'm not offended at all btw :) - Tamar Weinberg
Thx Matsie <3 - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
LOL - Pedram
Sean you created a monster didn't you....hehe - jamar78
Ugh.. no kidding.. I guarantee this list will never be mentioned again outside of these posts. I think i'm gonna unplug for a while and let this all die down. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
ok i just now read the whole thread damnit i always miss everything lol joel... ::shakes head:: u kno to some i'm not a lil sister lol ur so funny i luv u! - Cardeen Martinez
don't let it get to you Sean....all that matters is that you had no malicious intent which you didn't - jamar78
**blushes** - gee thanks. :) And go hide for a while, Sean... it'll all blow over. - Jen (SquirrelGirl)
nice list, i have about half of these in a group called "sexy people" - sean percival
Mattie, any pics I post in the Really Gay Room are A) *in* the Really Gay Room, and B) pictures culled from sites that are meat-marketish to begin with. I would never post pics of Scoble or Louis Gray and say, "oh these are guys I'd like to see naked". And I'm not knocking Sean. I freakin' love Sean. But I also know that there are women on the list who've worked hard at getting to where they are in life and in their careers and to be thought of as a pin-up on FF isn't their bag. - Derrick
It's about time you chimed in Leather...LMAO...love it...haha - jamar78
Leather Donut, Don't ever change! :) - Michelle Martinez
I second her notion...hehe - jamar78
I don't see how posting this in a room would make it any different a situation, Derrick. I don't think that Sean ever said he wanted to see any of the women on the list naked. Is that something I skipped over while scanning the comments? If he said that, then yes. This list is pretty lame. But being admired for your beauty isn't bad. Especially since (for me at least) being a hottie entails being incredibly intelligent and engaging. - Mattie Kenny
Mattie, that's exactly what I consider a hottie. Attractiveness is only part of the factor. Intelligence, a sense of humor, and many other things go into that equation. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I see a potential calendar. - Paul
Mattie, I'm not going to fight with you over this. If you want to split ends, say I'm a hypocrite, or engage in double standards, feel free. I don't care. Very simply, I know people who don't want to be referred to as hotties. By anyone. I see them on the list. I speak up. That's it. There are 50 people in the RGR, maybe 20 people see it regularly. That's a HUGE difference than the numbers of people who sub to the home feed. But you know what? Forget I even opened my mouth. Apparently I've become a prude... - Derrick
That's not what I'm saying, Derrick. Now I understand what you meant by putting the photos up in the RGR versus what Haggis did. Did these women speak up for themselves and say they don't appreciate being called attractive? - Mattie Kenny
<3 Derrick.. I appreciate what you are saying, and think it's very commendable that you are seeing this from an angle I didn't really see. I know you only have the best intentions with what you are saying. Please no more fighting over this.. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I just happen to know them, Mattie. And I didn't say they didn't appreciate being called attractive. I said they, knowing them as I do, woudn't appreciate being culled up on a list and pointed out for the world to ogle. - Derrick
Sean, you know how I feel about you bud, and I'm not putting you on blast. Consider my hands washed of it. - Derrick
Mattie, how about you look at it from the flip side...those women who DIDN'T make the list and don't have the benefit of feeling all bubbly inside because they've been deemed "attractive"? It's all well and good when you're on the winning team, apparently. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
yeah Sean you are a good person....don't beat yourself up about it - jamar78
Although you better take my sis' out this damn list!! hehe - jamar78
Awesome post, Sean! - George The Writer
Amanda - I don't think not being on the list deems you unattractive and I don't think Haggis is the be all end all of who is or is not attractive. Wow. I'm on the list. BFD. I don't feel or bubbly inside, nor did I take it very seriously. It didn't blip in my radar until I saw people taking major offense to Haggis having posted the list, in which case I looked at it & was surprised to see myself there. I'm not on any "team". - Mattie Kenny
Haggis, I love the conversations you spawn... feel free to include me in future provocative topics. ~xxxooo~ - Far
I would like to state for the record, should there be a men's list...I would like to opt out. That is all, thank you. - Christian (Simply X)
Ok gents, let's show the ladies how we roll. (and can someone email me that info ahead of time, so I look like I know what I'm doing?) - Morgan Haley
Oh too funny. Thanks for including me, Sean. ;-) - Jennifer Leggio

