"The Volkswagen Microbus is a classic - even to those of us born after its time. Arguably unlike the newly remade Beetle, this remake of a VW classic is remarkably true to the original on the outside - but on the inside it is a bio-diesel hybrid stuffed full of high tech gadgetry and eco-friendly innovations."

Super cool VW Bus making a comeback...
- Walt Ruppar
First of all, I'll cop to wanting one of these. That being said, Jason is right. This is for rich hippies (who probably aren't hippies at all). The VW microbus became the darling of the Flower Power crowd because it was cheap, easy to repair, and big. You could camp in it. Is there a car today that fits this bill?
- Chris Baskind
wow, you can buy an awful lot of pot with $129,000.
- Thomas Hawk
I don't know a self-respecting hippie that would prefer this over a really nice indoor greenhouse. ;-)
- Chris Baskind
@Chris, Most cars today aren't as simple, but with the wealth of knowledge online, it just takes more time. The minivan/SUV can become a camper van with a few mods. They'll never take the place of the VW, but they're an updated version of the 70s panelvan conversions (hopefully without shag carpeting & a disco-ball).
- Steven Cains
Nope: there will never be anything that simple again. That's not all bad: I can't imagine a 1960s VW Minibus would satisfy *any* federal safety standard these days. You're right. A used minivan might be the closest thing.
- Chris Baskind
Very Cool. You can't drive your house but, you can sleep in your Van !!!
- Eric Logan
Very intriguing. How much steel is in that thing? Chris, that would be my next question after fuel consumption: how safe is this thing? And I agree, when we can go back to making transportation that costs less than a small home, we may have achieved something amazing. ;)
- Melanie Reed
However, I have heard (and I'm not remembering where at the moment) that there has been a movement growing of people seeking alternative housing and substituting things like this as the new "mobile" home.
- Melanie Reed
Everyone is loving this! We should have an FF one and use it to travel to all the FFers around the World (like Pea seems to be doing ;-)). Hehe. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
cool idea, kol. the ff-stream of this tour would be alltheawe. just imagine the photos.

I've owned 5 VWs, two of which were split window vans. I'd love to have another, this is awesome!
- Rick Bucich
from twhirl
I have had more VWs than other cars...starting with a 71 Superbeetle, and a Split Window Microbus. I would LOVE to have something like this.
- Kreg Steppe
Good for grandparents to visit grandchildren and children through the European continent (or another one as well)...nomadism-revival!
- Isabelle Ayel
wow i posted this a while back and now can't seem to find it for some reason. friendfeed's search function really sucks!
- Cee Bee
So after reading this article yesterday, I found myself this evening in front of a local place that specializes in reconditioning old VWs. It was closed, but there's an awesome red and white microbus out front with a For Sale sign on it. Ugly, underpowered -- and probably dangerous, by modern standards. Want. ;-)
- Chris Baskind
Cee, really? I find FF search is pretty good.
- Kol Tregaskes
I love this Mobile...owned a few Vdubs, lived in a VW camper, but this is off the hook..I would become a true nomad with this...
- bcultral
I'd like to have something like this, something small. What do you really need? A bed, perhaps a TV and room for your computer. Then you can live anywhere you like, in theory.
- Kol Tregaskes
Who is this Canadian designer Alexandre Verdier? Seems like he is on Facebook, Linked In but I can't seem to find anything else about him.
- Brian Sullivan
We had a wesvalia built Micro when I was a kid. I loved that thing. It was a little flimsily built; but boy it was perfect for my family of campers and road-tripping warriors. Too bad this one is so pricey
- Bill Rawlinson
"Introducing fit-PC2 CompuLab introduces fit-PC2 – the smallest, most power-efficient Intel Atom PC to date. fit-PC2 architecture is what sets it apart from other nettop PCs - fit-PC2 is designed around the Intel Atom Z530 1.6GHz and the ultra low power Intel US15W system controller hub, rather than the Atom N270 and 945G used in other nettop-PCs, thereby reducing power consumption by more than two thirds. US15W incorporates hardware video acceleration. This allows fit-PC2 to run Windows XP or Ubuntu Linux at just 6W and to play full HD 1080p H.264 video using less than 7W."

some limitations of the fit2pc: no n wifi, only 1gb ram & is soldered, reader is not sdhc, no wol, hdmi still needs sep audio line. if it could remedy those, then it would be more awesome than i originally thought it was. still cool idea. (edited to add: forums say hdmi does not support hdcp. boy, lots of surprises in what it *can't* do. almost a parody of an 'efficient' device.)

