A note on Chris's blog at thelongtail.com reads: "FREE will be available in all digital forms--ebook, web book, and audiobook--for free shortly after the hardcover is published on July 7th (exact dates will be announced in the posts at left as each form is released). The ebook and web book will be free for a limited time and limited to certain geographic regions as determined by each national publisher; the unabridged audiobook will be available free forever, available in all regions." Sounds great, but I just heard about the book today.

@bnbuzz, why does the Nook have an iPhone and Blackberry app, but nothing for the mobile operating system that it runs on?
Why aren't netflix PS3 streaming movies actually HD? I'd be willing to wait an hour or more for a full-sized mpeg to buffer if the quality were actually 720p or 1080p. They wouldn't be able to call it "Netflix Instant", but "Netflix Pretty Soon and Crystal Clear" would be just fine.
A fantastic look at O'Reilly's online library and insight into how and why they are advancing the state of the way we will read books in the future.

Blockbuster Culture's Next Rise or Fall: The Impact of Recommender Systems on Sales Diversity (PDF) http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3...
"Abstract: This paper examines the effect of recommender systems on the diversity of sales. Two anecdotal views exist about such effects. Some believe recommenders help consumers discover new products and thus increase sales diversity. Others believe recommenders only reinforce the popularity of already popular products. This paper seeks to reconcile these seemingly incompatible views. We explore the question in two ways. First, modeling recommender systems analytically allows us to explore their path dependent effects. Second, turning to simulation, we increase the realism of our results by combining choice models with actual implementations of recommender systems. We arrive at three main results. First, some well known recommenders can lead to a reduction in sales diversity. Because common recommenders (e.g., collaborative filters) recommend products based on sales and ratings, they cannot recommend products with limited historical data, even if they would be rated favorably.