Ok my cat is really pist off...didn't make the cut...gees! LOL - Susan Beebe
Aaaw, Sean! <3 - Nia
This list is approved, mainly because one certain hottie is the better half :) Sean, not only do you represent a great product, but also exceptional taste. Sir, I owe you a drink! ;) - Matt Harwood
I'm amazed that neither Lisa Bettany nor Sarah Lacy are showing up in any of these clique building seminar visual aides. - Matthew DeVries
Ok I am not the brightest crayon in the box so I want to know how the hell do you see a list of people like that. I have different lists but where do I go to see all in just that one list? - Brandy Lea
Brandy, you see this view when you go into one of your lists then select to Add/Remove friends. - Kol Tregaskes
I think what Brandy is asking is if she can see someone else's list, which we can't. Haggis might have made a list that is friendfeed.com/list/hotties and he'll see it when he's logged in, but no one else would see it if they went to that same URL. He wouldn't even see it if he logged out and went to that URL. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Saw this comin'. Nice job Sean :) - Charlie Anzman
Hey, what am I doing there??? I just saw it now :| - Bibi
Booyah! - Josh Haley
LOL Josh. I was waiting for someone to do this. :D - Haggis (Sean Loyless)

I don't think I was subscribed to you when I made this list, Jeunelle. This is almost a year old! :D - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Don't misunderstand what I mean. I mean I am thankful I didn't make the list period. PRAISE THE LORD :) - Jeunelle Foster
We should have an Academy Award of FriendFeed or something. That I would have a long ass speech prepared telling everybody how I'd like to thank all the little people who were responsible for me winning that award and it should be sponsored by Mashable and FFundercats :) - Jeunelle Foster

7 Reasons Why I’d Rather Use Twitter Over Other Social Networks - http://shegeeks.net/7-reaso...
i agree with all of the above and it really depends on your objective, i love twitter because it's a great place for generating leads and creating connections where is facebook is more about solidifying those relationships, twitter is quick, easy and viral whereas facebook is more of a richer multimedia experience twitter(at)locspoc - Loc
Interesting that the author uses "other social networks" in the title, but then really only compares Twitter to Facebook. Where's the Friendfeed love? I'd say, other than the fact that the user base isn't here, yet, FF offers more of what the author's looking for than Twitter. - Curtiss Grymala

Psychedelics and Religious Experience - http://deoxy.org/w_psyrel.htm
"Inability to accept the mystic experience is more than an intellectual handicap. Lack of awareness of the basic unity of organism and environment is a serious and dangerous hallucination. For in a civilization equipped with immense technological power, the sense of alienation between man and nature leads to the use of technology in a hostile spirit—to the "conquest" of nature instead of intelligent co-operation with nature. The result is that we are eroding and destroying our environment, spreading Los Angelization instead of civilization. This is the major threat overhanging Western, technological culture, and no amount of reasoning or doom-preaching seems to help. We simply do not respond to the prophetic and moralizing techniques of conversion upon which Jews and Christians have always relied." - Goran Zec
"The Western scientist may rationally perceive the idea of organism-environment, but he does not ordinarily feel this to be true. By cultural and social conditioning, he has been hypnotized into experiencing himself as an ego-as an isolated center of consciousness and will inside a bag of skin, confronting an external and alien world. We say, "I came into this world." But we did nothing... more... - Goran Zec
"This "put-down" theory of man is extremely common among such quasi scientists as sociologists, psychologists, and psychiatrists, most of whom are still thinking of the world in terms of Newtonian mechanics, and have never really caught up with the ideas of Einstein and Bohr, Oppenheimer and Schrodinger. [...] And, incidentally, it is just this kind of quasi scientist who, as consultant to government and law-enforcement agencies, dictates official policies on the use of psychedelic chemicals." - Goran Zec
"The first characteristic is a slowing down of time, a concentration in the present. One's normally compulsive concern for the future decreases, and one becomes aware of the enormous importance and interest of what is happening at the moment. Other people, going about their business on the streets, seem to be slightly crazy, failing to realize that the whole point of life is to be fully... more... - Goran Zec