Got error when clicked the link. Actually I thought I could show the screenshot, but ff can not add images to comments.

I hope it is a cheap as a laptop or even cheaper!! ;) that would be a great deal!!

And here I was waiting for netbooks to get better performance and instead we see the same low performance spreading from the mobile world, where it made sense, to our desks. Crud. It's nice that it's got low power requirements, but that seems to be it.
- Henrik
When do they start building the computer into the keyboard?
- Brian Sieker
I need a small, very low power consumption system with two ethernet ports to replace a home server. The fit-PC2 is so tantalizingly close; I'd have to add a USB ethernet dongle, and those are teh suck.
- DGentry
"Want" is a serious understatement. I could do some evil, evil things with that!
- ax0n
Very sexy! I can imagine having three or four of these with SSDs around my house.

For the right (low) price, even with it's flaws it could be a great little media server. And here I was wishing upon an eee-box-star.

sɹǝɥʇɐǝɟʞɔɐןq: Thanks for those helpful pieces of info. Please consider using punctuation and capitalization in the future. I know it's not cool, but it serves a purpose (e.g. it helps knowledge transfer, the supposed reason for commenting in the first place) :P.

The newer boards use a dual-core Atom and NVidia 9400M chipset. Even has CUDA support. I believe it could decode 1080p. http://mini-itx.com/2009...

Looks great. I want also. I'll wait for Windows 7.
- Scott Kraatz
Smaller than a MacMini. I'll wait for Windows 7 too.

I'd love to attach this to the back of a monitor and hang it on a wall

Brian Sieker: Asus already started stuffing the whole pc inside a (nice looking) keyboard, take a look at the Eee Keyboard http://gizmodo.com/5124985...

Actually, these "fails" really should just be rejected by failblog, because they're vandalism, not fails. It's someone coming up and changing their sign for them.
- Matthew DeVries
why reject them it's just giving the prosecution the evidence they need :)
- John Blanton

I mean, I just don't see vandalism in the same vein as a real fail.

"Scientists have rendered objects invisible to near-infrared light. Unlike previous such "cloaks", the new work does not employ metals, which introduce losses of light and result in imperfect cloaking. Because the approach can be scaled down further in size, researchers say this is a major step towards a cloak that would work for visible light."

I bring my shoe shopping woes to you, FF. Help me pick out which shoes I should get. I'm really indecisive and they all look pretty cool. Trying to go with versatility with the wardrobe, which would make me lean toward the brown shoes. But everyone really digs the black ones with the red...
I would personally get a pair of the brown and tan and the black and white....but then again I own a pair of black and a pair of brown shoes in every style I have (casual, work, yardwork...)
- Christian (Simply X)
I like pair #3. I suggest you look at those 4 inch pumps I recommended, though.
- Mike Nayyar
I would go more wit hthe collors. White sneakers with red, white sneakers with blue or maybe white sneakers with black... that should look great.
- Mirco
Personally, I love the black/gray/red ones. It would be more versatile for me - that's mostly what colors I wear. But if the brown are more versatile for you, they are really cool too.
- Carmen
I think it depends on your wardrobe--do you wear more brown or black? But def either the black/red or brown/green the latter being my favorite. :)
- Kelly W.
I wear more browns on a day to day than anything else. And oftentimes I will wear more colors that match with browns.
- Jon, the Chilled Beartato
I thought they went bankrupt and aren't making them anymore? So you don't have to do that unless you want to punish them for the last several years.
- Jimminy
be carefull to keep them alive... this should be long and very painful

@James yeah, but the inventor can also take the heat for all the endless copy cats and knock offs roaming about...