Don’t! The secret of self-control. - http://www.newyorker.com/reporti...
Don’t!
The secret of self-control.
"At the time, psychologists assumed that children’s ability to wait depended on how badly they wanted the marshmallow. But it soon became obvious that every child craved the extra treat. What, then, determined self-control? Mischel’s conclusion, based on hundreds of hours of observation, was that the crucial skill was the “strategic allocation of attention.” Instead of getting obsessed with the marshmallow—the “hot stimulus”—the patient children distracted themselves by covering their eyes, pretending to play hide-and-seek underneath the desk, or singing songs from “Sesame Street.” Their desire wasn’t defeated—it was merely forgotten. “If you’re thinking about the marshmallow and how delicious it is, then you’re going to eat it,” Mischel says. “The key is to avoid thinking about it in the first place.” In adults, this skill is often referred to as metacognition, or thinking about thinking, and it’s what allows people to outsmart their shortcomings. (When Odysseus had himself tied to... more... - Paul Buchheit from Bookmarklet
This is an interesting quote because it implies that "will power" is more about mental strategy, not some kind of mental strength for forcing yourself to do something. I have the same strategy with food -- I eat whatever I see, so in order to not eat something I just need to put it out of sight. - Paul Buchheit
effectively "out of sight, out of mind" - alphaxion
This is where the magic of science is: you spend time and resources to prove a proverb. - .i.m.a.r.s.o.r.a.m.a.
"The child who could wait fifteen minutes had an S.A.T. score that was, on average, two hundred and ten points higher than that of the kid who could wait only thirty seconds." - J.D. Deutschendorf
Sometimes I worry my metacognition is slowing me down because I'm spending less time just cogniting. (that oughtta be a word.) But no, in all seriousness, I think something, then realize the thought was there before I subvocalized it, and then I go in a circle several times subvocalizing those same thoughts as I examine the process of thinking. Frustrating! - Andrew C
Some friends and I refer to this study often, pointing out when we've failed the marshmallow test. Staying up late is my most common mashmallow test failure (sacrificing morning time to enjoy a few more bleary hours NOW), but it's easy to spot this sort of behavior and fun to have a standard vocabulary to highlight its ubiquity. - Seth
Episode on Mischel's marshmallows on RadioLab -- http://blogs.wnyc.org/radiola... - Alex Haar
As a parent, I consciously used this strategy to distract my children whenever they got in mischief, behaved badly or acted out. As a grandparent, I often send a box of tricks, things like super balls, an "uno" deck, paints, a book, a yoyo or top, for my daughter to use with my grandchildren when they are driving her crazy and need to think about something other than running around screaming. - Phil Boiarski
OK, that makes sense, but let's flip this on its head - How do you instead keep your mind on something and prevent yourself from getting distracted? You can't distract yourself from your distractions. Andrew C, the word you're looking for is cogitating. - Mr. Gunn
Mr Gunn, thanks. Though I think 'cogniting' is a touch funnier. - Andrew C
Some chimpanzees use this strategy as well, though not all of them. - Björn Brembs

I'm going to marshmallow-train my kids!! - Jess Lee
Today my 4yo daughter was having trouble waiting for a treat, so I told her (and my wife) about reading this article last night. I talked about the ability to distract - and I thought I was doing a pretty good job of explaining it in 4yo terms. When I was done with my paraphrase/lesson, I asked her if she understood. "Uh-huh," she said. Then after a few moments, she asked if we could stop and get some marshmallows on the way home. All I could do is laugh! - Gary Walter (gwalter)
I read a different writeup of this experiment a couple years ago, when our daughter was about 1 year old. Its something that can be taught, and encouraged. She's now very good at distracting herself from something which she knows she shouldn't do or would get into trouble over. She's not easily distracted in general: she can focus quite well on something she wants to do (and is allowed to do). - DGentry

Ghostwriting: The Dirty Little Secret of Medical Publishing That Just Got Bigger (via @hleman) #PLoS - http://www.plosmedicine.org/article...
"If you are an editor, author, reviewer, or reader of medical journals, or if you depend on your doctor or health care provider getting unbiased information from medical journals, then the 1,500 documents now hosted on the PLoS Medicine Web site should make you very concerned and angry." - Noah Gray from Bookmarklet
"Medical journal editors need to decide whether they want to roll over and just join the marketing departments of pharmaceutical companies. Authors who put their names to such papers need to consider whether doing so is more important than having a medical literature that can be believed in. Politicians need to consider the harm done by an environment that incites companies into insane... more... - Noah Gray

Holy censorbot, Batman! There's like 1% of some of those depositions readable. I'm sure as soon as certain media establishments (*FoxNews*) get a hold of this it's going to be "They want to regulate these companies and it'll kill our medical leadership and innovation and lead up down the slippery slope towards socialized medicine" or some such wharrgarrrbl - Mr. Gunn
Looks like somebody has already been indoctrinated by the socialist agenda...no need for you to watch the speech tonight then! I for one am going to stick my fingers in my ears, cover my eyes and hum so I don't become a European zombie... - Noah Gray
Don't hum. You must chant "socialism death panels rationing and taxes" to break the spell. - Mr. Gunn
That's a catchy little mantra, MrGunn. - Bill Hooker
It works!!! +11!11! - Noah Gray from iPhone
And there are still those who contend that open access journals equal bad science... - Hope Leman
Editorial makes very interesting statement, but fails to tackle another "dirty little secret" that plagues the medical publishing industry: MOST PRACTICING PHYSICIANS DON'T HAVE TIME TO WRITE. In fact, relatively few medical practitioners outside the academic industry have time to collect their knowledge, gleaned through decades of practice, and put it down into a form that would be... more... - Mickey Schafer
Hope, I agree that open access journals are great -- but I've yet to talk to a single practicing health provider who knows that they exist. Now, this could be just my pool of participants (I've got an IRB to do this research), which is still really small, but hell, I live in an academic town and between me and the kids, I encounter a lot of MDs/DDMs -- none of whom have ever head of... more... - Mickey Schafer
"Over the past several years some journals and editors' organizations [9],[10], and even some individual medical writers [11], have pursued what might be called a war of attrition against the practice by requiring contributorship statements for authors and publishing them, insisting on the naming of all who were involved in writing, requiring detailed competing interest statements, and... more... - Mickey Schafer
One last comment: a similar complaint has been made for CMEs -- turns out that a lot of CMEs are written and delivered by individuals or companies connected to pharmaceuticals. Thus far, I've not encountered one that didn't make this information crystal clear, but there's no way to know whether those taking the CME have read the information. Even putting it on a page with the "I have read this" button before continuing does not ensure that conflicts are being acknowledged by users. - Mickey Schafer
Saw this from Steve Silberman: Editor used MS Word metadata to uncover medical ghostwriting http://bit.ly/4qlm8l - Noah Gray
That was an interesting read, Noah. So many of the med writers I've read wish to be more present in publication -- does make one wonder why a writer would not put their name on a publication. IMHO, it seems that any research group -- or, perhaps, academic units to which researchers belong -- would have on staff a writing consultant/editor, just because it makes things easier on... more... - Mickey Schafer