Yahoo’s New Marketing Chief Elisa Steele Doesn’t Use Flickr and How This Signals That Yahoo Management Is Out of Step With Innovation - http://thomashawk.com/2009...
Even worse than simply Bartz or Steele not using Flickr, a quick Flickr people search of the 12 current executives listed by Bloomberg for the company (Roy Bostock, Carol Bartz, David Filo, Jerry Yang, Blake J Jorgensen, Aristotle N Balogh, Elisa Steele, David Windley, Michael J Callahan, Venkat Panchapakesan, Hilary A Schneider, and Michael A Murray) shows that not a single one of these individuals carries any sort of significant presence on the site whatsoever. Now maybe Flickr is not the most profitable business unit at Yahoo. And maybe the $35 million or so that they bought it for is mere chump change for executives at a company like Yahoo. But Flickr nonetheless represents one of the most significant properties ever on the internet. Flickr breaks news. Flickr has some of the world’s most amazing art. Flickr represents the largest organized library of images in the world! That is something. And the fact that Yahoo executives, even in some small way, don’t really want to have anything to do with that is
- Thomas Hawk
I'm a big proponent of eating your own dog food. It gives you a much better perspective about what's right with it and what needs improvement. Imagine if Salesforce sales folks used Excel spreadsheets to track prospects.
- Hutch Carpenter
The thing with photos is that they are universal. Everyone has them. There is no reason why Yahoo execs ought not maintain accounts at Flickr. I think it would be good for them to not only maintain accounts there but to really delve deep into the site in order to figure out its innovation and how that might be applied to other Yahoo products and services. I think that was part of the original promise and idea when they bought Flickr in the first place.
- Thomas Hawk
Well, I'm not a flickr user, but I don't think I'm out of touch with innovation. I simply have no interesting pictures to share. My life in The Netherlands is very, very boring to others. I do my work is online. I think what matters is if she uses new tools in general. Does she blog? Does she use Delicious? Is she on FriendFeed?
- Meryn Stol
Meryn I think the answers to all of those are no, but I could be wrong.
- Thomas Hawk
I cannot agree with Niche Player more. I was ever so interested in Google picking up Flickr instead of Picasa. But I wonder if Flickr would then have been less social if it had? To me, Picasa seems cold and sterile. Enjoyed reading this greatly, Thomas.
- Todd Tripp
I've got an account on Picasa. I've never been able to get into it. It is cold and sterile because it lacks the social power that is Flickr. It's not a bad place to host and store images but it misses the power of social integration significantly.
- Thomas Hawk
I like PicasaWeb for sharing a group of pictures with lots of people from events...like my son's Scout Den, etc that I don't want to lump in with my Flickr stuff
- Kreg Steppe
I switched to Picasa from Flickr just because I use Picasas to manage my photos on my desktop. However, after just a few months, I felt lonely on Picasa and am now in the process of switching back to Flickr.
- Kyle Judkins
Out of step, out of step, just because everyone drinks from the same trough doesn't mean innovation has to go the same way. There are still millions of yahoo users. It's got a loyal fanbase and as a company it still has a lot of influence. Everyone, almost, uses flickr rather than picasa for example.
- Richard A.
Richard, "everyone" except for the 12 executives running Yahoo of course.
- Thomas Hawk
Richard, how can you analyse and assess how useful your products and services are if you're not using them yourself?
- Nicholas James
If I had a few million at hand, I would go and buy flickr from Yahoo, just to get it out of the hands of ppl who have no idea or interest in the true potential of images and what it can do for a generation
- Shivanand Velmurugan
Maybe Flickr (a western Canadian invention) should act more like a French Canadian and secede... or try to, anyway...
- Paula W
Why are you complaining when so many hundreds of thousands of people like the product?
- Richard A.
